Best Arab American Coffee Shops in Dearborn | Eater Detroit

"The multi-faceted coffee shop and retail art gallery showcase seasonal favorites like pistachio lattes and blackberry almond cakes alongside rotating solo and collective art exhibitions. Enjoy the work of local and national artists in the gallery while sipping an air-infused cup of coffee — a brewing method that uses a piston-style brewer to force coffee through a thin paper filter directly into the cup." - Courtney Burk

Google
My favorite coffee shop in Dearborn with the friendliest and most welcoming staff. Always quick even when they’re busy, and the best part the coffee is always hits. Would definitely recommend this spot any day!

Any matcha lover knows that this is NOT a good color for matcha. All I taste is milk and syrup. Not a hint of matcha. When I told the barista it was too sweet she said nothing we can do about it you have to pay for a new one but how was I supposed to know it would turn out horrible. I’ve been here a bunch of times it’s never tasted nor looked as horrible as today so obviously it isn’t consistent. If your matcha isn’t consistent i’d think the fairest thing you can do when you get a complaint is to fix it lol.

Was a cool little coffee place. Loved the art and set up. It wasn’t to busy when we went so we were able to get our coffee and get out pretty quickly which was good cause I was headed to my nieces birthday party. Service was pretty good, could of had a little more energy or music but the coffee made up for it. I just got a nice hot mocha with some Carmel and they did not have the toffee :/ still satisfied tho just don’t know if I would go out of my way with all these other cool coffee places in the area.

Google
I've had one of the best Lattes. Excellent flavour and taste. Not too sweet like some others and clear coffee taste. The place is nice, but not very obvious to notice when driving or walking around, and unfortunately, no drive through to be able to get coffee quick, and they close at 6pm.

Google
A wonderfully calm yet exciting place to be! The service is fast, pleasant, and you feel at home. The coffee is impeccable and they offer great options that are fresh and light but packed with flavor. The foods and sweets are freshly homemade and will be the best compliment to your visit. The art and lighting make your coffee even more comforting as you see the passion of many local artists displayed along the wall. Definitely a treat to visit and enjoy!

Google
My favorite coffee from here is the lavender 💜 latte. We were lucky enough to receive 2 date and walnut cake pieces for free during Eid. Thank you so much! Absolutely delicious! This is my new favorite coffee place!

Excellent espresso drinks... iced latte was made to perfection, and my husband enjoyed his cappuccino. Highly recommended!

Love at first sip! ☕️Black Box Coffee Shop & Art Gallery does not disappoint! The Lavender Latte was as beautiful as the gallery itself and the hospitality was as nice as I’ve experienced in quite some time. Many businesses struggle with creating an experience that guest will continue to enjoy and share with others. 5 Stars for Customer Service, 5 Stars for Decor, 5 Stars for location, nestled on the corner right in the heart of downtown Dearborns trending area, 5 Stars for accessibility, Indoor and outdoor walk up window is wheelchair friendly as well as patio seating. Free parking just steps away from entry. Add this place to the TOP of your next places to go. You’ll definitely see me there, I love all the smiling faces. 😌☕️

Yelp
I come to Black Box a couple times a month. I really enjoy the atmosphere which has a nice friendly artsy vibe. The art they display (which they change every month or so) feature local artists and can vary from paintings to pictures. Their coffee and specialty drinks are very good but to be honest I usually just get an iced or hot matcha depending on the time of year (what can I say I am a simple guy). They do also have fresh baked goods available if you're looking for something sweet to go with your drink (they are pretty tasty too). I also love the fact that they have an outdoor walk up window. Since this is a local place for me I can walk up with my dogs and feel comfortable not having to bring them in the establishment or if I don't feel like going in I can just quickly order there. The staff is often pretty friendly and accommodating if you have any questions for them about their drinks or need to make an adjustment to your order. They also are usually very efficient with getting your drink order ready even during busy times. One thing you need to remember though is that since they are a gallery they have limited indoor seating but if you want to stay for a while they have some standing tables and an outdoor seating area to accommodate you.

