Tenderloin Feces Fight Pits Fast-Food Chain Against Southern-Style Restaurant - Eater SF

"Since 1995, Biscuits and Blues has served up home-style Southern cooking, stiff drinks, and live jazz and blues from its spot at Mason and Geary Streets, making it one of the last blues bars standing in the city. That all came to an end when a pipe ferrying sewage (of the worst possible kind) from a next door Jack in the Box burst last April, closing the spot to clean up the filth left behind. Since then, the family-owned small business has been engaged in a battle with the chain, which says that it isn’t responsible for the mess its waste left behind. According to American Blues Scene, operations at Biscuits and Blues have been interrupted for years by leaks in its ceiling — drips from a pipe from a neighboring Jack in the Box franchise owned by Saeed Khan. The leak didn’t harm Jack in the Box’s operations, and the restaurant has remained open — with a 24-hour schedule, in fact — since the befouling incident. Biscuits and Blues wasn’t so lucky, however: As the pipes have continued leaking, the club has remained closed. Even worse, owner Steven Suen tells the Chron, when workers tried to clean up the mess inside Biscuits and Blues’s ceiling, they discovered that the longstanding leaks had caused the area around the pipes to mold. That’s why, to push for some sort of resolution, Suen took Khan and Jack to court last July, asking for an injunction that would shut Jack in the Box down until the repairs were made." - Eve Batey

Consistently great performers in a consistently great environment. Love the venue, love the food and have seen more great shows here than I can keep track of. It was closed for years but B&B is back and as great as ever. This show was Chris Duarte, one of our favorites. Loved it and looking forward to our next visit soon!

Me and my boyfriend saw this place while walking down the street and decided to give it a try. We didn’t know we needed a reservation but we were welcomed in just in time to eat before the show. The food was amazing and the vibes were immaculate, the staff were really nice and my boyfriend absolutely loved the jambalaya and the biscuits. We will definitely come back again if we get the chance. It was truly an experience. I wish we were able to stay a bit longer but we had other places we wanted to hit that day

Google
Good food. Great atmosphere. Great live music. HOWEVER - Be aware of the time you arrive and when shows start. This was our first time as we just walked by, read the menu and decided it sounded fun! At the host desk we were asked if we had a reservation- we did not, so they said they’d “have to ask the manager if any tables were free” after some recon sounding calls on their phones, they responded “They said we can seat you.” We also were not aware that it was $45 per person for the music in addition to dinner but ok. We paid $90 to get in. What THEY FAILED TO TELL US AND COULD HAVE was that there was less than 30 min of music remaining. When the act was over and most patrons were leaving, we asked if there was a second act. Our server told us yes, but that we’d have to pay for another show. When we asked why we were charged full price for 20 min of a show, she offered us a discount of $30 each. Geez. The show didn’t start for another hour after the first one ended, so we declined. We let the hosts know that it was really poor service to act like it was some big favor that we were allowed in and to take our money for 20 min of music remaining. They apologized and said we could stay but we were pretty off put about the whole sleazy feeling thing. So if you go - just make sure you are aware of show start and end time first. It would have been worth it had we seen whole show. In house staff were attentive and food was good. I’d have given 5 stars for service if it was based on in house staff alone. For its proximity to Union Square, the food and drink prices are a value. I hope I can save someone else from experiencing what we did with paying full price for the tail end of a show.

Google
We were SO EXCITED to be able to revive our annual tradition for celebrating the New Year at Biscuits and Blues! We had an amazing time and Steve (the owner) was hands on to welcome us back. The entertainment was great, the food was delicious, and we all had a great time!

Google
We're so happy that they're open again. We recently saw Lydia Pense & Cold Blood and we had a great time. We had dinner here, which was really good! We had biscuits, creole jambalaya, shrimp & grits plus some wine. We met Tina, who we talked to before and after the show, and she was extremely nice. We'll be back!

Google
This is a great venue for listening to music! Super cool and comfortable vibe. All the seats are for great viewing. Good acoustics and awesome bands! Glad we found this gem. Walking distance from Bart so super easy to get to!

