The 21 Essential Restaurants in Boulder, Colorado

"Eric Skokan doesn’t merely source from local farms — he is the source, with a 425-acre property where he and his wife, Jill, grow more than 200 organic crops; mill their own grains; and raise heritage breeds of pigs, chickens, and more to supply his gem of a contemporary bistro. In fact, his farm is currently serving as Black Cat’s dining room, with dinner served at private tables in the historic blacksmith barn, garden cabanas, or patio pergola. Book the daily three-course dinner, or keep it casual at Skokan’s rustic gastropub, Bramble & Hare, located on Pearl Street Mall." - Rebecca Treon, Josie Sexton, Ruth Tobias, Nisa Sedaghat

Incredible experience! The food, hospitality, and scenery were all outstanding. Also someone in our party had an allergy, and they were well taken care of. We really enjoyed our server, Ingrid, and meeting the chef / owner. Much more than 4 courses - you will not go hungry!

Google
The best dining experience I have ever had🥺 the food was spectacular, the cabanas were intimate and cozy (even on a rainy day, thanks to the private wood burning stove), and the farm setting was so much fun to explore. Highly recommend for a leisurely and unique celebration of a special occasion.

I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at Black Cat Organic Farms in Boulder, Colorado, this past fall, and it was an incredible experience. The landscape was stunning – with rolling hills and a sunflower field that made for the perfect backdrop. The couples day was laid-back yet timely, and the staff did an excellent job keeping everything running smoothly. The farm-to-table meal was one of the best I’ve ever had at a wedding, and the venue felt like an upscale backyard garden party – cozy and elegant at the same time. The couple’s focus on spending quality time together made it even more special. They even had a live band to keep the energy high, and we got some amazing sunset portraits in the sunflower field. Black Cat Organic Farms is both a great place to eat and wedding venue. I highly recommend it for couples seeking a unique, picturesque location for their wedding day!

This place is absolutely incredible and creates a lasting memory. The flavors of each course were a build up to the next course and beautifully thought out. Each plate was explained in great detail before eating and it allows folks to fully experience all the flavors in each bite. Everything is so fresh and the plate presentation was gorgeous. They also graciously accommodate for any diet restrictions. I can’t recommend this place enough and I can’t wait to return!

One of the most incredibly magic dining experiences I have ever had. I have traveled all over the world and eaten everywhere from noodles off a long tail boat in Thailand to Michelin Star Restaurants on multiple continents. This is a one of a kind experience that I have never had replicated anywhere else. Eric's passion for culinary experiences is evident through the entire experience from the arrival, food selections, seating areas, and the service. My whole family felt it was worth every penny and we expect to be back!

Wow! I was able to snag a last minute spot on Friday night for this fabulous experience. We were greeted with cider and butter, as well as beet relish and homemade bread. The atmosphere is so special and different- we lucked out with the best spot. You eat in a little greenhouse/cabin with a wood burning stove. The food was spectacular and each course was more special than the last. I highly recommend this place - amazing for an anniversary, a proposal, or for families too. They accommodated my husband’s dietary needs and the service was great! Thank you Reggie!

From the moment you make the reservation you know this experience is going to be unique and one of a kind. Last night I had the pleasure of dining here and what a truly exceptional experience it was. The service was bar none- in a very “unreasonable hospitality” sort of way. The food and presentation and creativity throughout was first class. Yet the experience went deeper. A real grounding to the land we care for, the food we harvest and the family we share this time with. Black Cat Farmstead is an experience I highly recommend! Enjoy:)

Let me begin by saying that no matter how carefully I choose my words—whether brief or elaborate—I will never fully do justice to the extraordinary dining experience at Black Cat Farm. This isn’t merely a meal; it’s an experience, one that lingers in your memory long after the last bite. I first discovered Black Cat Farm on a warm summer evening in June 2022, captivated by its charm and ethos. (You’ll find some photos from that unforgettable night included.) Sadly, shortly after, the farm faced regulatory challenges that temporarily shuttered its doors. However, last month marked their triumphant return, and they’ve reclaimed their place as one of the most unique dining destinations in the area. The setting alone is remarkable. Guests are seated in one of 10-15 glass bungalows scattered across the farm, each outfitted with a wood-burning stove for warmth during the colder months. These spaces embody thoughtful, heritage-inspired design, complete with soft wool blankets spun from the farm’s own sheep. In the summer, the farm buzzes with life—chickens, ducks, and other animals roam freely, adding to the rustic charm. In winter, the scene transforms into a snowy wonderland, framed by majestic, snow-capped mountains. As for the meal itself, Black Cat Farm offers a dining concept rooted in trust and creativity. There’s no menu to browse; instead, the incredibly talented team crafts a bespoke, farm-to-table feast that reflects the season and the land. Everything is grown, sourced, and prepared on-site, often from plants and trees just steps from your table. Each course is delivered with a detailed explanation of its ingredients and origins, shared with warmth and authenticity. Far from feeling pretentious, this approach highlights the deep care and passion behind every dish. This ethos is best exemplified by the owner himself, who might be driving the tractor in the morning and serving plates in the evening. His presence underscores the hands-on dedication that defines Black Cat Farm—it’s unassuming, genuine, and deeply personal. The food is nothing short of extraordinary. Every dish is an exercise in balance, thoughtfulness, and creativity. The flavors invite you to savor, reflect, and discuss, turning the meal into a shared experience of discovery. The pacing between courses allows time to linger over each bite and appreciate the craftsmanship behind the presentation. There is simply no other dining experience in the metro area that compares. Black Cat Farm is a rare gem, blending innovation, authenticity, and a touch of magic. If you’re seeking something truly special, look no further. Reservations open every Monday on their website, and they disappear quickly—don’t let this opportunity pass you by.

