James Republic - Review - Long Beach - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"James Republic might be at the bottom of a Marriott, but don’t let that deter you. This bright restaurant is one of the most reliable brunch spots in downtown Long Beach, with a modern space that’s so big you can always count on getting a table quickly. Plus, there are flaat-screens everywhere, so it’s a solid spot to watch the game and bury your emotions in some mimosas. We get the shakshuka or the burger, and at least three sides of the habanero maple sausage for the table." - Brant Cox

A great spot that opens early for breakfast. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, food came out quick and tasted good.. overall a great experience. (Breakfast quesadilla)

Ambience: 10/10 Spacious, lots of seating, clean and very beautiful inside and out. Service: 9/10 It works very differently here and I’m not the hugest fan. You order from the bar and then sit down wherever you can find. Luckily for me it wasn’t busy at all on a Saturday and I found seating right away. The girl who helped me was very nice and recommended a few popular items. She also delivered my food very promptly (I was surprised how fast it came out). No one stops to check on you, it’s self serve with coffee and water. You have to keep reordering drinks if you want anything from the bar. So it’s not your sit down and enjoy your meal kind of restaurant. You order and then are left to fend for yourself kind of thing. It’s not awful, but not what I was expecting either. Food: 4/10 No flavor, none whatsoever. I had the breakfast sandwich which came with cubed potatoes. Salt and pepper added to the sandwhich didn’t help, the ketchup couldn’t save the stale/stiff fried potato cubes.. I would hate to rate this place based off one meal, but it was so bland. I ate the sandwich due to hunger but left the potatoes alone. Dennys has better food to be honest. Ambience and service were perfect, but the food was a huge miss. May try again in the far future. Also kind of crazy that they close at noon, most brunch locations are open until 2pm.

Place is dead on a Sunday. Host is kinda rude and why is it taking over 20 minutes for a grilled cheese? How does Denny's do better service than a bistro?

If your staying at the Marriott don’t waste your time trying to place a mobile order. After several attempts, the Marriott front desk said,”Whoops, sorry Mobile Order doesn’t work” I order a Quesadilla and Apple Cobbler in person and only waited about 10 minutes for my order. The staff were helpful and very friendly. The Chicken, Bacon (?) Quesadilla was good and filling. I may be a bad judge of the Apple Cobbler because I make a Mean Cobbler so to me it was just So So. I tasted a little burnt. Overall food was good. I took it to my room to eat but restaurant looks great!

Chef Jesus is the individual who skillfully crafted these three dishes. His dedication, passion, and love for his work are evident in the exceptional quality of the dishes. I commend him for his outstanding efforts and look forward to future culinary experiences at your establishment. Additionally, I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent service provided by Tito.

Google
Attached to the Courtyard Marriott, this is a solid choice for drinks and / or food, with a cheeseburger and two margaritas setting me back just over $40. There's a big screen inside that tends to show sports as well as a few outdoor tables.

Google
The food is amazing! I had the trout in a curry sauce... it was incredible!! Fresh and had a salmon like quality. For desert the Strawberry and Crumbs... it's insanely phenomenal!! The only reason I didn't do 5 stars...the service was off. Slow and well.... slow for the quality of food to me. If they fix the service issues... then a 5! Go for the menu...it's delicious!

Yelp
Average brunch here with a typical menu. Came with a reservation and service was timely. It had a casual atmosphere. 1. Benedict - Good portion and large. Tasty but not set above other benedicts. 2. Chicken and waffles - Also not the best I've had; chicken was not entirely crispy. Good flavor though. Overall good to try at least once!