Google
The music was live but the food wasn't. Being that the establishment is called "Biscuits and Blues" one thing I expected to at least good was the biscuits! They came to the table cold and hard. The other menu items we had were "meh". No knocks to the business but its attempt to give a Southern persona failed, of course this my opinion and if you've never been to the South you'd probably disagree with me.

Google
I was lucky enough to catch the opening week of biscuits and blues. Finally it’s back after being closed for a few years and it’s as good as ever. Sugar Ray Rayford was playing the evening I was there. Fantastic high energy performance, great band and music. The food quality appears to be very good and prices are reasonable for the Union Square area. I had the Caesar salad and the fried chicken, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed and the biscuits were absolutely fantastic. Service was efficient even though they were working out some opening kinks. I think they’ve kept the show prices as reasonable as they can. So glad to see the venue up and running. Best of luck to them for future success!

Yelp
This is a very intimate venue for top performers. Great menu too. Easy parking. Don't miss it !

Yelp
We used to go to B&Bs quite often before they closed. We went last night. I am wondering if they were having staffing issues. We got there 40 minutes early, ordered a drink as soon as we got there. Took over 30 minutes, looked like the bartender could have used some help. There were 4 of us for dinner. It took about 45 min to get 2 Caesar salads for dinner . I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken. I had 3 small pieces of chicken. The pulled pork sandwich and fried chicken for the other 2 people came about 20 minutes later. It's a great venue with good music. I will definitely try it again.

Yelp
Biscuits and Blues is the best! Great music, tasty food, attentive staff and distinct drinks! Love this place! Can't wait for the B&B Fan Club! I want the t-shirt, decoder ring and commemorative mugs.

Yelp
Great venue for jazz/blues. Stopped in for a Lavay Smith show. The band was top notch. Had appetizers, drinks and dinner plates (southern fried chicken and pepper brisket). Excellent faire. Andrew was our server, very efficient and nice. So glad live music is back at B&B.
google avatar

Luke S.

Yelp
Decent prices, small , quaint and no matter what it's like you're part of the show because of how close the stage is . The earl Thomas show was great . The sound quality was excellent.
google avatar

Cheska F.

Yelp
The service is not that great and I believes it's due to the lack of staffing. Food took forever to come out, we ordered at the begging and my sister didn't get her plate until 10min before the show was over. The drinks were horrible we ordered margaritas and a lemon drop. They tasted like lime juice, no alcohol. However the blues show was pretty good. That's why I gave the extra star.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
The entertainment was great! They all knew our names and wanted to take pictures with us. Great food too!

Yelp
I was expecting very little entertainment venue inside the basement club with $40 cover charge for Blues band. But, when we sat down to sparsely attended club at the far corner of the big basement restaurant and bar, we were pleasantly surprised by the professional Blues Band with above average performance by the singer, lead guitarist, bassist and drummer as well as the conductor/pianist. The initial drinks were watered down and weak but the second set of cocktails were totally different from the first. We were all blown away by the concert and the proficiency of the musicians overall. The sweet potato and garlic toasted asparagus and their famous biscuits with honey butter spread were all decent. I have to say that the band was pretty good. They played nonstop for two hours. The lady was truly amazing blues singer who also sang some of her original songs that were very good. Nice gem. I hope that they will have more audiences in the future.

Yelp
We are SF locals, but this was our first time here. Speakeasy vibe. We really enjoyed this place. Ryan was our host. He was always checking on us. Entertainment was great. Loved the music. Food was delicious. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
food over priced catfish nuggets was catfish strips southern cuisine food it was not they need to reomove that from the name 2 drinks the pulled pork sandwich looked like a kids sandwich

Yelp
Food was decent. Service was great. And can't beat having dinner with great live music. The venue was setup well, but I must say the crowd was a bit dull. With blues and jazz, I expected more energy in the room. Music was great even. Not sure what held the room down. It was empty enough that a few tables could have moved to the side tonight spire dancing. That might have helped. Will definitely return even still.

Yelp
This place has killer sound and decent food and drinks too. We went on a Saturday, so entry was pricey at $35 but it was quite empty - Maybe a lower entry would bring in more people. The music was f'n amazing and had one of the best live guitarists (Chris Tofield) I've heard play at a local pub.