Yelp
I visited here after a full breakfast next door. I was curios because I never even saw a his building before. Upon stepping in I was immediately in love. The artistry throughout is breathtaking, the smell of coffee is divine and not overwhelming. The coffee itself is perfect and the service was faster than expected. We hung out for a bit just to soak in the atmosphere. I would come here everyday if it was closer to where I live. But I'll have to settle for once a week going forward. And I'm telling all of my friends visit too.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this spot. They have unique options as well as your standard drip coffee. A gallery to pass the time & neat homemade trinkets for purchase. My Matcha latte was refreshing. Someone got the seasonal vanilla maple & another had the air infused espresso. Everyone left happy :) Definitely a nice little spot. Oh & super friendly staff! Thanks again. Oh ! There's even a 10% off a cup of coffee if you check in on yelp. (for now) hopefully you get it too

Yelp
It was a really cute place with art installations in the back. Although there was a line, the coffee came out relatively quick. I ordered a lavender latte and it was extremely tasty.

Yelp
LOVE this place! Cute little walk up window you can order at on a nice sunny day. They have great lattes here I always try their seasonal drinks when I can. I had the honey bee when I went last which was a honey vanilla latte and it was delicious! If I lived closer I'd be here everyday

Yelp
I was running some errands in my old stomping grounds of Dearborn. I hadn't been here since well before the start of the pandemic and I was so excited to see all the new businesses and developments hopping there along Michigan Avenue. As I was parking, I saw the Black Box building and made a mental note to look up what it was when I parked. I quick search on Yelp told me that it is a much beloved art gallery and coffee shop. I was feeling a bit parched on that sunny day so I popped in to check it out. And I'm so glad I did! I had the most lovely experience! After a year+ of lockdown I was afraid I had forgotten how to socialize but the super friendly Sarah made for easy conversation as I waited for my iced tea (they brew and chill your choice on the spot). I learned that they had recently moved into this new space from down the block and it's truly the perfect location. There's a ton of foot traffic over there and they take full advantage of it, too, with a walk up window for ordering. I was already making plans to bring my pups with me next time for a stroll through town and a walk up here to get a beverage. It's also great if you're out for a jog and need a refuel, or just want to grab and go. The tables inside hadn't been set back up yet so the space felt very comfortable and spacious. I'm fully vaxxed but also fully 100% a hypochondriac so I haven't quite let go of my mask yet but I would have felt super comfortable taking it off there because it was so airy. As part art gallery they also had some artwork up on the walls and this weekend they have a "paint and pour over" event where $25 can get you a coffee and paint supplies to enjoy an artistic afternoon with a friend or on your own. Love that concept and I can't wait to see what they do next now that things are loosening around here! Oh, and by the way, my iced tea was delicious!

Yelp
I recently visited black box and I was amazed by the Great service, great tasting coffee, and. great concept. Everything was so amazing and the staff and owners were so friendly. This little gem is a family owned business. They have a walk up window which I think is pretty awesome. The two best selling drinks are the lavender latte and the iced caramel latte. Check out how beautiful they both look if u swipe right. They both tasted delicious. And they were paired beautiful with a freshly made strawberry rhubarb cake. Never had it before but it was super good !!! What's unique about them is that they feature many artists on the wall and have events such as open mic night. Definitely sounds like a cool place to be to meet some ppl. We'll be seeing you guys soon

Yelp
Very good London Fog and extremely friendly people. The art on the walls were amazing. I wish they had seating indoors so I could have stayed. I was carrying a suitcase and backpack after being stranded at the airport and waiting to go to an afternoon flight. Quality all around d.

Yelp
The atmosphere is beautiful the best is the coffe It's my first time visit Detroit City and found Black Box and ordered their single origin coffee, very impressed with their quality of beans. Definitely recommend this cafe.

Yelp
This is the best coffee I have ever had in Dearborn! will definitely be coming back a lot:) super cute place too!

Yelp
Wow ! It's nice old house changing to very modern cafe what I feel first. If have mask they can allow to come inside if not just get coffee out side. no big deal. But inside ... very Artie ... I love that. And everyone working here are very friendly! Coffee taste excellent...

Yelp
Absolutely *amazing* addition to this area! Black Box is a wonderful, family run artisan coffee shop. After searching a bit on Yelp for a new coffee shop, I started my day on a sunny morning by going to get Black Box and the walk up window was the sweetest addition to the experience. The barista was very knowledgeable and friendly and told me the lavender latte was their most popular menu item so that's what I ordered. Lavender lattes can be tricky sometimes but at Black Box, their lavender was *wow* so yummy!! I also tried the blackberry almond cake, which is made fresh by the owner, and it was such a yummy, light pastry to have with my coffee!! I will definitely be making this a regular place for my coffee and morning vibe!

