Where to Eat in Tucson, Arizona's Desert Jewel | Bon Appétit

"For years I stayed away from this restaurant because of the uninspired name—it’s a sushi restaurant on Oracle Road. Upon my first visit I realized how grave my mistake was..." - ByJackie Tran

Google
We love this place for their food and great service. Sophia was such a pleasure to have serve us and the prime rib was fantastic. I don’t say this often but it is better than mine.

One cannot go wrong with BJ’s and this was was no exception. Large setup, very well maintained, bright and well located. Food options are wide, something for everyone including vegetarians and vegans. We tried a wide variety of drinks and starters and all were good. The mains portion size was good and tasted well. Pizookie was fairly large and can be easily shared between two or may be three people. Service was quick, with the right level of friendliness and humour. Overall a good experience.

They changed the mini pizzas. Seemed dry, too crispy and they dont serve them in the skillets! Another try with sandwhich and tacos. Chicken blt came on burnt garlic toast! Taco was good.

If you ask for the prime and dare to enjoy anything over a medium rare, they will disrespect you by giving you an end piece while everyone enjoys a steak 2-3x your size. For a place offering prime for this price I guess it’s acceptable but it would have been nice to get a center cut piece that was medium well instead of the end piece. Now I feel like I got robbed. Was never asked if I wanted the end cut. Sides were ok as were all the soup options, great sides nothing wrong or special. Bad meat cutting practices, ruined my dinner. Food isn’t the problem, will be back again for the prime and drinks.

We're always impressed with this location. The staff is always friendly & helpful. This time, our server was Dominick. He was outstanding. We love his Christmas sweater & had. The food is always wonderful. #1 spot for us in Tucson.. Update 2023. Still #1 for us. Brittany served us twice now. Jose is a great manager, always walking around making sure everything & everyone is great! Tip: Join their Premier awards and get priority seating plus 10.00 credits toward food for every 100.00 you spend. If you follow us on our travels, you know the quality of food is everything for us & that we usually try to find more local unique places. BJ'S gives us that local feeling with their staff.

BJ never disappoints us — whether it’s their pizzas or desserts, everything hits the spot! pizookie is another favorite we keep going back for. But the real showstopper? Their desserts. Just look at that warm, gooey goodness topped with ice cream — absolute heaven. Every bite is a treat, and it’s the perfect way to end the meal. Definitely recommend this place!

Google
We had a great experience at BJ’s! The jambalaya was flavorful, with a nice mix of spices and plenty of shrimp, chicken and sausage. Their serving was so plentiful we split it and it was plenty! However, it was a bit on the oily side, which made it a little heavy. Other than that, everything was spot on—friendly service, a fun sports bar atmosphere, and a menu with lots of tempting options. We’ll definitely be back to try more dishes!

Our waitress was amazing. Understands dietary restrictions and how to relate it to menu choices. She was amazing the prices were high for lunch. Large TVs around the walls so you don't miss a moment of action.

Yelp
Chicken tenders were yum yums 10/10. I liked the style of the restaurant and the service was good. Getting dessert just got it it looks like a masterpiece. It was good :)

Yelp
Every time I go, I always get a messed up takeout order. Most likely will not return back to this location.

Yelp
The service is excellent and the food is way above average. It is a great choice for a family with disparate tastes. The skinny margarita is amazing.

Yelp
We went for dessert only and it still took about 45min for our dessert to arrive. Service was slow. Dessert was delicious, ordered the pizookie trio!

Yelp
My girlfriend keeps choosing to come here for lunch. I think I'm about finished. The food is average and nothing to really rave about. My flatbread was decent. Just needing more toppings. The Mediterranean bowl definitely needed more ingredients. It's like they prepare the base of the bowl and put on just enough to make it look like you're really getting something. I thought the bowl had quinoa, but rather it had rice with a smidgen of quinoa cooked in it. The bowl was topped with chunks of white chicken, but just a sprinkle of parsley, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, and a little bit of red onion. Just really not enough to fill up someone who's hungry. My girlfriend had the sourdough bowl. The soup was such that if I had been blindfolded, I never would've guessed it was tortilla chicken soup. The bread was delicious; the soup was bland. The atmosphere is nice. Just an overall meh.

