Black Camel - Review - Rosedale - Toronto - The Infatuation

"Whether you’re looking for picnic supplies to take to Queens Park nearby or to fuel up before making the drive to the Toronto Zoo, make sure you stop in at Black Camel. It’s a cafe and sandwich bar in Rosedale that uses the highest quality ingredients and makes everything on-site, including brisket that takes five days to prepare and homemade BBQ sauce. And despite being in Rosedale - one of Toronto’s more expensive residential areas - the prices are actually reasonable, with all the sandwiches running under $10." - Katie Diamond

Service was very friendly however…. Was pretty excited to try their slow roasted beef risket sandwich. For $14 it was a really big sandwich with full of meat. But did I like it so much and I would make a trip for this sandwich? Tastewise it was very ordinary sandwich for me. Coffee was also just okay.

Google
Absolutely the best beef brisket sandwich! So delicious! And a great bowl of chili too! Must-visit in Toronto

Google
Pretty good tbh, but not soooo mind blowing that I’d come back. Meat (I got chicken) is pretty generous but I found that the sauce wasn’t uniform, so some bite got a lot of sauce and some barely any. The bread is good but could’ve carried the sauce better - it was very wet on the outside crust part, but the inside of the bread didn’t absorb the sauce as well as I’d like. However considering the price, this is a pretty good sandwich and I’d recommend checking it out.

Google
Delicious beef brisket sandwiches at black camel, though the menu lacks vegetarian options and charges extra for basic toppings like tomato and pickles. The pricing appears high considering the portion sizes. However, with some adjustments such as including toppings in the sandwich price and revising the pricing structure, the overall dining experience could be significantly improved. beware that there's not much seating area/tables for dine-in.

Google
I ordered the beef biscuit sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious. The restaurant was crowded, but I was surprised that the service only took about three minutes!

Had a lovely experience here. Tried the brisket and the pulled pork. Both were good but my favorite was the brisket with bbq sauce. They have a fantastic bun with their sandwich. A nice selection of coffee items and a very cool vintage espresso machine. Good food at a descent price and portion size.

Google
Had this bookmarked for years. Finally got to try them out. Sandwhiches are so good. We absolutely devoured the beef brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. There's not much seating. About 2 small tables inside and couple outside on the patio. Takes about 10 minutes. We went on a Sunday of a long weekend and there wasn't much of a line up.

Google
Great sandwich shop. Good for takeout. Easy to order, however pick up was a bit harder due to the line up and no clear direction. Still managed. Sandwiches are delicious and moist. Raving about the texture of the brisket or tenderness of the chicken sandwiches. Sauces are also very good compliment to the quality ingredients. Took it home after 30minutes and still tasted amazing!

Yelp
Delicious. We got the pulled chicken and veggie sandwich. Servings were really good and the sandwiches were made super quick. Wish they had more variety and seating

Yelp
I heard of this place in 2014, kept telling myself I am gonna stop by one day. And then 10 years passed :D I stopped by around 1600 and they looked closed so I was a litte sad but still came to the door and checked. Super glad I did because they were open. There were 2 very friendly ladies there, one behind the cash and the other in the kitchen. I mentioned that it was my first time there and the lady by the cash took me through her recommendations. Got 2 sandos to go: The seared steak sandwich with caramelized onion, sauced with charamoula mayo. The thinly sliced cold steak sandwich works super well woth this garlicy mayo. The menu provided warning that it's "not hot" as in the temperature, but it's not crazy cold either. Think cold cut in room temp. The steak was juicy and not fibrous at all. Highly recommended!!! The slow roasted pulled pork with roasted sweet pepper, sauced with bbq and chipotle mayo. This was a very satisfying hot sandwich, pork melted jn your mouth and their bbq sauce was not overly sweet. Not too sure of what kind of buns were used, but they were soft and fluffy. 10 years of "one day" was nicely paid off! Would come back to try the slowe roasted beef brisket since they said it's the favorite.