Yelp
Well, wow. How incredibly cool. I honestly wouldn't have thought that this place was a super cool coffee shop if I hadn't searched through Yelp. But, I'm blown away by how awesome this place is. First, the coffee shop things: the selection is limited, but high-quality. I'm currently nibbling on a ridiculously tasty almond croissant. I'm told that there are usually additional selections, but they are out at the moment. That's fine with me. But, if you look at the artwork here, it reminds me that I haven't been in art gallery in a very long time. This place is a great excuse to change that. The owner said that they change the exhibit about once a month. They have concerts here sometimes. And, they also have smaller, more affordable things, made by Detroit area artists. This is a super cool fusion of concepts that I would expect to see in the bay area of California. Fortunately, I don't have to drive that far to get to this place.

Yelp
Not your typical coffee shop. A wonderful corner place for coffees off Wagner Place on Michigan Ave. My sister and I came here right after our lunch to try a Cappuccino and a Latte, with dessert. The pours were perfect and had a cute design on top. A delectable slice of Blackberry almond cake. The interior was modestly decorated with local artists works on the walls. Service was friendly and also happy to answer all our questions about the place and artwork. This is the first time I have ever tried a stand up bar coffee shop, but due to Covid sit down seating wasn't available at the time. I can't wait until the weather is warmer to take my coffee outside to enjoy the view and weather. This place will defiantly get busier when Covid is finally done, and more people are out and about. I would highly recommend you give this place a try if your in West Dearborn!

Yelp
Such a hidden gem! My family and I had a great time visiting Black box! We went on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only people inside. The staff was so welcoming and friendly! I ordered an iced latte with caramel and it was delicious! I enjoyed looking at the paintings while enjoying my coffee! I will definitely return.

Yelp
i live in birmingham and make the 25 minute drive anytime i can. their coffee is some of the best in the world. i love all of the posters they hang up and they occasional cookie they serve. Love this place don't listen to any other review about this place
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
We all know I love a good coffee place. Casual comforts meet true hospitality after talking with the barista and owner. A true testament to how friendly people truly make an experience worth it. I'll likely be back tomorrow just to try the homemade sweet treats. Came for a concert- staying for the coffee!

James F.

Yelp
Early morning walk led me to Black Box Americano - 8oz the mix of espresso was perfect Piping Hot A pause for a moment of art work The day has started nicely
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Had an Americano (nice) & triple berry almond cake (wonderful). Very cool little spot tucked away. Warm greeting from the baristas, art lined walls, nice chill vibe. Next time I'll opt for not-to-go.
google avatar

Sydnee W.

Yelp
Our go-to coffee spot! Their iced caramel latte is my absolute favorite. They blend the flavoring in with the milk which gives it a special touch and makes it have a delicious frothy top. The grab and go window is convenient for sitting outside at their tables, or going inside offers an opportunity to see unique, local artwork they have for sale/on display! Only little critique I have is hoping that someday they will make their own flavored syrups for their coffees - they currently use the usual brand you see everywhere and I try to avoid due to the ingredients added. Otherwise, seriously 100% 5 star with kind employees and owners. We are forever guests and come almost weekly :)

L A.

Yelp
Best coffee , matcha lattes, almond cake and many more. Great customer service and beautiful art gallery.

Yelp
A wonderfully calm yet exciting place to be! The service is fast, pleasant, and you feel at home. Yelp
I love this place. We moved out of Dearborn right as the pandemic hit but have been coming to the area a lot to try out all the new places that opened after we left. This place is somewhere I so, so badly wish had opened prior to our move because I probably would've walked over every single day. The cafe is really sleek and modern inside, but still a cozy vibe, and the staff who work there are very welcoming and friendly. There is a walk up window where you can order coffee from outside as well and enjoy your coffee in the outdoor area behind all of the Michigan Avenue businesses. Their lattes are so smooth and perfect, the lavender latte with oatmilk is a favorite of mine. I always try to make sure to stop by here for a coffee if I'm in the area. Definitely a must try spot.
google avatar

Kawthar A.

