Nice restaurant that just doesn't quite hit the bar it's trying to reach. Average cocktail, beer, and wine list. Nothing crazy here, for the price of this place, looking for something a bit more sophisticated than the local olive garden. Complete with free bread, pretzel rolls in this case, but any better or more elevated than bread sticks, not really.
I eventually settled on getting a glass of wine after finding the cocktails to really just be the standard classics. I got a red tuscan wine blend, oddly it was served cold, and really didn't taste any better than the $5 trader joes section.
Started off with the she crab soup, a staple in maryland I grew up eating. They were able to split it for two people if you're looking to share which is great. The flavor was delicious, but really should be labeled a crab bisque rather than she crab soup. There were absolutely no chunks of crab here, not one, where there should be lump blue crab here. There was just a sliver of crab on top and that was it.
I got the red snapper for my entree. The fish was a bit overcooked and rubbery around the edges. Also not really seasoned, very bland flavor. There was supposed to be some brown butter rosemary sauce, but I did not taste the brown butter or rosemary here, just a sauce that tasted more like blended up sweet potatoes. There was a sweet potato and blue crab hash underneath, but really the crab was just lost in the sauce and other flavors going on here. The sweet potato was nice though and cut uniformly.
We got a few sides to share for the table. The mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and hash browns. The mac and cheese was made with orzo and "three cheeses". I find it odd that they don't just mention what the three cheeses are, after tasting, I would say it's because the cheeses are nothing special, the whole thing tastes very bland, barely cheese. The orzo makes the whole thing taste more like a cheesy rice dish than mac and cheese.
The mashed potatoes were probably the best part, pretty good flavor, and a little character from the red potato skins. The hash browns are not what you'd think about traditionally from hash browns, they honestly look more like a chicken bake from costco. Decently crispy, under salted, stuffed with cheese? probably the same cheese from the mac and cheese, something bland and gooey. Not really what you'd expect, and not really that great.
The service was good, the waiter was attentive, though a bit awkward and lingered for a tad too long. Overall, the food is good, not great. For half the price, I'd be quite happy, but at this price point, the food really just didn't justify it.
