"Like the torta ahogada , birri ais a culinary specialty in Guadalajara, served everywhere from street-food stalls to sit-down restaurants. To leave the Pearl of the West without sampling it would be a loss, as it offersa quintessential taste of the city. Though there are plenty of places in Guadalajara where you can order birria , Birriería las 9 Esquinas is a favorite for its spicy, slow-cooked meat stew, typically made with lamb or goat. Local lore has it that this restaurant was the first ever to serve the dish."

Such a cool, atmospheric spot with super friendly staff! The food is seriously delicious — super fresh and totally authentic. They even make the tortillas right in front of you, which is awesome. Honestly, this is one of the best places I’ve ever had birria. If you’re into real Mexican flavors, you’ve gotta check this place out. Can’t wait to come back!

I thought the birria was ok. I prefer a stronger flavor. The small serving is small. I should have ordered the bigger size . The quesadillas were good. The salsas were excellent. The agua fresca was great. My favorite part was the beautiful open kitchen. The restaurant is beautiful. Great colors. All open walls. Beautiful small plaza in the center.

•May 2025• the Horchata was refreshing and delicious! Poblano Pepper Mole with chicken was the best meal I’ve had in Guadalajara so far.

Google
The staff was very friendly and service was super fast. The goat birrieria was not to our taste but it must be authentic as there were a lot of local people enjoying their food in the restaurant.

We were given wonderful recommendations from our server. The stewed goat meat was fantastic, the best I have had in Guadalajara. The broth was flavorful and the meat was tender. I can't wait to return! We were seated in a beautifully decorated area. Our server was very accommodating and helped us navigate the menu. Thanks for a wonderful meal!

It’s absolutely delicious. I highly recommend you come try this place! And make sure to get their signature slow-cooked goat birria — it’s a must!

Out of all restaurants we’ve been to in Guadalajara, this one is the best! Make sure to try their staple dish and guacamole.

Google
Probably the best birria I’ve had! The meat was tender and consomé was super flavorful. The barbacoa was also really good with freshly made tortillas and salsas. They had this green salsa with chunks of avocado that was AMAZING. The right amount of spice. Definitely going back when I visit Guadalajara again!

Yelp

Yelp
A true gem of Guadalajara. The restaurant occupies 2 spaces right next to each other and has a lot of indoor and outdoor options for dining. Walking into the space open to the courtyard we my partner and I were quickly attended to and helped by the friendly staff. There are both Spanish and English menus offered. The birria here is what's so special so that is the exact thing we ordered. As we waited for our plates to arrive, just soaking in all the traditional Latin decor, on a beautiful sunny day felt like a glimpse into the deep history of food culture here in Gua. As the salsas began making their way to the table, i immediately adored the choice of dish wear. Its traditional aesthetic made the already historic feeling even more apparent. All the ingredients were very fresh as there were bulky bags of their vegetables placed along side their kitchen which is viewable by all their patrons. The staff here was lovely. I enjoyed talking with the ladies cooking in the kitchen and admired their openness to conversation while cooking up premier birria. It was special to me to establish a minor connection with the women responsible for such savory and delicious birria, consomé and nice hand made lemonade. The dreamy restaurant delivered great bites for a hearty and delicious meal. I'd easily recommend this spot to anyone looking for authentic birria experience in Guadalajara. It was one of my favorite spots!

Yelp
This place offers the BEST birria de chivo en Guadalajara! The waitstaff are attentive, nice and proactive, in meeting all your needs.

Yelp
I loved this little restaurant. The seating is open air and beautiful, peacefully located next to a small courtyard. The decor and menu is traditional Mexican. We came specifically for the Birria tacos which did not disappoint, though were quite different than the kind of birria we are used to in America! The Birria here is less greasy and relies on authentic, fresh flavors. It was very delicious! The service was kind and efficient. I recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for a classic Mexico experience.

Yelp
Loved the birria de chivo, very tender and flavorful! Definite going back on our next time we visit! Service was excellent and the ambiance was perfect for a Sunday morning when we went. Quiet, peaceful and calmed.