Yelp
A solid freaking sandwich in the city. I got the pulled pork with the house bbq sauce and chamouya (?) mayo. Super soft and flavourful pork, but it's really the sauce that brings it together. Toppings are extra cost, but the onions and mushrooms really add a nice layer of flavour. Get lots of napkins, because it's very messy. Minimal seating, but enjoy at the park nearby.

Yelp
Black Camel is a small cute sandwich shop located across Rosedale subway station as I happened to be in the area. I decided to give it a try especially since it's so close to the subway. Their menu is a bit small but they still offer range of sandwiches for both meat lovers and vegetarians! - Location: It's quite small and might be easy to pass by since they do not promote what they sell inside and on a small street instead of the main street. However, you'll easily be able to identify the black camel logo. Amazing location for those going through the subway as it's right across Rosedale station. - Portions: It's a reasonable size for what you pay for. The beef brisket sandwich was around $12 which can seem a little pricey but the beef brisket was soooo tasty probably one of few best sandwiches I've had in Toronto and that's worth the money. - Quick service: I recommend ordering pickup in advance especially since they were pretty efficient with their time estimates for pickup arrival. They don't have a lot of seating inside so I highly recommend it as a takeout meal. Overall, a good experience, I wouldn't mind revisiting again to try out their other sandwiches in the future

Yelp
We ordered the beef brisket and a chilli. The sandwich was just ok. The chilli wasn't very flavourful and didn't taste like it had any meat in it. Not a place I'd recommend or visit again.

Yelp
Very good sandwich. Beef brisket is tender. They make it fast. Location is also good. Next to the Rosedale station. I'll definitely come back if I'm in this area.

Yelp
Woahhhh this place is TOO good. I came here with a friend to grab some sandwiches for lunch. They have a pretty straight forward menu, but the sandwiches are super customizable so it may take awhile to decide what to order (at least, it for me haha). All sandwiches come with 2 sauces (free) and toppings for .95. While I do wish that toppings were just included in the price, I didn't mind paying extra because the sandwich is incredible. I ordered the Pulled BBQ pork shoulder with the Black Camel BBQ Saucr and the Charamoula Mayo. This combo of sauces was TO DIE FOR!! I would come back for the sauces alone. I also added roasted tomato's and arugula. It was so amazing, delicious, and filling!!! Would definitely come back if I'm ever in the area againz

Yelp
Don't be fooled by its simplicty or size. Black Camel is an excellent sandwich shop with delicious house coffee located conveniently outside Rosedale Station. The staff are friendly and take the time to ensure your questions are answered. With quite a few sandwiches to choose from there is something for everyone. I had the opportunity to try roasted veg which included tomato, sweet red pepper, arugula and eggplant. I will definitely be returning !

Yelp
BANG for your buck. HUGE portion size. definitely worth coming by for. This will fill you up for a few hours easily. Great and friendly service. I wouldn't eat inside, which I don't think you can anyways, but tons of space outside if you're just walking downtown. Not much more to say. Amazing experience! 4.3/5

Yelp
The beef brisket with cheese is very good. The steak sandwich is served cold... not that great, but i like the way its sliced thin.
google avatar

Yelp
Black camel has one of the best beef brisket sandwiches I've ever had! You get to choose two sauces and can add on topping, so I usually mix the sweet and smoky BBQ with the herby charmoula mayo, and top it off with some caramelized onions. Always a heck of a bite!

Yelp
TLDR; If it's your first time, don't overthink it. Enter, ask the person at the counter what they recommend, and enjoy! There's a reason it's one of the best sandwich shops in the city! Based on the advice of a wonderful lady working the register, I chose the brisket sandwich with barbecue sauce and horseradish. It was spectacular. The meat was cooked to perfection, and both sauces complemented each other so well. It's a marriage made in heaven. I also tried a creation of mine with chicken and spicy mayo, but I wasn't as impressed. I should have asked them what to get instead! And don't stop at sandwiches. They also have pastries and espresso. It's a small store, so don't expect to sit and get ready for long lines. It's worth it, though!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches in Toronto! Always fresh ingredients, amazing sauces and toppings, and the bread is delicious. This place is more ideal for takeout, there isn't much space to sit down and eat unless you go in the warmer months when their patio is open with a few tables. Recommend you go early as they often sell out. This is a toronto staple!!