Yelp
5 stars for service, great tasting coffee, great concept/location! Currently they have a walk up window and the inside is open for viewing art. Soon they'll have outdoor seating too! However i wish they had a larger coffee size and personally I'd ask for more chocolate syrup in the mocha if you like it richer.

Yelp
Who knew that one of the most popular spots in an up-and-coming neighborhood would be an art gallery? That's precisely the case at Black Box Gallery, a cool must-see that has transformed a tired corner in southwest Dearborn. The most recent (and well timed) exhibition, Posters on Politics, proved to be so popular that its stay was extended. This and other exhibitions have proven to be an easy way to spend a leisurely day learning something you've never even imagined. Lately, Black Box Gallery has expanded its hours to offer fresh coffee and baked goods indoors and through its convenient walk-up window. For early-risers, this is quickly proving to be a fast, convenient, and tasty way to start the day. The various blends of coffee offer tasting experiences as unique as the parts of the world from which they came, and the teas are a great way to warm up, too. You also MUST try the fresh-baked pastries, which include a slightly-sweet almond flavor to a more zesty, yet not messy, za'atar reminiscent of the best of the Middle East. Do yourself a favor and introduce yourself to the Alcodray family. You'll feel very welcomed and you will already being planning your return visit before leaving your current one.

Laura B.

Yelp
This is an interesting concept. It does not invite one to sit and relax. All the "eco" cups are disposable to go. The space has art on the walls. The coffee was mediocre. And overpriced. The staff were super nice and friendly. It was enjoyable enough, but not what I am looking for in a coffee shop.
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
Just stopped in this place , amazing customer service, amazing for the local community not only are the products great but they feature local artisans. stop in and see Pat and Sarah

Yelp
Delicious coffee, cozy atmosphere, and phenomenal service! This family run coffee shop has easily become one of my favorite go-to shops with their lavender latte being my ultimate favorite (so yum!). I enjoyed my latte with a piece of warm, homemade Blackberry Almond Cake, which I highly recommend! The Dark Chocolate Chip Sea Salt Cookies are AMAZING too! The art is constantly updated and created by very talented local artists. This is overall a beautifully ran business by a beautiful and warm hearted family who is ever so welcoming! Everyone should go try this amazing coffee and enjoy the art!

Z S.

Yelp
This place is soooo cute, it always has an art or community event happening. Their gallery changes every few months and there is always something new to see. The coffee is the best in Dearborn, deserts are delicious, and the matcha latte is PERFECT. It's not too sweet and it has a really balanced matcha and milk flavor. I always go here when I'm walking in downtown West Dearborn, and it has a convenient walk up window that makes it easy to grab a drink and go. Its literally the perfect business to be at that corner: a friendly, neighborhood coffee shop.

Ra K.

Yelp
No seating. I asked for Wi-Fi they wouldn't give it to me. At least they let me use the restroom

Abe F.

Yelp
Finally. Some GOOD coffee in West Dearborn. Love what they did with this spot. The walk up window is awesome. Met the owner on our first visit. Nice guy who loves what he's doing. I've been here twice already and have had a great experience both times. Plenty of parking directly across the street in the parking structure.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not a big yelper. But this spot deserves to be put on blast. My buddy and I were looking for a spot to have a cup of coffee and play a few songs. He mentioned the new spot on the corner of Carlysle and Monroe and that's where we ended up. We were greeted by the owner, Ray. He was extremely welcoming and professional. We asked him if we could play a few songs and he was all for it. The coffee and service are second to none. The space is wide open with walls filled with exceptional works of local art. This spot is a fresh breath of air for the city. Be sure to support your local business and get up here for a solid cup of coffee and conversation. Hopefully you're lucky enough to run into Uncle Al.

Yelp
Absolutely the best coffee shop in the area, even all of Michigan, if you will! Service is phenomenal, Sarah is THE BEST! This place is such a vibe, amazing coffee, an art gallery and perfect service... what more could you want? Stop by you won't regret it!!

Nour B.

Yelp
I love BlackBox! Their coffee is soo good and it's high quality. My sister and I visit regularly. I've never tried anything off the menu that wasn't good. My personal favorite is the Vanilla Almond Milk latte and the Nitro Cold Brew.
google avatar

Benny B.

