The 8 Best Birria Spots In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Boyle Heights landmark Birrieria Chalio has been chopping up birria de chivo in various ways since the 1980s: deboned and shredded, hunks of flap meat, or (our favorite) ribs so tender that gravity slides the meat off the bone. Whichever cut you pick, Chalio’s robust seasoning is what makes this birria a must-try. Everything is stained red and boosted with earthy-sweet dried chiles, and the generous amount of salt rubbed into the meat enhances its flavor. You can order your birria crisped up with broth on the side, or bathed in Chalio’s fat-specked consommé. Both are spectacular when eaten with hubcap-sized corn tortillas." - sylvio martins

Good place to eat, but pretty pricey! It was hard to find something under $25. I was surprised to see street vendors selling inside.

Erick Huerta (El Random Hero)

Google
Long time neighborhood gem that has some of the best birria in LA. Don't believe me? Watch the episode of "No Reservations" where the goat Anthony Bourdain tries it himself.

Google
We had an amazing experience thanks to our server, BENJAMIN! From the moment we sat down, they made us feel welcomed and taken care of. He was incredibly attentive and had great menu recommendations, and made sure everything came out perfectly. It's rare to find someone who truly enhances the dining experience, but BENJAMIN absolutely did. Thank you for making our meal special — we’ll definitely be back soon!!

Google
This place has been around for a long time and is popular for there style of Mexican food .We tried there cabeza tacos with hand made freshly made corn tortillas there's also birria sold along with traditional dishes i highly recommend this spot if you enjoy eating this type of food You will not be disappointed 😋 😊

Google
Today was our first time going to this restaurant and I have to say it was a pleasure. The food is delicious, and the service is awesome. Benjamin provided us with excellent service and made us very comfortable. We all enjoyed the food and the service provided. We will definitely go back.

Google
Was here 8/16/2024 Food is delicious depending what you get. Some food is Over priced. Came here as a kid, now in my 30s I was able to share the delicious dish with my kids the Birria with homemade delicious tortillas. Gratuity is auto charged to the BILL😒

Google
You won't know the price until you pay...I wasn't mad. The orange juice was freshly squeezed, tacos are big. The menudo and pozole was filling. Overall good food, service and plenty of entertainment around. I do recommend.

Google
They got our entire order wrong but we ate it anyways and the food was crazy good! Thanks again but hopefully next time we get what we ordered lol

Yelp
My husband has been coming here since he was a kid. He's vegan now but he has always wanted to come bring me to this plate and although I wanted to try the chilaquiles plate, he made me order the birria combo lol. I got the revuelta mix and omg it was so delicious. Haven't had birria like that in a long time. The service was friendly and nice. Looking forward to going back sometime. Thank you

Yelp
I just want to say, my best friend and I use to go to this place in mid '90s until she passed away, it was a treat away from are kids, while they were in school we would spend 1-2 hours here, not bcz it was all you could eat . I remember the plate was about $9.99 all you could eat with 3 home made tortillas Which it was good deal, untill today, I wanted to remember have breakfast/ lunch like u would with my best friend., it will my last $25.00 a plate with two tortillas. Don't get me wrong, it's delicious. I'm going to put this restaurant to rest. I will not be going back again, it's so expensive!

Yelp
Great food and service. Birria is top notch definitely a new favorite and a staple to the Los Angeles community

Yelp
Menudo was tasty but lots of Grano. Could've used more carne. The big plate of Birria de Chivo was delicious, but for $25 it came with no beans and rice and no more than a pound or so of Birria. They charge $3 each for a small bowl beans and small bowl of rice. The corn tortillas were absolutely delicious though. Homemade through and through. I recommend the birria plate that actually comes with rice n beans to save cash.

Yelp
Lunch Date July 21, 2023 Family Owned Business!!!! and when I say family owned I mean family own... I had the pleasure of meeting the owners children. When I have lunch dates with an old boss/friend now she tends to take me to thee best places not only to eat , I enjoyed her company and Jose was a bonus Owner of restaurant. He even took the time to show me around back outdoors where they have live entertainment on weekends. For me that is a huge bonus a new spit to bring my mother in law. I started out with Guacamole yummy so much for sharing. I devoured it while José spoke ! The chips were on point crunchy, salty quickly dived into the Chile . Once my main course arrived we dug in. My enchilada and chili relleno hit the spot. I nibbled on another plate the Carne Asada with eggs beans and rice. I miss those flavors ! The beans and rice is just like how grandma use to make them...

Yelp
Great local East LA Mexican resturant. Inexpensive, home made, authentic food with ongoing musicians playing

Mark C.

