Bistro at The Boathouse

"Take in delightful Thames views through the floor-to-ceiling windows or from the lovely decked terrace complete with heated pods. Unfussy dishes are skilfully prepared and see the likes of soft shell crab rubbing shoulders with steak and chips." - Michelin Inspector

Restaurants with Amazing Outdoor Spaces in the MICHELIN Guide UK & Ireland

"This contemporary restaurant, with its floor to ceiling glass doors, lies in an enviable location right by the River Thames; sit on the delightful decked terrace with its heated pods and watch the boats go by. The young chef-owner, Shaun Dickens, offers carefully cooked unfussy dishes made with local ingredients." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

The bonanza breakfast was good and big but pricey. 2 breakfasts with tea came to £40. The featured sausage was ok, nothing special. The fried eggs were very good, as was the mushroom. The rest was fine. We had a table by the full length window overlooking the outside tables and the Thames. This is what pushes it up to 4 stars. The interior is nicely decorated.

We celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary and couldn’t have picked a better place for the experience that we wanted: fantastic food, lovely views of the river enjoying the weather and superb staff and service. They even surprised us with a celebratory dessert. The staff also went out of their way to accommodate us outside. We had a few staff members rotate through our meal and every single one was attentive and personable. Thank you for a wonderful memory!

The food was WOW! Especially the white creamy mussels, Oh my God, it was delicious! We were sitting on the terrace, enjoying the river view while sipping our rose. Friendly service. Will return here one day!

Boooooom! Service, food, location… 5 star all the way! Immediately after a lovely morning cruise, and the brain calories burnt along the way in speed using a knots system, then immediately off the boat and straight into this fabulous riverside restaurant that enables dine al fresco with a shade, to avoid getting burnt! The food was absolutely amazing and service was exceptionally warming and welcoming at the same time!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Bistro at The Boathouse in Henley-on-Thames. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a genuinely friendly atmosphere that set the tone for the rest of our visit. The staff were incredible — professional, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do. Everyone was attentive, thoughtful, and worked together seamlessly to ensure guests were well looked after. There was a real sense of teamwork, and it made the whole dining experience feel smooth, relaxed, and enjoyable. Service was not only friendly but also impressively efficient — our food arrived quickly, piping hot and presented well. Now to the food — the Sunday roast was faultless. All the dishes were perfectly cooked and well presented. You could tell a lot of care and skill had gone into every element. Even though the restaurant was busy (as you’d expect on a Sunday), the atmosphere remained calm and pleasant. The staff remained attentive throughout, topping up drinks, checking in at just the right moments, and making us feel completely at ease. It’s also worth saying how genuinely welcoming the place felt. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, solo or with a group, the team makes everyone feel like a valued guest. It’s a rare quality and made a big impression on us. In short, this was one of the best Sunday lunches we've had in a long time. Delicious food, fast and flawless service, and some of the friendliest staff you’ll ever meet. We left full, happy, and already planning our return visit. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a proper roast and outstanding hospitality. A brilliant spot in a lovely location — we’ll definitely be back soon!

A very nice place with lovely staff, we enjoyed the delicious food and cold drinks, we just couldn't finish the BBQ plate for two, and 2 plates of fish and chips, the fish and chips plate was to the expensive side and not the best I ever eaten

Years ago, we used to visit the Boathouse quite often. We'll always remember a fantastic New Year's Eve meal and party there. But when Shaun concluded that the fine dining business model wasn't working and moved to a bistro menu we stopped going. After a few years of not bothering to consider it as where we might eat in Henley, I checked their menu and found more than just gourmet burgers and decided to give it a go. Our Tartiflettes were excellent- Shaun is a first class chef. The place was busy, but the service was still attentive and efficient. We had their craft cider with the Tartiflette which worked well, though we didn't need the three thick pieces of bread. I think we'll be back.

Visited this restaurant yesterday for the first time for a Sunday afternoon roast - for myself, my OH and a friend. I could not fault this restaurant for anything! All of the wait staff were friendly, welcoming, polite and extremely accommodating. The food was exceptional - fresh, delicous and flavourful. Portion sizes are value for money. We also enjoyed an absolutely delectable dessert with after dinner drinks. We were not disappointed and don't think we could be dining here. I very rarely leave reviews for places but I felt this place is such a gem, a rarity nowadays that I simply had to. If you have yet to visit The Bistro at The Boathouse, you are missing out! Book yourself a table, you won't be disappointed.