Yelp
I discovered Black Box last summer when I heard about a new art gallery opening in Dearborn. I have seen every exhibition since finding them and they are always engaging and enjoyable. They have also been slowly rolling out the coffee shop within the gallery and it is imho the best coffee shop in Dearborn! They serve Great Lakes Roasters Coffee and pull a mighty fine espresso. Having moved here from Portland, Oregon not too long ago I learned to appreciate great tasting coffee while living there. Ditch the chain shops and go to Black Box I hope they start selling whole beans one day for my home brewing. I this little stretch of Monroe St. and look forward to seeing how it grows.
google avatar

Fatima J.

Yelp
Best coffee I've ever had, I've been here several times and the coffee never fails to disappoint!! All of the baked goods are made by them as well and they are always so delicious!!! Needless to say, this place is the best! Bussing, respectfully!
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
This art gallery features local artists and serves the best of local coffees. They grind and brew your coffee to order. It is always fresh and delicious. Try their specialty, a lavender latte which is never too sweet and always perfect! They also serve fresh cookies and a delicious Swedish blackberry cake that you can eat out of hand. But get there early, because they are made daily and when they are gone, they are gone!
google avatar

Peter W.

Yelp
We had a chai latte and a lavender latte. Both were absolutely fantastic. We appreciated the walk-up window, which is even a great idea in a non-Covid world because coffee is just as much of a treat as ice cream.

Daniel W.

Yelp
This is a fantastic coffee shop. The owner and his wife are very nice and make great coffee. It is a wonderful space that is very clean and will host some nice art. The coffee is Great Lakes Coffee and it is brewed to perfection. Make sure to stop by if you're ever in the area!

Michael H.

Yelp
Drove by a few times but never went in. The building was striking and finally went in. They serve Great Lakes Coffee and Golden Wheat bakes goods. Coffee was reasonably priced, especially for high quality Great Lakes coffee. Owner brewed it right and didn't charge much for it. Service was personable and good. Overall great experience and I will be back for more.

Maha A.

Yelp
The spice chai latte is amazing. Service is phenomenal and quick. The lady who works there has such great customer service, she has awesome recommendations. I've been here twice already and definitely recommend coming here. I think the second time around it was the owner who took our order I'm not sure, but the gentleman was very nice and quick with our order. They even have a walk up window outside but be sure to wear your mask(I completely forgot, so I'm telling you all now lol). So convenient located right in walking distance of all the restaurants in that plaza. Highly recommend coming here!
google avatar

Kaylee D.

Yelp
Arguably the best Cappuccino in the Detroit area! Really cute space with interesting art and unique pieces for sale. The cafe has has a really contemporary hipster vibe and reminds me a lot of the coffee shops in Seattle. They also have pastries delivered from the Golden Bakery in Warren which are amazing! I had a thyme croissant that has pistachios and middle eastern spices. It was soo good, I wish I would have gotten 2. The owner Ray takes a lot of pride in pulling the perfect shot and I highly recommend checking out the place especially if you are looking for an experience outside of your typical commercial Starbucks or Tim Hortons.

Adi C.

Yelp
Likely one of the best coffee shops in the greater Detroit area. I had passed by a number of times without going in but decided to on a day I had more time. I am glad that I did. The ambience is befitting of a coffee shop of this quality. In particular, I am impressed with the lattes. THEY WERE DELICIOUS. all around a GREAT PLACE.

Saif J.

Yelp
The coffee tastes very good. Very good service. I like the art gallery. Can you expand into smoothies please?

Areej D.

Yelp
This coffee shop is sooo cute! The staff is so welcoming and helpful when it comes to recommending drinks. Will deff be coming back!
google avatar

Sully C.

Yelp
Such a huge cultural addition to the neighborhood! Great place to stop and enjoy a yummy cup of Great Lakes coffee and enjoy the ever changing art shows and events. The owners are awesome people also who I always look forward to chatting with and finding out what new shows they have planned for this wonderful space.

Roseann B.

Yelp
I attended a couple art openings here over the summer and there was some pretty cool art! I just went back and they have a coffee shop now. Had a pretty amazing cappuccino and the folks working were super nice. I have a question..................there are 8 really good reviews of this place that are hidden away in the "not recommended" review section but one really bad one which looks fake to me that is showing. Why is this? The place is not a dump and like I said the coffee is really good. They have a holiday shop up right now so it does not feel like a gallery at the moment but there is a a lot of cool gift type crafts for sale. Anyway, highly recommend!
