APR 2025: Delicious food, friendly staff and amazing devour! They serve breakfast all day, the country fried steak, breakfast meats, and hamburgers were so yummy. The staff was very patient and friendly even for a large group like us. The meals were reasonably priced and they had a lot of options for the kids meals. As for the decor, there were lots of black bears in paintings, wood carving, and etc., that the kids loved walking around and looking at. Definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a family dinner or brinner!

I came here on the fourth of july with my friend and despite the holiday (and how packed it was!), we got seated super fast. our server was Aschley and she was incredibly awesome!! she came around multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed, made some small talk with us, and overall was just a wonderful server. the food was awesome and very well priced. my french toast was perfectly soft and my hashbrowns wonderfully cooked. my only complaint would be about the fruit which wasn’t very fresh tasting, but that was a free addition with my meal so i don’t even mind. perfect diner for a delicious breakfast!!

This place was amazing and had large portions. Definitely would fill a hungry belly. Must see!!!!

Google
Love the atmosphere! The food wasn't anything to write home about but it was definitely a fun little place to get breakfast! Not that it was bad just about average! The pancakes are a little sweet but overall not too bad, go for the atmosphere! Update: went to thanksgiving and it was an awesome meal, if you are looking for a thanksgiving dinner where you don't have to cook this place has you covered! We went at 3 and didn't have to wait at all for a party of 4. Lot of food for 26.99! You will be full!

Google
The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was even better! Portions were generous, and everything we tried was perfectly cooked. The atmosphere is cozy and family-friendly—perfect for a casual meal with friends or loved ones. A big shoutout to Gustavo, who took care of us amazingly well. He was super friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
We walked in and it was disorganized - focusing on check outs and ignoring parties to be seated. Then seated and waited quite a while for our server… food came fairly quickly -and the gravy for the biscuit and gravy was cold. My fries were awesome and hot. Just not a great experience.

Google
Generous portions for reasonable prices. I was happy to find some options for lower calorie count, which can be hard when eating out. Group of 7 a 6.15pm on a Saturday night, but we were well taken car off by our attentive server. Highly recommend this for a family get together, especially because the atmosphere wasn't too loud to enjoy conversation.

Google
I ordered a lemonade that i never got. I also ordered a side salad that did not come but was charged for it. Once the food was sat down, we did not get checked on at all. We did not see our server to tell her that we didn't receive what we ordered. Definitely was not happy with the service from our server Danielle. It also took 10 minutes before someone greeted us and got us a table. We waited 15 minutes at the front desk waiting for someone so we could pay.

Yelp
Great diner. I've also gone to the one in Reno with my son anytime I go Everybody is so friendly and nice there plus the food is delicious. A very pleasant spot very comfortable even if you go to grab a quick bite. Ambience is very comfortable.

Yelp
First time ever trying this restaurant. I ordered the New York Steak dinner with the two sides included being onion rings and corn on the cob. You also receive a corn muffin and a side house salad. The steak comes in at 10 oz. I ordered mine well done, and once again, I received a medium cooked steak. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why so many cooks at restaurants do not know how to make a proper WELL DONE steak! The outside looked good. The inside was nothing but pink meat, some of which was too raw tasting to eat! On a positive note, it had good outside flavoring and was very fresh (not tough or too chewy). The corn muffin was absolutely fresh and delicious! It came with a small butter square but I didn't even need it; the muffin was THAT good! The corn on the cob was just a half cob, but also very fresh and cooked perfectly. I definitely could have used a full cob ;+) The onion rings were crispy and delicious. Perfect. Very disappointed that I requested condiments and received none. Not one single packet or small container of anything. So I had to use the one little cup of blue cheese dressing that I requested for the salad. The side house salad is a garden salad. Different types of lettuce used, a lot of shredded carrots, a few cherry tomatoes, and if you looked hard enough, maybe three miniscule pieces of red leaf cabbage. They do giving you a very decent size potion in it's own container but it was extremely dry. Like all the different lettuce leaves came from bagged lettuce. Definitely wasn't the freshest or tastiest. Was extremely disappointed they only included one small cup of blue cheese dressing as this salad definitely could have used at least two. Especially since no other dressings/condiments were included. I'm rating this restaurant a three strictly based on no condiments received though requested, and most importantly, my steak not being cooked well done. I absolutely cannot eat pink meat especially if it tastes raw. If all of the above didn't happen, I easily would have rated this visit a five. With that said, I do plan on visiting this establishment again but definitely will order something other than steak.