Yelp
I went twice on my last trip. The food was so delicious, we of course had the Birria but we also tried the Cochinita pibil, queso fundido, consume de pollo, consume de chivo, everything was so good I can't tell you any of it was bad. The service was prompt and they were very attentive My only issue was on my first visit they tried to charge us for some tacos so I believe it was like 80 more pesos. We obviously thought it was an accident Second time: when I paid the check, I showed him I was paying 100 in pesos cash for the tip and whole bill on the card. He had me sign on the hand help but I noticed it was more than the check and he was trying to be quick and take the card reader but I told him it was more. He said he accidentally added 10% tip to the tab. This happen twice and on the second time it was far too shady to let go. CHECK YOUR RECIPT AND CHECK WHAT YOU SIGN FOR WHEN YOU PAY CARD!!!!! Not All people have bad intentions but there are a few.

Yelp
Beautiful birrieria, such a cute restaurant, with great staff and delicious food. I got the classic birria de chivo (small portion) and loved it! Very flavorful, a little spicy, it came with variety of salsas, beans & home made tortillas. My cousin had the birria tacos, it was an order of 3 with quite a bit of meat. I really enjoyed the variety of salsas, all were unique and very flavorful, my fave was probably the green one as it came with chunks of avocado. While it was a great experience, I did try better birria in other nearby restaurants. I still recommend it, and would visit again!

Yelp
I'm from Ontario CA and the flavors the birriera plate are mouth watering. Great place to enjoy with family. Only negative thing is bathroom is super tiny. lol

Yelp
Wow! From the mother land straight to your plate! This Birriera is spot is authentic in every way! Located in the center of this small town near centro Guadalajara, it seems untouched from time when you step inside! I do t need to say it but make sure you get the Birriera De Chivo with sides of quesadillas or you can be bold and just get queso Birriera tacos with a sid eon consume!! Try anything with cheese and I'm sure you will be pleased!

Yelp
This has been one of my favorite stops for food so far. I loved the birria tacos, fresh juice, and cheese. The whole experience was great. The decor was cool and there was a series of musicians stopping by which was a cool experience.

Yelp
We were very excited for the birria here. They are very friendly and they brought out delicious salsas and homemade chips. The tortillas were also handmade. Got the birria tacos and barbacoa de chivo (goat). To be honest both were only ok. Everything looked amazing but lacked a little flavor for me. But the service was great and friendly. There was a cool vintage green car outside as well. I'm giving it slightly higher star rating because of the delicious salsas. Prices were very reasonable.
google avatar

Yelp
The Birria stew was some of the spiciest food I've ever eaten but I can't blame the establishment for my weak spice tolerance. I still finished all of my food because it was so good but I paid the price for weeks. The drinks were so good but did nothing to relieve my pain. The chips and salsa were also great but had their own heat which didn't help. Their tortillas were so good I got 3 orders to go and made great quesadillas with them at home. Despite my suffering, it was totally worth it and I'd do it again.

Yelp
THE best spot for tacos de Birria. If it's your first time in Guadalajara, I highly recommend you try this spot. It's central to the historic sites and the neighborhood of the restaurant is perfect for pictures. The servers and chefs were so friendly and welcoming. We wanted to try everything! There was even a mariachi that came in and sang songs. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Excelente Café y la Birria de Chivo no se diga!! Muy buen servicio y buen ambiente! Definitivamente hay que venir aquí cuando Visiten GDL!

Yelp
Everything about this place is great! The Tacos de Birria are to die for. The service is really friendly and what better way to start your day with a great cafe de Hoya with some mariachi music. I totally recommend this place if you are visiting Guadalajara.

Yelp
Birria: 10/10 only thing I wish they had was that they would fry them. Make them crunchy. The tortillas are soft in other words. Barbacoa: is amazing. Super soft. Full of flavor. (Both broths are mouth watering). The jerricallas here are probably the best I've had. The flavor is everything this dessert is meant to be. Orange juice is freshly made and reminds me of Porto's. You can never go wrong with it.

