The Best Coffee Shops in Burlington, Vermont - Eater Montreal

"This Church Street Marketplace staple has been serving downtown Burlington for decades, long before any “third-wave” coffee renaissance in town. Its location on the pedestrian thoroughfare ensures a steady clientele, and an array of rustic baked goods alongside an impressive selection of cream cheeses and bagels keeps them coming back. It’s a Burlington stalwart that prides itself on sourcing responsibly-grown beans, and giving back to the community." - Heather Platt

Google
I stopped by Black Cap Coffee and Bakery this morning after someone on my flight recommended it. They mentioned it was at the top of Church Street and hopefully I found the right one, but if not they sure pointed me in the right direction. I ordered a cappuccino and an almond cream croissant, which maybe I haven’t explored the world of croissants enough, but this was the best croissant I’ve ever had, for sure. It was really smooth, moist, and the distribution of flavor was great. When I was there I met Tori and Lauren, who were so kind and helpful. They gave me great recommendations for quick local sights: Oak Ledge, Red Rocks, and Waterfront Park. There was also another staff member working hard on the baking and I didn’t catch her name, but her work clearly speaks for itself. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the service was wonderful. Thank you for making my morning in Burlington such a great one. Highly recommend this spot.

I went to 4 cafes in the neighborhood before I finally found this haven. This place has everything you could want and it tastes good!!! Why did it take me so many spots to find a matcha?? Or almond milk? Thank God for this place. It is very simple and unassuming but the Snickers latte is perfect for my sweet tooth and the MAPLE CROISSANT was insanely delicious. And they have outlets and it’s just what you need for a good pick-me-up. It was just a bit pricey (they didn’t ask me if I wanted a large but it looked like they did? So for an iced latte and croissant cost me $18??? Anyway, for everything else I’ve been through today, I’m just glad this place was open and had good options. Great drinks and great pastries.

Google
If youre coming from out of town and want some place to get a good, sweet latte this is THE spot. They have three sizes to choose from, I got a hot 12 oz caramel latte with whole milk and it tasted like perfection with a little maple leaf on the top. There are many other flavors to choose from and monthly specials. My boyfriend got carrot cake (he loved it, very dense and moist) while I had a churro bun (flakey & gooey). They advertise their in house made pastries as well as locally roasted coffee beans and I believe that effort shows. I believe they deserve much higher than a 4.1.

Stopped here to get a coffee while checking out Church street. The shop is very clean and the staff is pleasant. They made my order right away and served it a smile. I got a cold brew black which was great. My wife got a latte of some sort and she absolutely loved it. There were locals in there working remotely and the music added to the good vibe. Great spot to check out

Google
Black Cap Coffee & Bakery was the perfect breakfast choice for a Sunday morning! We got the breakfast burrito and a breakfast sandwich and both were great! They were also perfect portions when looking for a smaller breakfast for on the go or simply not to eat too much for your morning meal. We shared an almond pastry that was light and quite delightful, along with a drink special that was equally adored. It was slightly busy when we arrived but ordering was easy, everything was ready within 5 to 10 minutes. We were greeted when we walked in the door and the staff was helpful and kind. There are limited inside tables for a couple of people to share, and lots of outside space depending on weather. It's an easy recommendation to make for me. Enjoy!

Google
This is the best croissant I have ever had, i don't thinkIhave ever described any food item as "the best". It's infused with maple syrup and made with a perfectouter crisp. The chocolate croissant is also delicious as well as the lattes and smoothie. Service was great and fast. Just a little on the expensive side, as is everything in NE cities.

Google
I had excellent iced coffee and the most amazing almond croissant I have ever had, even in France! They call it an Almond Cream Croissant and it is flaky, rich, buttery and light all at the same time and just out of this world scrumptious!! I will cry if they don’t have any when I go back again.

Google
I've been to this location as well as the Stowe one multiple times, and have never been disappointed. The staff is always so friendly. The lattes are amazing, and you have to try the maple croissants. They are so delicious you'll end up bringing some home. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Came here during a trip to Burly to see our catamount. She loves Black Cap so we decided to try. She had a chai tea latte and my husband had a coffee. They each had the crumb cake, I had the coffee cake. Large portions enough to save for later or the next day. All was fresh and very good. Only negative from husband (I don't drink coffee) is that it was on the expensive side for what it was. Cute cafe vibe, pleasant workers!

