Our last meal in Nashville and we had to go to Biscuit Love. We were pretty hyped to go there - several websites and publications said Biscuit Love had the best biscuits in town with people waiting in long lines all day every day to get to the buttery goodness. Well, we got there at around 1:30PM, found only 3 people in line ahead of us, and ultimately found that the food was less than stellar.
East Nasty ($13.50) - Starting with the good - the biscuit here is great. It's almost like a croissant/biscuit hybrid, with the fantastic laminated layers that you can pull off in complete sheets, but with the more fluffy density of a biscuit especially as you reach the middle. The dough is salted appropriately and is super buttery and heavy. For the chicken, they use dark meat, so it's able to retain a bit more of the moisture and juices. Unfortunately, the batter here is terrible. I don't think they use the more traditional flour and/or cornstarch mixture. Instead, what they use resembles rice flour, which gives the exterior a much more delicate and chewy bite. The problem is that it doesn't stand up to liquid at all. The exterior immediately turns mushy upon contact with the sausage gravy and the inside portion of the breading where it contacted the moist meat also had a similar issue, especially where the batter was thick. I don't believe they fry to order here - our food came out within 5 minutes or so, so that only really accounts for assembly time. That might also help explain why the exterior was so mushy. The sausage gravy was okay - lots of sausage chunks with visible specks of black pepper. Unfortunately, Biscuit Love does not use fresh ground black pepper since there was no black pepper taste at all. There were black pepper grinders on the table, but the pepper inside was not whole peppercorn, and also did not taste peppery. I guess it's just there if you want to add flavorless black specks to your food.
Princess ($13.00) - This is basically a lite mild Nashville hot with barely any heat. I wasn't really expecting it to be hot in the first place given how you can't customize the heat levels but it was less hot than even that. The piece of fried thigh was noticeable smaller than the East Nasty, and as with the East Nasty, the breading was soggy and mushy thanks to being covered by a combination of the hot sauce, honey, and some whole grain mustard. The quick pickled cucumbers on top seemed to be homemade, which was a nice touch. The biscuit again was excellent and the best part of the dish.
Biscuit Love has excellent biscuits, but the good food seems to end there. I don't recommend getting anything but the biscuits here.
