Where to Find Birria in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Formerly Carlos Beltran Birria, this popular truck in a gas station parking lot is out on 82nd, past Cartlandia, over the Portland border in Happy Valley. It has the full line-up of birria tacos, quesabirria, mulitas (two corn tortillas grilled with meat and cheese inside), plus curiosities like keto tacos using fried cheese in lieu of tortillas and ramen birria with consomé as a soup base. Birrieria Carlos is open for takeout."

Google
good food!! good prices!! great service!! i got the quesabirrias with consome, they were amazing but a little too much cheese for my taste

Jeff M.

Google
Great fast service! Birrieria burrito wasn’t the best! But I’m gonna def go back and try more items on the menu

Talia R.

Google
Delicious. So satisfying. The meat is quality, the service was fast and friendly, the cart it self at least on the outside is well kept. Each quesabirria is $3.50. 3-4 is a good amount to order. The meat is not seasoned enough to eat without dipping into the consome (a hot broth with onion) which is how it is intended to be eat. Will definitely be back.

I am a bit of a glutton. I like to feel full. And so when I wanted to get some Mexican food I decided to stop here for the first time for lunch. A little bit difficult to find Tucktaway behind a cascade cigar and tobacco Company, the festive trailer has some nice employees working there.I just finished my burrito and I am satisfied. I really like cheese and they didn’t skimp on the cheese on my burrito. It was meaty it was tasty it was fresh and I will certainly come back there again.

Google
An amazing birrieria and as of now my favorito. Service was great and food was delicioso. The birria and the dishes it’s prepared in are not greasy or oily like other locations I’ve tried. This birria is in my opinion perfectly prepared. Rich flavor without excessive oil or grease in the broth (consomé) or the tortillas (which are usually dipped in the consomé before being fried. The keto (cheese shell) taco was perfectly fried cheesy goodness with of course juicy birria meat inside... possibly my favorite dish here but hard to decide as all the dishes I tried were perfecto. The Quesadilla de harina was grande, nicely toasted, filled with birria meat and a melted queso blanco. The cucumber agua fresca was super refreshing and a wonderful drink to wash down the rich and flavorful birria dishes. 5🌟 and will definitely be back. FYI turns out some of the menu items come with a small consomé. I didn’t think to ask so I ordered a small consomé as a side and ended up with 3, but hey no complaints here, too much consomé sounds like a challenge I’m willing to consume 😉.

Stop reading this, go to Birrieria Carlos, order and then while waiting you can read this review. I ordered 5 Quesabirillia tacos and a large horchata. It was made fast, was piping hot, and packaged well. Took a 20 minute drive home and then waited a good 15 minutes before actually sitting down to eat because I'm really that dumb. And then, I open the package to find I'm missing the consume. No big deal, while it is unfortunately the most flavorful part, mistakes happen, I'm not going to let it ruin my meal. And despite MISSING *THE MOST* FLAVORFUL PART of the tacos, these Quesabirillia tacos are in the top 2 I've ever had. I bought 5 to have 2-3 tonight and the rest as left overs but the raw dogged tacos were so good I ate all 5. Oh, and the horchata is fantastic. Also, if you want to dine in they have a small covered seating area you can use.

Google
I have a hard time pronouncing words and talking to people. I’ve never felt more at home than I have here getting my food! The service alone was super fast and the food was amazing! Definitely my new spot!❤️

osiel isai R.

Google
It's okay. They are not cheap with their food. Plenty of meat. Nice people. The only criticism I got is that their consome was a little plain. The meat lack of salt. The flavors were there but! just a little bit more salt. It would have been perfect.

Audrey L.

Yelp
Tried out their new cart in Sellwood. Quick and delicious! Easily the best option in the neighborhood.

Justin S.

Yelp
Perfect and amazing, have it almost every day the service is also wonderful, nice and really good people. They prepare our food really fast even when they are super busy they still make your food with speed and care.

Yelp
I love the variety that birrieria Carlos brings to the clackamas area! They have everything from ramen to quesadillas to tacos and much much more. They do not skimp on the meat portions which is awesome! The price point is higher than similar carts, but the increased meat portions make up for that. The seasonings are not my favorite and a bit stronger than I'm Used to at other locations with similar fare. I will be back to give some of their other items a try!
google avatar

Marissa D.