Yelp
I knew this place as James Republic. I ate there once or twice. I was not a fan of the menu and the servers pressuring customers to order several entrees because "they are small." That was a huge turn off. After having moved out of state 3 years ago, I was so psyched to see the Bistro Bar in its place. Out of 5 days visiting, I ate there at least 4 times! The food was perfect and really delicious. The staff was amazing. They're friendly, patient and just really kind and nice; very accommodating. When James Republic was there they tried to dissuade me from eating there. It was completely empty. They said iI'd have to out in 45 minutes. I decided to stay and completely ignored their stupidity. As I thought the place was still mostly empty when I finished there. That was probably an hour and a half later. Bistro Bar is not at all as snotty as it's predecessor

Yelp
Stopped off here for a night cap and some dessert. Sunday evening which didn't seemed as crowded as I thought it would be. But people didn't trickle in throughout our visit. First off, service was slow. Short staff or just slow. There was one person at the bar and another that seemed to be working the floor. He seemed like the only one taking everyone's order. We didn't wanted to make things to complicated as there was few of us. Everything on one bill. Ordered a couple of drinks and a few of the dessert as well as a side of fries. Drinks did take a little while as it was only one person working the bar area. The sweets come out shortly afterwards. Service was nice from the waiter but it was slow. Side of fries was never brought out but did check to see if it was added to bill which wasn't. The place is quite nice, great vibe and part of the Marriott hotel I believe. Location, right in the heart of downtown Long Beach. A big ground is arrive after us but with the lack of staff, they were debating on wither of staying or leaving. As no one seemed to acknowledge their party. Took a while. Coming back, maybe for drinks.

Yelp
The seating and view is great. The server spoke about the "chef" and the kitchen can accomodate if you dont want cheese on your order... The "chef" is a microwave. The food is basically costco frozen meals and warmed and served. The $15 meatballs with arugula is 5 tiny pre-made frozen meatballs that are the size of a quarter. The salad is also just tossed and thrown in a bowl. No lemon or any additions. Just another hotel trying to be a restaurant and failing... but the beer is cold...

Yelp
Tito, our bartender, was so nice and amazing. If he is there, you'll have a great time. I promise you that. My girlfriend and I had a really great time, plus they had great music, and the drinks were tasty. Definitely ask a drink with lime juice in it, because they freshly squeeze it!!!!!!! And I promise you that it will be the best marg or lime based drink you'll ever have!

Yelp
"When the ketchup is out on the tables it's a hotel restaurant or a Denny's" I cannot remember who first said that to me but it apples here. Marriott has taken over the old James Republic but it is kind of sad to see the old girl slide into mediocrity. The menu is OK bordering on meh. Given its location and that excellent outdoor wraparound patio someone needs to take this on like a project. It should hop on a Friday or Saturday night and currently, it does not. I had a Caesar salad and a flatbread pizza And though there was assuredly nothing wrong with either, but both were lacking in imagination. Just a tiny tweak here and there would make it better than something you could make at home. Marriott is in the hotel and restaurant business. It's a sad Negligence on someone's part over there. Nobody asked me, but here is my two cents: Hire someone who gives a **** then let them loose. Oh...and let them provide ketchup on demand

Yelp
Thankyou Scott , great service & food. seven of us stopped by to watch the England v Denmark game. Scott kindly put the game on especially for us. The service he gave was excellen. Thankyou Scott.

Yelp
Always great service. I had the Caesar salad worth chicken and it was just perfect. My daughter had the burger and fries.

Yelp
Food: I got the bistro burger (medium rare) with fries. The burger was very tasty and cooked right. Asked for some ranch to match the fries. Fries were a little bland, needs more salt or some kind of seasoning. I ordered an old fashioned and it was done right (on a single cube) with an orange peel and black cherry. The blonde beer was decent. Service: The service was good. Bartender / waitress very attentive since I was sitting at the bar on a Tuesday night which was not slow but not full. They provided me with everything I needed. Ambiance: It's nice in there, easy entrance to find if you're staying the Marriott hotel. There was enough seating at the bar to watch the TV's and plenty of booth/ table seating all around. Overall, I would recommend checking this place out if you're staying at the hotel or looking for a bite to eat in the area.

Yelp
Take a little long but food is worth the waiting! The service is sweet. I was impressed one time when I went in they are about to close so I had to take out. By default I wrote down the tips when I was signing the receipt. The Latino girl who received me was very honest and did not take the tip. Impressed!

