Do you live in the South? Are you new to the South and want to know why Southern people are very comfortable being expansive??? Try Biscuit Belly. I was visiting a girlfriend who is originally from NYC and she brought me here for brunch and it's biscuits and gravy on steroids!!!
I am a southerner by birth and love a good biscuit so I was game but I wasn't ready. The Mamas Boy, which is what she ordered was a chicken thigh, breaded and fried, with pimiento cheese, spicy pickles, AND AN ENTIRE FRIED GREEN TOMATO on a biscuit. I wasn't ready. The flavor combinations were/are epic.
But, that seemed like a bit much to me, so I went with the vegetarian combo which was THREE fried green tomatoes, cheese, and mushroom gravy on a biscuit. I know, so much healthier. *deep sigh*
The bonuts are tiny biscuits rolled in sugar and served with cream cheese or chocolate dipping sauces ... because there aren't enough calories in the entrees.
I must admit that the food was absolutely delicious. Warm, filling, perfectly seasoned, and the portions were large, but they weren't ridiculously so. It wasn't salty, covered in cheese or undercooked and the fried green tomatoes were easily some of the best I've ever had - EVEN covered in gravy, they were CRISPY, well seasoned, and tart as they should be, not greasy and soggy and bland!!!! Somebody has a darn good tomato supplier and I am here for it!!
For the mehs: my biscuit bottom half was a leeetle soggy - this was mitigated heavily by the fact that I had gravy on it. It would have been an outrage as a standalone biscuit. As a southerner, I am fairly certain they make and freeze the biscuits and "bake them fresh" from frozen. It does work unless they're not wrapped well and get moist or start thawing first, which does create soggy biscuits.
Also, the coffee is maintained in a giant dispenser and it tasted a teeeense burnt ... maybe it was chicory?!? Who knows...it was strong and I had two cups but it's nothing to write home about. And, that's pretty much it. This is NOT a place to go on a diet and it is ironically, right next to Huntsville Plastic Surgery lol. I could not live in the South, I'd weigh 300 lbs. Also, the food looked and smelled so good, we dug in before I got a single picture. Sigh. Try it.
