Great little inconspicuous restaurant with a warm and inviting atmosphere. This is one of the most unique restaurants in Texas with simple, rugged, yet classy decor. The whole place is very inviting. We had the Brussels sprouts and focaccia and ricotta as appetizers and both were fantastic. There was a few different choices between pasta dishes and steaks. The menu was simple but well thought out. They had some of the best and most reasonably priced cocktails with both classics and their own renditions of well known drinks, the pear martini was my favorite. I recommend calling or texting at least the day before for a reservation. The bar is open seating and you can walk in but I didn’t see anyone there for the duration of our meal.

The steak was incredible! Service was excellent and had a romantic vibe.

My wife and I drove down from Highland Village for the 4th weekend. I have to say, this place is fabulous. Everything was on point. Excellent pear martinis. Fantastic appetizers. Chef JR was fantastic. This place is too good and too expensive for this community.

Headed back from a road trip, a friend recommended Rancho Pizzeria and Black Cur in Coleman as I went through. They have the same owner. I didn't think I would have an opportunity to try Black Cur as they don't open until 5 however, it was 5 when I wrapped up my snack next door so popped over. It was said I had good timing as reservations are recommended at this quaint, higher end restaurant. I sat at the bar and started with a dirty martini. I will say, it was not my favorite but not bad. Bartender and other staff I interacted with were so friendly and professional!!! Answered questions, made recommendations...just really good people who appear to enjoy what they are doing. That was a positive addition to the experience. I was hoping for the Beef Tartar I had seen on the online menu however they no longer have it. While sipping my cocktail in this perfectly lit space, admiring the atmosphere and decorations, saw some folks with GIANT biscuits followed by their meal with amazing looking fries. I LOVE fries! I knew I was not there to 'finish' a meal but needed to try some food and wanted something more unique so I ordered the Broken Arrow Nilgai. Its an 8oz Korean-spiced antelope leg filet w/pecan pesto and bread and butter pickle shallots on top. I ordered mine medium rare. Of course I added an order of fries! Nilgai first....OUTSTANDING! Cooked perfectly and just melts in your mouth! The pesto was not heavy on acid which was great as the shallots balanced everything perfectly! Such an AMAZING dish! Definitely recommend and would order again! Fries. I was slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, they were definitely good. I happen to prefer my fries natural. I wouldn't say these were coated however almost like a quick dusting of flour or corn starch to give them an extra crispy bite. I ended with one final cocktail, simple vodka & soda which was perfect. For those reading this that think you cant mess that up...you certainly can! If you're going through Coleman or are like me and will jump in the car and go on an adventure to try great food, make it a point to stop at Black Cur!! You will be delighted you did!

Was there this past weekend for an annual friends weekend getaway. Absolutely great experience. We sat in the front of the pizzeria due to BlackCur being so busy. Thats how awesome they are. Go here, ask to sit in Malachi's section. He's an absolute Rockstar server and excellent young man. I own a painting company, if I had 3 of him, id be a millionaire. Order the lasagna, the bib salad, and old fashioned. Trust me!!

My mother and I had a dinner date and shared some great dishes. We had great service from Alycia and loved the atmosphere. We had Black Pepper Biscuits, RL Bandera Quail, Beeman NY Strip Steak and Wood-fired Broccolini Romesco. Delicious! My favorite dish was the Quail, a must try!

The hype is real…the service was great and the food was truly divine! We shared an app, salad and MASSIVE steak and sides!! The crab cake arancini was the best crab cake I’ve ever tasted. Followed by avocado and hearts of palm salad (that balsamic reduction was PERFECT!) We also shared the 24 oz. Ribeye, Mac and cheese, duck fat potatoes, and roasted carrots.

Besides our server being amazing, I would never come here again unless my boss requested me to. We had reserved a table for a group of 8 successful, respectable business men that hadn’t seen each other in well over a year. The “owner” sent the bartender (instead of coming himself) to tell us to “quiet down.” Our table by no means was being vulgar, yelling or being disrespectful in any way. It was simply a group of 8 people having to project our voices a little louder due to not being directly next to eachother. In addition to this, there was one table of 4 & maybe 2 people at the bar being just as “loud,” that didn’t seem to mind our volume (just as we weren’t bothered by theirs…It’s a bar/restaurant we don’t expect it to be silent in there). As my first experience here, I was extremely disappointed in the disrespect from the owner. I’d like to add this owner had no idea behind the meaning of our gathering together, so it was an extra slap in the face.