Yelp
The bistro (was james republic before the name change)! I was staying at the courtyard by marriott long beach downtown and found this place walking through the hotel. I decided on the short rib beef patty bistro burger and buffalo wings. For hotel food this is not bad! The median rare burger was cooked just right but not to much flavor but ok! You get skinny fries which were ok. The franks hot buffalo wings $14.00 were good with a nice kick of spicy with veggie sticks but these wings i could of made at home. The place is beautiful with nice prime outside/inside seating. You could grab a beer and just sit outside and people watch the whole day. The place is clean and the bartenders were very cool talking to them while i waited for my order. The bistro has plenty of TV's to watch sporting events and big enough tables to host a party of 20 or more guest. Most of the people go here for the bar drinks which is the busiest part of the restaurant.

Yelp
The set up was nice and clean but it looks like they only cater to hotel guests. Located at the Courtyard Marriott. After 48 minutes of waiting for a hamburger order that wasn't coming, we left. No one ever came to tell us anything about our order and some customers that arrived after us were served first (apparently hotel guests). There was only one person taking care of the bar and three tables at the same time.

Yelp
Excellent food fast service. Staff very friendly. It is my go to for eggs Benedict. The inside is an old school house. Outside tables.

Yelp
The old "James Republic" is now "Bistro Bar" Limited menu but Salmon was delicious !! Great Lemon Drop Martini's and vibe was relaxed. Heaters to keep you warm on the outdoor patio so you can "people watch " Ample parking , comfy seats and no wait Support the LBC and check it out .... Bartenders and Servers - FANTASTIC !!

Yelp
This is the old James Republic that we used to love. We stopped for breakfast and found it's the Bistro Bar, food and service was great. We were surprised to find our bill higher than expected, due to a service charge that was not disclosed on the menu or anywhere else. It needs to be disclosed.

Yelp
Friday night 7pm...lovely live musicians playing. Thought it would be the perfect vibe.... No one bothered to seat us. So we sat ourselves. The bar was busy but there was no sign of a waiter or waitress. I wandered around to a random table to grab a menu. We waited another 20min and no one helped us. Don't go here.
google avatar

Yelp
We walked in on a Sunday morning and I was surprised to see only one other person. After eating there, I figured out why. $14 for a 2-egg omelet. For that price it should be a 3-egg omelet. And no table service. You order food at the bar and they'll bring it to your table, and the quality of the breakfast was just OK. Want water to go with your breakfast? Get your lazy ass up and get it yourself!

Yelp
Food was terribly under seasoned. We ordered food to take up to our room. Utensil packs included no seasonings and not enough syrup for French toast. Orange juice tasted funny and they ran out of waffles. Not a good experience, take the 5 minutes to walk and get some decent food.

Yelp
I don't know if this establishment is new but no sense of customer service here. Came by this evening and it had a couple of tables taken. Was greeted and was able to sit at the bar. Bartender took someone else's order that came after us and told us they'll be with us soon. Never came back to help us out after 10 minutes.
google avatar

Yelp
Not great. First we couldn't even get into the place, the door was shut where there's both stairs and a ramp leading to what you think would be the opening, had to find our way in through the hotel entrance. Had to order at the bar instead of having someone to come and take your order. Ordered the bistro breakfast, came with no toast or bread for the eggs but oddly with a side of lettuce? Haha. Coffee was pretty poor as well, I felt the server behind the bar was potentially getting frustrated with my accent/not being able to understand me. My coffee order was wrong. Unfortunately there's a lot of great places in the area to go for breakfast so I probably won't be back to this one.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Super dead. Waited ten minutes and no one came to take our order or to even say they would be coming by. We got up and left for someplace that wants business.
google avatar

Shaun S.

Yelp
As a downtown local who lives around the corner, I can assure you that locals do not go here. If this bistro was not directly attached to the hotel, it would've went bankrupt years ago. There are approximately 8 eating establishments within three blocks of here. Why chose dull? Go to Long Beach Taco or Utopia across the street.

