It will make your jaw drop when you walk inside. So many treasures and separate areas. I needed much more time to explore. The staff was super friendly as well. I will be back many many many more times.

I have been to Black Dog Salvage countless times and love how they repurpose and reuse so many things. As someone who works in the sustainable lifestyle space it means a lot, and my cousin is a famous vintage dealer in Long Island so we do a lot in the sector. I also love that my dog is always loved and welcomed, as well as my kids. Until today. Upstairs there is a piano that I’ve seen kids and adults use. My kids decided today they wanted to play, so I let them, I noticed quickly they were being more heavy handed than they should and went to stop them. Mind you there is no sign not to use it. But a blonde woman on staff who I had never seen before decided to admonish my kids FOR ME. I asked her if the piano was not to be used, she snapped at me and said no. I tried to apologize and say I had seen others use it so I didn’t know. She ignored me and got snippy with my kids to get away. I tried to address her and say I was removing them, but she again ignored me and tried to PHYSICALLY SHUT THE PIANO ON MY KIDS HANDS! I am still enraged thinking about it. I told her that she had no right to do such a thing to my kids and she just said “I didn’t touch them”. Yeah just trying to slam a cover on their hands! We immediately left and I will not return again with my kids and would recommend others with young kids not to visit unless they train staff to interact properly with children. No matter how much I’ve spent there or how much I usually enjoy the staff this has completely ruined the place for me and thus why the two stars.

A dangerously great place to shop! A ton of amazingly salvaged stuff. You would spend days there! Also cool places to hang out around it outside!

This place is fun to visit! There are stalls for local artists, antiques and an art gallery. There is hand-hewn, irregular-shaped lumber slabs suitable for custom dining room tables -- and they take orders for custom work. Then there are hundreds of hard-to-find windows, doors, mantels, door knobs, light fixtures, stained glass, drawer pulls and etc. From the assortment of folk art, garden sculptures and crafts to the gift shop and, yes, the black dog, this place is a must-see.

Had a good time wandering around Black Dog Salvage this afternoon. This place has everything from doors, sinks, light globes to toys, furniture & really nice art. It is organized neatly, but it is a good afternoon to find your way around. A friend had recommended me to go there & she was right. I just took a quick trip around today & will bring my family back sometime. The staff is very friendly, professional & knowledgeable. I ended up buying an antique pair of glasses there. I will definitely come back.

I was recently introduced to this great store, its owners, and staff. They were very easy to work with designing a gorgeous, thick hickory mantle for my family room, in Lexington, SC, from a piece of their inventory. I’m very eager to receive the finished product. Well worth the visit!

Had to check the #3 thing to do in Roanoke during a recent visit. Huge place with lots of indoor space that was perfect for a sweltering summer day. Wandering is encouraged! Interesting mix of vendor goods set beside salvaged goods. As many have noted, this is not a place to find a deal, but it's a great place to find something unique. And if you love the idea of making something cool, but don't have the skills, there are lots of neat constructions. Great place for ideas. Don't miss the fine art upstairs!

Way overpriced salvage materials. Good displays and lots to look at though. Good way to use some extra time if in town.

So we were in Roanoke and we knew of BDS from the DIY Network (soon the be Magnolia after the buyout from Chip and Joanna Gaines), so stopping by seemed like a great idea! We had no idea of the scope of this operation until we arrived. The store contains not only BDS's own salvage items but also consignment from multiple other antiquers and rehabbers. Materials from indoor and outdoor abound! You'll need some time just to stroll through, and then there's the warehouse where bigger and recent arrivals reside. Wowser. If you like this, and my wife does, it's a blast. I must admit it was more interesting than most other shopping venues. If you are crafty, this might be close to heaven for you. This place is amazing for anyone. I love the show Black dog salvage I've been watching it for years and I've always wanted to go to see the stuff that I seen on TV and I did. My only letdown was I didn't get to meet Robert -Mike -Ted -Tay and Grayson. That would had made my day. I think it would be fun going into different places and find old treasures but it looks like very hard work. This warehouse is 40,000 square feet and it is full of stuff. Like Mike says we got stuff and now we understand when we hear him say that. Something for everyone. Consignment from other people that make items for the warehouse and a lot of antique and knickknacks. They make a lot of cool furniture and other stuff they also sell hats and T-shirts. I purchased a really cool mailbox with their logo on it can't wait to put it up. There's also another warehouse not far away but it was closed the Saturday we were there. Another building with 20,000 square feet that's were they keep there trucks and trailers. Also a huge building and yard. Next to the Black Dog Salvage is the Stone House it is used for a Guesthouse and event venue. It has some cool pieces that they created and would have loved to have seen them but it was closed. When we got home we were watching old episodes and they were talking about the dog bowl which is where the stage is for concerts. A place for local people to go to have fun. The LOVE sign was made from old Savage pieces to honor Virginia's tourism slogan Virginia is for lovers. I just know that this is a place you need to put on your bucket list. We enjoy it.

Wow. I could seriously spend a whole day just roaming through Black Dog Salvage. If you have never been, you really should stop by for a look. They have such an incredible inventory of eclectic and funky items. We really enjoyed looking at the doors and the stained glass throughout the huge building. They have a great mixture of salvaged and new items to browse. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They are 'dog friendly' so if your dog is well behaved and likes to shop they can come in with you!!