Yelp
Been here 3-4 times already. Love their menu specially the pulled pork and beef. Worth it!

Yelp
I have been dreaming of going back to Black camel to eat their beef brisket sandwich again. This sandwich is da-bomb!!!! I had gone here just before they were closing and it was raining too.The place was empty and I did get to chat with the girl behind the counter-I asked her for her suggestion and without taking any time she recommended the beef brisket sandwich. So you build your sandwich-the process is quite uncomplicated-you pick a meat, your sauces and toppings. After the first or second topping they charge you for for additional topping pls check the menu.My order was the brisket wIth charamoula mayo topped with carmalized onions and coleslaw.I took it to go. I took my first bite in the car and boy oh boy the beef just melted in my mouth the flavors were on point and the quality of meat was amazing. The sauce did full justice plus the toppings.Eating the sandwich in the car was not a great idea as it can become very messy but I could g hold off since it was amazingly good and it would totally get soggy if I had waited. The best thing about it was the less sodium used in the beef brisket-felt like I was eating a homemade beef brisket sandwich. Parking could be a challenge here.

Yelp
This shop has lovely staff and a small seating section in the front. I love their logo and how close they are to a park if you want to sit and eat there. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and I thought it was just alright. It wasn't anything special. I wish it was more flavourful.

Yelp
The other day we tried the Slow Roasted Beef Brisket and Pulled BBQ Pork Shoulder sandwiches. They were sooo good and flavourful. They each come with your pick of 2 sauces, recommend trying out their Black Camel BBQ Sauce! The meats were so tender, and we loved how saucy the pulled pork one was. The sandwiches are also HUGE! We got a side of coleslaw to add on top as a topping and it was a gamechanger. Great spot for a BBQ sandwich!

Yelp
Decided to stop in after running some errands in the area, as the last time I had a sandwich from here was about 10 years ago! I got the slow roasted beef brisket with Dijon mustard, caramelized onions, and arugula. The bun was super fresh, the brisket was decent - a tad dry and seemed almost like a hash - and flavourful, and everything combined to be super tasty. Overall, worth the stop. Maybe I won't wait another 10 years before I go again.

Yelp
Came by with my girlfriend to pick up a drink before our event. When we got into the store front, there weren't anyone to greet us. Which felt odd. Anyhow, we ordered a latte and after a short wait the drink came out. It tasted amazing, with strong aromatics and great flavour. Service wise, it's just okay. Nothing worth to note.

Yelp
In the past this has been one of my favourite sandwiches places in the city. However, I found the sandwich didn't meet the same heights of my last experiences. Which was around Nov 2020. I always get the beef brisket sandwich. The bun tasted different and not as good as before, a little stale tasting. It also seemed the portion of meat given in the sandwich has decreased. The chili is really great. Still a very tasty sandwich. Just not as good as it once was. However, it's still one of the best in the city to be fair. I miss the old buns though.

Yelp
I've worked in this neighbourhood almost a year and a half and my exploration of nearby restaurants continues. I'm not sure why it took me so long to come here but it was worth the wait. It's a tiny little place, narrow and deep, with very limited seating, including a patio with two tables of two. The service counter is on the left, racks of products and a fridge on the right, and the kitchen/prep area at the back. The space is tight. I was greeted by two very friendly young ladies who, upon learning it was my first time here, recommended their most popular item, the Slow Roasted Beef Brisket Sandwich with the house BBQ sauce and caramelized onions. I added a small coleslaw and Coke. By the time I paid for my order, it was ready! That's quick! What I got was a thick sandwich loaded with tender juicy beef, topped with the BBQ sauce and onions. Delicious! I actually ate it with a knife and fork because it was so thick and juicy and I didn't want to mess up my camera. The creamy coleslaw was also pretty good. I enjoyed this meal! It looks like they also do a good coffee business, with espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and even their own Camel Blend dark roast. I'll have to try one next time. The girls also recommended I try the pulled pork or roasted chicken on my next visit. Noted!