Yelp
Breakfast was amazing and service good. The restaurant is way too cold, so they do need to lower the air conditioning. But everything else is great!

Yelp
Took the wife and son to BBD on a Saturday late morning around 11:00am for brunch. Wait was about 30 minutes. Waitress was attentive and took our order. The food however took around 45 to come out of the kitchen. I had their cream cheese pancakes that were very good. My son had shrimp and ribs and really liked them. My wife had the eggs Benedict and thought they were just okay. She doesn't like her egg's runny and should have told them this as the yokes were very runny. The amount of food and value is there. So if you want a lot of food at a good price, give them a try.

Yelp
Horrible service! Cold food! Non caring managers and extremely RUDE servers. Difficult to get refills on coffee. At what restaurants are charging for coffee refills should be ongoing
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Probably my 4th or 5th time here. Completely new wait staff, I assume also new kitchen staff and management too. The store owner should dump them all, shut the place down for a month to hire and train an entirely new team. Took ridiculously long for our order to arrive. I ordered the breakfast chicken fried steak, I got something completely different. My wife and I were both supposed to get pancakes with our order, they never came. Coffee was barely warm and gross. Very disappointing.

Yelp
I have not eaten here in a while but the two times I did the food was good, the environment was peaceful, and the waitress was really sweet.
google avatar

Wendi M.

Yelp
Nope. I've eaten at many locations of Black Bear Diner, even out of state. It's gimmicky and the food is mediocre, overpriced, and bland. I guess they err on the side of flavorless for the older demographic that they cater to? There are so many places better than Black Bear. Go to Sill's Cafe across the street - the food is better and costs less.

Chester D.

Yelp
Our server Cindy was a delight. Her warmth and friendly demeanor added to our experience. She made great suggestions about the menu and made sure we were taken of.

Sharalyn M.

Yelp
Not very happy with black bear tonight. We had a party of 8 adults and a toddler. 3of us ordered pot roast. AFTER the waitress brought us our salads and cornbread, she told us they were out of pot roast. At that point, we felt we had to order a dinner because we had our salads. So we all ordered the tri tip. We ordered it rare, my niece ordered hers med, and my sil ordered his med rare. Well, it really didn't matter because when the plates came, they were all cooked the same. The tri tip had a wierd flavor. Then, to add to the disappointment, it was kids eat free night, but we still got charged for the toddler meal. It will be a long time before I eat here again.

Elisa S.

Yelp
We were there on graduation morning 5/22/25, staff was very friendly & accommodating. As we asked to be seated out on the patio. We had a group of 9 and not all of us arrived together. But at some point the restaurant got very busy, and service became very slow. Two orders had to be sent back. But all and all food was good and service ok. Maybe consider the time of year, to have additional staff on hand. Thank you!
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
I want to know.. why, if the little less dinners are touted as smaller full course homestyle meal, why, I was denied my salad and cornbread muffin? No where does it say 'for an additional cost' until you click on the item? Why would you be charging for soup or salad anyways when it clearly says starts with soup or salad and a muffin? Is this a bait and switch going on? Your employees were wrong when they tried to argue with me. They were even more wrong giving me an incomplete order.
google avatar

Yelp
Their food is amazing and hearty. Love the selection of choices! I love a good breakfast dinner so Black Bear Diner is the best hotspot for that!

Matt L.

Yelp
Great food, service and atmosphere. Waitress was prompt, friendly and polite. I would recommend this location.

