15 Iconic Dishes That Define Nashville - Nashville - The Infatuation

"Tourists from all around the world descend upon Nashville and make the pilgrimage to Loveless Cafe for these famous biscuits. Are there better versions in town? Most definitely. But coming here is like visiting DC and not ordering the chili from Ben’s Chili Bowl—it’s an essential piece to understanding what Nashville was at a certain time and place. The cafe still uses Anne Loveless' original biscuit recipe from the 1950s, which is noteworthy, but the preparation nowadays isn’t what it used to be. Still, it’s worth tasting for yourself, and grabbing an order of their stellar grits while you’re there." - jackie gutierrez jones 2

I was very excited to try The Loveless Cafe but didn't have the time to wait 2 hours for a seat for one, as I had a flight back home to catch. The hostess told me the food next door at the gas station was the same food as inside the restaurant. Boy, do I really hope she was wrong about that. For $22.86 (including tip), I ordered the Famous Loveless Cafe Country Ham platter with 2 "scrambled eggs", home fried potatoes, gravy and a side of mac n cheese ($15.89). The potatoes were the only descent thing here. The biscuits were cold and hard as a rock, the eggs, exactly like the ones you'd find at a motel continental breakfast (likely made from powered eggs), the ham hard and dry, as if it had been microwaved and thrown into my styrofoam container, and the mac n cheese was extremely bland and had no flavor. Leaving Nashville on this note was disappointing, as I went out of my way to try this place before going home. I'm afraid the Loveless Cafe is all hype. There are much better places to spend your money in exchange for a much tastier meal. This place is quite literally, highway robbery.

Loved this place like 5 years ago but it has gone way down. Went this morning for the first time in probably 6 months and I get that prices are rising around the country but come on. The side dish is now an underwhelming ice cream scoop as apposed to an individual container, I would say I got about 1/3 of what we used to get. The sausage had been sitting out for a while and was hard as a hockey puck, I could have chipped a tooth it was that hard. The biscuit was also hard and tough at the same time and they barely filled my tea halfway. I had to throw the biscuits away so I just spent over $8 on 4 bites of hashbrown casserole and half a tea.

I’m shocked there’s anything less than 4-5 stars! Every time I’ve visited here I am never disappointed! I’ll never wait in line for loveless again, this my family’s go to quick but homemade tasting breakfast. Plus the drive thru makes it so easy! I couldn’t recommend more for that loveless taste with a quarter of the wait!

Overall it was not a bad quick breakfast. Better than most fast food and gas station grub, but pricy. And the lady serving it was pretty grumpy.

This place has amazing food. Everyone there is friendly and accommodating. My favorite was the sample of complimentary peach jam for my biscuit. I actually bought a jar to take home to Michigan. The taste reminded me of peach cobbler. Also, the sweet tea was fresh brewed and the best I have ever had. That is just a couple of some great Southern food choices.

After going to loveless cafe and finding a 2 hour wait decided to come here. The biscuits were good, the hashbrown casserole was good. But the chicken tenders were so tough I could not eat them. Definitely pales in comparison to the real deal.

I have ordered catering from here multiple times for my business. Was told this morning they could not take my order over the phone and I would have to order online. Needed a la carte along with the breakfast bar and they wouldn't take my order. The restaurant has gone WAY downhill. I used to stop there about twice a month for dinner and haven't been in over 6 months. Won't be back. Now with the new "rules" on ordering from the biscuit kitchen, I won't be back there either. That was an order for over $500

Just ate lunch there. $13 after tip. It was terrible. Sorry. Not expecting perfection, thank goodness the lady offered me some ranch, had to use on my sandwich for a little flavor. A little side of mac n cheese that was enough for 3 bites. No jelly with the biscuits. Spent $13 and got a small drink on a 90 degree day. Gee,thanks for the hospitality. Went to use the bathroom, some dude taking a dump, says lock is broke. The only thing keeping me from a one star is the people working there were somewhat nice, but could tell they didn't want to be there. Can't blame them I guess. Maybe just a bad day, because I had been there once before and it was a little better.

