Best Restaurants in the AUC Near Spelman, Morehouse, and Clark Atlanta University | Eater Atlanta

"This intimate Black-owned coffee shop is a great place to load up on caffeine while studying for an exam or casually meeting up with classmates and friends. Here you’ll find standard coffee beverages on the menu, along with specialty drinks like the Portuguese in Love espresso latte made with honey, caramel, and vanilla, named for the classic Teena Marie song. Grab a BEC in the morning paired with a cortado, followed a grilled cheese or chicken pesto sandwich with a lavender and chill latte in the afternoon." - Mike Jordan

I’m from out of town and found this spot via a Google search and OMG! The metropolitan is amazing with a bit of sweet and a bit of spicy, perfect combo. The lavender & chill latte was perfect too, a nice flavor of lavender that’s not too sweet. Definitely worth the visit!

I stopped by Black Coffee ATL and had a great experience! Mia at the counter was super friendly and helpful. She took the time to walk me and my girlfriend through different coffee options and helped us pick something we ended up loving. The pastries were fresh and really good too. Great vibe, great service, and definitely worth coming back to! Highly recommend.

The barista is very sweet and a cute boy. He made us two recommendations, we took both and they were delicious, brown sugar baby and dear mama. The atmosphere and outdoor vibe is also really good. I am so glad we made out coffee stop here as our last evening in Atlanta.

Stumbled across Black Coffee ATL on my walk on the West Side of the beltline and thought I'd give it a try. Was warmly welcomed and since I mentioned it was my first time there, I was given recommendations. I ended up going for the Matcha Mango lemonade; super refreshing! Also ordered the "Chicken Pesto Situation" which was solid. Met Marcus who was so inviting to their Thursday night open mic night. Happy to do a repeat visit on my walks to try new things!

EDITED: Took family here 3 days after I visited it for 1st time. I stand at the register for about 2 minutes while someone was in the back. I say "hello" to notify them a customer is here & they call out "just a minute & I'll be with you". I proceeded to wait there few minutes before she (barista) appears. She walks past the register & gave some customers food. When she felt my eyes on her, she said "just a minute & I'll be with you". At this point I just ask her if there are any more croissants & she's says "yes, but I have a few orders before you so your going to have to wait". There were 3 people in there on their laptops. She could've at least taken our order. Our interaction was terse, she looked flustered, so we left immediately & went to Cafe Bartique. ORIGINAL: Stopped by on a whim because I wanted coffee, wi-fi & didn't feel like going to initial destination. This black coffeehouse is on the backend of apartments (The Vivian). I was first customer at 8am & the barista informed me about parking app (so I wouldn't get a ticket) & offered a water. I ordered caramel latte (medium; $8). It was fresh, hot, aromatic, & robust. It took him a second to get it to me (since I came in directly up on opening hours) so he offered me a croissant. To my surprise it had a light jam on the inside; it was buttery, flaky, soft, & good. Perfect background in the music selection (eclectic mix of 60s-90s soulful RnB/soft funk). Black art everywhere made you stop your lapwork & admire. Later on I went back to read outside; made the morning perfect. This establishment is a close 2nd to Cafe Bartique for black coffeehouses in this area (Cafe Bartique >> 404 Coffee).

The vibe is honestly really nice and the ice that they put in the drink is pretty awesome too. Maya is awesome and is great. Since I didn’t see the prices of the specialty lattes I was definitely a little shocked when I saw a large latte was 9 ish dollars. I think that was a little much considering I got multiple drinks.

1st time visiting and I regret not coming sooner. The customer service was on point! I loooove to be greeted when I enter a business and the staff was busy fulfilling other orders. I didn’t mind because the vibes relaxed me and was definitely my style/type of place. The Bodega sandwich was over the top delish (we ate it so fast didn’t even take a picture lawd lol) The blueberry muffin melted in my mouth! Nooooo other coffee shop has been able to make my basic black coffee with cream like this. I experimented and had toffee nut flavor added and loved it. My daughter had an iced brown sugar baby latte and she said it is definitely doing what it’s supposed to do! Yes indeed this business will succeed. 10 out of 10!