Yelp
Black was perfect for a very special occasion. I will definitely be back. It's worth the drive.

Yelp
OMG! What a casual, yet upscale dining experience. You will so enjoy this restaurant, and the entire staff. We were greeted by Peyton, and she spoiled us the entire time we were there. Every choice on the menu she explained to us proved to be positively delicious and oh so memorable. She share the history of the Black Cur Steak...........and she was over the top familiar with each and every menu choice. Fun and upbeat personality, too! Delicious wagyu ribeye.....sooooo daggone juicy and tender, and so delicately presented, too. You will love this experience.... Added benefit is the small, friendly town of Coleman, Texas. Glad we saw Chet Garner's Daytripper..............as he showcased this amazing Steakhouse............the BLACK CUR-------------located at 414 S. Commercial Avenue, in Coleman, Texas! We're so glad we tried it, too. It's "over the top" amazing! E N J O Y!!!! Treat yourself...........It is soooooo worth it! Gary & Linda Kerrville, Texas

Yelp
Talk about fine dining in a small town. This place was incredible! We started with the crab arancini and ordered a second one because it was so good! For the first time ever, I ordered a pork chop at a restaurant and it was delicious. The jalapeño Mac and cheese was the perfect complement. I actually liked that more than the Mac and cheese side dish. The potatoes with bacon and duck fat was our favorite side dish. Then to finish it off, we did the frozen peanut butter chocolate and bread pudding desserts that ended this experience in a high note. The one hour drive to come eat here was well worth it. Absolutely recommend this great place!

Yelp
Umm....I'm sorry what? I was completely blown away and am mad at myself for waiting this long to go! This place is so good. The service was great. It is just a small town steakhouse. Small but intimate and adorable. You always hear about the big steakhouses in Dallas or Austin and they're great but I'm a sucker for a small town one. Everything was great. My husband said it was the best steak he's ever had (and he's had plenty). The food took a while to come out which many would see as a downfall but I appreciated it because it means it is made to order which is how it should be. The only thing I will say is that the Mac and cheese was the low light of the meal. Not that it was bad but it could definitely use some salt. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
How about posting a menu with updated prices since the one you show is over 3 years old If you're proud of your restaurant you shouldn't be ashamed to post prices

Rebecca R.

Yelp
I highly recommend this restaurant. Not only does it have a great vibe, but the food is delicious. and the service is impeccable.

Yelp
Just finished our meal, one of the finest meals I've ever eaten in a restaurant! I'm just sorry I live 1041miles away. I had the Flat Iron Steak perfection, my brother had the Picahana Steak, Perfection, my sister had the Seafood Risotto, Perfection & my sister in law had the Black Cod, just perfect. We choose the Brownie w/Whipped Cream for dessert, so glad we split 2. Service was fantastic, drinks from the bar were spot on. I will be back with my wife. If your reading this and live in the area just go and try it.

Mark D.

Yelp
This place is off the chain!!! My wife was mad that we drove all the way to Coleman to eat a steak, but she claimed that was the best steak she had EVER eaten! Just outstanding...

Yelp
Great service and food in a relaxed atmosphere . I highly recommend it for a quite evening out

Yelp
Ive had food across the globe. I've been to 3 Michelin stars restaurants. Multiple. Food at Black Cur was fantastic. It was a great combination of earthy, gamey, yet freshly innovative combinations of flavors. It was a very very enjoyable dinner experience, who knew it'd be in Coleman, TX. If you get just one thing for dinner, do the bread pudding. Or the ribeye. Life changing. Their new chef is blowing it up. Makoa even came out to say hi and presented the dishes. Ribeye is phenomenal. Coleman is going to be the new Inn in Little Washington. Small town, fantastic food.

Yelp
Delicious food and beautiful restaurant. We always receive excellent service. If you want a unique dining experience you should give this place a try.

Yelp
Someone in Coleman knows what they're doing... Red wine was served at 56 degrees. Cocktails are innovative and unique. We went early with no reservation (seemed frowned upon) so the bartender was our server. She was all-encompassing knowledgeable on food and beverage which was refreshing for the area. Cute blonde, didn't catch her name. House wine was very good. Food was excellent. Only The Hideout in Brownwood has a more sophisticated palate for the surrounding 50 miles. We will definitely be back. Ambiance, Quality, and Service all top notch.

