The 8 Best Indian Restaurants In Austin

"As the name suggests, biryani is the specialty at this Indian restaurant in North Austin that serves nearly two dozen varieties, including an Arabic goat mandi only offered on the weekends. The biryani is tasty, if a little light on the meat. So our favorite things here are actually the chats and village-style goat curries. We’re not sure what village it’s styled after, but we can only imagine that happy goats roam its lands and the air is filled with the fragrant aroma of cloves, cardamom, and other toasted warming spices. Goat is what you’re here for, in some form or another. " - nicolai mccrary

Biryani Garden Review - North Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"As the name suggests, biryani is the specialty at this Indian restaurant in North Austin that serves nearly two dozen varieties, including an Arabic goat mandi only offered on the weekends. The biryani is tasty, if a little light on the meat, but our favorite things here are the chaats and goat curries. The dining room looks like it lived a former life as a Mediterranean restaurant, with stone walls and brick archways dividing up the room, while chandeliers and fake flowers hang from the tall ceilings. But this is not a place to judge by its name or its appearance. If anything, use the crowd spilling out the front door—or the intense aroma of toasted spices in the dining room—as an indicator that you’re in for a good meal. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary photo credit: Nicolai McCrary photo credit: Nicolai McCrary photo credit: Nicolai McCrary" - Nicolai McCrary

I really don’t like to leave 1-Star Reviews, but I have to be truthful. Went here based on 4.6 Reviews and Recent Excellent Reviews. Got there at approximately 8pm, the place was empty and took a seat. 1st Red Flag: No Chai whatsoever, closing time was 10pm. 2nd Red Flag: Ordered a Majestic Chicken & Lasooni Gobi, the server came back and said the Chicken Majestic wasn’t available. Upon requesting another Chicken Appetizer, she informed us that there was NO Chicken available, except Chicken Dum Biryani! It’s midway through the week & no chicken inventory?! In the restaurant industry that’s an irregularity that has to correlate with the markets. Anyway, the Lasooni Gobi (a type of Garlic-Fried Cauliflower that supposed to be finished in a Savory, Spicy Gravy) was brought out and it was DRY in appearance. We were hungry, so we started eating it, but it was extremely oily and over-fried, not even a semi-gravy. We asked for some type of Dipping Sauce, one which was Ketchup, but the other two smelled & tasted spoiled—an absolute no, no for a restaurant. It shouts, “cutting corners” & no consideration for the customer’s health & safety. Majestic Paneer (in place of the Chicken): Majestic Sauce or Semi-Gravy is Typically a Yellow-Orange Sauce that coats Chicken, Paneer, Vegetables, etc and renders a Creamy Semisweet, Tangy, Mustardy and Spicy Taste (almost umami-like), but although the sauce was almost there with taste, it was gritty and tasted like it was mixed with raw cornstarch, along with missing the finishing flavors. The other issue was that the Paneer’s textures were inconsistent—some pieces were like stone, some chewy and others perfectly cooked. Butter Naans were saturated in some type of butter, ghee and/or oil. We paid the bill in full after we expressed our issues. At this time, I would not recommend this restaurant.

We visited them on a weekend to try the weekend special Mandi Biryani. There was no printed menu available. The QR code on table was worn out. I had to go to other table to scan and find the menu. We like spicy food, specially from Andhra but, Mandi Biryani was unnecessarily spicy. Delicious otherwise. The quantity was sufficient just for two people. The bill was surprising because the menu lists it as $24.99 but the bill was $34.60. That's 39% more. When I asked about it, the person at reception told us that the menu is outdated and prices have since then increased because of inflation. It doesn't take much to tell this to the customers in advance. Extra spice and Misleading price are the two reasons why we might not be visiting here again. Hope they improve.