Yelp
They had their order/pickup station set up in the front door for covid reasons during my visit and the menu displayed in the front window. I had the brisket sandwich with caramelized onions sauced with bbq and dijon mustard. Brisket was well seasoned and very tender. Sauces complimented the rich fattiness of the meat. Definitely my new go to spot for hot sandwiches. Looking forward to try the steak sandwich next time I'm around.

Yelp
Hello Foodies ...today I bring you another amazing food review and must try if you're in the area of this little cozy takeout sandwich shop. The Black Camel has some pretty amazing reviews and after trying their food now I see how well deserved they were. The Black Camel is located on the northeast corner of Young and Crescent Rd located across Rosedale subway station in a very tiny building with no real signage other than a picture of a camel so not the easiest place to locate but it is very well-known in the neighborhood and area as this place is super busy. They specialize in these incredible Gourmet style sandwiches they are renowned for their 5-day slow-cooked beef brisket & pulled pork. They are fully customizable to your liking with many different in-house-made sauces and different toppings. I have had both their pulled pork and brisket sandwiches and they were both amazing however today this review is for the beef brisket I opted for this time. Food 5/5 ...The slow-cooked brisket is so juicy and so incredible melt-in-your-mouth beef that I have never had such tender beef to this degree. The beef is piled high in what I believe is a brioche bun really soft and with a perfect beef-to-bread ratio, I opted for the caramelized onions and arugula with their tangy sweet BBQ sauce, and oh man was it the perfect combo of topping for this sandwich, and for me. Let me warn you there is no need to chew this beef is so darn tender it melts in your mouth, really juicy in its natural cooked juices, and not one bit Dry. Amazing just fire!! The best beef brisket sandwich I have ever had period!   Service 5/5 ...Exemplary service ...super friendly really take their time to treat you with love and always with a smile, they take out the time to really explain their food options and as far as customer service it does not get any better than this. A must-try place and must-try food!! Don't miss out on this one foodies.

Yelp
Phenomenal sandwiches. The best order: pulled brisket, pesto mayo, caramelized onions, argula. Delicious. Great place.
google avatar

Yelp
Tasty sandwiches. Black Camel does not offer much in the way of seating, but there is a lovely park across the street with plenty of benches where you can enjoy your lunch. I ordered the roasted veggie with basil pesto mayo and hummous. Our sandwiches came out in less than 5 minutes. The flavors of the sandwich all complemented each other well and nothing about the sandwich was overpowering. Overall, I was pleased with my experience and would recommend Black Camel.
google avatar

Danthanh L.

Yelp
I passed by this place countless of times and never went in till today. I ordered what the staff recommended, beef brisket with bbq sauce and caramelized onions. Cost $10-11. Its a big sandwhich, beef was tender and caramelized onions were not overpowering and pretty soft as well. I think there might have been a tad too much bbq sauce tho, wish I added some dijon mustard or something to balance it out a bit more. Also, very greasy so have tons of napkins ready. Interior is pretty small and is ideal for solo trips or with a friend. Only 2 small little tables for 2 people and a counter area for people to sit. When there is good weather they have 2 more small tables in front of the restaurant too. Not for big groups unless you plan to take out food and eat it at the park nearby. Overall, I would return. Solid casual lunch spot and if you like it make sure to get their loyalty card for points.

Yelp
Black Camel has been on my "to try" list for many years but because I'm rarely in this neighbourhood, I never found a chance to visit. A few days ago, I was around the area, so I popped in and ordered a slow roasted beef brisket sandwich with basil pesto mayo, dijon mustard and caramelized onions. Other yelpers are not kidding when they say the sandwiches are delicious! The crusty bun was light and soaked up some of the beef brisket juice. The beef brisket was tender and the beef flavour was enhanced by the subtly sweet onion. I couldn't really taste the basil pesto mayo, but it did give a creamy component to the sandwich. I would totally come here again if I'm craving for a hearty sandwich - even if I have to make a slight detour to get here!
google avatar

Yelp
Found this jawn on my drive from the west. Got the brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken and, the BLT for the family. Everyone enjoyed their sandwich immensely, left overs were consumed expeditiously the next day. My dad wanted to stop by again the next day to continue making his way down the list of items on their menu. Needless to say these ain't your regular sandwiches.
google avatar

Tina D.

