"Black Dog is hoping for a Blue Wave on Tuesday night with appropriately named $5 shots of blue curaçao, vodka and seltzer. Election coverage will be projected onto the wall of the Lowertown cafe." - Joy Summers

"Black Dog Cafe, a versatile, industrial-styled space in Lowertown, St. Paul, has been a go-to gathering spot since 1998. It evolved over the years into a popular all-day venue offering cocktails, beer, wine, and live jazz, especially on Saturday nights. The family-owned cafe expanded in 2016 to include a full bar and kitchen, offering a menu heavy on eggs, sandwiches, pizzas, and sharable global plates. The cafe's closure was influenced by several factors, including COVID-19." - Tierney Plumb

I have just revisited Black Dog after an extended absence, and figured I would update my review based on my most recent experience. The immediate appearance of the restaurant is....sparse. It kind of felt closed or in the middle of a remodel. Not a mark against it, just something to be aware of. Maybe it was just the fact that it was EMPTY due to high heat outside. The staff were very kind and friendly, and I felt welcomed and well attended to throughout my visit. I ordered the falafel tacos, and they were quite delicious! Filled with flavor and texture, each taco was a savory experience that left me disappointed I only ordered 3 when I came to the end of my dish 😂. Overall, this is a great place to stop by for a bite, a drink, or an event (they have music and such occasionally).

I had a wonderful brunch! The avocado toast and bacon were perfectly done. My daughter enjoyed her huevos rancheros and dirty chai as well. The tables are very spaced apart from other customers. Our server was great and the food was done quickly!

Went for Saturday night jazz, 8-11pm every Saturday! Incredible. Staff was super nice. Only had some tres leche cake and that was super good. Nice comfortable space for a low key Saturday.

I had a wonderful experience at Black Dog Cafe. I went on a weekend morning and we were able to get seated right away on the patio. It was really cool to enjoy a meal and watch the action of the farmers market and the light rail at the same time. I had the salmon scrambler and it was tasty. I would definitely go back and get the salmon scrambled again. Our server was very kind and attentive and took the covid precautions seriously.

This was my second time at black dog. Lovely ambiance, they have live music if you come later in the evening. Menu looks approachable and delicious but the execution could use some work. Ordered the huevos rancheros which were tasty and spicy. Add avocado for 2 dollars extra cause its a nice contrast from crunchy to soft. Eggs were perfectly cooked and runny. Someone else at our table had the roast beef hash which was less appealing. Roast beef was pretty dry, dish came out like warm, and could use some more salt and pepper to really flavor the dish. Service could use some work. Waited a few minutes before we were brought menus by our server, then a few minutes more for water, then a while for coffee and bloody Mary's. Server came around once we had our food to check up on us but not to refill drinks. Fine experience overall and will be back to check out the rest of the menu!

Every Saturday night there is an amazingly well curated rotating Jazz 2-header show that is different and AMAZING every time. Great small menu foods and great drinks/service

Love the Saturday night Jazz!! Happened to stumble upon and really digged the vibe. Not sure what it's like other than a saturday night, but for sure I'm coming back. The cheese curds are great and staff are nice. The one we had always smile. The configuration of the place is a little awkward considering theres a stage, but get there by 630 and you'll be fine.

Great place to listen to jazz, drink beer/wine, and eat dinner! My last visit was on a snowy Sunday night during a Vikings game so the crowd was small and quiet. The Charlie Lincoln Quartet played and they were amazing! Our meal was tasty and the service was excellent. We ordered a glass of Kölsch beer on tap and didn’t like it. I had the spaghetti with tomato sauce and it was very tasty with loads of basil. They have a full service bar here and a large separate dining room for overflow diners.