Yelp
Wife and I enjoyed a wonderful 5 course romantic tasting menu here a few months ago -those complex wine pairings were quite memorable, as was the entire presentation experience. This splurge was worth it then. This review is also to mention them again because today, with all Boulder dine in restaurants closed currently for the pandemic, my wife surprised me with a superb 3 course lunch to go (at a fraction for what it really should cost). This take-out simply has to be the best quality food you can buy to go in Boulder. My lamb shank, arancini, and chocolate torte were all exactly what I wanted, served on our dining room table for a fraction of dine in. We will absolutely do this again, much sooner than later. Thanks guys!

Yelp
We drove up to what is now the 'Black Cat Farm', the new concept since the pandemic. I was taken aback by how stunning the location turned out to be. Grass-lands as far as the eyes could see with the soft hills of Colorado decorating the Rockies behind them. Truly a magical scenery. At the place, you preorder the wine/drinks so they can bring it out to this location. If those are not up to par, that's on you. What's on them, however, is what they farm, cook, and bring to the table. Needless to say this was not my favorite part of Black Cat. They started us off with some appetizers: homemade cheese and a pistachio spread. They were OK. It followed a salad, some tartare, that was again nothing that couldn't of come out of my kitchen. They proceeded with vegetables, some more vegetables, potatoes, and a pulled lamb. It tasted like something I could have bought at Trader Joe's and made myself. It ended with an olive oil cake, that was actually delicious. My frustration here is that the best part of about the food were the vegetables and the cake. And for the price your paying, you could afford a plane ticket somewhere with a better place to eat. In our party of four we all left hungry. I was actually surprised when the food stopped coming out. Almost like I had been anticipating it to finally get good. Not sure if this would bother anyone either, but the dogs roamed and begged for food throughout our dinner. It's no longer closed off because the weather is nice, so the two giant furry lads are sitting at the table right with you. I guess the good thing is if the food is bad you've got someone there happy to eat it for you.

Yelp
We had amazing dinner at their farm. The whole experience was magical and delicious. We did not know what we will be served for dinner but we were not disappointed. Loved seeing animals around the farm. And even had one visitor during our dinner. Highly recommend their farm dinner experience!

Yelp
I'm going to offer Black Cat some suggestions, as follows: 1. Being "farm to table" is great. But if something is significantly out-of-season, then don't serve it at all, rather than pretend to serve it. I had the turnip salad, my wife had the beet salad. Both had relatively few turnips (in my case) or beets (in hers) and were instead really just red leaf lettuce salads with beet or turnip accents. For me, that was ok; the lettuce was good, as was the dressing; it just wasn't a turnip salad. For her, it was less good: same pile of lettuce, but the dressing was salty, and a low quantity of beets meant not much sweet for balance. #SaladFail 2. If the server, when he brings the plates, is trained to tell each person what is on their plate ... and cannot remember each item (and there were only two of us--not a whole table of people) then, guess what: your dish has too many items on it. In my case, this meant that an otherwise-delicate quail had been completely overpowered by a strong lamb merguez sausage stuffing, and was surrounded by (at least) parsnips, artichokes, polenta, another, differently flavored sauce in a different corner of the plate, and--our server made sure to note--freshly picked spinach. In my wife's case, same thing, except replace the quail/lamb combo for striped bass, which was the only edible thing on the plate, surrounded by a different collection of vegetables, two competing sauces, and some kind of fava bean fritter that was tasteless. 3. For the love of all that is holy: creme brûlée does not need a whipped cream topping of any kind. It doesn't matter that it's "chantilly" made from mascarpone. Let the creme brûlée stand on its own! It has "creme" in the name, even! Finally: our primary server was lovely and attentive. But the sheepskin or mohair throws on the backs of the couches in the side booths? Those? Yeah, management: they need to be cleaned, in between seatings, because they collect (other people's) hair, and it is gross. In fact, even better idea: along with bringing some editing to your dishes, edit these couch covers out of existence. This place is pricey, but not worth the price.

Yelp
*visiting boulder: go here for wonderful food and farm-to-table dining* Incepted in 2006, black cat bistro was created by a husband and wife, Eric and Jill, who sought to create a unique and sustainable experience for diners of the restaurant. Fast forward to 2019 and they own a 425 acre farm to help meet their goal. Tons of livestock and produce reside there so that they can provide a true farm-to-table experience. So, now to the experience. Truly great. Exceptional service. The setup of the restaurant is very aesthetically pleasing and unique. Many of the chairs have unique touches that complement the farm-to-table experience. There is also open viewing to the kitchen from your seats--I am always a sucker for that. You can really see them prepare many of the dishes, and the care they put into each one. For food and drink, we received three(!) complimentary dishes/drinks. We ordered a meat and cheese board, the heirloom beet salad, and the Duo of Colorado bison. Although the Duo is the main course, and it was totally awesome, the heirloom beet salad was probably the best beet salad I have ever had. Nuts good. Coming back here if I find myself in boulder again. If you're here and you haven't been before, I strongly recommend you change that.

Yelp
The Chef's Tasting Menu? Simply sublime. As we drove back to our hotel, I told my wife, "Shades of Asador Etxebarri." That good. Came here with two of our favorite people of all time, who we rarely get to see. Special evening's deserve a special meal, and BCB delivered. 3.5 hours flew by, interrupted only by superb food and drink, and wonderful service. We sat in a semi-secluded "vestibule"?? at the back of the restaurant, and it was perfect for lively and private conversation. I would guess your best bet for a table is via a reservation versus walk-in, as the restaurant is not that large. The dining experience was world-class. When you are seated, they offer tap or bottled water. The tap water was just fine. The house cocktail list looked worthy of a try, and Tuxedo #2 was a nice twist on a gin martini. The menu can best be described as split in two: tasting menu and traditional plates. They do not list the plates for the tasting menu, and I can't tell you if they will run you through it in advance, though they are clear they will honor/respect any food allergies, etc. While the traditional menu was very appealing, we jumped in and went for the Chef's Tasting Menu w/ Classic Wine Pairings. What a delight from beginning to end. I won't try and do the plates/wines justice in even attempting a description, but the menu was brilliantly organized and beautifully presented. Definitely some surprise pairings along the way, but not one left any of us putting our forks down. From foie gras to rib eye, polenta to lamb, the meal was outstanding in all facets. The wine pairings are a must. Their wine list is remarkably deep, and their sommelier chose some truly superb wines from the world's best regions. My wife works in the wine industry, and she was very impressed with the offerings. The majority of the staff seem to lend a hand, though Julie was our primary server and she was awesome: cheery, knowledgeable, patient and efficient! Drew is the in-house sommelier, and it was a treat to listen to him describe the wine pairings, as well as the background/history of the wineries and their regions. First class. Black Cat Bistro was a delight, beginning to end. A Top 10 Ever dining experience for us. Cheers! RS