Yelp
I'm so happy Biscuits & Blues has reopened! We saw Earl Thomas last night, and the service was excellent. Food was good (Biscuits used to be better). I'm glad they kept the vibe they had from the past.

Yelp
After having been closed for several years, I was over the moon to hear that Biscuits and Blues was open again. On top of that, one of my favorite performers was on stage for my birthday weekend, Earl Thomas! And, with this being a big birthday event (my 50th), the stars were aligned for the perfect way to celebrate this special occasion! As I remember, the food and drinks were great! Between the whole table, we ordered almost every single appetizer and kept the drinks flowing! Shout out to the great staff who kept running back and forth to our table with food and drink. And Earl Thomas always puts on a great show! Last night was such a good time! If you're looking for an old-fashioned blues club that's down in a dark basement, then Biscuits & Blues is the spot! I recommend this place to everyone I talk to about things to do in San Francisco. If you're looking for something fun to do, definitely check out this blues club in the City.

Yelp
Wow! I have to make this place a once a month visit. Had a blast! There was a Korean band the night we went and they were insanely talented. We enjoyed the music and the whole vibe of the place was great. What a great place for an amazing evening.

Yelp
I'm so glad they are back! Biscuits and Blues always have the best acts! I have seen some of the best live shows of life in this club! The staff are very accommodating, and the hospitality is top-notch!

Yelp
I was so happy to know this place reopened!! I remembered how amazing the food was and of course the music!! We just attended 7/20. The band was legit fire!! The food was unfortunately, terrible. The biscuits had a bad aftertaste and the texture was off. The honey butter didn't taste well either. The shrimp & grits were undercooked and didn't taste well. And the shrimp appetizer they gave were so tiny for 12 for $30! The kitchen needs to care about the quality of food they are putting out! Ryan the server was very nice
google avatar

Patti D.

Yelp
We were thrilled with the venue being reopened and it looking so nice,The food was excellent, cocktails, wine, biscuits to die for,shrimp/ grits jumbalaya and key lime pie..Saw our beloved coldblood.lydia pense and they were great Will be back.Nice to meet Tina as well..

Yelp
I am so glad to have such a great blues club back in action! Best damn basement club I've been to in recent years! Dark and sultry. Almost a speakeasy vibe. Saw Shane Dwight last night and everything and everyone was/were fantastic! Staff is SUPER nice, food was great, and the cocktails were extremely well done! Thank you all!!!

Mike K.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, food and music with friendly service - and the most consistent choice in SF to see nationally known Blues artists up close.

Yelp
Went to see Lydia Pense and Cold Blood on December 13th, 9pm show. 5 stars for the attentive and personable service, 5 stars for the only food we ordered, the key lime pie, 5 stars for the back-up band and singer, who were amazingly professional and put on such a great show in their own right. The cocktails could use an upgrade in the quality of ingredients. Fresh lime juice, for example, instead of a pre-packaged "sour mix" would take some of the cocktails up several levels. Having said that, it's incredibly rare to find great cocktails at a music venue, so one's expectations should probably be adjusted accordingly. It kills me to have to say this, and this has nothing to do with the venue or the back-up band and singer, but something was really off about Lydia during this performance. I'm a huge, long-time fan, have all of Lydia and Cold Blood's albums and have seen her tear down the house with incredible performances, but something was definitely off with her on this date. She seemed to be continually forgetting the words to her songs, leaving the stage and seemed to be disoriented and in some kind of pain. Anybody know what was up with her? Kudos to the rest of the band for doing their best to put on a great show under the circumstances. They are truly a talented bunch. First time at Biscuits and Blues. Really enjoyed the venue. We'll definitely be back for another show!

Yelp
Initially I was disappointed in the limited food menus and almost passed this place by... until I realized they had life music! The food was alright, but the drinks were on point, the entertainment was AMAZING, and the staff was attentive. Who knew that I could find a jazz/blues club in downtown San Francisco!!!

Patricia F.

Yelp
I missed this place so much and was so happy to finally revisit! There is nothing like dining while enjoying live music. The welcoming hosts and atmosphere, homemade food, happy service and talented musicians together provided another memorable evening in beautiful San Francisco! Thank you, Biscuits and Blues!

Jill R.