Yelp
The Black Cur is a newly opened steakhouse in Coleman, TX. Owned by the same people who also own Rancho Loma and Rancho Pizzeria (both fantastic in their own right.) Highly recommend a reservation as there are very few tables to be had for spontaneous patrons. And for those wondering, A Black Cur is a type of dog (usually used to hunt) that happens to look remarkably like a slightly smaller and slimmer Rhodesian Ridgeback. Now you know! Atmosphere: Set alongside its partner restaurant Rancho Pizzeria, it is located in a renovated old building downtown. The restaurant is well manicured and has a very open feeling to it. There is a long bar that runs almost the full length of the main dining hall that allows several customers to sit and eat and drink. 1 Star Service: The service was great. It is not a fast-food restaurant. They warn you of this. They will space out your dishes so you can casually converse and take your time on your courses. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. 2 Stars Food: This is where it gets good! Every single dish we had (and boy did we splurge) was top-notch. We started off with 4 separate appetizers. Yes, there were only the two us . First was the Spicy BBQ Shrimp. I wouldn't necessarily call it spicy but it was extremely tasty. Basically a Cajun spiced grilled shrimp in a tomato-based sauce. Secondly we had the RL Ricotta Gnocchi ( I assume the RL stands for Rancho Loma, where the dish most likely originates.) The gnocchi was the perfect amount of chewy and melt in your mouth. It was covered in a Bolognese meat sauce and Parmesan cheese. Thirdly we had the Semi-dried tomato Caprese. It had a basil arugula pesto and pine nuts. I just wished it had been bigger. I could have eaten two of these. I don't know what else they had in the pesto but it was absolutely divine. An almost citrusy addition to the combo of mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. Lastly we had what I consider to be the absolute best French Onion soup to ever hit my palate. Buttery smooth garlicky broth with just the right cut of onions and covered with a thick layer of the gooiest gruyere cheese and baguette this side of the Palace of Versailles. It was THAT good. Ok then. How about the rest of the course? We shared our last two courses. We opted for the 18oz Beeman NY Strip which was covered with a decadent yet earthy mix of wild sautéed mushrooms. Cooked to perfection and then served with a super buttery and cheesy potato gratin. This was more than enough for 2 people. We were going to skip dessert but decided against it. We had the burnt cheesecake. It was quite good. 2 Stars Overall: A superlative dining experience which was also well priced for the dedication and effort put into the food. We will definitely return. 5 Stars

Yelp
Finally got to eat here this last weekend. You MUST have reservations- they had to politely turn away a few while we were dining there. I must say- this place is worth the hype! Top shelf type place, and chef made food. The Brussel sprouts were hands down THE BEST I HAVE EVER EATEN! In fact I'm wishing I had some right now.

David S.

Yelp
Great food and drinks as always. You must try the Brussels sprouts and the bread pudding.

Yelp
Wow! I was blown away. I stayed the night in Coleman, this cute small town with wonderful citizens. Who knew a tiny town would have this really nice restaurant with scrumptious cuisine. My server/bartender, Boone, was great to talk to and a great pear martini maker. I didn't eat the steak, but heard it is good. I had the blackened catfish. I changed up the sides and added the brussel sprout appetizer. It was so good. I just about licked the plate. I had the charred romaine salad. So so good.

Yelp
Hands down the best restaurant in Coleman if you're after an elevated dining experience. The seasonal menu is always on point and fresh. You'd be hard pressed to find a meal this good in Dallas or Houston! It's worth the trip. Pro tip, stay the night and have lunch at their sister restaurant, Rancho Pizzeria on your way out.

Margie H.

Yelp
I was very disappointed. if you want a glass of wine, you only have one choice of red and one choice of white for a glass. All other wines you have to buy by the bottle. That is just wrong. I wanted a Cabernet and I could only get a Pinot Noir which I declined and had water There were three of us, and we all ordered their hamburger cooked medium. They all came out seared on each side and raw meat in the middle They did take them back and bring back ones that were cooked to order

Zeezee D.

Yelp
There aren't enough stars for this wonderful restaurant. The service was outstanding. The food is like the best you can find in a big city. Atmosphere is very very cool and upscale. Steaks were perfectly cooked. Every app mouth-watering. Yummy cocktails - the pear martinis are addictive but watch out! The fries nice and crispy, Brussels sprouts amazing!!

Morgan M.

Yelp
Been to Black Cur many times and it never disappoints! The food is always amazing and they have a great drink menu. The staff are wonderful.

Yelp
If you have not tried this place, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! This little upscale steak restaurant is delicious. In fact, we have not found anything on the menu yet that is not absolutely tasty. An small upscale place in a small town that serves up big flavors!