Our recent dining experience at Biryani Garden was a delighted experience. We had the pleasure of indulging in the Goat Mandi, a weekend special, and the Dahi ka Kabab, both of which left an indelible mark on our taste buds. Goat Mandi (5/5): The Goat Mandi was the epitome of culinary excellence. Served as a weekend special, this dish was a true showstopper. The succulent pieces of goat meat were perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The Mandi rice, infused with aromatic spices, complemented the meat splendidly. The generous portion size made it ideal for sharing. Adding an image with a water bottle for size comparison. Dahi ka Kabab (5/5): The Dahi ka Kabab was a delightful appetizer that perfectly complemented the richness of the Goat Mandi. The kababs were incredibly well-balanced, with a crispy exterior giving way to a creamy and flavorful interior that melts in your mouth. Service (5/5): The service at Biryani Garden was impeccable. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and eager to ensure our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. Ambiance (4/5): The restaurant's ambiance was inviting and comfortable, providing a perfect setting for a relaxed and enjoyable meal.

Came here for dinner. Staff was friendly and were seated immediately. Food was excellent! I had the medium spice Lamb Korma which came with a side of rice and I added a separate side of the Chilli naan. The atmosphere was pretty quiet and slow at the time, but very comfortable, clean and surrounded by decorative flowers. Would definitely come back again to try other options on the menu.

Google
People are super nice n food is amazing..loved the kebab.. seasoning spot on. The biryanis specially the goat biryani was delectable.. we asked for the spicier version n it came with just the right amount of kick. Among all the Indian places that we have been to in Austin, I would give Biryani Garden a big thumbs up for their portion size..Would definitely come back

Google
Visited on a weekend afternoon. Ambience is good, fast service and for Togo there was little wait time given that its a weekend. Podi chicken & shrimp appetizer are good. Goat Briyani was having less flavor. I understand the taste differs for every individual but felt could've been more spicy and flavored. #HappyDining

Google
We had an amazing experience at Biryani Garden. The service was great and the food tasted authentic too. The staff was very careful with suggesting dishes for our friend with food allergies. We are definitely coming back for more!

Google
Giving 3 stars because I have had a mixed experience. A year back we used to order everyday from this place. After the management was changed, this place went downhill! Service and food, both started deteriorating. We had an elaborate talk with the new management person right after he took over. Looked like he had a vision to completely revamp this place but his actions didn’t reflect it! The place got shut down!! That is why you can see that the recent reviews are bad but a year old reviews are fine!

Yelp
Excellent food, great service. No ice for our drinks, which is a negative for me personally, but I'm not deducting stars for that, as I know that is a cultural norm. I would definitely recommend this excellent restaurant for a great Indian meal.

Yelp
We saw this restaurant on a foodie Instagram channel and my husband loves Indian food so when we were in North Austin we made a stop. It was by far the BEST Indian food we have had in Austin and my husband said the best Indian he's had in the US (he's from England and is very particular/picky with his Indian so a very high honor indeed). We shared a chicken tikka masala (medium spice), bread basket, and a chicken biryani (also medium spice). The food was delicious - the chicken tikka was spectacular. Large portion, generous amount of chicken. Very creamy and rich curry spiced wonderfully. This came with a side of steamed white rice. The bread basket was BOMB- and came with a ridiculous amount of their bread items. The garlic naan was amazing, so was the onion stuffed version. The biryani we ordered was good/different. My husband didn't care for this item but I thought it was interesting. It was described as tangy and it definitely had a vibrant, punchy almost citrus like flavor. It reminded me of the preserved limes we have gotten before at other Indian restaurants - I really like these salty limes but my husband does not so that could explain why we had mixed feelings about this dish. Overall, the quantity and quality of the food was fabulous and I'd say well with the cost. The reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the space felt very dated. A fake flower wall may have been pretty when it first got put up but it didn't go really with the rest of the vibe. The tables/seats were older and overall it just felt a bit run down. It was clean though!

Yelp
Heard about this new biryani place so decided to try it out. The chicken dum biryani was tasty, masala was authentic and chicken was well cooked. No egg in the biryani so -1 on authenticity. Decor is pleasant and it's nice to see that they have made an effort, something that's lacking in many Indian restaurants in Austin.