Yelp
A little pricey but the food was good and the entertainment was very fun. The fried chicken was tasty and the biscuits were fluffy and good and the mac n cheese balls were chefs kiss!!

Steve T.

Yelp
Great time there tonight. Great music by Earl Thomas and the food was really good. Friendly people everywhere. Great place.

Amy R.

Yelp
I have heard so much good music here and the food is very good too. The ambiance is intimate and great for a date or a group of friends . I can't believe the wonderful performers they got. We're very lucky to have B&B in San Francisco. Try to catch Earl Thomas there.

Jared F.

Yelp
Great music and a great vibe to the place. Solid food and cocktails. Will definitely be back!

Gregory Smith ..

Yelp
Have not been there since pre-Covid but definitely plan on returning since they have now reopened!

Yelp
I had noticed this venue on Goldstar. They have discounted tickets on Goldstar, so I paid $13 or something. I decided to treat myself to sweet potato fries. I was there for like an hour before I decided to leave early. The band was non-descript American music that I might find in a venue in Texas or Florida...something random and flavorless. But I wanted to visit this venue. It's just that I would rather spend $15 at the Chapel on Valencia for indie rock. It's nice and the service is good. Whatever you see fitting your lifestyle. Review #1700!! Review #950 in SF!

Yelp
For me, this experience starts as soon as I am walking up to the club on the bustling streets. I enjoy seeing all the people hurrying by. When I walk in I like taking the stairs down to the basement club it adds to the feeling that I am in a different world: a speakeasy, a southern juke joint, a big city club, or a step back in time, a step in the future or maybe a bit of all these, and I like the experience Inside the tables are close, but you can't hear the next table because the music is loud. You might not be able to hear the people sitting at the table with you. On our last visit, we ordered the fried green tomatoes. They were so well prepared I could have eaten two orders. They have some great shows, and I always enjoy the experience. The corporate business next door has flooded the club. I do hope they can resolve this so I can continue to enjoy this venue.
google avatar

Deb A.

Yelp
Pro's: Southern food and BLUES!!!! Con's: Hmmmm....maybe that there are 2 shows and you have to leave when you may not be ready. Go back?: For sure! A couple of blocks off Union Square, walkable if you are staying in the area, down a staircase to a basement bar, feels city-seedy and exciting at the same time. Dark, cozy bar with stage...the mood is set and I am ready to eat and hear some BLUES! I had the fried green tomatoes...yum...so hard to find in these parts. Entree was the fried chicken...oh yeah. LOVED the band that night..."Rockin' Johnny" from Chicago. Just a great time. They have 2 shows a night on the weekend. If you go to the early show, you may need to leave so they can get ready for the second show, before you are ready to leave. They certainly leave you wanting more. Dig this place...definately will go back.

Yelp
This place is exactly what I dreamed a blues and jazz lounge would be. It had dim lighting, with vibrant reds and blues lighting the stage. The tables and booths were spaced out enough so that you don't feel claustrophobic, yet close enough so that you still feel a little bit of intimacy. The lounge is broken up into three sections. The first section is the lounge type I think people normally envision when they think of a jazz lounge: Black tables, black chairs, and candles. It offers a relaxing seat where you can enjoy your drink and become fully immersed in the show. The second section, which I sat in, is made up of a row of booths. Here you can watch the show, but it's also ideal for those who are enjoying a meal with the show. The booths were comfortable, and they still offer an excellent view of the stage. The last section is for large groups of people who are dining in. This section is off to the side of the lounge, but seeing as the whole area isn't too large, it still offers a great view of the stage. The dinner prices are a bit expensive, so if you're on a budget I would recommend ordering multiple appetizers. About two or three appetizers could add up to the price of one entrée. I tried the biscuits, the catfish nuggets, the shrimp croquettes, and the fried green tomatoes. I was expecting the food to be better. The biscuits were big, and they looked fluffy; however, they were actually quite dense, and without the honey butter there they would not be worth ordering. The shrimp croquettes and the fried green tomatoes tasted good, but I have had better elsewhere. Even though the other food was mediocre, the catfish nuggets were awesome. They were deep fried (like ¾ of the rest of the meal), but I could really taste the catfish. It wasn't masked by the batter, and it tasted great. The show was amazing. It lasted about an hour and a half or so, with no intermission. The singer was happy to mingle with the fans after the show, which is always appreciative. The staff weren't friendly per se, but they were efficient. They took the orders and brought the food in a very timely manner, but it was also apparent that they weren't happy. The woman at the front desk upstairs also did not seem happy, and she loved to yell at everyone. I did like the fact that the lounge takes place downstairs. It gives a sense of privacy from the outside world. Overall it was an amazing show from the band, and a mediocre one from the food.

