10 of Montreal’s Best Casual Japanese Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"One of the city’s oldest Japanese establishments, this homey downtown spot is closer to a casual eatery than an izakaya, although izakaya-style items are firmly on the menu. Regulars come for simple comfort food: donburi (rice bowls), sukiyaki, hot and cold udon, and more. On a rainy evening, with soft music playing in the background and a carafe of warm sake, there are few better places to be." - Tiffany Chan

The best and most authentic Japanese food in Montreal by far. I typically order multiple appetizers when I come here, as there is a wonderful variety. I recommend: - agedashi tofu (the standout menu item, better than any I was able to find in Japan) - spicy eggplant - korokke - grilled fish (especially if the yellowtail cheek is available) The katsudon is also very good, in large part due to the broth. The broth used here is consistently amazing. I've been coming to Furusato for over a decade and was devastated when they closed during covid. It's a blessing they've returned and I hope they'll be open forever.

I often went to Furusato when I lived in Montreal for three years, until this summer. They have amazing sushi with fish imported from Japan, plus hotpots and Japanese home style dishes. The karaage especially reminded me of my mom’s cooking! As a Japanese, Furusato is my best Japanese restaurant in Montreal. Hope I can visit and eat there again someday.

My favorite japanese restaurant in Montreal hands down. Staff are friendly and the fish is always fresh. 100% worth the price for its quality

Cozy restaurant with very good food and excellent service. Authentic Japanese taste; flavourful while not being overly salty. Sushi quality was good and served at the right temperature. Price was also reasonable for the quality/quantity.

They’re finally back!! My favorite little family owned Japanese sushi shop has finally re-opened after a 3 year wait! Always reserve for dinner. The sushi rolls here are huge and packed with so-fresh-it-melts-in-your-mouth fish. Try the scallop - nigiri, maki - it does not disappoint. They no longer have it on the menu, but for the crowd that use to come here and order the shiso-ume roll, you can still ask them to make it.

I was lucky to have discovered the old location when I did my undergrad at McGill over a decade ago. I was lucky again that I could have my birthday dinner there this past summer, and the food was exactly as good as I remembered, if not more so. I will go out of my way to eat here every time I visit.

This restaurant is the best. Even my pickiest friends love their meals and everyone leaves happy. Tonight, during the snowstorm, they were open and the staff were patient, kind, and helpful. We made a reservation for 8 people, which is actually a bit big considering they might have 25 seats in the entire restaurant. We were able to enjoy our food and didn't feel rushed at all. We left as soon as we had all finished since it was a busy night, out of consideration. I shared the vegetable korokke and shitake udon soup with a friend, and we shared the sashimi, sushi, nigiri platter for 2 with two other friends. I'm so glad that we went today because apparently they're closing next week and relocating. We are definitely going to be following their Facebook to find out more!

Clearly this place is one of my all time favorite restaurants in Montreal. I’m going mainly for the sashimi. Their scallops are amazing. I pre order the grilled yellowfin collar bone because I don’t see it on the menu anymore. But it’s the best! Give me that, the agedashi tofu, eggplant and a bowl of rice and I’m in heaven !

Yelp
I discovered this place by accident, was in the area and was craving sushi. This was my lucky day! The food is amazing and service is friendly. Best tempura ever! Love their scallop roll. Must try in Montréal.