Yelp
This is place is so good on Sunday , the menudo is so good I couldn't stop eating it. What can I say about their home made tortillas they're and size of a pancake. Is you're hung over this is the place to come they have bomb ass michelas and live norteños you might come out full and drunk at the same time lol

Yelp
This restaurant was a regular during my childhood. Finally came back to it as an adult, and it's the best thing I ever did. There's plenty of parking in the back of the restaurant and metered parking on the street. We were greeted and seated right away. Ambiance was good and service was fast. We ordered their famous Birria, Menudo, and a quesadilla with a side of rice and beans. The Birria was served nicely, and delicious. Tender meat, and not watered down consomé! The menudo was clean, good flavor and did not disappoint. Let's talk about their tortillas a Mano! big, thin, and so good, I paired them with the beans and it felt just like eating at moms! Overall, this place is great; fast, delicious, and welcoming. I recommend this place and will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jose Y.

Yelp
Small restaurant with good food. I came with my mom. She had the pozole de pollo and I had the combo platter. My mom asked for extra granos which was no an extra charge. The tortillas were extra large and yummy. The chips were home made and the Chile was spicy but good. She got an horchata with extra ice. I had the combo platter which was un taco dorado con pollo y verduras, una enchilada de queso, un chile relleno, and side of rice and beans. The Chile relleno was my fav but it never has. Parking lot is in the back and there is also entrance through the back.

Yelp
I came here for the first time and I will definitely be coming back. The outside is humble and worn but I came for the food not the ambiance. I ordered the birria plate. It came with cilantro, onions, habanero salsa and the best corn tortillas I've ever had in my 47 years. The salsa was very hot but yet it had an amazing habanero flavor. Overall the meal was not merely good it was something special. The salsa the tortillas and birria were perfect. The service was friendly and efficient and I enjoyed everything tremendously.

Sarah S.

Yelp
Great costumer service and very kind food was very delicious worth the price! very rare to find both things in one restaurant now days

Yelp
Wow!wow!wow! The Birria is so authentic and the staff is very friendly. The birria takes me back to my grand mothers house in Michigan Mexico. If you come for Birria, please bring all your family and Nieghbors. This place rocks! .... Viva México Cabrones!!!!!! This place was soooo good that I brought my wife and girlfriend

Josue P.

Yelp
Great food ! Delicious hand made tortillas! Birria is amazing! I will be returning soon.

Yelp
Haven't been here in ages!!! When in on a Friday morning and it was empty. I was able to find parking in front of the restaurant on the street,($1 for an hr) they do have parking in the back as well I sat down and was greeted right away. Ordered and food came out promptly. I ordered a taco de barbacoa my mother ordered taco de cabeza. And my little one ordered taco dorado plate for kids. And two cafe se olla. Food hasn't changed in my opinion, it was delicious and my taco came with a small side of conzumel. Gave it a four because soda was $5... what in the world?? Seemed like things need a little cleaning, specially the menus.

Jasmine B.

Yelp
Service at this restaurant was amazing. We had Martha as our server and she checked in on us multiple times throughout our meal. They serve their food in large portions and they have seating inside and outside. I'd recommend this place to others and I'm definitely coming back!

Gabrielle D.

Yelp
Deliciousness yummy yummy. The best birria in town. I love it. Everyday for me

Angel R.

Yelp
We stopped by Chalio's last Sunday after church, it was my first time there and as soon as I walked in I smelled the birria de chivo come to find out that's what they specialize in! All the food was delicious and good portions! Our table ordered menudo, birria de chivo with rice & beans, and chilaquiles, we all shared our food and even had to get a to-go container! Everthing was delicious! We also tried the cafe de olla and horchata, it was bomb!! I also love that they give you an order of fresh handmade tortillas with your food, they taste so good! The service was great also, our server was Benjamin and honestly he made us feel like family! He was welcoming, hospitable, and very attentive! He answered all our questions we had about the food, and he gave me a lesson on birria vs Barbacoa lol! Benjamin really went out of his way to make sure we had a great lunch! Thanks Benjamin and thank you birrieria chalio! Can't wait to go back!

Nohemi G.

Yelp
This place used to be good, but sucks now. The portions got smaller and the quality of the food went down. $75.00 for a small bowl of pozole and a plate of chile relleno and two drinks what a joke.

Tom N.

Yelp
The food was great. The portions are nice and Service was good and as far as the ambience it made, you feel like you went back in time 30 years but very clean and cool feeling around the restaurant. !

