Yelp
I have been a semi-frequent patron of Black and Blue for the past ten years or so -- a go-to date spot when I'm in the Buffalo or Rochester area. Consistent, high-quality food, and great service.
My most recent reservation (Feb 2022) was more of a three-star than a four-star experience, but so as to not give into my recency bias, and to account for the many supply-chain/labor issues the industry is facing right now, four it is.
We were seated immediately upon arrival with a reservation for two. Noise level was moderate -- sitting near the kitchen makes you feel like you're part of the action, which I don't mind, but others might. The service was great.
The wagyu meatballs came first, an always-order for me. I was a bit displeased by this iteration. The meat was a bit overdone and the sauce lacked the umami blast I had come to expect . I had to take a bite of the (perfectly salted) pretzel dinner roll to make sure I hadn't lost my sense of taste. Okay, that might have been a bit dramatic, but in the age of Covid, you never know.
Next came the entrees. For me, the bistro steak (formerly filet) and some Alaskan king crab (you have to surf your turf, right?). For her, the truffle pappardelle.
The steak was perfectly cooked (rare) and seasoned. It came out on the same sizzling plate it was broiled on -- don't touch it. While the steak will continue to cook on your plate, I don't necessarily recommend ordering a cooler temperature. It maintained its red center from start to finish.
Our table was so tiny I elected to have the crab meat extracted for me. This turned out to be quite the mistake as they plate it on the sizzling steak tray in a metal dish. Overcooked crab isn't the same experience as perfectly cooked crab, but a dip into the house béarnaise gave the meat some of the moisture it lacked.
The pappardelle was superb. Great flavor and the plating was immaculate. Fair serving size as well. We also ordered the side of hash browns to share which really made up for that deep, savory, salty flavor I wanted out of those meatballs. They are superb and a great addition to a morning-after breakfast with a nice runny egg.
We ended the night on the lava cake. Perfectly sharable, but they might want to consider two scoops of the vanilla ice cream.