Yelp
I came here for the first time yesterday and I am officially obsessed. This is not your typical sandwich spot - these are next level sandwiches. My boyfriend and I ordered the chicken BLT & the beef brisket and they were the tastiest sandwiches I've ever tried. The brisket comes plain with your choice of sauce and caramelized onions. I was worried that it would be too sweet but I got it with bbq chipotle sauce and it was absolutely perfect! It was a good serving and we didn't feel overly stuffed after eating either. Highly recommended and can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Black Camel aka YAAAAS! Hands down the best sandwich I've ever had accompanied with excellent customer service. If you can make me, an awkward person, have conversation - you're probably doing great. I got the beef brisket sandwich with pesto, bbq sauce, and coleslaw around 1 on a weekday. There were a few people grabbing things to go and I was glad I only waited a minute for it. They have around 10 seats in store and although the shop is tiny, it does the job. Now onto the mouth watering sandwich. The beef brisket had the perfect melting texture (I'm not good at describing meats) and the sauces that accompanied it was delicious! Coleslaw made it even better. They also put a hand wipe napkin inside too which is so cute and shows that once again, Black Camel goes above and beyond. Will. Return. SOON!
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
The sandwiches are really good. I'm fond of the veggie sandwich with Cole slaw side. Easy to order and picnic across the street in the park.

Yelp
Few weeks back I stopped in to Black Camel for Lunch. I have heard from a few friends that the sandwiches here are to die for. I opted to try the Slow Roasted Beef Brisket Sandwich. This was no small sandwich. The size was bigger than I expected for the price. Only $8.75 and you had a large kaiser roll full of tender goodness. You got a choice of two sauces and I went with the in house Black Camel BBQ sauce and the Chiptole Mayo. The meat was super tender and melted in your mouth. Paired with the two sauces made it slightly messy but well worth it. I will definitely be back to try the other sandwiches on the menu. If your near Rosedale station and are hungry stop in at Black Camel you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
Solid sandwiches with very high quality ingredients! Excellent service - fast and friendly!
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches with a good amount of meat, coated just right with sauce, & the bun was chewy and not tough. I tried their Camel BLT+chicken with the recommended chipotle mayo and the Pulled Pork sandwich. The Camel BLT was my favourite of the two, the pulled pork was good but not mind-blowing. I'd definitely want to try their brisket next time!
google avatar

Mitchell Z.

Yelp
I'm not sure if this place is under new ownership, but the quality and quantity of my last sandwich (beef brisket) was way lower than I expected. There was much less meat in the sandwich than I have ever had before. It tasted fine, but I won't be going back until things change. PS. To the earlier reviewer. Toronto loves lines? That's dumb.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
I got the beef brisket sandwich. Super packed with flavour. However, the buns were damp from condensation in the packaging by the time we started eating (which was maybe 5 min after getting the sandwiches). Sandwich looked squished and was very greasy and messy. Overall...not the best experience. This was made worse since we were eating in the car (we figured we should just eat ASAP rather than wait to get home). It was like eating a sandwich that was trying to live up to the restaurant's reputation of being flavourful and really good, but sadly wasn't making the cut. Lots of sauce dribbling off from the insides though miraculously the beef brisket itself didn't fall out (which was good). My fingers still had sauce on them after wiping off the mess with a napkin and two wet wipes. Despite the somewhat disappointing experience, I'm willing to give this place another chance. Definitely going to get a different order - something that won't be as squishy or messy.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
A perfect spot to grab a sandwich and the. Head to the park. Sauces and condiments are always on point. Service is friendly and quick. Cool pocket spot for a neighbourhood sandwich shop.