Yelp
During my visit to Birrieria Chalio, I noticed the decor was quite outdated, but it still had an authentic feel and a welcoming family vibe. Many guests seemed to be regulars. When I arrived, I seated myself (it's self seating) and a server with tattoos came over, offering me a menu and a drink. However, she appeared a bit impatient when I asked for a few minutes to decide.(she even rolled her eyes) Shocked that I was sent, another younger server. She took over and provided much more polite and helpful service. Despite the lackluster initial service, I must admit that the food, especially the fresh large tortillas and the combination birrieria, was delicious. However, I don't think I'll be returning mainly due to the subpar initial service from the server with the tattoos and attitude. As I continued with my meal, I noticed that the server with tattoos was offering coffee refills to tables around me but seemingly ignored my needs. This made the situation uncomfortable and awkward. I wonder if my pride key chain had anything to do with the poor service. Overall, because of this uncomfortable experience, I cannot recommend this location to anyone, despite the good food they offer.

Jazmin E.

Yelp
It needs to be said first, that their staff is on their A game. Fabiola was an excellent server and kindness goes a long way and needs to be rewarded more. She knew her menu, asked necessary questions to have our breakfast made to our tastes. Her service was impeccable. The food was AMAZING. The pork and green Chile combination breakfast plate was delicious. The sauce was the right amount of spicy. Handmade tortillas. We ordered the menudo without hominy. The flavor was excellent. Condiments were fresh and chopped to perfection. The caldo de pollo was flavorful and full of vegetables. Horchata was just ok but still yummy. We will definitely be returning. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Small private parking area and minimal street parking.

Sam S.

Yelp
I spent 120 here. To be honest it was not the great like it was alright. That is me being realistic. I came here thinking it would be out of this world and it tasted like something you could find anywhere. It tastes like something your own mother could make. The agua de pepini needed more lemon. Very expensive.
google avatar

Yelp
Always great authentic Mexican Birria! Love coming to this place. Don't let the old decor and furniture deter you. The food excellent!

Ramon G.

Yelp
Food was terrible! No seasoning! I highly recommend that they should Close up the Restaurant! Manager was very disrespectful. Didn't care about customer concerns and dissatisfaction! Place needs a real face-lift. Took me back to the 70's!

Yelp
Came in with a party of three at around 10am, we found street parking about a block down but they also have a parking lot located behind the place. Service was good, we were told it was open seating and were able to order quick, only took about 5-7 minutes to get our food out. We ordered coffee and water for our drinks, the cafe de olla was decent but not strong. While we waiting we were able to jam out to some music we put on the AMI jukebox so that is always a plus! Once we got our food we were excited to eat as it looked delicious! The chilaquiles come in red and green, I got red and my sister ordered green. The red ones were good but not spicy how I like my chilaquiles but thankfully my sister let me have half of hers so I got the best of both worlds! The chilaquiles are nice and fried as well! The portion is huge for $10.99 and comes with rice and beans as well as a big portion of eggs. The beans were good but the rice was hard. We would definitely come back for the chilaquiles!
google avatar

Alondra L.

Yelp
My cousin came here to have lunch and when he was eating this got stuck. He was almost choking and the employees from there weren't even trying to help him. Till he was able to spit it out and this came out! Then the daughters owner came and kept telling him that that has never happened and had an attitude! My cousin was bleeding a lot and she didn't even offer to call the paramedics or ask if he was feeling better. Next time who ever your name is the owners daughter know how to deal with a situation like this you were very rude to my cousin and he almost choke. Plus he had to still pay after what happened! OSHA should go inspect your restaurant!
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
What do I know? I'm just a dumb güero who stumbled in to get a posole to go, because it was cold out, and I was picking up some lunch for myself and my wife. Getting a side of corn tortillas was a genius suggestion by my wife. The place was pretty full at 11:30am. The service was quick and friendly. It was a long ride home with the aromas filling up the car. The posole was great. The gigantic chewy house made tortillas were heavenly. One order of posole and tortillas filled us both up. I would have been regretful if I done it alone. We live 30 minutes away and are now trying to cook up an excuse to go back and enjoy a proper meal there as soon as possible.
google avatar

Kristine D.

Yelp
This place was delicious! I will definitely be coming back. The outdoor seating area was spacious and clean, and our waitress was really sweet. The food was sooo good. The birria plate I ordered came with a side of beans and rice (both delicious) and a little bowl of consommé. The tortillas are handmade and HUGE! I couldn't even finish one whole tortilla. Agua de pepino was also refreshing and they made scrambled eggs which were not on the menu for that day for my baby cousin, which was really nice of them. She's 1.5 years old. It was very nice of them to accommodate her baby needs. There is also plenty of parking behind the restaurant. Loved it. Tasted homemade.

