BKE Kombucha Brewers Work Overtime in NYC Hospitals Fighting Coronavirus And Try to Keep Their Business Alive | Eater NY

"Founded in 2018 by Saleena Subaiya and Lawrence Purpura, two doctors who used to work at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this Bushwick brewery has built a local following for its non-carbonated kombucha, sold at neighborhood restaurants, local grocery stores, and tasting events in the couple’s loft apartment. Before the COVID-19 shutdown it was producing 2,000 gallons at a time and was about to sign a deal to bring its product to roughly 300 stores across New York State, and its pear and chrysanthemum kombucha even landed a spot on the tasting menu at David Chang’s two-Michelin-starred Momofuku Ko. The shutdown forced their head brewer to leave, halted that major retail expansion and Momofuku Ko’s service, and left business diminished, but orders still trickled in, friends stepped up to handle citywide deliveries, and Bushwick bars listed the kombucha on delivery menus to help sales; the couple plans to return to BKE after the pandemic and offers next-day delivery through its online store." - Luke Fortney

I absolutely love this place! The kombucha is incredible — some of the best I’ve ever had. I highly recommend coming by and spending some time learning about the brewing process. Grab a flight to sample a variety of unique flavors, each one more delicious than the last. It’s a perfect spot to relax and unwind without alcohol. Christopher is fantastic — super friendly and welcoming. I’ll definitely be back for more. By far, the best kombucha I’ve tasted.

Such an amazing and welcoming atmosphere. The owners were such laid back chill people. They educated us on how they make their kombucha. Definitely made with passion. A must try! We left with kombucha to stock our fridge. Also they now are offering food and it was to die for. The pickled string beans and preserved lemons they used to cook our food with had flavor bombs of greatness. Cheers to Saleena and Lawrence!

Amazing Kombucha here! Crisp and clean flavors, and everything is done right. I recommend getting a flight to try all of their amazing rotating flavors. The ambiance makes you feel like you're at a wellness retreat. It's definitely a mood booster every time I visit. Christopher is friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. It is always a pleasure to see and chat with him.

Had a flight of kombucha which were great. The Mango Calamansi, Apple Cider, & Coconut were excellent while the Pumpkin was a little overwhelming but not bad. If one were looking for a place to drink without alcohol this would be good alternative to the usual breweries.

What a friendly place! My husband, a visiting friend and I stopped here on our way to a neighborhood errand yesterday. We meant for the stop to be just a quick “taste” of something healthy, because we were feeling a little bit shell shocked after a late Saturday night. In BKE, we found a restful, sunny, hospitable environment. Jackie - not sure of her title, but let’s call her the “resident expert” - kindly let us taste her favorites from the tap before we ordered. My favorites were a raspberry kombucha and a bright blue pea flower shot (!) and my husband loved his latte, a special creation of Jackie’s (pictured). We stayed a lot longer than we had meant to and left feeling happy - we will be back!

Came in on a sunday afternoon, had a variety of Kombucha flavours (loved all of them) and drank a very tasty chocolate. Nice place, almost european 😉 For me Kombucha is the best alternative to alcoholic drinks and sugar water. Hopefully this catches on! I had a good time, thank you! 😊

Lawrence and Saleena (The owners) were extremely sweet and the atmosphere was gorgeous in there. Not to mention, their kombucha is nop notch. We tried samples of everything on the menu, followed by a rose matcha beverage which was delicious. Then we had some canned kombuchas that were so tasty. I highly recommend this place. 10/10 Thank you again for your hospitality.

Super fantastic spot and alternative to a wine bar if you're feeling dry :) My partner and I did a flight of their kombucha tap drinks and cocktails -- and had a great time with the tasting. The drinks are creative and have a lot of nuance. We had exceptional service and a chance to chat with someone who was very passionate about kombucha. The seating is somewhat limited and tight, but we got lucky and had a private corner table. It's not the easiest place to find or get to, but highly recommend it! You can even take home bottles and cans of the flavors you enjoy. I personally will be trying to come back when the amaro cocktail is available.

This place is chill. If you ask for a description of kombucha you will receive many adjectives and a thorough explanation. Great back yard. Like downtown LA before gentrification. Very chill.

A small brewery in Brooklyn for all things kombucha! I am not a big kombucha drinker but really enjoyed learning more about how it's made and spending time with friends here for an afternoon. The bartender/employee was friendly, attentive and made us feel welcomed. I'd come back next time I am in BK!

@bkekombucha is a kombuchary in Bushwick and so glad we were able to visit their tasting room while we were exploring Brooklyn for the day. It was facinating learning about the founders' who are physician scientists. They have drawn on their expertise in health care, experimentation with adaptogens, and fermentation to create a really unique and even healthier kombucha! If you like kombucha, you need to try BKE! Its unlike any other kombucha we have tried. And if you don't like kombucha, you need to try BKE! Its light, floral, mildly sweet, and not sour like most commercial kombuchas. All their kombuchas have 0-2g of sugar, and between 7-15 calories.

Small Kombucha brewery in Brooklyn. They're open for walk-ins on the weekends. There are about eight seats at their bar and a small table for three in the back. We had the chance to speak with Christopher. He was super passionate about Kombucha and offered up some great recommendations. Couple other customers came through with one being passionate about kombucha too (came with five growlers). Certainly a kombucha hotspot. I tried a bunch of different kombuchas but drank the most of the green tea guava. Seems like the flavors rotate regularly. There was one gender neutral restroom. I hope to see their kombucha around more often!

This place is unbelievably amazing. Have been trying to find places where I can meet friends with no alcohol involved. Went to this place and it was way more awesome than I had imagined. They had floats where we could try different flavors and Christopher who served us was so passionate about their product. I've been drinking kombucha every day for about a decade. I always feel like I need to ration it as it has too much sugar in the shop bought varieties. But this stuff is super low in sugar and has seriously upped my kombucha game. You can take away cases. I've been back a bunch of times and done so. They even have a beautiful bottle that you can take to parties. This kombucha enabled me to have a sober Christmas, and it is much better than any of the other sober drinks on the market. I've been putting it in an wine glass instead of wine (it's fully alcohol free). So if you want a high quality, low sugar product that you can drink at home, or a night out with friends that doesn't involved alcohol, this is definitely your place.

Super cute tranquil spot to grab a glass of kombucha for here or to take a bottle (or crate) to go. I really liked the pear chrysanthemum. They were started by two doctors and use ingredients with legitimate health benefits.

BKE Kombucha is so good that it's ruined most other kombuchas for me. The flavors are interesting and complex, with significantly less sugar than the big brands, and there's no vinegar aftertaste. The tap room is beautiful, and the service is great - the team is really passionate about kombucha and will help you choose something you'll like from the (slightly overwhelming) selection. I've taken sober friends on two separate occasions, and they both enjoyed the experience of getting a flight at the bar. It's quite fun to have the craft bar experience with 'booch instead of booze!