Yelp
Great night out with Sam attending to our requests. He is above & beyond a "Server"! He knew what we both wanted from the bar even though I arrived early. I'd had a rough day. Sam was so cool @ reading we were gonna talk stuff out & then order entrees. No pressure, no rush @ continued to check on us. It was probably an hour of conversation and 2 drinks each before we ordered. Raven delivered our entrees. He is always great. Now I'm Happy, Seepy (2of the 7 Dwarfs) @ fat at home after another great night @ BJ's. Thanks Sam, Raven, and the kitchen team & bartenders that made it all come together. Gary & Rich. Luv BJ's team

Yelp
After a day of spending time in the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park, we stopped at BJ's Brewhouse for dinner. My wife had a Santa Fe salad with chicken and I had the shrimp scampi and sirloin steak combo with cheesy couscous. Both of our meals were excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and efficient. The restaurant had a very nice atmosphere.

Yelp
Went to BJ's with a group of friends and we had a great time! They had a variety of games on which gave it an elevated sports bar feel. The menu was so extensive that we all had a hard time deciding what to get but the shrimp tacos and pizookies were what I decided on and they were DELICIOUS! We will be going back here again!

Yelp
Re: Oracle Rd location. Service was nonexistent. My son and I were seated at a booth and never offered water or given a menu. The wait staff walked past us numerous times without acknowledging us. We moved to a table in the bar and the same thing happened. A visit from a manager was requested and even though she (the manager) stopped by, nothing happened. We left and as we were passing the hostess booth, we noticed the manager plus three waitstaff hanging out.

Yelp
My favorite bar to watch sports games especially during football season. They have amazing daily specials with half off pizza, burgers, or other dishes depending on the day. The pizookies (hot cookie with cold ice cream) is one of my absolute favorite desserts. Extensive beer library with local and international selections. Service is prompt especially Mario! Ambiance is lively and great for both families and friends.

Yelp
A very nice ambiance. Drinks were fine. Waitress was nice but made numerous errors. I ordered the special for Thursday, ribs and 2 sides. When I unwrapped my utensils, the forks had old food stuck to the tines-- disgusting! The waitress apologized and said she would bring me a new set. She did not. The ribs were good, but the cheddar mashed potatoes were room temperature and seemed old--I only ate a few bites. Not good! My other side was a wedge salad. It was Ok but drenched in Dressing--like double. Too much. I should have asked for it on the side. The special came with a pizzoki. A baked cookie with ices cream on the top. The idea was great, that is a great combo, but this cookie was doughy and oily. Yuck! The ice cream on top was great. I have been here before and had a much better experience. I hope this isn't the new norm.

Yelp
Made a reservation for 7 for a party of 4. Was told it would be an hour and a half wait. Absolutely insane that we made a reservation and showed up on time just to be told we must wait. Not to mention there were other people who walked in without a reservation at the same time and they were told it would be the same wait time. What is the point in making a reservation if it is not honored.

Yelp
Came in tonight for a late night bite and found reverse happy hour. We ordered drinks and waited until 9pm to order: calamari-seasoned well and delicious, no sauces needed. Potstickers we're also steamed good and tasty. I ordered California chicken flatbread for my entree-delicious too. Shareable pepperoni pizza and bacon cheeseburger very good. Tri-tip was medium ( not usually how we like it, but wasn't asked how we'd like it), shrimp was flavored n cooked well, broccoli was crisp ( not cooked well) and asparagus was seasoned perfectly. Ended with drinks to go and a $4 pooskie -chocolate chunk. I had ice cream and the boys had the cookie. 4drinks, 3- 1/2 priced appetizers, shareable pizza, burger, tri tip n pooskie=$135.62 before adjustment then new bill $113.11 Had to get Jasmine to change out ticket to reflect 1/2off appetizers-she stated that the bar n patio usually only areas for happy hour pricing. You specifically waited to take our order because we asked about HH and never said anything from above. Great service, food was delicious, came out presented well, temperature good. Atmosphere was quiet, tv's on -no sound. Not too busy 6-7 groups there upon arrival. Will be back, thanks for a nice meal. Used gift card n paid cash with tip for the rest of it.