Yelp
I had two of each. Quesabirria and Quesabirria crunch. They were amazing! The service was great and the food came out fast. I would definitely go back thats for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was insanely good I haven't had good food truck tacos in a long time these are it plus the Agua Frescas very refreshing They're really fast with the orders and very clean ! I know this is going to be my new taco spot Best Birria tacos to be honest in Portland area
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
This place is authentic and delicious as you can get in the greater Portland area. Parking, and a small outdoor seating available. Great for late night Eats. Seriously. You must try.
google avatar

Frankie F.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I really like this truck! Their Birria is full of flavor! Birria ramen is a must try! So warm and incredibly tasty! Quesabirria tacos are also an absolute must anytime i drive down 82nd! Recently I got a pineapple aquas Fresca with Chamoy and it was so refreshing!
google avatar

Aidan M.

Yelp
The food here is always hot and freshly made, customer service is also excellent. Will continue to come back and eat more!
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
My buddy and I had been planning a late night taco run for weeks and when our first choice closed at 10pm we decided to give Birrieria Carlos a try and we sure were glad we did! We talked about how this will become our new favorite Birrieria taco place in the greater Portland area. I opted for three Birrieria tacos with cheese and a pina drink while my buddy ordered two original tacos and their burrito. We both got sides of their consume. The food was full of flavor and the hot sauce they provided a great kick (we asked for their spicy hot sauce). Their drinks were on point and complimented everything well. They had a small covered eating area with a couple bench tables which was great so we didn't have to eat it all in the car. We have already talked about heading back out there in a couple weeks and I know I'm definitely looking forward to it. I hope if you're in the area you stop by and given them a try!
google avatar

Luna H.

Yelp
Really good! Not too much fat on the meat, really good flavor! Only complaint is they forgot my salsas even though I asked while she handed me the food & the rice/beans were too oily! Will definitely be back when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Delicious as always. I am down for a good taco any time and they always have great tacos! Mouth watering just thinking about them. Will be returning:)

Yelp
Wanted to love this place but unfortunately it was a let down for me. Birrieria Carlos is a food truck tucked away in a parking lot on 82nd. The food is pricey especially considering I didn't enjoy what I got. I ordered: -Quesabirria with consome ($17.99) - came with 3 quesabirrias and consome. The quesabirrias were very soggy and oily and the consome was a tad salty to me. -Pineapple Agua Fresca ($6) - I felt like I was drinking pure sugar for this drink. Left the two stars because maybe the quesabirrias became soggy on the quick drive home and maybe I'm just not a quesabirria fan to begin with. Regardless I probably won't be back.
google avatar

Cynthia X.

Yelp
I wish I would have known about this food truck sooner! It is definitely a hidden gem. Everything is delicious, seriously! Their keto taco is my absolute favorite because the cheese taco shell makes it hit different. It is kinda messy bc they do not skimp on the meat and toppings. Worth getting your hands dirty! They also have a covered seating area if you can't wait to get home before digging in. You can also call to order ahead to save time

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and have finally had the opportunity. We opted for delivery and it's not too far so food arrived timely. Super happy with the quesabirria. Great flavor, great texture, would totally want those every time. We did try the Keto tacos, which are great if you're Keto, but you do need to eat with a fork. Tasty, but messy, and we wouldn't probably bother with those again. We also had just regular tacos and with the meat so tender and tasty they were quite good, even if not the cheapest tacos around (nor the most expensive). Had no idea what a vampiro was so tried those - like a sopa. Another hit was the Cheeto chimichanga. It was really big (enough to split) and nicely crisp. Easy to eat with your hands. Perfect amount of Flamin' Hot Cheetos to give it that flavor and kick, without being overpowering, which also gives it a good texture without being so crunchy you just feel like you're eating chips. It's about the meat, which we thought was nicely prepared, but as far as format we'd probably split a Cheeto chimi and get quesabirrias every time.

Ryan H.