Yelp
A small space but large when it comes to flavor and service. Pricey, but we felt it was worth it. We will go again.

Yelp
WOW! We have always loved Rancho Pizzeria and this is such a compliment and one step up. Same type of beautiful atmosphere. The food was amazing! Started with the Shishito peppers and they were so good. Crab Cakes were mostly crabmeat. Brussel Sprouts best ever! Steak was perfect and flavorful. Bread pudding was unique and fabulous! Do yourself a favor and take the drive to Coleman. You won't be disappointed. Everything we ordered was 5 star!

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing! Being from San Diego CA i have been completely unimpressed with Abilene's seafood. Until now, the Bronzino at this restaurant was amazing. This place is far better than Perinis and Cooper Creek in Abilene. We will be coming here from Abilene much more often. Brussels sprouts were also to die for!

Yelp
We love the black cur. Everything we have had is good. The drinks are good, and the food is very good. I highly recommend.

Wendy W.

Yelp
Heard wonderful things about this place and their cocktails. Went in and there were about five people in a restaurant that could hold about 50+ people. Simply wanted to have a cocktail. Manager in charge told us he could not accommodate us. So we left and took our money elsewhere.

Yelp
This restaurant will go down as one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Everything we ordered was amazing and perfectly balanced in every flavor. I will be dreaming of this food and can not wait to make my next reservation. The ambiance was gorgeous and it felt so special to eat here. Even when the restaurant is full, it isn't load or boisterous. I can't say anything bad about this place and I can't wait to go again.

Anna B.

Yelp
Who would've thought little Coleman would have a great restaurant like this? We had a large group but they took good care of us all and every single meal was a delight.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
Came here on a date night with the Mrs. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and service. It's a more upscale establishment than some might be used to experiencing. I found the prices within reason of what I'd expect at a similar restaurant in Dallas, Houston, etc. Same with the overall vibe. The grass fed burger is exceptional, zero complaints. Our appetizer was the crab cake which was really good also. I thought the fun fries were an interesting touch but I did like them quite a bit. We will be back many times I'm sure. FYI - Call for a reservation or message them on Facebook.

Yelp
My husband and I came here in April 2021 for our last dinner together before tying the knot. Great food is an understatement. My husband is so picky and in his own words, "This is the best steak I've ever eaten!" It was so so so good. The portion sizes are perfect so we could even have dessert. And omg the bread pudding was the best! Thank you for a very memorable evening. And to the couple who gave us $100 toward our dinner, we're still trying to pick our jaws up off the floor. Thank you!

Yelp
Excellent dinner and drinks. Pear martini very good. Filet excellent. Go to Coleman go to Black Cur.

Yelp
Hands down the best food in the area! I have had steaks from both Ruth's Chris and Del Frisco's and neither compare to the food I enjoyed here! So nice to have something of this caliber so close to home.

Erika J.

Yelp
We were visiting Abilene from Arizona. We decided to head out to Coleman for a rodeo. We happened upon Black Cur Steak on Yelp and decided to try it out. It was an awesome experience from start to finish. Outstanding food/drinks and amazing service! We will definitely return. We are excited to introduce this culinary gem in mid Texas to our family and friends!

Yelp
I wish I could leave a better review. Had high hopes but underdelivered in every way. Group of 8 and they would only allow for reservations at 5:30 or 8:00. Reluctantly chose 8 pm. Arrived at 8 and were told it would be just a few minutes, so all 8 of us stood at the very small entry waiting for our table. Seated at 8:30 after a very uncomfortable 30 minutes of watching everyone eat. Once seated our cocktails were spilled, which left everything very sticky with no clean up. Ordered four different appetizers, all delicious and the highlight of the meal. We then waited until 9:30 to be served our entrees. Of course, all but one ordered steaks, one undercooked (ordered well)and two over cooked (ordered med rare). The undercooked steak was sent back and we didn't see it for another 20 minutes so we didn't dare send the other two back. Another high note, the sea bass was great! All the entrees came out over a 30 minute period, so the idea of waiting for everyone to receive their meal was not possible, as the steak that was sent back did not arrive back at the table until just before 10. I thought maybe they were short handed, but saw three different people that were just checking with tables but somehow overlooked ours. I was hoping for a very memorable evening for our out of town guests but sadly it was everything but. No complimentary cocktail for having to wait , no apology or even a thanks for coming in. Their regulars seemed to be getting a lot of attention, and everyone was served before us in the restaurant, even 2 and 4 tops that came in much later than us. Hopefully it is just a case of a bad night or they just aren't good with large groups.