Yelp
Biryani Garden was a disappointment in terms of food quality, taste, service, and overall dining experience. We arrived at 5pm sharp (which is when they are listed as open for dinner on Google and Yelp). Upon entering, the lights were all off and I was met with blank stares from the staff. I asked if they were open and they said they open at 5:30. When I pointed out that their online info is inaccurate, they said they'd accommodate and seat us, after which it took another 5 mins for them to turn the lights on. They asked us to use the QR code to access their menu, but the QR code was completely disintegrated and didn't work. When we requested physical menus, the waitress asked us to give her our phone so she could "try" scanning the QR Code (which didn't work of course), and then walked around with our phone to other tables to scan their QR codes for us. It's quite ridiculous that they didn't have a single physical menu in the entire restaurant for us to look at. We ordered papdi chaat for appetizer, chicken malai kabab, malai kofta, naan and goat biryani for dinner. The chaat was not worth the $9 - completely lacking in spice and flavor, and didn't taste fresh at all. The malai kofta was not at all authentic and it is evident that they're catering to a non-Indian palette. It was completely lacking flavor and was severely under salted. The naan and goat biryani were decent but nothing to write home about. Our meal was served on ceramic plates, but we were given plastic forks + napkins to eat with, and Kirkland water bottles to drink out of. For a restaurant charging $15 average per dish, I expect more than that. This is cheapness at a whole new level. Finally- the ambiance. I've seen other reviews speaking to how the owners of this restaurant made an effort to decorate it nicely. Sadly this is also NOT true. The prior establishment in this location - Cafe Eden - had the same floral decor. You can see this for yourself if you google "Cafe Eden Austin". Avoid this place - all you will get is under-spiced, flavorless Indian food coupled with an underwhelming dining experience. The fact that it has such good reviews speaks volumes to the need for decent indian restaurants in Austin.

Yelp
Man! Took in this place after David Douglas review. Very good! I got the Ulavacharu Goat Biryani and it did not disappoint. It is buried under the fragrant jasmine rice, and covered in the delicious sweet goat meat that has the unique spicy taste full of flavor. Eating with the garlic naan folded over a spoonful creates that perfect bite. Each dish i looked at came with a spicy version which is what i love. Can't wait to get the craving again!

Yelp
Food: 9/10 Chili Gobi: 10/10. This dish was sooooo good, very spicy, but very good!! Hyd Chicken Dum Biryani: 8/10. This dish tasted decent, and had a lot of chicken hidden in the rice. This portion was huuuuge. Definitely can be split with another person as a meal. Punjabi Samosa: 10/10. This somosa was so good!! I definitely would've eaten another one if I wasn't so full already. Garlic Naan: 10/10. The best garlic naan I've ever had. It was a bit oily, but the seasoning and the way it was cooked made this excellent. Service: 6/10. There was only one person working in the front of the restaurant. We waited a bit to get seated because she was with a customer before us. The food took a little bit to come out as well, even though we were the only ones inside. They did have a lot of take out orders though. Ambiance: 8/10. Pretty spacious seating inside, but we were the only group there. They seem quite new and the place is a little far from the main roads, so that's why there's probably not a lot of foot traffic. Definitely a hidden gem to try out! The portions they give are great for the price.

Yelp
Excellent high quality Indian food prepared by Hyderabadi chefs. This means a couple of things: they really understand how to make biryani and the food is spicy HOT. The lowest level (medium) would count as "very spicy" at most other restaurants, so if you are not from Hyderabad, you may ask if they can go even a notch lower. That said, the food is of such high quality, you really cannot miss this place. Try an old standard like the chicken tikka masala to see what I mean. Rich, deep flavors and super tender chicken. But again, expect it to be spicier than normal. The service is friendly and attentive and the place is clean and airy. It was almost empty when I went on Sunday for lunch. It's a bit out of the way, so I suspect they do a lot of take out business. I kept hearing there are no good Indian restaurants in Austin. Not true, once you discover this gem.