Yelp
10/5/24 Just had dinner at Black Bear.At Layton Utah location. I can't believe how great the employees are. It's so nice to go to a restaurant where the service is friendly and good. The manager stop by the table and asked how everything was. I told him the service and food was great!!
google avatar

Gregory H.

Yelp
The food was excellent with the service being just a little slow for not having a full restaurant. This is a great go to place for family and celebrations or just a quick breakfast fix. I haven't found a better chicken fried steak dinner meal.
google avatar

Doug T.

Yelp
Way better than a Denny's.. a bit disappointing that they don't serve bear. I'm on one of those bs low carb no sugar diets and they were able to accommodate. Menu is pretty big so if you can't make up your mind you should probably go elsewhere
google avatar

Peggy C.

Yelp
Always enjoy the food, always have specials posted that are actually interesting and we're willing to try. The service is usually always nice. Every so often we have to wait (after getting several glances from the wait staff) before we're even greeted but once we are the service is good. With that being said, the food never disappoints;-) Also, this is the only place I order the orange juice because it's always fresh squeezed (the machine is visible) and you get a large glass of it! Delicious!!! ****Definitely get the Irish Corned beef Benedict! It's absolutely delicious. The corned beef is not from a can! It's fresh and shredded, the poached eggs were perfect with a runny yolk, perfect amount of sauce too. I was so excited to eat it that I forgot to get a picture of it lol. Trust me, get it.

Melissa S.

Yelp
A shout out to Danielle and staff at the Layton Black Bear Diner, for the fabulous Breakfast we had catered! I would highly recommend!

Yelp
Black bear does not offer enough health options. I have sodium restrictions and am also diabetic. I just wish they'd come up with food and desserts to accommodate better eating habits

Easton B.

Yelp
Black Bear Diner is obviously well known for their French toast and pancakes. These are their seasonal tropical tacos. They were alright. They would have been better with any other kind of meat. Chorizo or chicken or even steak. The Mexican seasoned ground beef just took away from the island feel. Even with the island salsa. But again they weren't bad and the pancakes were good. Our waiter was kind and friendly especially with the size of party we brought in. The ambiance is nice.

Bree H.

Yelp
Dani was great!! She was so nice and quick with everything! The food was cooked perfectly! I will definitely be back!!! Great place to eat!!!
google avatar

Kei C.

Yelp
Food was good, not great. This is a family place. Staff was attentive. I'm glad we have another breakfast place in town. It would be 5 stars, but paying for food that I can make at home, automatically loses a star.

Yelp
Holy cow, be sure to go when you're hungry!! Portions are the BEST here! Prices are decent and the environment is laid back. We sat talking with my sister for nearly 2 hours and our server came by at just the right intervals to fill our drinks. A "beary" good place :) The "big daddy burger" or "daddy burger" wasn't on the menu, our server suggested it to my husband who was going to get the biggest burger on the menu and WOW---that was one big burger! My husband NEVER gets boxes (he always finishes his food), but he only ate half the giant! quantity quality cleanliness of dining area cleanliness of restrooms (can only vouch for ladies') ONLY ITEM LESS THAN 5 STARS... their mild sausage patty isn't my favorite ;)