Yelp
I'll start out with a confession: I'm something of a birria enthusiast. Anytime I'm in an area that serves birria I'm scouting for any hole-in-the-wall with abuela in the kitchen making birria from her abuela's recipe. How would I describe Birriería Las 9 Esquinas (literally: "Birria Place at Nine Corners")? Maybe "Upscale Birria"? I say that because I'm a self-professed hole-in-the-wall birria fan boi, and this is much nicer than I'm accustomed to. Birria tends to come in two varieties: Res (beef) or Chivo (goat). This is the pure goat birria experience. But it's a lot milder "goat taste" than de chivo can sometimes be. Once you are seated you'll be presented with a panoply of sauces and condiments, and a small basket of house-fried tortilla chips. Try each sauce; they are all terrific, from "baby-food" mild to "better-check-yourself" hot. The birria is served with a hot basket of fresh, hand-made tortillas. And each bite is a little taste of heaven. Falling apart tender, juicy, and dripping with flavor. Yes, the menu has several other items, but I've only ever had the birria and never been disappointed. The ambiance is friendly, rustic, just a tiny bit cluttered, but in a really welcoming way. If you can't tell, I love this place! One of the most endearing features is the big-screen TV high on the wall. Normally I'm not a fan of TVs in restaurants, but this one is always tuned to some channel that serves up old black-and-white Mexican movies 24/7. It's endearing, and just one more thing that makes me love this place. I hope someday to meet you there! Fun Fact: I don't know that there are actually nine street corners here; I've never counted. But there's a birria joint on almost every corner. My bucket list includes "Try 'em all!"

Yelp
The birria in this place was very soft, very fresh, very tasty, the whole vibe in this place was beautiful , very old Mexico , the service was exceptional . I will definitely come back .

Yelp
One of the worst places in Guadalajara, don't go there, or go check it by yourself, the problem is that I believed the reviews, that was bad.

Barbara L.

Yelp
This cute little corner restaurant has great quesabirria! So glad we checked it out. I also had the chicken soup, caldo de pollo, it hit the spot.

Yelp
It was our first day in Guadalajara (back in November), so we had to check out this infamous restaurant. My friend ordered a Mexican Coke and I opted for a glass of horchata. Our server brought out some complimentary chips and a variety of salsas to start with. Everything was pretty good so far! Of course we ordered the birria, which came with bean and tortillas as well. Since it was my first time having it, it wasn't what I have seen in photos, so I asked if they could fry the tortillas, so that it could be crispy. Now this was what I was waiting for and it was very good! I guess this is not the traditional way to eat it, but that's how I like it LOL. Definitely give this spot a try if you happen to be travelling here.

Elmaleanteoc C.

Yelp
It's a nice place to eat, birria! The place is located in a good place, easy to find. They have a great food selection. #foodie #mexicanfood #yummy

Yelp
Delicious food. Traditional barbacoa and/or birria. Absolutely tender and delicious. They serve the food with 3 salsas that are garlicky and a little spicy. The service is extremely friendly and fast. Highly recommend. Price is very reasonable as well.

Yelp
I picked this place to go eat due to it's good reviews, best choice I made. There are two locations across from each other but the food and service is the same. I went to the restaurant that has a light green Volkswagen parked in front of the restaurant " forgot to take a picture of it" waiter was polite and friendly the food was just outstanding and delicious everything was delicious I almost ate the plate and napkins. This place makes you feel like if you are eating at someone's home it has that homie feeling. After eating you can go handout at the little plaza they have there it's nice and quiet and it's excellent for pictures. I will be eating here again for sure. Good job to the owners and staff

Adrian D.

Yelp
Excelente servicio y la comida was fenomenal. Fuimos en lunes y no había mucho ambiente pero fue perfecto para una noche agradable

Diner S.

Yelp
Beautiful traditional setting. The service team are very attentive and helpful. We had the beef birria and goat quesobirria. Both were delicious and cooked to perfection. They provide you with an array of salsas. The tres leches cake was ok.
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
Love this little goat stew restaurant in the Central District. The stew comes out and personal serving bowls with tortillas, onions, salsa and other condiments on the table. Typical drink selection of services and Agua Fresca. Good service, they hardly left the table. Some mariachi's we're playing if that is your thing. Yelper tip - probably the smallest bathroom I've encountered in Guadalajara, might take a contortion or two to get in and out!
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast spot! For two, we ordered the birria (goat stew) and then tacos de birria (comes with three). We also got chips, salsa, lots of garnishes, tortillas and beans on the side. For the stew, make sure to put the beans in the tortilla, roll it and then dip it into the stew instead of putting the meat into the tortilla. Add lots of onions into the stew too. The restaurant is huge! Tons of seating, fun music being played and beautiful decor!
google avatar

Mauricio M.