Yelp
Always stop here when in SF but sadly they are closed and it appears infinitely due to a flood cause by another business next door.

Yelp
BnB, offers some of the best blues in the Bay Area. The Hammond B-3 is amazing, especially when played by Stevie Utstien of Cafe R and B. The food is good and the service is so so. We always take new friends to this venue to share the blues experience with our circles. Tip for newcomers: arrive as early as possible for shows to get good seats and service. Trying to enjoy a meal after the show starts is always a challenge here. Hardcore fans who like to travel can also enjoy a great show at Harvelle's in Santa Monica. Thanks to Roach, Byl, Bobby, Donnie and especially you Stevie for another phenomenal performance!!
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
This is a great venue for music. We have been here for two shows. Both were excellent. The club is intimate. There is enough space between the tables for private conversations. The food is good. We have enjoyed the crab and corn fritters which come 5 to an order. Between 3 of us, we have tried the ribs, meat loaf, skillet shrimp, shrimp and grits and peppered beef brisket all was tasty. The service was good, keeping our water filled. This is a great place for a fun night out.

Yelp
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. This place offers two of his favorite things: live blues music and southern food. We arrived on time for our reservation and pretty much had pick of the house on where to sit. I was wearing a rather large jacket and unfortunately they don't offer coat check. We sat at a booth and had to lay the jacket next to myself where it was creeping onto our neighbors seating area. The food was great! We enjoyed jambalaya, fried chicken, shrimp and corn fritters, calamari, and biscuits. We saw Guy King, he was a great musician and performer. I am looking forward to another visit.

Yelp
This establishment condones RACISTS to eat, drink, and control the atmosphere! I came for my partner's 35TH birthday party and was accosted by a white woman claiming my party of 4 was to loud for her to enjoy the environment. After her claims I approached her regarding her CLEAR IMPLICIT BIAS and was both touched by her inappropriately and asked to be brought to the manager of the establishment who also, seemingly, did not not understand the bias and stereotyping at play. After addressing my issues with the manager we were watched for the remainder of the evening, while the woman complaining for NO REASON sat, moved aside, happy and okay with her CLEARLY RACIST ACTIONS UNADRESSED Keep in mind our bill was over $400 for what?!? We were watched for the remainder of the evening while the manager did not address our attacker's Racial discrimination, but rather showed clear favoritism for the white woman complaining, as we were watched the remainder of the evening with her sitting SIMPLY HAPPY ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE SEATING AREA

Yelp
After many years of wanting to come to Biscuits & Blues, I finally had the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands, Cafe R&B, during my travels. My friend and I loved the venue, ambiance, drinks and food. We shared the Creole Jambalaya and Peppered Beef Brisket. Both dishes were amazing and large portions, we could have easily shared one dish. I have seen Cafe R & B perform in many venues but this was by far my favorite and as always they put on an amazing show. We will be back!

Lyndon G.

Yelp
I went here to see Cedric Burnside and had a great time. It's a cool venue. There's a very intimate feeling with the band. The lighting and sound were simple and well done. I didn't get any food, so I can't speak as to how it tastes. I did drink beer. Not a large selection of beers but they had a decent ipa on draft and that was good enough for me. It was moderately priced (~$8 for the ipa). I definitely recommend the place - especially if you love some blues music like me! Looking forward to the next show I see over there!

Yelp
GREAT TIME ! My wife and I came here when we were visiting San Francisco. Being a blues fan I was hoping to catch some good stuff while we were in town. We had dinner with my wife's son and his girl while we sat back and enjoyed Nitecry play some funky blues. It was a fun time !