Yelp
Terrible service and soggy ass tacos! Never going back and am going to make it a point to tell everyone I know how shitty it was. I ate 1 taco and through the rest in the trash because that's where it belongs!
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
We always wanted to try Carlos birrieria so we ended up at their food cart today. Unfortunately the reviews did not match up with the dishes we ordered. Ended up with the "pizza birrieria" and boy was it salty. Usually when we go to these spots they're full of delicious flavor but was not too happy about it. On the upset though.... pineapple juice was el flamin. But the chamoy sauce would have been better on the inside of the cup. When we do decide to go back and try their food cart again I think I'll ask for less meat because we got the double. Also if they added cilantro and white onion in the birria soup it would have been much better. It was bland compared to other spots we have tried in PDX.
google avatar

Anastacia S.

Yelp
Birria is always good, but the people taking the order are either in a bad mood or kind of rude.
google avatar

O B.

Yelp
The tacos are amazing but my favorite is definitely the birrieria broth or the ramen. Sooo flavorful! The drink here are very fun and delicious as well. Come here at least monthly and have even catered.

Alexa J.

Yelp
Best birria place I come here at least twice a month! Super yummy tacos and consomé! Workers are always super friendly
google avatar

TheBravoReality _.

Yelp
If you're really hungry I would definitely recommend it... The Mulitas & Tacos Are pretty decent. The Birria was all right but not the best. Overall quick service.

Natalie M.

Yelp
Really good birria tacos and green salsa sometimes the girl working there gives some attitude though.
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
Quesabirria with consume and cucumber lime agua fresca with chamoy is where it is at. Not so sure about the chamoy? Get it on the side and try it that way. This place gets really busy so if you order ahead, it can save some time. Great hidden gem They have some outdoor seating, not a lot. We usually just take it to go!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
This was my first Birria experience and I really wanted to like this place because it came highly recommended but it really missed the mark for me. It's located off of 82nd in a parking lot behind what I believe is a furniture store. There is ample parking and a couple of picnic tables to eat at. We ordered 2 birrieria quesadillas not realizing that you only get the consume for free if you order 3. We asked if we ordered a 3rd one if we could get the sauce and we were told that since it wouldn't be 3 in the same transaction I that we would have to purchase the sauce for $2. Ok, fine. We get our food and the tacos were so small and did not have a lot of meat. At $4 a piece I expected more. They had hardly any flavor and the consume was pretty gross. They came with a side of onions and cilantro but because the taco was cooked closed by the cheese I'm not sure what we were supposed to do with them. The person who checked us out was nice and that's the only reason they're getting 2 stars.

Yelp
So glad I finally found a place in the Portland area with bomb birria tacos! Everywhere else in Portland with birria only offers quesabirria, which I am not a fan of. This place is no frills, no gimmicks, just pure deliciousness at reasonable prices. The consomme was to die for and everything reminded me of my favorite taco shop back in California. The family that owns this truck is super nice, and it is evident that they really care about sharing good food! Will definitely be returning soon.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
Awesome service and amazing food! Agua frescas are soooooo good as well. Always stop by when I can
google avatar

Mandy H.

Yelp
The serving size was outstanding. And the quesabirria was delicious. I wasn't fond of the rice and beans and the sour cream was liquid Overall I will definitely go again.
google avatar

Julissa S.

Yelp
Hella GOOD !. I was doing errands with my bf and was craving this and there's another location that I'm used to going after work , but since I was craving it I was like ik there's a Carlos near this area we at and it was literally down the street the service was great , the food AMAZING !. Flavorful I tore that shit uuuppp !. But idk why I didn't try their aguas that day ;c they look goood , NEXT TIME !. TRY this PLACE you know you want to
google avatar

Kat N.