Yelp
This was the best place we had breakfast at. The food was all Exelent. Service too. The restaurant is beautiful. We had the quesabirrias, barbacoa, and birria. The coffee was really good! Highly recommended.

Yelp
Delicious food, good service, friendly employees. Two restaurants across sidewalk from each other. Our location on the corner was noisier but fine. Food delivered fast and was hot. Fresh tortillas. Cold drinks. Less than $20 including tip.

Yelp
Never have I ever imagined myself eating goat... not until I came to Birriería las 9 Esquinas. This restaurant joint is nestled in the heart of downtown/Centro, and convenient to get to if you're visiting the Cathedral or Plaza de las Armas. I came here at the recommendation of my Mexican friend, and I'm glad I did. This restaurant is cozy, with a rustic vibe as it is situated in a little square, next to a beautiful fountain. You can hear the fountain's water as you eat. Definitely a peaceful, slower paced vibe, which was nice. They accept credit card here, which is a plus. I ate the birría here, but the smaller size (tamaño chica). It was quite a bit of food, given that you eat the birría with tortillas, and refried beans. They also give you chips and salsa, which can be filling. Anyhow, I ate my birría wrong - I realized my mistake after I finished my meal. I ate the birría, wrapping some of the meat and beans in my tortilla, almost like eating a taco. Wrong... whoops! The way you're supposed to eat it is as follows. Add lime, onions and hot sauce to your birría. Eat birría and drink soup with spoon. Add the beans in your tortilla, and roll it up like an egg roll. Dip the tortilla into the birría soup and eat a few bites. Eat some of the birría, drink some of the soup...savor. The birría, needless to say was very tasty (even though I did eat it wrong). Goat is pretty delicious, especially in birría form. I'd definitely come back!

Edgar T.

Yelp
Favorite restaurant in Guadalajara. They're definitely the best spot from the 3 Birrierias in the plaza.

Yelp
Great food, nice Chente music in the background, relaxing patio, courteous and very efficient service without a long a$$ line wait (you know what I mean?) My husband ordered a birria de chivo en consomé and I ordered some barbacoa de borrego. They were served with an assortment of tasty salsas and chips. Both plates were very good. Looking forward to coming back again!

Yelp
We stopped by after a local friend recommended this place for breakfast. The restaurant is located in a welcoming and beautiful little town square. Upon arrival we were intsantly greeted and seated. You can tell by the guests that this is a well known spot for locals, but we did not feel out of place. We ordered the small order of birria, some quesadillas, and chilaquiles. Everything was delicious, i cluding the salsas and coffee. But, I've got to commend their birria. Typically, birria is made with goat, and unfortunately not everyone can master it. This birria was exceptionally delicious. It lacked the foul odor most places cannot shake off. I can eat this for days. I highly recommend this place for birria, breakfast, or just a coffee. Also, arrive early as this place can get crowded.
google avatar

Yelp
Best food I have ever had in Guadalajara. The service is great, the location is hip and the atmospheres is fun. Two sodas, two beers, two entrées, and two desserts. The total bill was $21.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing!!!! We had the Barbacoa and birria quesadillas for finger licking good!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Bottomline: A MUST stop when you are in the Historic center of Guadalajara. Excellent home cooked, authentic Mexican food. My family and I (10 of us) were on vacation in Guadalajara and thanks to Yelp, we had an amazing meal here. The Birria was excellent. The soup of the Birria was my favorite. For dessert, having the cafe de la olla was also great. The service was very fast and the place was very clean. We would all return here again.

Yelp
Grande, que grande sitió. This place came highly recommended by my Airbnb host. We took a short Uber ride from the center of the old city and found ourselves in the most beautiful plaza. We walked in and we were immediately greeted and seated. We ordered our horchata drinks and waited patiently for the birría. It was a group portion that did not fail to impress. Handmade tortillas, freshly cut onions, and various salsas completed the dish. My partner and eagerly devoured our birría. I have to admit it was the best I had in Guadalajara. I cannot wait to go back! ¡Provecho!
google avatar

Karina N.