Yelp
So this was my first time visiting this venue. I searched for local live music for a birthday celebration and stumbled across this location. When we arrived we were warmly greeted, then checked in and were directed downstairs. Service: Once downstairs the hostesses greeted us and asked where we would like to be seated (which was a plus). We decided on the front near the stage and I'm glad we did. Our waitress (can't recall her name) was wonderful. Attentive, pleasant and had a great attitude. Food: We ordered the Jambalaya (highly recommended)and Salmon dinners, which were delicious. The Mississippi Tea (alcoholic beverage) is everything! Performance: Joe Louis Walker is a legend. He and the band played for over an hour and a half without any breaks. As a lover of blues the music truly fed my soul. Overall: I'm giving this experience 5 out of 5, due to the great service and extraordinary music. Thank you for making the birthday celebration memorable. Note: I saw some previous reviews stating that there is no where to dance at the venue, which is true, but as a consumer you might want check on that BEFORE going, and not ding the location for that. Do your due diligence when spending your time and money.

Yelp
What a great time we had here. The music was fenomenal, great service and good drinks. We definitely will return here, all the musicians are very talented. Nice spot to hang out.

Yelp
They do a nice job of keeping the blues alive in San Francisco, and it's always good to know you can see pretty good and, every so rare often, awesome bands here most every night. Sadly, management does everything it can to make the club as uncomfortable as possible. It's a blues club? And NO dancing area? That's a big problem. Most recently, they eliminated 7/8ths of the bar area so you have to get there real early to get one of the 4 remaining seats, which are off to the side. The overall atmosphere is stuck up and uptight, not what I look for in a blues joint. So, if you're a tourist staying in Union Square and want to hear some music and eat some pretty good food while staying completely rigid in your cramped seat, it's a good bet. But for a local like me, it's the last place on my list.
google avatar

Noelle L.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place! The club is underground which creates a really intimate feel. There isn't a bad seat in the house, but if you prefer booth seating get there early. There's also convenient parking next-door at the Mason St. Garage. Every show is a good show..you really can't go wrong! Come early for some awesome food (biscuits!!) and drinks, and stay for the amazing music. Great service and ticket prices too! Always good vibes and a wonderful time!

Yelp
So this was our second visit to this venue but it's been quite a while since the first. Got there on time for dinner reservation and got seated right away at a nice table close to the stage. The venue is much smaller than other clubs I've been to such as Yoshis or Feinstein's. Drinks were strong, service was really good throughout dinner and the show. Food wise had the shrimp fritters and the nachos both of which were really tasty. I didn't want to order a full blown dinner entree mostly because last time the gumbo wasn't very good so wanted to keep it simple. I would definitely return if there's a performance I'm interested in.

Yelp
Service was great. We came on a Sunday for the early show (7pm). We made reservations for 6 to have a few cocktails and appetizer and get a feel for the best place to sit. We were seated right away. Long islands were on point. Skillet shrimp with chopped garlic, green onions and chili's was very good, not too spicy but a good sauce with juicy plump shrimp (shell on, no heads). We ordered shrimp and grits and the fried chicken meal which came with decent KFC style coleslaw and mashed potatoes and gravy. The fried chicken was good despite not being marinated. The shrimp and grits as also good. There was a rich buttery sauce which looked like it would overwhelm the grits but it complemented the grits and infused with the shrimp. I would have liked a half cup more grits. Good overall tho. I had to have them bring us a fresh biscuit considering its in their name. Biscuit was good. Don't care for the sweet butter spread. Great experience. The live blues was a major plus. For sure will be back.

Yelp
My wife and I stumbled upon this place, looking for some good music in the City. Being our first time, we didn't know what to expect. We had a 6:30 reservations (show up early). We arrived right on time but there were a line of people and it did take us a bit to get past the cashier and seated. Kelly, our waitress was very welcoming and made us feel right at home. The food was on point and the service was good and friendly. The only complaint is that the drinks seemed to be light on alcohol. The band, Café R & B was fantastic...We will definitely come in when they're in town next. This is a great venue; very intimate and cozy. Next time we will make sure to get there by 6 so we can enjoy and complete dinner before the show starts or come to the late showing. I am very happy we found this place. We are already planning to come back to see Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. This is sure to become one of our favorite place for Music in the Bay Area.