Yelp
First off, the quesabirria tacos are awesome and that consommé is fire. We had a long drive home, so they probably weren't as crispy as they should've been, but it was still warm and delicious. I really regret not getting the ramen, because I was drinking that broth like it was a stand alone soup. Will easily drive all the way from inner NE again for those tacos. Second, sadly, the rest won't be worth the drive and that's the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. The asada tacos and regular birria tacos were surprisingly bland. It helped to dip everything into the super broth. The pineapple Aqua was SUPER sweet. Really syrupy. Hard to drink right off the bat, but once the ice melted a bit, it was better. I'd try the horchata next time. Lastly, both sauces were good. Green sauce was tasty and the red sauce was actually spicy. Ladies working the cart were friendly as well. Also, nice that you get little buzzers that will let you know when your order is ready. That way you can go wait in your car instead of standing around in the Rocco's lot.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
Amazing tacos!! The meat is phenomenal slow cooked and flavorful. We've tried everything including the ramen. They usually have a line. The sauce is what makes the place.Great fusion taco truck and an even better addition to the neighborhood. The keto taco made from cheese was something new for me and the crunchy cheese was the perfect substitute for a tortilla, but the quesabirrias was definitely my favorite it was a twist on au ju and roast beef, but oh so much better.
google avatar

Leticia C.

Yelp
I LOVE the quesabirria tacos from here! It's all I ever get. I appreciate that they let you call ahead to place an order. However the wait times are not long anyways when we show up at order there. Thank you for opening a spot in vancouver!
google avatar

Thuan H.

Yelp
The tacos were great! Also their birrira ramen was really good and tasty too. We came around 2PM ish and it was a little busy but they got everything done in a timely manner. I wish their outdoor seating was heated even though it was covered it was still really cold outside. Also the picnic tables weren't really clean and we had to clean it ourselves.
google avatar

Cynthia A.

Yelp
Everything I've tried here is good ! I was surprised by their fresh watermelon juice, I don't think I've seen to many other places have that. Good job to the cooks and staff, they are always busy but they never have to long of a wait . Recommend definitely. Best birriria in town.

Vincent L.

Yelp
Would come back. Birria Burrito - Good flavor, super stuffed with meat. So much meat I'd rather have tacos for a better ratio of tortilla and Birria. Birria Tacos(no cheese, no consume dip) - Great! I enjoyed it.
google avatar

K H.

Yelp
Amazing Quesabirrias! Great food and good service. If you like good food this is a the place. Sunday afternoon is very busy, so make sure to plan to wait, or if you are smarter than us you can call in ahead and put your order or use Doordash. To get the consume (caldo ) for your Quesabirria, you need to order at least 3 to get it included. Also, try the drinks, we like the lime cucumber, but they also have other beverages. There is only 3 picnic tables so seating here to eat is harder. The sign for the place is small so be sure not to miss it. Buen provecho!!!i
google avatar

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
Top notch quality and service!!! We ordered 4 trays of birria tacos and quesabirrias for my brothers bday for $185. They charged $15 for delivery which is very reasonable. Came right on time with the food perfectly packaged and organized. My Mom was very happy andall the guests commented on how delicious the food was. Will definitely use them in the future! Thank you so much!

Guadalupe M.

Yelp
This is the fourth time we order from here , is convenience. Cuz is near from my house and they close late , the first time we order was really good , the second was bad the third time was ok , but today was the worse. The food is really inconsistent . I think they change cooks , every time , They ask me what kind of sauce do I want it , I said red, and not even one came in the bag . The tacos dorados was burn and no consomé came with it . Like usually. Sorry for the 3 starts but, I think that will Help. To focus on the consistency of the food.
google avatar

Sandra J.

Yelp
Would totally recommend trying this place. Quesobirria with consume and keto birria tacos. They were all delicious. The spicy sauce is spicy. We left our hotel and came back to the delicious smell still wafting from the containers.
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
This place is rocking it out. Nice to have a place to get real authentic mexican street food here in Clackamas Co. They even added the birrieria pizza option which is amazing by the way.

Vivian F.

Yelp
Usually get tacos and nachos from here but it seems like they've been cheating/cheaping out on ingredients in the nachos especially.

M K.