Yelp
Hey everyone, Jake here, let me fill you silly girlies in on a little secret. Almond croissants are boss. And I highly recommend getting them from here because I have only ever had one here. Except one time in Charlottesville, Virginia, where they made them in a wood oven. Wood fired pastries are something we need more of in this world, the beautiful cook of a wood fired pizza, but with a delightful, sweeter taste. Don't come after me guys this is just an idea. Sheesh. Anyways, I don't drink coffee but Charlotte does, I think she liked it, let's find out though! yeah it was good I love pumpkin spice latte so I got that because tis the season but tbh it didn't taste all that pumpkiny. however pumpkin spice does actually taste like pumpkin the fruit that you find in a field. So everything is relative and anyways I also thought it was alright. They also let us do homework there too so yass. Also whoever was on aux was woke as can be. You're telling me we got girl so confusing lorde remix followed by Ethel Cain and Chappell roan while the sun was still rising and the worms were still snaking??? What a time to be young and in Burlington VT. Anyways, stay safe and they also have a great apple crumble thing but I don't remember the name, tell them the Jake and charlotte review sent ya and they will probably do nothing but hey who knows! This review was left by the Charlotte & Jake Review.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I stopped in here one morning on our weekend get away to Burlington. We each got an iced coffee which was great, she got a breakfast sandwich and I got a breakfast burrito. The food was good and it was fresh which is great. The service was also good but I will say I feel like they need some more support. Shortly after we ordered we looked back and there was almost a line out the door. It seemed they only had two people working. One had gone to make the food that we had ordered and the other was taking ordered and trying to keep up with making the coffees as well. The servers themselves did nothing wrong and did great with the manpower they had but I did feel bad at the fact that they seemed so busy. The ambiance was nice and serves as a nice coffee shop/bakery and was the perfect spot to grab a bite and coffee and warm up on a chilly winter morning.

Yelp
We got into Burlington around 4 and walked over to Black Cap for a couple sandwiches before heading down to the lake. It was a Monday about 5pm. I wanted The Dope (applewood smoked bacon, tomato, cheddar, and guacamole) but they ran out of guac. No worries, I ordered the BLT & C (a BLT with cheddar and mayo). My husband had the Classic Grilled Cheese. The service was good and quick. We ate outside in their lovely seating area, enjoying the fresh, tasty food. We liked it so much, we decided to have dinner again the next night (Tuesday) trying other sandwiches. However, when my husband walked in to order at 5/5:30pm, he was told "We're not serving sandwiches at this time." Now, this place is open until 7pm. Their website says lunch is "available all day." So we were disappointed and never went back during our trip. I'd recommend this place as long as you can find sandwiches being served.

Yelp
Black cap makes good lattes and has an interesting assortment of pastries and food offerings for a variety of dietary restrictions. The baristas are always friendly and the vibes are very gentle and quiet. The lunch and breakfast sandwiches are pretty good-- I think they're probably better on the regular bread instead of the gluten free bread, but I like that they offer gluten free bread. They also offer beyond meat sausage Patties which is great. The chia mango puddings are always a great choice. And i love the seasonal lattes they offer. Employees have always been very excited to give me a pup cup for my service dog. Usually they are respectful of boundaries, however one time an employee took me ordering the pup cup as an invitation for them to interact with my SD. They came around the bar while my back was turned and offered him a pup cup while I was ordering-- without asking or acknowledging me.My service dog was actively working, and it's not cool to distract him. I think adults in any type of dining establishment should know not to mess with service dogs.

Yelp
I was here in Vermont for work and went downtown and I like trying local places and tried this place, I like to try teas out for my stay at any place I go to, I don't like coffee but their chai tea was really good. I also got some bakery items as well, the carrot cake was so delicious and moist. The staff was very friendly and it was a clean place. It's so pretty here in Vermont

Yelp
Located on Church Street in Burlington, expect this place to get busy. We went in a lunch and the line got long very quickly. I had the maple latte, which was pretty decent. Also, I ordered a BLT. It was decent, but the bread was very toasted and scratched my mouth. It's just too crispy and hard, and it came to my cold already. My best part was the maple croissant. Flaky and just enough sweetness. I did agree with the other comments about they putting their food in the microwave. This looks very bad and a big minus. Please replace it for a toster or something better for your health. I mean, come on, you are in Vermont. You can do better.