Yelp
Omg this place is to die for. I tried this place after many relatives had told me to go here. When I tried the birria it gave me a flashback to the birria I had growing up at home. The birria is so tasty and the caldo of it is just to the next level. The service is extremely exceptional and huge shout out to Alma for going above and beyond. The tortillas are super huge and generous. I can't wait to go back again. Only a mile down from el mercadito. Be sure to get here early as it does get super busy.

Elvia R.

Yelp
Never dissapoints those homemade tortillas and the birria always brings you back. The service is great all the ladies there are warm and welcoming.

Arturo F.

Yelp
Great place! We had menudo (excellent), and pozole (almost as good)! The house-made corn tortillas are very large and very tasty. A great meal all around!
google avatar

Lucy R.

Yelp
I've been going to this little corner of the world for over 30 years. It never fails to satisfy that need for delicious birria. The tortillas are still handmade and hit the spot. A definite must when visiting my old stomping ground. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp

Cecilia A.

Yelp
Always come here great service except fro today. Asked for 5 ordenes brought in our olla it wasn't even filled to the top like they said they would but whatever it was fine. Until we started eating I found a tooth pick right in the middle of my my meat. Had it be seen someone else they could've broken a tooth, choked or got really hurt. The service and employees they have now just isn't the same as before
google avatar

Danielle D.

Yelp
Great service - pretty empty for a Wednesday night and our server was extremely attentive. Their salsa has a nice kick to it and has a stronger tomato flavor, which I loved. Thick chips too. Steven ordered the birria burrito (and struggled bigtime with the pronunciation but our server was kind enough to teach him how to say it properly). Huge portion size and came with the bowl of consomé. My mole negro plate was fantastic. Deep flavor, fall-off-the-bone chicken, and fresh tortillas!
google avatar

MissFely D.

Yelp
The lady who took our order was very nice! Aside of that the food is not great... Drove from OC to come home dissatisfied. 1. The goat meat was chewy 2. Paid for extra broth and only got 1 12 oz. cup with a huge piece of meat. 3. Tortilla soup is basically the caldo de pollo without chicken. They call it tortilla soup because you add tortilla chips? Okay They shouldn't call it tortilla soup
google avatar

Marisol C.

Yelp
1st time visiting and we were in the mood for Menudo. Must say the atmosphere was nice. Dined outside our waitress was nice and polite. Enjoyed the Menudo and a Taco de Barbacoa & my kid got Chile Verde Taco. Must say the food was very good. Got full with the Menudo that we had to take or tacos to go.lol. The Agua Fresca was delicious. HANDMADE tortillas are BIG.. We will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place since I was 5. My parents used to take us here religiously every weekend, and let me tell you.... The Birria is absolutely delicious! No one makes it quite like them! The tortillas are handmade and to die for. The salsa made fresh daily and their habanero salsa has a delicious kick to it! I'm 27 years old now and still coming here whenever I can. Word of advice, ask for the meat without the bone I believe it's called maciza. It takes the hassle out of eating it, and it's much more savory too!
google avatar

Zury A.

Yelp
My rate is one star not bcuz of the food!. The food YES it was amazing, great taste and their hand made tortillas were so good too, to be my first time trying out this place!. BUT MY RATE is for the customer service I was given today.if you order for takeout, BEFORE you walk out of their restaurant make sure YOU check that your order is correct!. NOT THEM. At least that's what Carlos told me When I went back the second time to complain about my order... the reason I went back was bcuz Angelica who took my order the first time told me to stop by and pick up the correct one ... and when I did She was already gone for the day and never notified them about my order. So Carlos wanted to charge me again. At the end he ended up telling me with an attitude in front of the customers and the rest of the employees who were listening "YOU KNOW WHAT JUST TAKE IT, IS JUST A QUESADILLA ANYWAYS"... I was shocked by his respond . I told him that it wasn't just about a quesadilla it was also about the customer service and also because of his attitude towards me he had just lost one customer(ME) he then responded laughing out loud "it's ok we always get new customers everyday anyways"... i felt so humiliated and disrespected that I grabbed my food, turned around and left. I thought getting on his level wasn't gonna get me no where since I also have asked to speak to Jose the manager but him nor the rest of the employees couldn't or wanted to tell me when he's in
google avatar

Judah T.

Yelp
Delicious. It's become one of my new favorites. Planning on going there any time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Angel G.

Yelp
Wasn't what we expected, menu was plain and boring barely any options never will I come back here ... they were nice just wasn't genna be what I was looking for . Wasn't the Instagram one we were looking for .

Yelp
google avatar

Bernard L.

Yelp
Best birria I've had ever. Place feels like home and very east los feels. Buy the Birria and ask for fat, and your juice to be out in a cup.

Luca M.

Yelp
Simply the best birria de chivo, the tacos de cabeza, OMG, BOMB, those tortillas, and even the staff are the best.