Yelp
Well, I gave this place a second chance. I regret it now. Bad experience on both occasions. I ordered the grizz again, sunny side up eggs and extra crispy hashbrowns. Hashbrowns came crispy on the top and white on the bottom, I asked my server Kacie if they could please make them crispy on the bottom also, she scoffed and said "that's as crispy as they get. " I replied back, "so you can't cook both sides of hashbrowns? I don't get it..". She angrily took away my plate and put it under the heat lamp. I waited for 10 minutes and she brought me the same plate except now my egg yolks are now not cooked how I ordered them due to the heat lamp cooking the yolk. She brought hashbrowns on a separate plate except now instead of it being one even flat piece of hashbrowns like the last time, they're in a pile. I asked why they didn't just put the same hashbrowns crispy side up and crisp the white bottom? I lifted the bottom of the hashbrowns and showed her they were still white. Asked why they didn't just leave the hashbrowns how they were and throw the white side onto the grill? She smirked at me and said "I told you that was as crispy as they could get them the first time". I politely asked her to remove them from my order and that I didn't want them anymore. She glared at me angrily and walked away. I ate the food and got up to pay. While paying for the food I told her that what she did was extremely rude and unprofessional. She purposely made me wait extra to spite me, and simply dumped the same hashbrowns into a pile on a plate and mixed them to make them look like they actually re-cooked them when they didn't. She laughed then gave a huge grin and abruptly looked down and couldn't make eye contact because she knew she had been caught in her spiteful deception. Will be contacting the Redding corporate office Monday and notifying them of this locations lack of standards. Two separate incidents with two different servers both acting rude and unprofessional, same low kitchen food quality, and never a manager present that walked over and asked if everything was okay. I've never had ANY problems with the food or service in any other black bear diners in the years I've been going to their other locations. 0/5 stars, never coming to this location again.

Yelp
It was a chilly Saturday morning when we got take out from Black Bear Diner and we were looking for a hearty breakfast. We ordered one of their sweet cream pancakes, the cinnamon roll french toast, and the chicken fried steak combo. Walking in to pick up our order, I saw that the decor was right on theme. It had a woodsy, lodge feel but it was complete with a juke box and lots of bear paraphernalia. The menus were designed to look like newspapers. In true diner style, the portions were large and there were calories galore! When I saw the size of the pancakes, I was glad that I'd only ordered a single one. It was very good - fluffy, soft, and a little sweet as the sweet cream suggested. The french toast was surprisingly excellent. I am always leery about getting french toast because I don't like the texture of soggy food but the cinnamon roll aspect of this one sounded good. The use of an actual cinnamon roll that was sliced, dipped in batter, and cooked allowed their french toast to remain firm. I enjoyed the icing on top which added a nice sweetness. We also enjoyed the chicken fried steak and gravy. This was a very heavy, but truly satisfying breakfast. I was disappointed to see that our fruit that should've accompanied the french toast was missing as that would've brightened up the meal. But, despite that, I would visit this location, or another one of the many Black Bear Diners again for a good breakfast.

Yelp
So last night Oct 26th 24 My grandma and I went and ate dinner And we were treated very rudely by the waitress My frys were cold like always And there was left over food on the floor at the table next 2 us Tonight was the first time my grandma And I were treated so poorly But I just thought I would put my experience on here
google avatar

Jocelyn H.

Yelp
They currently have cheese sandwiches for a limited time so I tried the breakfast sandwich minus the meat. The breakfast cheese sandwich was very good and next time I will try the all cheese sandwich. I like to visit during the week because it's never crowded like it is on the weekends but after trying the pancakes in the past, I needed to try something else because the pancakes are just too heavy. Not sure how long they will have the cheese sandwiches but my sandwich did taste as good as the photo looked.

Yelp
Just went to Black Bear today, Shaylee was our server. She was kind and attentive, we never went without drink refills or condiments . The food was great! Ordered their new Stacks "Double Bacon" talk about delish! Rivals big box restaurants.

Anna B.