Steven S.

Yelp
Everyone looked confused and wondering where the actual items that are advertised on there online menue were..NOTHING HERE IS ANY GOOD.empty resteraunt reflects the quality and lack of professionalism at this place

Yelp
While staying at the Marriott we visited the Bistro Bar. There was live music and a welcoming vibe. Definitely a great place for a meal and dessert. The BLT was delicious and the fries are so tasty and perfectly seasoned, they are skinny, and fried to perfection. The half Caesar salad was the perfect size for a petite eater, and the apple cobbler with ice cream was fantastic! Also, loved the lemon drop drink. Service was quick, kind, and welcoming. Atmosphere was a bit loud, but nbd as it made a person feel happy being in a room filled with music, laughter and chatter.
google avatar

Ashlyn R.

Yelp
Went there for breakfast...the overpriced orange juice, despite coming straight out of a Kroger jug, tasted moldy. The food? Tasteless. Not a seasoning in sight. Portions were comically small for the price. Don't be fooled by the ambience and well plated food because that's all they have going for them. The second it enters your mouth all you feel is regret.
google avatar

Yelp
The burger and fries are DELICIOUS. I loved the open air seating, and the server was kind and accommodating to my 4 year old. There's no printed kids' menu, but they made her a plain cheese quesadilla that she said was "the best quesadilla ever!"

Sam S.

Yelp
My partner and I tried this place after the restaurant nearby was closed. At first, I enjoyed the ambience and the drinks. We both got the bees knees cocktail and it was delicious. The service was good at first as well, but they seemed to completely forget about us at the end. Normally, I wouldn't mind that, but when we wanted to pay our check and leave it was annoying. We ordered the brussel sprouts to share, and then I ordered the grilled cheese and my partner ordered the burger. The brussel sprouts were good. Unfortunately, both main dishes were cold when they arrived. My grilled cheese had clearly been sitting out for a while--the bread was hard and the cheese was not melted anymore. Also, the menu had said that the grilled cheese would use Texas toast, but the bread was just plain white bread. Could have easily been Wonderbread--definitely not Texas toast. My partner said that his burger was good, even though it was cold. We ate quickly, just wanting to leave at that point. Cue the struggled with getting the check. For what we paid for, it just wasn't worth it. We could have made better food at home.

Yelp
Amazing old fashioned drinks and a fun atmosphere. I come here often and love it every time

Yelp
Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I ordered Catch of Day. Super dry fish and literally no seasoning. Service was pretty slow. I would skip this stop moving forward.

M K.

Yelp
Trying to find a decent weekend breakfast in the East Village without waiting 20-30 minutes for a table is a difficult task, unless you choose Bistro Bar, (which isn't a name, but a description) because the food and service is so bad, the place in guaranteed to empty for you (with exception of a few first time hotel guests)...and you get to enjoy your poor quality and tasteless hotel food in what is probably the best location and space in all of downtown Long Beach. Get a clue guys, let someone else other than a massive corporate hotel chain manged your beautiful restaurant.

Tina L.

Yelp
The place was clean, good location. Service was slow, had to ask for silverware and napkins. The food was not great. Do not recommend

Lauren C.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant a few times during my stay in long beach. They were very short staffed, come with patience and kindness. For the short staffing, I felt the employees were all going above and beyond. The food was delightful and I enjoyed sitting outside. If you a person who struggles with patience, do not come here. But if you can understand it's hard to hire people right now, please try this place out! Jesse, the bartender makes a great espresso martini. Jason is a hard worker and works with ease and hard work. The kitchen staff was always putting their best food forward. When I am in Long Beach next, I will definitely be returning.

Jay F.

Yelp
Nice open air setting with great food and drinks. Had the hangar steak which was served with delicious potato croquette and veggies. Nice high quality dinner while watching the dodgers.

Paul H.

Yelp
Great burger and had a really good beer on draft. Also Katherine and Loris were awesome. The Brussels sprouts and salmon bowl are to die for as well. I'll be back!