Yelp
One of the best restaraunts I have had the pleasure of going to. They always give quakity customer service and GREAT food. The atmosphere is also a calm vibe which I like. Overall I would reccomened giving it a try for your special day

Yelp
Went to go for Valentine's Day with the kids and do the call ahead and when I show up with the family minutes still let in our window we come to find out that the call ahead did not work and now every other place is 1:30 wait including BJs. Ruined our family dinner and did nothing to offer help.
google avatar

Yelp
I mean this place needs to get it together. I loved BJ's when I lived in Texas. Went today cuz it's been a while and man it was a disaster. Longest wait ever for ordering and receiving food. My husband and I ordered 3 apps and 2 mains. I got my dinner we put in last, first while my husband just sat there. No apps or water or husbands food for a bit, just my plate lol then they said they were waiting cuz they were rewarming our queso.... Queso was cold lol then potstickers came ice cold... the waiters were awkward, the manager never came out to make things right. It was an overall not great experience. We'll give a different location a try, but never go back to this one. Super disappointing for over 100$ ticket...

Yelp
Absolute must on a Tuesday! A little bit more expensive than your average sports bar, but the food is a lot better and the environment is suggestive of something much more elegant. They have a massive menu that can accommodate just about anyone. Burgers and pizza look good and I most recently got the tri-tip and chicken and it they were both tasty and cooked perfectly. Pizookie Tuesdays offer amazing deals on the best dessert around!

Yelp
I want to write an update for Bj Brewhouse on Oracle Dr in Tucson. After my less than stellar visit i wrote a review & the business manager reached out to me, and invited me back to give the establishment a second chance i was hesitant, but I'm glad I went. The manager on shift was nice and i explained & showed him my invitation and he took care of me. Our waitress was awesome our tea was constantly filled, and our food was brought out in a timely manner. Thank you to the business manager who reached out to me i appreciate it, and that is why i am giving my updated review 5 stars. P.s it also looked as if the big pot hole in the parking lot was filled in.

Yelp
Very good Pizookies!!! We got the brownie, snickers and plain. Sierra J was a great waiter! Very kind and checked on us often.

Yelp
Waiter was nice. Food was eh. I had the chicken sandwich and it had no flavor. Breading fell off into crumbles. Looked like someone cut it open. Bread was tough. Wife had the soup and salad she said the salad was good lol. Will we go back? Probably but seems like the food and employee morale is better at the Broadway location.

Bob S.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch. Sat at the bar practically empty bar. Bartender kept asking me what I wanted to eat as he kept walking away from me. This occured several times. After the third time he admitted that he was busy. Really? Only 2 others were sitting at the bar. Seems kind of disrespectful if the Bartender/food server keeps walking away while they ask you what you want. Apparently having multi-tasking issues.

Yelp
Your bathrooms need some updating and repairs. You have bad soap dispensers and unclean granite that needs care, also broken toilet seat doors . All this is easy to fix and would restore the original looks of when it was redone. Last time I was there I had to report a no toilet paper issue.. Food depends on whose chef, up and down as far as meat quality whether calamari or prime dip or cheesesteak.. We have been coming to your location for 18 years.
google avatar

Yelp
Music entirely too loud at 4:30pm, sitting at the bar, and be bombarded by music from two different sources being played simultaneously...very annoying, probably won't be back...unable to enjoy a quiet, afternoon lunch...and I've been coming here for years...
google avatar

Yelp
One of our favorite spots to watch football and enjoy appetizers and drinks. There is a great happy hour which goes till 7PM and the ambience is sports bar meets family restaurant. We love the avocado egg rolls and pale ales here. Service is good, though food can sometimes take a bit longer on busier nights. Also, the meat for burgers and steaks tends to be underdone. For example, if you order medium it will be medium-rare. Order one step up from what you'd like. End with a pizookie!