Yelp
Typically I frequent at the location in Riverton. We've never had a bad experience there. The hostess didn't tell us who our waitress was, waitress did not introduce herself and she lacked any sort of care for our table because there was a larger group in. We got two coffees, after adding creamer to the coffees, there was some white chunks (actual chunks from the creamer) floating around in our coffee. I made a joke to my boyfriend that I should've started a timer from when I noticed the chunks til when the waitress circled back to the table. She forgot a straw for one of our waters and said she would be "right back" with the second straw for us so we assumed it shouldn't take long. We ended up waiting close to 15 minutes before I turned and saw the waitress and two others chit-chatting behind the hostess counter, waited another few minutes and decided to go up and let them know; got greeted with a "did you need something?". Got a new cup of coffee, and new creamers, she walks away - must have been the same batch of creamers. Same deal, chunks floating in one of our coffees. After waiting another 5+ minutes the waitress went to the table right next to us and ignored us when I said "excuse me ma'am". She eventually came back over after probably about 7 minutes. Got us a new coffee. In the meantime I grabbed the creamer from the empty table next to us. There was no sort of compensation for waiting 20+ mins after being sat to be able to drink our coffee and we waited close to 45mins total to get our food. Pancakes and some eggs. She said she was going to talk to the manager about the bad creamers, but never heard back. The first waitress either dropped our table or went home because we got a new waitress right after we got our food and she was super attentive; checking in 4 times, less than 10mins apart each time. Didn't catch the attentive waitresses name though. You would think most people wouldn't write a whole life story into a review about coffee and leave a two star review, but the service from everyone (except for the last lady) was so trash and I mean that from the bottom of my heart having worked food management/service since I was 17

Ashley K.

Yelp
Just ate lunch with my kids in between errands. Black Bear is a go to for us. Sat right away, greeted so friendly. And obviously food is great!
google avatar

Cori A.

Yelp
Food was delicious and portions were more than generous. There are a bunch of young women working here and they've certainly been trained in the fine art of customer service, well done, Black Bear. We visited Sunday morning around 9am and already it was busy but they've got lots of seating. I imagine this place just gets busier and busier, based on the amount of cars that were heading in as we left.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
It was delicious! From the moment we sat down, the service was impeccable! The coffee was delivered right away, the staff was attentive, and took our orders properly, The food that arrived was exceptional. The portions were large, but not overly so, everything was hot and prepared, precisely as desired. from the scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits, French toast and thick, sliced smoked bacon - who could ask for more The black bear diner is part of a chain, but if this is any indication, I hope they open one near us. who could ask for more.

Brett P.

Yelp
A good spot for families to eat. There is a variety of food to choose from, and the prices have been reasonably set. They have supported AYSO soccer along the way. I have been happy to support them. Our main store is in Layton, but I have also been in their Ogden and California stores and enjoy their menu items.

Kj N.

Yelp
Usually I don't get too excited about chain restaurants but the experience and food we had here today was fantastic. The diner has a hometown diner feel with it's friendly staff and newspaper menus, which are huge by way. Our server was Lizzie, and she was phenomenal! She was attentive, cheerful and friendly. She had great recommendations for us and it was obvious that she was familiar with the menu. Everything that we ordered was delicious! The pancakes were super fluffy and light (some of the best I've ever had), the steak was perfectly grilled and tender, and the tri-tip dip was flavorful. The only thing that was surprising was the meatloaf because it had more vegetables in it than one would expect, and having those larger chunks of veggies inside it was a little disconcerting. HOWEVER the flavor was still very good. Anyone looking for great diner food should definitely give the Black Bear Diner a try!

Yelp
My husband was taken here by his co-workers for lunch one day and he raved about it, however my neighbor wasn't so complimentary, so I had resisted. However, they were open on a Sunday (yeah!) and one bite told me I was going to have to admit he was right. :P Ate at the "bar" and our server was super friendly, helpful and accommodating. (Shame on me for not remembering her name!) Husband had the Parmesan Sourdough Cheeseburger w/onion rings, and I went for the Reuben, my quintessential sandwich choice when trying a new restaurant. They happened to have mac & cheese as a special, which the server subbed for an upcharge. Husband devoured his cheeseburger, and those onion rings were amazing. As for my Reuben...alas, I am permanently in love! Lots of meat, lots of flavor, but HUGE. Sure wish they offered a 1/2 sandwich combo w/the Reuben. I couldn't finish it and it didn't reheat well at the house. Mac & cheese was also good; next time though I'll try something different. Drinks never ran dry and pricing reasonable for the quantity. We'll be back.

