Never have I ever imagined myself eating goat... not until I came to Birriería las 9 Esquinas. This restaurant joint is nestled in the heart of downtown/Centro, and convenient to get to if you're visiting the Cathedral or Plaza de las Armas. I came here at the recommendation of my Mexican friend, and I'm glad I did.
This restaurant is cozy, with a rustic vibe as it is situated in a little square, next to a beautiful fountain. You can hear the fountain's water as you eat. Definitely a peaceful, slower paced vibe, which was nice. They accept credit card here, which is a plus.
I ate the birría here, but the smaller size (tamaño chica). It was quite a bit of food, given that you eat the birría with tortillas, and refried beans. They also give you chips and salsa, which can be filling.
Anyhow, I ate my birría wrong - I realized my mistake after I finished my meal. I ate the birría, wrapping some of the meat and beans in my tortilla, almost like eating a taco. Wrong... whoops!
The way you're supposed to eat it is as follows. Add lime, onions and hot sauce to your birría. Eat birría and drink soup with spoon. Add the beans in your tortilla, and roll it up like an egg roll. Dip the tortilla into the birría soup and eat a few bites. Eat some of the birría, drink some of the soup...savor.
The birría, needless to say was very tasty (even though I did eat it wrong). Goat is pretty delicious, especially in birría form. I'd definitely come back!