Yelp
Unfamiliar with the restaurant scene in Boulder and on a short visit, my "research" indicated that Black cat was one of the best food destination in town. A daily changing tasting menu and a farm to table products convinced me to try it. In a nutshell : GO THERE!!! You will leave happy like I did. The ambiance of the restaurant is very welcoming with soft lighting and a gentle background music. The seating is intimate and very original with deep sofas covered with wool blankets and soft pillows ; each one was different. Our server Sarah was the best : Witty, inviting , knowledgeable, and obviously loving her job: what more can we ask to start our dinner . At $87 for a 6 course tasting menu, the choice was obvious. We had first a pate of country pork with black olive and bergamot purée : 4/5; one of us got a duck substitution: hearty and good. The blanquette of lamb came with roasted carrots , farro and chevre:very good. The goose liver mousse came with fig jam , almonds and tasted as good as it looked. The ancient grain tajarin (ribbon like pastas )were cooked with coconut cream and bolo pork; only issue( good problem to have ??) : big portion but how can we complain about this when restaurants usually will serve microscopic portions with tasting menus!! The scallops were soft , cooked just right and presented with roasted potatoes, smoked goose goat cheese crème and pickled chard stems: one of my favorite dishes. By now , I was pretty stuffed and could not fully enjoy the otherwise delicious leg of lamb with parsnip , winter squash nage and green chili purée that gave the dish a great spicy kick. The desert ( carrot cake with crème anglaise ) was also generously served but maybe the least interesting dish of the night; I would have much preferred a more innovative smaller desert with something refreshing like a sorbet. They brought some small macarons and other little fruit jellies to end a great meal. We had a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino that was reasonably priced and poured by an expert sommelier. I hope that I will come again to Boulder and will certainly come back to the black cat. But do yourself a favor and book a reservation there: you will not regret it!

Yelp
One of the best experiences of my life. I usually do not let many people pair wine for me. Their wine Director is fantastic and he put together a really nice wine pairing for me. They came out and explained the every course. The owner cooks and brings a course to your table and explains it as well. He is fantastic and so is all of his staff. They have the best and biggest farm-to-table farm in the country. One warning, this place is not cheap. But it is worth it. I just wish they had a special night where it was more affordable. Then I would go there more.

Yelp
A great place to dine in with your partner or even celebrate someone who is coming from out of town. Obviously what make this place unique is farm to table aspect of it. According to their story they are the largest farm to table operation in the country. We visited this place on a Saturday around 8pm (reservation is a must for the weekend). The restaurant is a bit small and the fact you can watch the kitchen work makes it entertaining. We decided to go with the tasting menu ($87 per person) and we were happy with our choice at the end! The tasting menu is six courses but we were served seven courses, no complaints. Here is the list of our dishes and my ratings: 1. Tuna sashimi 8/10 2. Duck breast 9/10 3. Fois gras 8.5/10 4. Beef mole 8.5/10 5. Pan seared diver scallops 8/10 6. Tunis lamb 8.5/10 7. Chocolate cake 9/10 All of the dishes were great but the one that really standard out was the second dish, duck breast. Would highly recommend this place if you are visiting Boulder. Visited this place a second time for our first anniversary. Again a great experience and would recommend celebrating here for a special occasion. Even though it was a Tuesday the place was packed when we arrived at 9:30pm. We went with the tasting menu again and it didn't disappoint. Specially enjoyed the bison. Here are my ratings: 1. Salmon and Beets 8/10 2. Tuna and spinach 8.5/10 3. Duck pate and fig 8/10 4. Lamb ragu 8.5/10 5. Scallop 8.5/10 6. Bison ribeye 9/10 7. Carrot cake 8/10

Yelp
This is an amazing restaurant. We did a six course meal with a wine pairing. The food was excellent and the progression of dishes seemed to have a lot of thought in it. The wine pairing was also well done, and many of the wine pairing surprised me unexpectedly. Service was on point and we even ended up talking with the owner for a few minutes, which led to a couple of "try this"es and later he comped is some drinks next door at the B&H. It is pricey. But even at the high dollar amount we paid, I felt every penny was worth it. We left full, drunk, and 100% satisfied. It is now our go-to for special occasions and date night outs.

Yelp
Don't even know where to start - their farm is amazing and seems like it is still coming into its own. There is so much potential here but it is already an evening and experience that you will not forget. Very rustic and as others have said the menu is a surprise. It is very vegetable forward (seemed fitting for the style/evening) but my wife and I left with so many ideas of new ways we want to try to replicate how they prepared carrots, new potatoes, greens, and more. As fresh and local as I think you can get anywhere, and the views/experience was one of a kind. It's tough to get a seat but you won't regret it if you do!