Yelp
This place was recommended by our Uber driver. The portions are small and lacking taste. Ambiance was good.

David R.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. So tasty. Lovely setting on a square with a fountain. The birria is excellent.
google avatar

Serg G.

Yelp
Pictures kind of tell you a lot. 1st class service. Birria one of the best I have ever had. Salsas where all great. Tortillas not sure if made by hand but wow. Worth the try for sure.
google avatar

Destijl S.

Yelp
The best you can get in Guadalajara for birria. One order of the birria, quesabirria, guacamole, 3 birria tacos was able to fill 4 grown men. The flavor is the cleanest & most pure I have ever tasted for birria in my life. The staff is super attentive and nice. Felt like ai went to visit a friend's house in a charming old neighborhood, that's what this area feels like, so great.
google avatar

Jr N.

Yelp
Have absolutely no idea how this place has bad reviews. The food, the Birria which is their specialty is the best I have ever had. Not sure if it's appropriate to say on yelp but o had a foodgasm. My goodness it was so flippin good. Never in my life in any part of Mexico have I ever had such great tasting birria. Anywho. Place is legit. This is Mexican, it's authentic. I recommend.
google avatar

Joanne B.

Yelp
Loved this place! We wandered to this plaza from our hotel and discover a gem. This was like my dream Mexican kitchen. The food was great and so was the service. The setting is perfect with a gorgeous plaza and fountain. It's all very clean and feels like old Mexico. We went back twice during our stay in town. The Cochinita Pibil was excellent and the flan was a perfect ending. Mariachis playing outside was delightful.
google avatar

Crissy R.

Yelp
This place was just magnificent. If your in El Centro de Guadalajara, make sure and add this on your places to come eat at. The place is huge and the ambiance adds to the personal touch. I had a rather large party of six girls and there was plenty of room to where we didn't feel cramped. Per usual, we all ordered different dishes and shared. The chips and salsa that accompany your meal are hard to not keep eating. The salsas are so flavorful and even compliment your meal quite well. Between one of my friends and I, we split the enfrijoladas and tacos de birria. From start to finish, I could not stop eating. I was just short of licking my plate clean. The staff here were very attentive, friendly, and just overall great. Along with a great meal, we also had the pleasure of mariachis sing to us prior to the start of us eating. Overall, great experience and great food. This is a definite recommendation if you are in El Centro!

Yelp
Lo mejor de lo mejor, si quieres visitar un buen lugar para comer ven y prueba mi birria.

Yelp
You would not expect us to go searching for a hot dish when it was 96° outside, but we were told that if we did not try Birria (a goat stew) In Guadalajara, Then there was no point in us visiting. So glad that we were able to get in before this place closed and were able to order both local dish and dessert prior to closing. All of the servers were friendly and accommodating and service was fast. It was really fun to watch the chefs cook while we were seated. The restaurant looks over a small plaza, so the view and the ambience was very nice for the time of evening that we visited. The chips and salsa that were served prior to the meal, we're so flavorful and so spicy and tasty, that we could not wait to get our hands on the main dish. When it arrived, you would not expect so much flavor in a dish that looks brown (for a lack of better description), but the broth was multi dimensional and the meat literally melted in your mouth. It was salted to perfection and the cherry on top was the Guadalajara Version of flan, which I'm so glad we made room for! Would highly recommend this place. It was delicious and I can understand why it is a local favorite!!!

Yelp
Very cool environment. Great local flare. Food was good. Portions are not very big. But at the price you can order 2 dishes no problem. Was a cool ending to a nice trip

Yelp
This restaurant is in a great location for walking off your food afterwards. There is a nice indoor garden as well that makes for a great backdrop for photos. The food had hits and misses. Barbacoa was spot on - 5 stars Molletes with chorizo and Flor de calabaza - 5 stars Cafe de olla - 4.5 stars Chilaquiles - 3.5 stars (tortillas weren't that crispy) Quesadillas with various fillings - 4 stars Enchiladas - 3 stars