Yelp
I really don't like leaving a 'not good' review, but the truth must be told. I was excited to try this place today and I really had high hopes. I wanted to try their carnitas, but they didn't have any. I was there probably around 2:30 PM. So, I opted for two tacos, an asada/steak and a shredded beef. Tacos were $2.50, so my bill was only $5 plus tip. I didn't expect two tacos to fill me up, but it was just a snack and an excuse to try this taco truck. First impression, where's the onion's and cilantro? There were only a scant few on each taco! Second thought, why does the steak look like little pellets? Pretty odd. Sadly, and the real reason I jumped on to write this review so quickly, is that in my very first bite of the steak taco... a hair. Blegh. Also, gristle in the meat that couldn't be chewed. The shredded beef was a bit greasy, but had good and even a bit of a unique flavor to it. But there wasn't much meat there. In the end, I was disappointed, and a bit grossed out by the hair, which is just unacceptable. Steak taco was bland, chewy, small and generally unimpressive. Shredded beef had more potential. They just need to make it less greasy, and not shy away from adding onions and cilantro. Also, portions should be a little bigger. As for their asada, they need to start over from scratch with that, sadly. And tiny pellet sized pieces aren't going to cut it.
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Loved it! I got the quesabirrias and they put the onion and cilantro mix on the side so you have to add it inside yourself, which isn't super easy because it's so deliciously cheesy it sticks to itself. But flavor was great, came with sauce to dip in which is to die for!! Can't wait to go back!

Emma G.

Yelp
Food is delicious. We have tried the quesabirria, the pizza, nachos and the mulitas. I have to say, the mulitas are my favorite! Spicy sauce is nice and spicy and the avocado sauce is flavorful. Pair with an horchata and you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Adriana Z.

Yelp
You've probably seen many dipping taco videos online in da juice! Yes!! This is one of the spots! This Yellow food truck hits the spot with a variety of birrieria options, even Keto style!! My favorite are the Quesabirrieria, meaty, crunchy, dipped in birrieria juice! I am picky when it comes to Mexican food, I approve of this spot!!

Debbie S.

Yelp
I was first introduced to Carlos during the first shut down of the pandemic. We ordered through Facebook and then picked up from his home. The food was absolutely delicious! He has now got his food truck out in the Clackamas area. Since it is so far out of our way, now that we moved to Battle Ground I was bummed. I reached out and found out that if you order at least one day in advance, he will deliver! My daughter decided that she wanted Carlos tacos for her birthday dinner. I ordered 10 tacos, 10 quesabirrias and a Ramenbirria. Carlos himself, delivered not only excellent service but hands down the best food ever! The meat is so flavorful and the consomme is the best I have ever tasted Thank you Carlos!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Best birrieria place in Portland! Cheap prices with the best quality. I ordered the quesabirrierias (came with consome) and some fruity drinks. This place definitely hits different compared to the other birrieria carts.

Mariah V.

Yelp
If you've had real birria you would be sad about this. Save your money. Super soggy. The beans and rice are just not good . Tastes bland the beans are kind of soupy for some reason. And whole. Not refried. And really freaking expensive, also the consume tastes like it was made days ago. I make better at home.
google avatar

Julie F.

Yelp
Really greasy, and I didn't find the flavors to be very complex. Just one note of salt. And heavy, heavy grease. We ordered a bunch of different items off the menu. None of us had more than one or two bites, set it back down, and didn't touch it again.
google avatar

Gwen C.

Yelp
Over the past few months, we've had the mulitas, quesabirria, birria burrito, birria tacos, birria ramen, and the keto birria tacos, and the pineapple agua fresca and the canteloupe agua fresca. Multiple times. Always delicious and always hot and fresh. The birria ramen was a pleasant surprise as the noodles taste fresh! The consomme is delicious, and we love the avocado sauce and the hot sauce. Their new truck is larger, and they've moved to the back of the parking lot and put in a few picnic tables. Great for lunch or dinner. Nice that they're open late now too!
google avatar

Madeleine P.

Yelp
I tried this place when it first came out and it had a different location. I've since had the queda irías a couple times. The food is so delicious but a bit pricey. The cashier is super friendly and understanding. I was super disappointed tho when they switched that you now have to buy the consomé . Will say the queda it's are small for the price of 3.99 but oh well. Would recommended if hungry but not if you're in a rush
google avatar

Zach J.

Yelp
I've been here a handful of times now. It's been great. Super tasty tacos. I really love the staff. They're always great, help me practice my Spanish! Overall a great experience. And definitely some of the best birria tacos I've ever had!