Yelp
This might be one of the best meals I have ever enjoyed! Beautiful setting, attentive service, and the chefs tasting menu with wine pairing...amazing. Every course was delicious and they were also willing and able to accommodate my dietary restrictions (rare when having a set tasting menu). It is an investment, quite expensive, but it is worth it. Go and enjoy this farm to table dining experience for a special occasion. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Excellent fine dining without pretense and centrally located with parking too! Dinner may run $100-300 for two, but it will be a good value. As I approach moving to Boulder, I've found myself very wary of the assurances about how great it is... Fine dining and non-American food are two areas which are well represented but not represented well. It has seemed, much like WFM1 (now WFM2; cum Amazon), they have very good intentions but lack knowledge of and exposure to the primary sources, which would allow one to know what they are trying for: case in point their falafel. But I digress! This 'bistro' might be the finest Restaurant Boulder's got. They do the farm to table well, and creative plates very well without resorting to wasabi raspberry coulis atop polenta (--my favorite moniker for, the confused of Atlanta, who thought: 'oh, let's just mix up exotic stuff we'd never before heard of with stuff we do know (polenta is a euphemism for grits) in a a pretty tourmaline color palette, nd then we'll be bonafide chefs du cuisine!' and the service was impeccable. This is really a 4.5 star rating (ya Im sorry I just couldn't bring myself to award a perfect rating..addressed my concerns directly to the establishment who don't deserve anything such as they to besmirch their reputation.)

Yelp
My absolute favorite dining experience in all of Colorado. The Chef's Tasting Menu is the only way to go. Every dish is a surprise and always spot on delicious. Locally farmed, expertly prepared, and service that is the best around. The Black Cat is hands down our first choice location for any celebration.

Yelp
Wonderful spot. From the moment I walked in I knew I was in for a treat. The dining room is intimate and cozy with great lighting and cool seating. I would definitely recommend the chefs tasting menu with the wine pairing. Seven courses of fresh, flavorful, goodness. The wine pairings were perfectly executed. As for service, well it was top notch. I could tell that everyone including the chef/owner really take pride in Black Cat. It shows.

Yelp
I have been to Black Cat many times since it opened. There are a couple of things that have been consistent over the years: the food (divine), the wine menu (extraordinary) and the intimate seating options (love, love the love seats on the wall for super cozy, romantic dates. The menu changes a lot so I won't say anything about that other than they really do an exquisite job with the food, much of which comes from the Black Cat Farm and other local farms in Colorado. Warning though: it is a very sloooow meal. That is the reason we often times don't go. I'm not often up for a 3 hour meal (which is how long their tasting menu takes). The big complaint I'll offer you is the staff is mostly great but you get the occasional snob or uptight staff member and the owner is not inclined to do anything about it. Although that doesn't dissuade us from going, it is a flag that is worth mentioning to you. All in all, I think it is one of the best meals and ambience you will find in Boulder (way better than Frasca). It is definitely the best upscale, romantic date.

Yelp
It is amazing. The food is great. The service is great. The tasting menu is extremely worthy. Such low price ($87 for 7 courses with complimentary bread and dessert) and such high quality. Very satisfied. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
Stopped by the farm stand after a trip to the reservoir. Such nice people and what a menu! My friend came home with farm eggs and I scored a couple of pints of Baba Ganoush. I left it thaw over night and I'm devouring it as I write this... I had to take a minute to breath and mention how happy I was to have purchased TWO of these delightful treasures! Thank you folks for offering such good stuff!!!!

Yelp
I think I died and gone to foodie heaven. Somebody please pinch me and tell me this reality! Black Cat is the largest (or one of the largest) farm-to-table restaurants in the world. Please fact check me, I was slightly inebriated when the server gave the monologue. Nonetheless, chef Eric Skokan and his wife have a 130 acre farm located right outside of Boulder that grows both livestock and seasonal produce. This is the key element that sets them apart from the rest. Nothing beats fresh, home grown ingredients. I was accompanied by 4 fabulous ladies as we were celebrating our annual "ladies only weekend". We opted for the 6 course tasting menu with wine paring, which is a "black box" until the courses are served. Don't be alarmed, most of the course are smaller a la carte offerings. Just after we finished one course, we would say that the next couldn't get any better...but it did. Again and again and again. Yes, please, and thank you. Servers were on point, wine was delicious, and I loved the open kitchen layout. I love watching the chefs preparing the food. And I get excited when I know my course is being plated. I am not a local and I wish Skokan had a restaurant like Black Cat in Southern California. But it is just a short 3 hour plane ride away! I would even go as far to say it is worth booking a trip just to dine at Black Cat.

Yelp
I should start with the warning that this place is extremely expensive. However, the food is art that melts in your mouth. The entire staff works hard to give its patrons a very special experience from start to finish. They consider the every tiny flavor combination and paring. We love to go once a year or so and the menu is different every time as they try to use seasonal ingredients.

Yelp
I had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever seen this afternoon April, 28th at the Black Cat produce stand off of Jay Road. After pulling up to the stand, my girlfriend and I waited behind an older married couple talking with the two female Black Cat workers rather jovially. It was a continued conversation they were having after their purchase. After waiting for the pleasantries to discontinue, my Chinese girlfriend and I walk up to purchase some root vegetables. Immediately, the heavy set lady glared at us and refused us service because we didn't have on masks. The funny thing is they were just so pleasant with the white couple ahead of us who had an armful of food purchased from them and no masks on. That couple wasn't refused service. The heavy ladies (who I can only describe as this because they had masks on and I can't think of any other way to detail them) talked on end with this couple without masks on without any look of concern or condemnation. The second my girlfriend and I walked up their tune changed. I mentioned what about the unmasked white couple who you just gave service to, and the heavier set woman (who was the one who refused service) said she forgot to "remind" them. She happened to remember to curtly demand we wear masks the second the other couple left, but during her long, intimate conversation with the other couple, she forgot to mention to "remind" them to wear them to get service. This blatant act of racism was disgusting. I will never again take anyone to Black Cat or their ancillary restaurant Bramble and Hare. I am more than shocked from the whole experience.