Yelp
BJ's brewhouse is all about comfort food. If you are expecting top of the line meat of this kind or that, or a dining experience matching that of a four star place, you will be bummed. For the BJB, as I call it, it's a step above a Chili's and similar fare. Is it cheap? Heck, no. It is, though, in a challenge to find, if you are coming down Oracle and paying attention to Google for directions ( I don't recommend this). We went to BJB because I was craving deep dish pizza, and it is easy to get changes made without them charging you. Now, if you go to a BJB in So Cal, the extra fee awaits, it didn't here. We opened up with Sriracha dry rub boneless chicken wings. I've never done a dry rub with wings, but I was surprised how good it turned out to be. It was a crunchy batter, and all white meat on the inside. I chose both blue cheese and ranch. The main was deep dish pizza, the veggie one. I can't have dairy, so the cheese was removed. We kept the marinara and the pizza wasn't drowning in the sauce, which I'm glad. We wanted only half of the pie to have olives, but for that side and all of the pie to have the other veggies across the board. BJB failed on that by having olives and 95% of the rest of the veggies on one side. We just moved some over. Oh, I added pineapple, It was fine. We chose the medium one, which they refer to as shareable, six slices. It is enough, and you should have leftovers if it is just two of you. Service was good. Especially with the main server, but two things stuck out at this locale 1. When handing out the plates, the person who provided them to us, had their finger not on the edge, but more in on the plate. It wasn't our server, regardless. I'm fairly confident nobody would want to have a finger, with an unknown clean level in the eating area. 2. If you are expecting hand sanitizer at this place, forget it. Zero. None. Nowhere. Not at the front counter nor as you walk in. I've seen sanitizer at a gas station checkout lane, so what eating food isn't a reason to have one, post pandemic and ongoing COVID-19 and other uh, sickness things? Makes no sense. Food solid. It works. Do I need to get another deep dish pizza? Not really. After all, the last one I had was three years ago. So what's another three years from now?

Yelp
Food was fabulous. I'm a carnivore and had no problem ordering just what I was going eat without paying for extras that I wasn't going to eat! Ahi Poke was very good. Tri tip steak was excellent, yum! Terra was an excellent server. Very personable and accommodating. Atmosphere was enjoyable. Haven't been here with my husband in a long time. Did not have a good experience that time. After today's visit, we will definitely be back.

Beth W.

Yelp
I love this restaurant! The food is always good and the service is excellent. We go here frequently, there aren't many restaurants that have such a great variety of different types of food.

Yelp
Compared to the Bj's on Broadway there is a significant difference in quality of food and customer service. On this occasion I was close and decided to stop by with friends. We had a medium size.party of 8 and chise 2 seperate booths to speed up the service and not cause the staff to rearrange tables. I think they were short staffed because service took a little longer but not a huge issue. We only had a little over an hour for lunch and this visit was a little longer than that. The food wasn't great for me on this visit because the flavors were just off. A cold beer probably would have made everything better but it was a work lunch. I have been told that sometimes this location gives a discount to uniformed military/law enforcement and sometimes they don't. Not a deal breaker by any means but a nice courtesy when offered to public servants.

Yelp
Thursday night date and first time here. Large open space, lots of seating options - booths, bar, tables and high tops - and friendly service. We sat in the bar area and we able to see the game on any number of TVs in the space. Our server was prompt and helpful. Hubs had ribs with a side of tri tip; I had ahi tacos. Both meals were really good. Great portion of meat for him and really nice fresh fish for me. Even as an appetizer potion, the ahi - 4 tacos - was more than enough for me. The monkey bread pizookie was a delicious warm dessert served with ice cream. With drinks and dinner all in before tip was $62 - we both felt like it was a great value for what we had.

Yelp
This location has started to backslide again. We quit going a couple of years ago due to the overall food quality, but in the recent months found things were better. Until today. Ordered a tritip medium well and it was rare. They did offer to reheat it for me, but reheating meat just makes it rubbery. The baked potato was cold. So the butter didn't even melt. We got our pzookies to go and got home no strawberry puree for the strawberry shortcake pzookie and they were brown outside and doughy inside. While we did spend quite a bit at this location, that will stop.