Yelp
The coffee is good. Maybe not the best I've had but it's good. The real reason I wanted to leave a five star review is the service. My wife is celiac. When she asked about gluten free options she was appropriately informed they are not a totally GF environment but they do have GF bread options for breakfast sandwiches. She ordered a GF breakfast sandwich. The young man who helped her was EXTREMELY careful in making her sandwich. He put paper or foil down on every surface he used. He changed gloves multiple times. He was so careful that my wife felt very confident in eating her breakfast. The sandwich was great and she enjoyed her breakfast.

Kaileigh D.

Yelp
So overpriced. My London fog was good, but not worth $7!? Also, not a great atmosphere. It's very blank in there, they didn't put a whole lot of effort into making it look inviting

J G.

Yelp
Came in looking for a vegan breakfast for the following day, something I could take to my hotel and reheat. Nothing worked. Nothing had vegetables. The vegan breakfast sandwich, or whatever it was, had all fake foods and not vegetables. The young man behind the counter acknowledged that their foods lacked vegetables. He then proceeded to recommend a quiche. You do realize vegans don't eat eggs, right? I opted for overnight oats that were in the cold case. $9 for a cup of vegan overnight oats with granola and maple syrup in a separate container. They were good and hit the spot the next day. Maybe it's the fact I don't eat out much, but it seemed all of Burlington is overpriced!

Theresa Y.

Yelp
Over priced for an 8 oz coffee. They staff is rude. Coffee was sub par at best. I don't mind paying the prices but I think they need a training class on how to treat customers. Won't be back!

Vincent P.

Yelp
I'm from New York, so I'm used to high-end baristas at my local cafes, and I even helped provide advice for a barista training company.   The staff is great; it's probably the best coffee menu on Church Street. The staff is highly competent and considerate. It would be an all-around great time if not for the understaffing. If you walk in around 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., you might get one barista servicing long lines of people. It's the kind of faux profiteering you generally see with businesses that want to raise profits without making an effort to be creative.   Cutting staff to only one or two people when you have a line of 20 or more in a small store is a horrible customer experience likely to encourage walkouts. It creates a high stress experience for employees, and that creates high turnover long-term. That kind of cascade leads to decreased quality of service because all the experienced people who know their worth leave. It makes me wonder if upper management has the capacity to run a successful business long-term because the staffing ratio I saw over the last week in the middle of the day is the same I have seen from companies on the verge of sundowning.

Elise P.

Yelp
UM..YES! This place, although expensive like other stores on Church St. is quite delectable. As a picky eater with an overwhelming amount of social anxiety, this place has become my comfort cafe! The workers are so sweet and friendly and know how to make someone feel welcome! The grilled cheese is both appealing in taste and looks with its aesthetic panini grill lines and the chips are so delicious! For the first few weeks, I got an iced latte which did the trick and satisfied my cravings, but since then, I have switched over to their summer special, a Mint Chip Mocha, which satisfies my sweet tooth greatly. The multiple pictures attached below are evidence of my multiple occasions of dining at this establishment. I frequent this place multiple times a week and for as long as I am here I plan to continue doing so! Thank you to the kind workers and their commitment to creating a consistently delicious grilled cheese and coffee! Lots of Love

Yelp
Prefab egg sandwich on an English muffin was disappointing. coffee was good. Nice atmosphere and free WiFi.

Yelp
Even on a July Monday at 5 pm, the Church Street pedestrian mall can be slightly depressing but we needed to stop by to pick up a toothbrush at a drugstore and really wanted an iced coffee Things all round were closing up but Black Cap was open till 7pm Yay! My group had decent hot coffee, a decent iced latte, and a very good Arnold Palmer. The staff is young and polite and tries hard to please and tries to keep up with keeping the milk containers full and the counter tops clean but it's a Sisyphean task when you are understaffed.

Benjamin T.

Yelp
Food and drinks are much overpriced. Upon that, the place automatically charges 10% service fee. Still when making payment customers are asked to pay additional tips.

Yelp
This place has the best food and service. Caroline was an absolute doll. Coming back!

Amy F.

Yelp
Manager is rude and obnoxious to patrons as well as staff,, don't give her your business.

Mari P.

Yelp
Great menu with GF and vegan options. Friendly staff. Easy to read menu and so many choices. Make up your favorite or take one of their latte concoctions. Soft music creates a warm buzz that doesn't overpower conversation.

Matthew M.

Yelp
The service was awful. Even after purchasing an overpriced coffee I was questioned repeatedly by the barista when I asked the code for the bathroom. she looked me up and down and did not believe that I purchased a coffee. I have been to the location on church street many times and have seen families experience the same as I have. Don't even waste your money at this location.