Yelp
Had a romantic date with my wife. Super cozy and nice, wait staff was so attentive and nice. But the real showcase is the food. Some of the best we have had in a while. Will be back for sure

Yelp
This is a Boulder hidden gem. Very inconspicuous on the outside, once you're in, you'll find yourself in a cozy but modern cafe with French and European inspiration. The wine list is extensive, and Black Cat prides itself on having great wine selection and pairings for you to enjoy. We were out to dinner with my fiance's parents, and we all opted to try the chef's tasting menu, which is a journey through the best dishes they have on the menu. Each course was so creative, both in appearance and taste. We also tried it with wine pairings, and the wines they chose went amazingly well with the meal. They were also wine styles I hadn't necessarily had before, adding some surprise and creativity to the experience. The chef also came out to say hello a few times during the meal, and he was such a friendly and welcoming guy; you could tell he and his family really had passion for what they were doing. Definitely hit this place up if you have a special occasion coming up & happen to be in Boulder!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went here for his 30th birthday. We did the tasting with the "classic" wine pairings, and it was spectacular. I would take some time to describe all the dishes (it is 6 courses) but that wouldn't do much good since their menu constantly changes, but I'm pretty sure your dishes will be just as spectacular. Highlight of the night was definitely the sommelier -- Logan! That guy is passionate about wine. One of the courses featured a Black Cat original wine that he made himself, and it was our favorite wine of the night. This place is expensive, so be prepared to spend a lotta dough. Farm-to-table restaurants do require expensive ingredients so it's to be expected. They did serve us an additional course (with a top off on our wine) which is pretty bomb. I'll definitely be coming back here when I have more dough ;-)

Yelp
Last week we splurged on the premium wine pairing menu option for our anniversary. This was a 7 course meal with pre selected wines that were paired relative to the courses served. The courses were excellent and the wines were of very high quality, perfectly paired as well. We started light with shrimp mousse with shaved black truffles served with a glass of Zudugari Txakolina, a white wine from the Basque region of Spain. Then they served a salad with a Brut Rose Ettore Germano from Italy. Then on to a goose liver mousse with an incredible Robert Weil 15, Riesling from Rheingau Germany. The next course was an awesome lamb ragu served with a Scylla old vine Zin from Lodi, Ca. Wow! Then we moved on to a broiled sturgeon (that's right!) served with a glass of Failla 17 Pinot Noir, from Sonoma. Coming into the home stretch, we were served lamb chops with a glass of Venta La Vega, Garnacha, Ternario 2, from Alicante, Spain. And finally, a sweet desert surprise, served with a sip of Conte Vistarino Costiolo, Sangue De Guida, from Italy. This is by far the best dining experience we have ever had in Colorado, and well beyond. Black Cat serves only locally grown meat and vegetables that are literally farm to table, from locations only a few miles north of the restaurant. Their wine list is very impressive too. The service was excellent, the owners are good people, and the cost reflected the high quality food and wine that was served. Well worth the price. This place has nailed it!

Yelp
I got caught in the Broomfield area for a business trip after the "Bomb Cyclone" and had to wait a few days before returning to Los Angeles. I toured the amazing Clyfford Still Museum and then looked for a wonderful place to have dinner. I then found Black Cat Bistro and the reviews and decided to see what fine Boulder dining looked like. I have eaten in 2 and 3 star Michelin restaurants - in Manhattan, LA, and Joel Robuchon in Vegas. I would out Black Cat on par with some two star restaurants. I did not go with the tasting menu - a three hour dinner dining alone doesn't appeal. I started with the foie gras, a treat I cannot enjoy in California. It's one of the best dishes I've had in a very long time, truly sublime. I then dined in the pork and found it incredibly flavorful and moist. I asked for the mole on the side and found I enjoyed it more without the sauce. I also found my favorite varietal on their wines by the glass list and savored my Vouvray. The room is cozy, charming and evokes the wild west. My waiter was very professional and too care of me.

Yelp
Amazing, amazing, amazing!! Literally, from start to finish, this place nailed it on every front. From the waitress & customer service (shout out Sara ), to the food and to the sommelier (shout out Logan ), to everything else in between was truly impeccable! Not to mention whole staff went absolutely above & beyond! Obviously, I HIGHLY recommend this place! I could go into so much more detail on many aspects of my dining experience tonight, but I doubt you want to read a full novel right now... so I won't If you're in Boulder & are able to eat here, DO IT!

Yelp
One of my favorite places in boulder. The tasting menu was excellent and the wine pairings were well done if a bit unusual. The service was also great. The ambiance was gezellig. The bar was well stocked. I was comfortable and happy the entire evening. Each course was a treat.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I gave each other a trip to Boulder for Xmas last year (traveled in mid-Feb), and this reservation was our foodie-splurge of the trip. I was initially a bit surprised at the exterior appearance of the restaurant (it's right in downtown Boulder, on a busy-ish street-- not overly charming at first blush), but the interior ambience did not disappoint: warm, lovely, Art-Deco inspired. Not stuffy at all, very inviting. That same inviting feel was absolutely found in the wait staff-- friendly, knowledgeable, responsive. Service was well-timed for fine dining in courses (we both had the tasting menu with standard wine pairing). On the few occasions that I had additional questions about a course or pairing, the server (there were many; theirs is the model of multiple servers/multiple tables, not a single server assigned to your table) appeared genuinely interested and excited to share info. As I view a meal like this as more of an *experience*, rather than mere food intake, this was important to me. Food was exceptionally lovely-- I was expecting beautiful presentation and thoughtful preparations, and the tasting menu delivered both. My boyfriend and I both felt that portion size was on the large side for a tasting menu-- by the end, he had to help me out with finishing a course or two. We both enjoy wine, and the standard pairings were wonderful-- since we didn't choose the "premium" pairings, I wondered if the servers would be less excited or give less info about them, but that was definitely not the case. As I said, given the price, this was certainly a splurge for two schoolteachers, but we had a truly wonderful time at Black Cat Bistro and considering all that goes into a fine dining experience (anticipating it, dressing up a little, tasting new flavor combinations, enjoying each other's company, a little wine-loveyness), it was definitely worth it.