Yelp
The food at other locations has been great. The person who sat us apparently didn't like her job and was having a terrible day and totally took it out on us. We made the mistake of asking about gluten free options. Treated us like shit so we walked out and will never go back to this location. Washington location in Southern Utah was super friendly and helpful and had great food, gluten free. That's the one we go back to.
google avatar

Shirl M.

Yelp
Diner, homestyle cooking type place! Service is very good with friendly and efficient servers. Food came out fairly quickly and hot! We had the following: Bacon and eggs Pancakes Homemade biscuits Corned beef hash and eggs Everything was good, I would say a step up from Denny's. Unfortunately, we ate way too fast and forgot to snap some photos:( All in all I would go back for homestyle breakfasts and friendly service!
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
The menu is huge. It's hard to believe that everything is cooked fresh to order, but it all tasted really fresh. The biscuits are much bigger than you would think. And they are not lying about the orange juice being freshly squeezed. It taste just like an orange. It was packed. They serve breakfast all day the omelet meals are larger than you'd think. Great portions for your money

Landen S.

Yelp
Usually I'm a fan of this place... but after the experience I just had with their staff, I don't think I'll ever be coming back. Raul the manager was completely disrespectful and had no care for his customers. They have a giant sign on the front of the restaurant that reads "Steak and Eggs $10.99 All Day" and that's it. No indication of what steak size or anything specific. So we order "steak and eggs" when we go to pay the steak and eggs came out to $21.99, so we ask about it... he looked at us and said "well you should have known. Sorry can't do anything for you"

Cody J.

Yelp
WOW, we come here at least three times a week a have never ran into "Raul", what a horrible person!!!! We asked a question about the $10.99 advertised steak deal, and he instantly got aggressive and told us it's $22. (???) Could have just simply communicated it, but instead, he brought out the waitress, made the customers feel VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, AND vilified the waitress in front of the entire restaurant. NEVER COMING BACK.

Rich D.

Yelp
The food is portioned good its your typical diner crackerbarrell type of place. Service can be a hit or miss

Devyn M.

Yelp
Black Bear Diner was amazing! thank you Aurora for getting us the food. everything was so good!

Chayboss C.

Yelp
If I could give this 8 stars I would. Food is always fantastic. Staff is awesome. My usual waitress, Shaylee, is always so cute and nice.

Yelp
Service was fantastic! Our food came out, extremely hot and with great time. Celebrated our birthday and loved every second of the huckleberry ice cream.

Yelp
Lunch time. I got a cheddar bacon burger with fries. I got 3 full size bacons and everything was great. My fires were nice and hot and cooked perfectly. My husband got the tri tip dip and he liked that a lot. My son got a grilled cheese and he ate it all gone. My waitress Sharon was a great waitress bot to just us we could see her working the room and getting the job done. I would have given 5 but those menus are just a damn no no. They give you this cute newspaper like menu, the problem is that they are reusing them. There is no way to disinfect them. I'm sorry that's just nasty I had us all go wash our hands after that. Everything else was great.
google avatar

MG N.

Yelp
It's a diner with a lot of menu variety. Food is decent. It's not bad and it's not the greatest. I will eat here when invited for breakfast. Very good service and huge portions. On the plus side, freshly squeezed orange juice.

Yelp
It was a good breakfast. Lots of food for a good peice.came out hot and fresh, server was friendly.

Tawnee H.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised! I've heard nothing but good things about Black Bear Diner... but it's a chain so I wasn't rushing to try it. I'm glad I finally stopped in. Service was great. The wait was reasonable (15 minutes for two on a Sunday around 1PM). Portions are HUGE. Price is fair. I got the Southern Scramble and I highly recommend it! It's so good. they gave me so many potatoes that I took about half of them home. Their house made sausage was very flavorful. Honestly, I can't wait to go back. Even if it's a chain, they do it right. Everything tastes super fresh and homemade... from the fresh squeezed orange juice, to the house sausages, to the real potatoes (not some frozen in a bag for too long type thing).