Yelp
Amazing quick stop for coffee and snacks. The flavors they came up with are very interesting. I loved the banana bread here. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Great service, great beverage menu, beer/ale/coffee bean selections are strong! Shame this shop does not have a line down Chruch Street? The server was pleasant and our coffee was outstanding.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
I stopped here to get a almond milk chai tea Latte to start my day. It was a great experience and the staff was very friendly. The chai tea latte was good, but nothing out of this world. If I lived in the area, I would definitely be back to get another.
google avatar

Yelp
Of the four coffee shops nearby that I have tried I have to say this is my favorite one. They have good bakery and food for breakfast as well. The place is bright and well lit and the staff are friendly. There is a patio out front great for people watching, though it is all in the sun. I'd definitely stop back here again and choose this spot out of the other nearby options.

Larry R.

Yelp
Pretty. Awful. Steamed milk too hot. It's not complicated, and it's not easy, but for five dollars, go around the corner to vivid, or up the street to cru.

John G.

Yelp
No. Don't go here. The coffee is served and paper cups that fell apart as soon as the scolding, watery coffee is put into it. The caps don't fit. They said try to press harder. The cup just collapsed. Hand scolded. I used to think that lawsuit about McDonald's and scalding water was baloney but not anymore. There's no need for it and it just ruins the coffee. Got a frittata. It was then microwaved into the paper bag that it came in, so that it was inedible

Yelp
Black Cap has been absolutely lovely every time I've visited! The staff are super friendly and kind, and the coffee is top notch. They also have a wide selection of beers (and some other assorted drinks) and a broad range of insanely delicious baked goods- including lots of gluten-free and vegan options, if I recall correctly! There's a few inside tables, though not too many- it's a much quieter and more cozy alternative to some of the bigger, louder coffee shops in town. Black Cap is the perfect stop on a morning walk, or a great place to sit with a friend and work / study for a few hours. Overall, Black Cap is a great addition to the community, and a bit of a hidden gem- don't miss out on all they have to offer!

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Good latte and great service latte took a bit but was a very good latte would 100% recommend and will say the laddies eyebrows are expectable and the place smells great.

Laura M.

Yelp
As a college student, Black Cap Coffee has become one of my favorite coffee shops in downtown Burlington. I enjoy the flavor of their maple lattes because the rich coffee isn't overpowered by the sweet maple. A symbiotic balance is found between the contrasting flavors. Additionally, they have excellent pastries. Their blueberry gluten free muffin is fantastic, my roommate and I can't even tell its gluten free. Furthermore, staff is lovely. They are kind and welcoming, creating a comfortable environment, even during peak hours. They even give out free day-old pastries costumers during off hours which is extra generous. Blackcap has my heart.

Katrina C.

Yelp
I love the coffee here! And the staff is always cheery! The only downside (and reason it's not 5 stars) is the fact that there is always a line.

Jessica A.

Yelp
Best cup of medium roast and some amazing pastries down town. Excellent staff that are prompt, personable and quick to deliver. I would highly recommend Black Cap to anyone in the downtown area who needs to grab a cup of Joe, or a 4 pack of micro brew to take home after a long day. Excellent service even though staffing is complicated due to Covid-19. Thank you Caroline holding down the fort on a busy morning!

Yelp
best coffee and pastries in burlington!! love this place so much. could spend all of my money here!!

Matt P.

Yelp
Consistently the poorest made coffee in Burlington Vt. The staff is often extremely distracted and all over the place. The food portions are quite small and overpriced for mediocre options. Go anywhere else in Burlington for your coffee, heck even the corner store.

Izzy L.

Yelp
I've gotten lavender and maple lattes from here and they have been super enjoyable! The egg and cheese I got was a sad looking and overpriced, $5 for such a little piece of bread. It would make sense if it was on a bagel, but is unfortunately not. I recommend the drinks though!

Elisa R.

Yelp
We were excited to try this place while traveling ,and it was not enjoyable at all. We spent 70.00 on coffee and baked goods. The coffee was horrible and the baked goods were so dry. It was a waste of money and a trip.

Catherine A.

Yelp
Black caps pastries will complete your day. Aside from their full coffee menu. But to top it off the service is always great and friendly. Tue gentlemen who's last day is today will be missed. He has continuously been a bright happy face in the morning. He made my 8 year old a hot chocolate and he said it made his day. Thanks and be sure to check these guys out