Yelp
I have been a few times, and I always have such nice service here. But the last time I went, my date and I ordered cocktails to start, and they took more than 15 minutes. There was only one bartender, but I did not see many cocktails leaving the bar. It didn't really matter, our meal was lovely, but that was definitely something that needed attention. The menu is small, pricey, and changes seasonally. The only thing I do not like about that is you can go and have something you really really enjoyed but when you return the items have changed. The place is smaller and feels intimate. Great place for a date or a celebration.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here for awhile based on a recommendation. Tonight we went all in! Be sure to make a reservation because the place isn't big and will definitely fill up. Everything they do is fresh and the definition of farm to table. We did the tasting menu which is $72/person and 6 courses plus a dessert course. All of the portions were perfect for tasting and everything was delicious. It was so well balanced and the flavors were on point. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We mentioned a few things we didn't like in the beginning and didn't have any issues. Also, if we were still hungry after the 6th course, they would have prepared more for us! By the end we left incredibly satisfied and full. The owner served us our first course and explained the dish and how it was prepared. This was overall a fantastic evening. From start to finish everything was well thought out and enjoyable. If you appreciate good food and service and are prepared to pay a good price for excellent quality, come here!

Yelp
We love to come here to celebrate special occasions and Black Cat is always consistently good. The service is impeccable -- the servers are knowledgeable and attentive. The food execution is solid, but I agree w/ a previous reviewer that the dishes are kinda busy and with whoever the recent chef is, the style is a little more funky and crazy than it has been in the past. And oddly enough, the same sauce "smear" was on at least three dishes, which is kind of weird (and LAZY). Also agree that the "fur" throws at the cozy table by the bar (my favorite place to sit) is a bit skeezy and unsanitary. I distinctly remember having a conversation w/ my hubs about lice.

Yelp
Black Cat is one of the most incredible dining experiences I have had. I opted for the Chef's Tasting Menu. After specifying dietary restrictions/preferences, we were provided with 6 fantastic selections, each accompanied by a brief discussion from the chef and owner, Eric Skokan. Eric is far from pretentious and gave great backgrounds on not only each dish, but many of the component ingredients - vegetables from his own farm, meats selected from a neighbor's ranch. He even took notice of our curiosity towards some of the ingredients displayed in the open kitchen and taught us how to make some of the ingredients ourselves! If you do the Tasting Menu with at least two people, I suggest opting for Wine Pairing option as well. The extensive wine menu is a joy as are the seasonal craft cocktails. Definitely check out Black Cat if you are in Boulder and looking for a very special, un-rushed experience. I have had the opportunity to dine in some of the best restaurants in New York, Boston, London, Paris, Munich, Berlin, Barcelona, Singapore, Tokyo and elsewhere. Black Cat will remain among my top dining experiences.

Yelp
We reserved a table for 4 to celebrate a good friends Birthday. We got to the restaurant just as it was opening at 5:30 pm and were seated right away in a comfortable table against the back wall. We put our guest of honor in a spot where she could see the kitchen and watch all of the prep going on during the meal. Service was spot on. Our drink orders were taken quickly and a moment later a basket of focaccia bread and olive oil showed up. We had a few questions about the menu, and were told about the farm to table subsistence that the restaurant was known for. We were delighted with the chef's amuse bouche, a small nibble of goat cheese with arugula. Wonderful taste and presentation. After enjoying our cocktails, our server appeared to take our orders. My wife and I decided to split a beet salad, and the chef plated it for us, which was very nice. We ordered the duck foie gras as an appetizer and cured trout for the table. Our entrees were a lamb trio, with a very nice two rib chop, lamb ragout and a small shoulder loin. I had the scallops with PEI Mussels. The Black Cat had a variety of wines by the glass and since I was driving I decided to only have one. I picked a Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc, which was outstanding. Sharon decided to switch from a martini to a gimlet and said it was terrific. Lime mixed well and not too much vodka to overpower the fruit. Service continued around the table, really efficiently, with used plates disappearing and new silver arriving effortlessly. The hostess, our waiter and a busser pitched in for each other so we never felt that we had to wait for any part of the service. The food arrived and it was superb. Scallops cooked perfectly, and the mussels were covered in a light tomato sauce with mixed vegetables including fresh spinach and turnips or parsnips that offered a lovely texture and crunch. Sharon's lamb, ordered rare, actually arrived that way with a lovely garnish. Yummy. After the meal, we wrapped it up with a piece of bread pudding, and a very good espresso for the drive home. The meal wasn't inexpensive, but the food and the service were exquisite. If you are looking for a wonderful experience the Black Cat Bistro offers exactly what you want.

Yelp
This place is still going strong. What amazed me on my most recent visit was that they've been doing this for 11 years and still creating amazing experiences with impeccable attention to detail. The dinner was amazing. Do the tasting, do the wine pairing, you'll be delighted you did.

Yelp
I took a group here for dinner not long ago. No one had tried it, and I was attracted to the fact it wasn't one of the tragically hip places to eat in Boulder. Our party of 8 arrived and were met as if we were long-lost friends of the restaurant. We were seated promptly and given drinks. We were here for the evening: drinks, appetizers, dinner, dessert. Our servers were attentive and very well informed about the menu and fresh ingredients. We were never made to feel rushed, but were welcomed to enjoy our evening. All enjoyed their selections. The Black Cat seems to fly under the radar in Boulder; the food and ambiance are superior to most of the "in" dining experiences in town. The location is a bit weird, and you can't be "seen" dining here (from the sidewalk) but you won't find a better dining experience in Boulder.