Yelp
TERRIBLE! waited over an hour for drinks, just for everything to taste like straight up nail polish remover. i told the manager the drinks were nasty, and was automatically showed a gross attitude. he took our drinks away, and we thought that was that. we got our food 20 minutes after our drinks, and it wasn't super disappointing, it was definitely not worth over an hour, but wasn't disgusting. our server never checked on us, i had to wave her down multiple times since she forgot my to-go box 3 times. check comes, and i was charged for the nasty drinks i didn't drink, and AGAIN, server disappeared for around 20 more minutes. i waved down another manager who had no idea what was going on, since he said he had just got on the floor. i was PISSED. $30 on two mediocre hamburgers, and a disgusting lemonade i DID NOT DRINK! it just felt like a messy environment, and i would NOT recommend it to anyone!

Layla B.

Yelp
Food was okay but service was awful. We go there all the time and have never had a bad experience untjl today. Our sever Alyssa seemed annoyed the entire time and even rolled her eyes at us while we were sitting before we left. As a server myself, I don't understand this kind of behavior or how it's acceptable. Ruined my whole experience.
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
Fast & Friendly service! Great menu, descent selection of beers to choose from! I really enjoy the atmosphere.

Katie J.

Yelp
Horrible server. Not sure of her name but she was incredibly rude right off the bat. Rolling her eyes, ignoring our table. The food was decent but I would not eat here again after that horrible service.

Mike G.

Yelp
Food was plentiful and good. Service was excellent. Ambiance is as expected for a sports bar. I will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Six of us ate here tonight for my daughter's birthday and it was a mixed bag. Food was good - a burger, 2 Mahi-Mahi tacos, a chicken Parmesan and two pasta dishes followed by several pizookies (after a long wait). However it was let down by the service. The appetizer of Mac and cheese balls arrived after we were half way through the main course with a cursory apology for the late arrival. The server checked very irregularly, not all waters were supplied (although lettuce was in one of the ones that was) and we had to ask other waiters to find our server to pay the bill.
google avatar

Brad W.

Yelp
This new chicken dish was outstanding at $20 price point. It was great white meat chicken under a blanket of mushroom sauce. Served with cheddar mashed potatoes and great asparagus.

Taylor G.

Yelp
Just grub hubbed BJs to my dorm and they forgot my WHOLE PIZZZA. I was completely heart broken and devastated after a long hard day on my feet and finally being able to get my hands on a warm pizza. No only that, they gave my friends the COMPLETELY wrong wings and never got any ranch. I'm a freshman in college and I've learned to never go to this Bjs again. I can't wait to tell my friends to not either! Hope this helps!

Yelp
Tucson has such an amazing array of locally owned places to eat, it takes a lot for me to eat at a chain restaurant . BJ's fits that bill with good service and good food. One of the things I like about BJ's is they try new things on their menu, yet keep the solid selling favorites. I really enjoy the avocado egg rolls, and the Margherita flatbread. The Chicken Tortilla soup is pretty good too. They add corn and diced tomatoes , and that really adds a unique flavor. One of my MOST favorite items on the menu is their turmeric roasted cauliflower. Perfect flavor combination, and comes with lentils to make this non meat snack a complete protein. All in all a solid 4 stars.

Yelp
Service was great atmosphere was perfect for having a conversation I had the chicken Alfredo it was good needed more Alfredo sauce

Yelp
I called hours ago for a reservation and when I arrived the attendant said it was another 2 hour wait because it was a call ahead seating. When I spoke to someone over the phone I made sure to tell them it was a party of 14 and the person I spoke to over the phone assured me it was a reservation when I called. One star only cause I didn't have a chance to taste the food so I can't judge it. But over all service was terrible and girl in front was clueless and unhelpful.

Yelp
Doesn't seem to matter which BJ's you go to, they're all consistently good. Best thing about this place, Happy Hour goes until close on the weekends!! Another really cool thing is their $6 takeouts! After eating some food and paying some $$, you can order some of their chilled foods for later. I'm so glad I got their spaghetti on the way out. It completed the night. This BJ's was very big, but very empty. Granted, I went around 10 pm, but I was surprised to see about 5 tables occupied out of 50 (I'm guessing the total). The stranger part was how one waiter was welcoming and serving all the customers for the remainder of the night. Customer service was pretty slow, but I guess it's not a top priority there during Happy Hour. Honestly, the best priced items on the menu are the beers. I didn't take a photo of it, but I really enjoy their Jeremiah Red. Not very hoppy and tastes good. I could eat Crispy Chicken sandwiches any day of the week, so obviously I enjoyed that. Fries tasted funky like it was seasoned differently than it normally would be. Still, I was too hungry to care.