Yelp
3.5 Even before today's topsy-turvy and confusing world of the 2020-21-22 pandemic, indoor-outdoor, drive-thru, to mask or not to mask ("that is the question")....the state of our reviews appear to have been foreseen (in a sense) by Shakespeare, "Men judge by the complexion of the sky The state and inclination of the day." (King Richard, II Act III, Scene II) And so begins this particular review....on a bright, sunny afternoon when I was in search of fuel for both my automobile and my body. I've frequently bypassed the Shell station (in which this "kitchen" is housed) inasmuch as it is often crowded...I assume by patrons of the Loveless Cafe next door. But on this day, the pumps were all open, save for one, and so I stopped. After pumping, I decided to check the inside and was immediately drawn to one of the day's "special"....Natchez Hot Chicken Sandwich. In short, the sandwich was made-to-order; a large (5 or 6 oz?) lightly floured and well seasoned chicken breast, deep fried and served on a soft, fresh bun. It was garnished with mild, run-of-the-mill coleslaw and 3 slices of dill pickle. The flavor was savory, mildly hot (not over the top Nashville style). The light dusted coating of flour was almost over-fried (see my photo)....but was really just right for my tastes. Unfortunately that level of "fry" left resulted in the chicken being a bit dry, yet, it still held a modicum of moisture and was not chewy. All-in-all, I really enjoyed it. (I was hungry after all.) I will try to stop here again to check out the biscuits...having had the Cafe's many times. Just curious how they all stack up. Other offerings are available throughout the day and a drive-thru provides convenient no-contact pick-up.

Yelp
With a name like Loveless, you expect a baseline of quality that doesn't exist at the biscuit kitchen. Even by gas station food standards, I was not impressed. Hard as a rock fried chicken cutlet. Lukewarm hashbrown casserole. And overcooked yellow pebbles of egg substitute in watery goop. The biscuits, thankfully, are of the same recipe as Loveless and were really the only comparable menu item to the restaurant. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
Whoever doesn't give this place a 5 is Nigel Johnson. Some of the finest gas station food outside of Mississippi. Chicken biscuits are the goat. Met the guys for an early breakfast (I know double whatever). I slammed 3 cb's. CEO Baub flew the bham contingent up...including Vance. Stamo went with a special (that day only) nacho thing (he brings his own stuff so it's legit). Bens mom ordered a salad. Everyone else some form of Fried artery clogging delight. The stLouis contingent joined us and Duuty of course had menu anxiety...Sorry- no Thanksgiving platter or Mac cheese. Bill sorta stopped by but went looking for the brown juice. Will bring Diz and Cubby on next visit. Creep and Bubbles y'all are missing out. Creep, get an iPhone.

Yelp
Ordered a chicken and biscuit. Biscuit is tiny and the chicken is barely edible it's fried so hard.

Yelp
Nashville's best kept secret. Delicious breakfast food served all day!! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Zero stars yet again. Had a coupon and it was delivery, but found hair in our jam this time. I guess they remembered the syrup this time. But honestly, as a local, why do people come here? I know it has history, but even Cracker Barrel is seriously better

Yelp
Just picked up the "crispy" chicken dinner, two tenders, "home"style potatoes, Mac n cheese, and biscuits. After all the hype on social media we thought we better get on out there. Wow, are we underwhelmed! Chicken that obviously came from a commissary pre breaded, as much breading as chicken, the actual chicken was about a quarter inch thick and dry as a saltine. The potatoes had been cut by a machine to uniform size and were also dry. The Mac n cheese resembled something from the grocery store frozen section. The "famous" biscuits were doughy and flavorless. The one highlight was a tiny cup of blackberry preserves that was delicious. We will NOT be back. This food doesn't even rate being in a gas station.

Yelp
It was really good for a gas station take out restaurant. Prices are in-line with competitors but the quality is better in my opinion.

Yelp
This is one you're going to want to wait to try until masks are no longer a requirement The food is very good for drive-thru but the last two times I've either gone into the mini market or driven through I was greeted by people wearing their masks on their chin or not wearing a mask at all. Yesterday a woman was cleaning the steam trays in the counter and I was completely taken aback that she didn't have a mask on at all. I don't know the last time I've seen a food service establishment with somebody without any kind of mask much less a person who was cleaning. I felt bad because I brought a friend there thinking she could try loveless biscuits for the first time inside step the long waits at the actual restaurant. We ended up just leaving because of safety concerns.

Yelp
Be prepared. If you go thru drive thru, and there are 3 cars ahead of you, expect 25 to 30 minutes total time till you get your food.

Yelp
Not a good value for how much they're charging. Don't fall for the descriptions on the menu. The sliced turkey is not like what you get in the actual restaurant and was served with ranch dressing instead of the peach preserves. Order three full meals and you only get 3 individual tiny little jellies, about good for one biscuit a piece. The chicken tenders in the kids meal are about half the size you get when you order the exact same thing in store. Banana pudding for 4 was more like banana pudding for two at best and given the steep price, was more like pudding flavored whipped cream with just two cookies and two slices of banana. No way it could feed 4. The pulled pork was swimming in grease, put it on the plate and it just ran everywhere, all over everything. Green beans had so much black pepper in them my child and I couldn't even stand to eat them. This is not the quality the community has come to expect from Loveless. Disappointment all around.