Yelp
Camel Club is one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. It's worth every penny

Yelp
Not astonished by the outstanding reviews on yelp for this little place. The place is clean and simple, welcoming and helpful staff, very simple menu, help you choose your meat, sauce and toppings yourself. I ordered and brisket sandwich, with home bbq sauce, coleslaw, and mushrooms, very delicious, easy to eat, the brisket portion is big and very succulents, not dry but falling apart. The bbq sauce is not my favorite choice yet it has lovely sour taste. The bun is big size, fits all the toppings and the meat, and can absorb all the moisture without dripping while eating. The prices are excellent, you get the sandwich for 8.35 $ and you pay 90 cents for each topping. I ended up paying about 12 $ total for a large size sandwich. This is a place I would recommend you to try, definitely i will be coming back to try other menu items.
google avatar

Rennie M.

Yelp
Decent, but I don't get the hype. Clearly solid ingredients well made, tho bread was not stellar, but honestly, to my palette, I was not blown away. Yet, Toronto loves lines and this place provides. Prepare to line up and wait. Not bad, just I don't get they hype.
google avatar

Kat J.

Yelp
What a glorious place! I got the sandwich with pulled chicken, pancetta, roasted tomatoes, their bbq sauce (so good!), mayo on their buns. Wow. It was amazing. From the first bite to the last I knew I'd picked the right option! The meat was cooked perfectly, the sauces were so flavourful and the bun was everything you want in a bun! I'll be getting this again for sure!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
These sandwiches are amazing! They are packed with wholly goodness. I ordered the slow roasted beef brisket sandwich with bbq sauce on the top and the charamoula mayo at the bottom of the bun. I also ordered it with fontina cheese and mushrooms for toppings. The meat itself is so tender and plenty, the buns act as bowls perfectly wrapping the beef. For the price, it's under $10 and leaves you completely full and satisfied! I highly recommend it! I have even heard great things for the vegetarian sandwich if you're not into meat.
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
This place is great and the location is convenient as it is right off the subway line. There isn't really much seating so it's mostly for takeout. The sandwiches are great and full of flavor. Was really glad that my friend recommended this place to me!
google avatar

Yelp
Was introduced to this place by my bf, who came here years ago and loved it. It's a small cozy restaurant near Rosedale Station. We were the first customers there on a Sunday and the staff helped us with recommendations - Caramelized onions as their most famous topping. I went with the Seared Steak ($7.95) and my bf got the Slow Roasted Pulled Pork ($7.95), both with Caramelized onions. I must say that they were very generous on the fillings, including the sauces. I generally like medium-rare steaks, so this was the perfect sandwich with seared meat. I will definitely come back. Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Price: 5/5
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Man. People rave about this place, so it's safe to say that I had pretty high expectations of this place. All of them were met, and then some. I got the pulled pork and brisket sandwiches. Open the wrapping and you're treated with quite a sizable sandwich. The bun is incredible and a beauty just to hold, let alone eat. It squishes into your hand, is insanely soft, and is able to absorb the juices coming out of the meat without becoming incredibly soggy. But onto the meat of this review - both sandwiches explode with incredible flavour when you bite into them. They're very well-seasoned and each bite leaves you wanting more and more. Their sauces really add to the food, and I had to go BBQ sauce and dijon mustard. The hype is real. This is the best sandwich I've had in Toronto, and it'll be hard to top this place as the crown of TO.
google avatar

Tanveer K.

Yelp
The sandwich tasted pretty good the best one is the beef brisket with their homemade bbq sauce I didn't like the pulled chicken it tasted like Tuna fish. The customer service was excellent service was quick sandwich was hot. The beef brisket was so tender it melts I. Your mouth and with the homemade bbq sauce the sauce had a little bit of tang to it I could eat that all day really tasty

Yelp
Oooooooh man oh man...If you're craving for a juicy, finger licking sandwich in the Rosedale area, look no further! Black Camel is The place to go ! Everything is made in house from condiments to meaty fillings. I really like their bread which compliments their juicy and saucy pulled pork. Known for their pulled pork and brisket, everything on their menu looks and tastes amazing ! Tip: They have a loyalty card where if you buy 12 sandwiches , you get one free !

Yelp
This place is literally a hidden gem! I got the pulled pork sandwich and its messy and delicious!! It's a small place but if you're in the area give them a try