Yelp
ordered Monday night half price large pizza promo. received call from delivery driver that they were out of large pizzas, but would send us 2 shareable pizzas. at this point I asked since we were getting 2 pizzas rather than one could we get get two different pizzas. I was told no, as they were already made. If they knew they were out of large and were going to send us two pizzas we should have been contacted and given an option. we tried the chicken barbecue for the first time. we received two pizzas we wouldn't order again. Thanks Dan the mgr.

Yelp
So disappointed! I always order BJS with hardly any issues but this was upsetting. My burger was raw and got four pieces of lettuce for my wedge salad.

H B.

Yelp
just got the worst service of my life on the slowest pizookie night ive ever seen. hiring snails to do a job this easy is insane. seated for 15 mins, no menu, no water refill, messing up my order, and forgetting items? are you serious. if i get sat in this section with this waiter again, it would be faster for me to make the whole thing myself. over this. 11/5/2024 at 10pm bar seating.

Yelp
The front desk ladies were friendly as soon as they saw us walk in. It was Saturday evening around 4pm and it wasn't at all busy. We were a party of 5. We were seated right away in a table tucked away in the back. We were next to where the employees go and use the computer to place orders. This then turned out bad as my friend and I heard one of the employees cussing out loud several times.. Our server though came over right away and he was very friendly from the start. We placed our orders and our food came out rather quickly. We ordered: One 15 oz prime rib with mashed potatoes, asparagus, a chicken tortilla soup, and it also came with a pizookie. (All for $27) One bacon cheeseburger One grilled pork chop with a side salad and green beans. Our soup and the salad came out quickly. My chicken tortilla soup was too salty though and not at all hot. It was lukewarm which is a no for me when eating soup. I shared my prime rib and it was definitely enough for two people. The mashed potatoes needed flavor and so did the asparagus. I poured more then half of the salt out, ha kidding. But yeah it needed flavor. Our pizza cookie was delicious and perfectly done! I sampled a piece of the grilled pork chop my friend had, and wow was it great! I would definitely order next time! Service was great and the food was good. I would come back again when in the area.

Yelp
Mario is the key answer to amazing Bartenders! This guy will have a conversation with you about anything and everything when you sit at his bar top, he takes great care of his guests and is always positive never negative. The food never disappoints although a couple times they have been 86 the Avocado Egg Rolls but we will continue to go back in hopes that they have it but also in hopes that Mario continues to be our bartender. Thank you :)

Yelp
Arrived at 2pm. No one at the hostess stand. Waited 5 minutes in sweltering heat. The doors face south so they we're getting the full impact of the sun on a 104 degree day. Then I headed over to the bar area and asked a passing server if it was open seating in the bar. They said yes. Sat down and really noticed that it was just as hot there in the bar area. A server came by and I asked if there was a problem with the air conditioning. She said yes, that it was 100 inside the restaurant area but the kitchen was cooler. Why stay open in the middle of summer without functioning air conditioning?!?! I came to have the ribeye and several beers. Easily a $75 bill, but because of the high temperatures inside I told the server I was going elsewhere. BJ's loss. If they had good management they would have either closed or had someone at the front door apologizing and explaining the issues. Complete waste of my time drive 30 minutes to BJ's just to turn around and leave!

Kay N.

Yelp
The lunch started out with ice tea that tasted like it had turned and we were told it was just made. Then my brother asked for clam chowder and they were out. When my sister's order of Tri-tip came, it also was tasting a bit old/off. The service was also lacking in that we waited 20 minutes for pepper that 2 different servers were told to please get for the table for our salad. The entree came before the pepper. Needless to say, even though the manager came over, not much was done to compensate for our negative experience. The salmon was tasty as was the ahi salad, but the overall experience for a special birthday get together was overshadowed by the handling of the other problems. For the prices one would expect a better experience. I am a vip contributor on Open Table and there are too many better choice of restaurants to dine at for the same price.