Yelp
Service is fast! A fan of their masala egg curry, biryanis and the Hyderabadi dessert. Will definitely go back for more

Yelp
Ordered Chicken Kadai and Garlic Naan Ordered mild spicy (mild/medium/spicy) and it was perfect amount of spice for me ^_^ Chicken thighs were perfectly cooked and tender. Great flavor!

JRam C.

Yelp
The food was good, tried garellu and natu kodi curry, had chicken and goat mandi. Room for improvement

Yelp
From out of town and found this on Yelp. WOW oh Wow absolutely delicious!!! Nice ambiance and nice staff. They were out of a couple things we wanted but everything we ordered was very good and very spicy. If they wouldn't have been out of the 2 things we wanted I would have given 5 stars.

Yelp
Coming from the East coast it was hard to find really good Indian food. Today I found it! Amazing chicken tikka Masala and the Goat Biryani.

Yelp
Great Indian food! Got the tikka masala (chicken) special and it was excellent! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Got the Ulavacharu Biryani for takeout, possibly one of the best biryani I have had in US!

Madhu R.

Yelp
We ordered kachi goat biryani, it was nice with tinder meat & soft rice. Non veg thali was fine, loved their sambar & Papu in their thali than the non veg curries. Butter naan in thali was so fresh & good, loved it. Their apricot pudding was more like bread pudding, liked the Gulabjam though.

Yelp
This is my favorite Indian food restaurant in Austin! The spice level is correct and everything is from scratch and delicious!

Andrew B.

Yelp
Came to try out this place because it was new. Was very impressed! Biryani was good, samosas were very good, and the chicken 65 was good. Service was timely and they were very kind. Very nice cafe atmosphere. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Dined in twice n ordered to-go 2 more times in the last 2 months. Every time the food was awesome n exceeded my expectations. Staff are very friendly n helpful. They take care of your special requests. Highly recommend this place. Pricing is also fair n portion sizes are good, especially the to-go Biryani portions are huge!!!!!

Jane H.

Yelp
My partner and I went here for the first time, and we were very happy with our meal. We ordered naan, samosas, chicken tikka masala, and chicken biryani. They were all very good, and most of the food came out very quick! The restaurant kept the decorations from the restaurant that used to be there, and I'm glad they did, because it's very pretty and cozy inside.

Yelp
Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with this place. We had ordered a chicken biryani and couple of non vegetarian appetizers. The meat was surely very stale. However, the staff seemed nice and welcoming. I hope they don't serve stale food again.

Cameron D.

Yelp
Great food and service. My wife had the Tikka masala and it was delicious. I tried gongura chicken biryani for the first time and it was awesome. For dessert they gave us double ka meetha. Never had this before either and it was amazing. Definitely recommend this place.

Person U.

Yelp
Very authentic Hyderabad food. Hyderabad biryani and Special chicken biryani is very good. Excellent service Great ambiance as well

Mandy S.

Yelp
This place is delicious! I really enjoyed the flavors and it not being too spicy. They have outside tables so we brought our dog with us that is 17 years old and just laid there but the waitress was still scared of him. So I would say it's not pet friendly. We had to go inside to order because she didn't want to come back out and another employee brought out our food. One thing I did not like is that they don't have a physical menu. It's all done from your phone with no pictures. I like to see what the food looks like first. Overall great place and we will be back!

Vamsi P.

Yelp
Ordered Dum Ka Chicken curry and omg what a surprise it was. Simply loved it. I love the fact that the chicken is slow cooked for this curry. The texture, the taste and the fried onions reminded me of the Hyderabadi Haleem. Loved it. It's a must try with tandoori roti.

Yelp
wonderfully authentic cuisine and great staff also, would highly recommend for anyone that loves Indian food and for new comers also.