Yelp
Free range animals are great, but not if they are cooked poorly. This place sells you on their 'happily' raised, local farm produce but does not deliver on any good eats. 36 hour braised pork shoulder was bland, a shame for a 36 hour preparation! The 'slow cooked' lamb was basically lamb jerky, with long stringly pieces of dried out lamb mixed in with globules of lamb fat and bones. The entire meal took 2.5 hours due to SLOW service, ultra slow waitstaff and an overall lack of organization. They had to comp out appetiziers without us even asking, due to the sloooow service. Another poor attempt at a Colorado restaurant.

Yelp
Black Cat is truly an exquisite farm to table dining experience. It's located just off Pearl Street so not everyone knows about this gem. We found it about five years ago at the Denver International Wine festival. We usually choose to dine here on special occasions like Anniversaries or Birthday's. Chef Skokan creates masterpieces using ingredients brought in from his own farm. The quality is absolutely top notch. The menu changes day to day due to that days harvest. Unbelievable!! They offer an extensive wine list that includes some wonderful wines from all over the world. We even had a few amazing wines from our very own Colorado. The Chefs Tasting Menu is the way to go. They surprise you with about six courses. Then you can purchase a wine paring for each course. They ask if you have any allergies and make sure you are completely satisfied. Their Foie Gras Mousse is one of our favorite items on the menu. I also loved the Colorado Striped Bass. You cannot go wrong with anything that they bring you. If you are looking for an amazing meal that offers farm to table freshness, you need to make your way to this adorable little bistro.

Yelp
My husband & I were very lucky to walk into bar seats last weekend at 8 pm. We were planning on trying a new restaurant up the street, but it hadn't opened yet, so we stopped by on the off chance they could sneak us in. Lady Luck was on our side! We enjoyed 7 courses of the finest food we have ever tasted. I actually liked meats I generally hate & my husband who HATES fish loved both the ahi tuna and other fish dish. We also loved our seats which afforded us an excellent view of the chefs working in the kitchen. If you can do bar seats, do it! Five stars!

Yelp
Came here with my in-laws on their last meal before heading out of town. I've had it on my list for 2 years now so was happy to finally get the chance to go. It's tucked away a bit with no real obvious signage so look into the windows to find it. It is about 3 doors down from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory on 13th. Parking is a bit difficult, but the Walnut street garage isn't too far away. We were seated at a table with chairs on one side and a loveseat on the other - a bit odd but comfortable if you don't mind not having a back on your seat (leaning back on the loveseat means it's too hard to reach the food). The beverage manager (or maybe just sommelier?) is an old friend of DH's so they enjoyed catching up and we may have gotten a bit extra special treatment with descriptions and information but I believe if you have questions, anyone can ask and get more information. DH decided to go all out and got the 9 course with pairings. The rest of us ordered apps and entrees. We were also given an amuse bouche to begin. Bread was ok, although nothing special - do get the olive oil and ask for balsamic vinegar instead of the butter. I had the fois gras on toast to start - this was quite good and the accompanying bits were delightful. I then enjoyed the quail for my main - very very good and almost like ground and restuffed. Bits of liver were discovered and enjoyed. For my drink, I had a Witch's Brew (I think?) that was great, although very strong. The other foods were also good, with some surprising choices and others being not enough as I could've eaten much more of it! A special ginger beer cocktail was prepared for my MIL so do ask or let them make you something special instead of just soda. We arrived for a 6:15p reservation and didn't leave until just after 10p so give yourself plenty of time for the meal, especially if you are doing multiple courses. My cons: Seating was a bit odd for relaxing No privacy as the place is very small and thus you could hear other orders, descriptions of plates (hard to be surprised), etc Courses are the same for 4,6, and 9 options so if one person gets the 6 and one the 4, you'll really have 4 courses in common plus two others. For this reason I recommend only one person getting the tasting menu and the other ordering off the menu for the most variety.

Yelp
My husband and I went to Black Cat last night for Denver's Restaurant week. It's been on our list to try for a while now but the final impetus to go was the opportunity to try three courses at a discounted price. Immediately upon entering, we really liked the unique space. It feels homey with an open kitchen and panels of fabric seperating tables along the wall. We were seated in the main area next to the kitchen which in this case was a fun way to watch the cooks, chef and waitstaff. The staff were all wonderful and attentive even though the restaurant was packed. We ordered an appetizer from their regular menu in addition to the 'restaurant week' menu because it looked to good to pass up. The farmer cheese gnocchi with lamb bolognase did not disappoint. Root vegetables and shredded lamb mixed with perfect pillow gnocchi started the night off well. For our second appetizers (yes, we pigged out a bit but it was worth it!), I ordered the lamb tagine and my husband ordered the scallop with the carrot gratin. We both enjoyed our own dishes immensly, however, didn't care for each others which speaks to personal taste, not the food itself. My main dish was the semolina dumplings in a thyme cream sauce with root vegetables and spinach. My only complaint about this dish is that I would have liked more mushrooms. I asked for more bread (which by the way was also wonderful) to sop up every drop of sauce that I could. My husband ordered the fig glazed pork shoulder on polenta, which was the best polenta either of us have eaten. Dessert was fairly good for me and wonderful for my husband. I ordered the bittersweet chocolate cake with pomegranate ice cream and my husband ordered the carrot cake with maple panna cotta. Not being a huge fan of dessert (I prefer a piece of good chocolate and an espresso), they were good but next time I'll save the calories. Overall, a wonderful dining experience and one that we will be repeating.

Yelp
I came here for my birthday last night. This tiny little restaurant is tucked in off of 13th between Pearl and Walnut. The decor is extremely eclectic; you might even say "odd". Some walls are Tuscan-style plaster, some are rough hewn, barn siding type wood. All the egresses are surrounded by hammered metal and the lighting is courtesy of horizontal, probably homemade, "chandeliers". I started with an excellent Cosmopolitan complete with black cat rim-dangler (very cute). The chef sent over a tiny plate of nibbles while we were waiting for our starters. It was really good (matchstick apples, cheddar cheese and walnuts). The menu changes frequently so don't expect to be able to order anything you hear about on Yelp, but we had two excellent starters: Chinese BBQ Pork salad with cucumbers and cilantro with a tangy sesame dressing and a duck confit with grilled peaches and a ginger sauce. These two starters were really excellent; I could have had either one for dinner and been really happy. The chef sent us each a salad prior to receiving our entrees. It entailed radicchio, hazelnuts and marinated tomatoes. While I appreciated the gesture, the salad wasn't very exciting, and half the table got some very salty bites that ruined it for them. Our entrees were excellently prepared but the 2 that I helped eat were not as excellent as I had expected after such amazing starters. I ordered lavender honey roasted duck breast, with potatoes au gratin and haricot verts. The duck was very tender and perfectly cooked, however, I wonder whether they forgot the lavender honey. The au gratin seems like it was forgotten as well, the potatoes were simply giant unseasoned cubes. I had to ask for salt and pepper to make them remotely tasty. The second entree, lemon risotto with braised pork shoulder, was very lemony and tasty with frizzled shreds of pork tossed in. Unfortunately you couldn't really taste the pork, either because it was so crunchified or because the risotto was so intense. Despite each having their virtues, I wouldn't order either of them again. There are two arenas in which Black Cat loses points: Spirits and Happy Hour. The wine list was incredibly overpriced, with a glass of (nothing special) wine starting at $9, and a bottle (or half, they were mixed without labeling) starting at $28. The martinis were each $9.50 which prevented me from having another. The happy hour is fairly non-existent from what I could gather... no tapas or food deals, only a bottomless glass of wine, which, for reasons I have already explained, means you may just get your money's worth. AS a new comer to the Boulder dining scene, Black Cat seems to have made a pretty good debut, although I think some kitchen and entrepreneurial tweaking is still in order to get it just right.

Yelp
The atmosphere is cozy yet not intimate... good for the business dinner I was on. This is a fine dining experience that easily meets my New York standards. There's a frantic pace about you as there is a huge window into the kitchen, with chefs laboring to put together gourmet dishes. A server stands at the window, screaming "Hands" to call over all the other servers. bringing food to the patrons in waves. We came in without reservations with a party of 4, on a weekday, and there was no wait. I noticed a young kid, early teens, working as a chef there. Boy, that kid knew how to make some food. I had duck pate, a scallop with duck prosciutto and butternut squash, and sturgeon. Sturgeon! I haven't seen that anywhere else, not even in New York. Sturgeon is delicious! There are great cocktails here as well: I got the Hanuman, which was gin with chai syrup.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in Boulder. Great service and great food. I enjoyed another post from a Yelper on this page: "This place is better than Frasca in my opinion. So creative and hearty" Agreed

Yelp
Well-deserving of high praise. Amazing food, locally sourced when appropriate (not when it's diver scallops, oysters, or caviar), plus kind and attentive service. Recently went to the New Year's Eve seven course tasting. Had a lovely meal from Eric and his team. Thank you!

Yelp
We had a reservation for a party of 4 on a Friday evening. We were seated promptly, and had a nice private table in the back of the restaurant. We started off with ordering a round of cocktails and eventually ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings. Unfortunately, we had no cocktails after 20 minutes for some strange reason. Our first course then came out without the wine pairings, so we're sort of confused at this point as the service was definitely lacking. I pulled the manager over to our table (I think his name was Michael?) and explained the situation. He apologized, and to make the situation right, he made the first course complimentary, so we would end getting 7 courses instead of 6. He also ended up upgrading some of our tasting wine to the premium selection ($25/person savings). We were very happy with how they corrected the situation. As everyone else has said, the food was absolutely fantastic. The pork sausage (that was made that morning) was some of the best sausage I have had the pleasure of tasting. The pairings also paired just wonderfully with all of our dishes that we had. We also really enjoyed that the owner/chef came by our table and explained all of the dishes. Overall, I would definitely recommend the restaurant. They really set the standard for "farm to table".

Yelp
We've hit several of the "best restaurants" in Boulder, and this is at the top of the list... so far. We made reservations via Open Table and lucked out, receiving the private booth at the back of the dining room. Each of us did the blind tasting menu - 1 premium wine pairing, 1 standard. Everyone in our party left satisfied. In fact, the servers went out of their way to ensure we were "full." This resulted in my husband being given an additional course of lamb - which he LOVED, and I couldn't believe he finished. Middle courses were unexpected and dazzled our group. First course and dessert (if I'm going to critique) were the weakest of the bunch. Because we had the luxury of trying both the premium and standard wine pairing, I'd recommend the standard. The wine was excellent and didn't warrant the up charge. Service was impeccable. There was a slight delay with wine service at one point and the sommelier apologized profusely - and poured a little more on the final pairings. If you're looking for a restaurant for a special occasion or a fancy place for those who think CO food doesn't stack up, Black Cat Bistro won't disappoint.

Yelp
The Black Cat isn't a casual drop-in place. Seating is limited and the food is expensive and the meals take a while to complete. But it's all more than worth it for fresh field-to-fork goodies, out of the ordinary, exquisitely prepared. We've done a la carte in the past, but the chef's tasting menu is a spectacular way to go, especially with the wine pairings (and, yes, there's even a distinct difference between the regular and premium wine pairings). It took us over three hours this last time, and we enjoyed every minute of it, small portions but rich and flavorful, an eveing neither dawdling nor rushed, leaving sated and mildly inebriated when all was said and done. Definitely a locale for special events and best of friends and family.

Yelp
Drew and Sarah were phenomenal!!! Awesome food and experience. Exceptional service- Chef even came out to table to explain how some menu items were cooked!!! Highly recommend!!!