Prices (1/5): This place was very expensive. It felt like a junk yard. Half the place seemed like someone went through the trash and picked stuff out to sell... completely rusted, falling apart, and broken. Items (5/5): It kinda has a bit of everything: wood, tables, soap, door knobs, slot machine, dog leashes, coffee, $1000+ artwork, and landscaping statues. It had lots of different consignment booths. We didn't get anything and kinda wasted an hour here. If you like thrifting expensive stuff, this is the place for you. It was cool to see what other people think is a treasure though.

Bottom Line: 40,000+ square feet to explore including architecture salvage, upcycled items, local art and more. I love American history, Americana and architecture, especially stuff from the turn of the century, so I dutifully watched every episode of Salvage Dogs on Discovery Network's DIY channel. I always thought it would be fun to visit Black Dog Salvage and finally this November my husband and I made the nearly five hour drive to visit! I was a little nervous that my trip to Black Dog Salvage would be a let down but it wasn't! I didn't see any of the famous dogs but all of the staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful! I thoroughly enjoyed perusing all 40,000 square feet of their primary location looking at the obvious and the obscure. I saw various pieces I recognized from the show and I was glad to claim several old yarn spools for myself. I also debated, and perhaps foolishly left behind, BDS Furniture Paint. Their paint doesn't require sanding or priming and can be used on wood, metal and more. Sounds like a DIYers dream come true. Overall visiting Black Dog Salvage was a really great experience and with the changing inventory I wish I lived closer!

Walked in and a sales associate gave no greeting. However, when I greeted her she said "we close in 30 minutes" How is that a greeting?? It's the type of customer service that is not "warm" and welcoming. 10 minutes later an older gentleman said the same thing. We left without our purchase. Black Dog Salvage can do better!

Black Dog Salvage is tied to a reality TV show. Did you know that??? I didn't, at least not prior to our quick weekend visit to Virginia. Many insisted we make visiting their warehouse a priority, so we did. If you are into home renovations and quirky (yet cool) reclaimed furniture and other vintage items and are skilled at turning trash to treasure, this place is definitely for you. However, as creative as I am, I find it difficult to see the golden egg within all the rubble, which is kinda what this place looks like to me. Everything from old door handles and hinges, to vintage amber colored drinking glass & pitcher, to a life sized metal horse. There is art, clothing, vinyl records, claw foot bath tubs, an old juke box, garden statues, unique furniture, the ENTIRE DANG DOORWAY to an apartment building and I'm pretty certain I saw a rocket parked out front! But what they have most abundantly are doors & shutters of all shapes and sizes. One in particular reminded me of those metal accented wooden doors I've seen on ancient Spanish-built churches. It was absolutely gorgeous! ~ FINAL THOUGHTS The experience was fun. Our friends actually bought the amber colored pitcher and intend to use it as a flower vase. They also purchased a vintage Batman car in the toy section where, for some odd reason, Wolverine was driving it... LOL The warehouse is huge (40,000 square feet), so be prepared to have plenty to explore. Many thanks to the great staff at Black dog salvage. I stopped in to check out what all the buzz was about and wasn't disappointed at all. I recommend if there's a spot in the parking lot venture into the store and enjoy the atmosphere. But if the parking lot is full probably steer clear because it would be over congested within the building. There is a lot more to see than what you see on the TV show. The staff is as friendly as they appear on the show and are quick to point out some of the best fines at their boutique

4.5 is right on. Okay when I pulled up, I was like HELLOOOOO this is my jam! Lots of cement statuary, wrought iron, junk things that you say Hmm, I can use this for something.. then I went inside. First part is the "junk" stuff. They had a ton of lighting fixtures (nice ones too and some old junky a mix of all). They had everything from wood floor pieces, barn wood, junk wood, newell posts, kitchen sinks, a TON of doors, iron gate pieces, a few old windows/stained glass and all that jazz. Then you get into the "antique/repurposed" area. They had a lot of artisans there who took some of the junk scraps and made things like tables, cutting boards, art pieces etc. There were paintings by locals, other "crafty" things. A toy room, some other antique or things you see in any antique store. But it didn't feel like an antique mall and not as much clutter and stuff an antique mall would have. I didn't buy anything. Some of the stuff was overpriced (hence the four stars). I thought the statuary and a few pieces outside were out of line with reality but inside more reasonable. I don't buy much anymore (on my journey to SELL before I die) but if you are needed odd things, this is a cool place! I was only looking for one thing (wrought iron cat or something to go on a feral cat house we're building and I didn't find anything but dogs and other things and they were almost double what I found them for here. That booth was cool though, they had nice things in there; just over priced. The guy who greeted us was awesome too~ Worth talking to him; he's knowledgable about the area and the stuff there.

This place is amazing! Every time I visit I find exactly what I need. The staff is wonderful and helpful. I told them what I was looking for and she took me right to my item. I definitely recommend this place!

While working in Roanoke, I wanted to visit the home base for the TV show "Salvage Dawgs". I enjoyed seeing some of the pieces I remember being shown on the tv program. The facility is large and full of all sorts of salvage items. They welcome fans of the tv show that, as I, really wanted to see the place and hope to see someone associated with the show (I didn't), as well as those that are looking for unique pieces for residential or commercial projects. The prices are not cheap. One would have to have some deep pockets if they wish to purchase items for their projects. Overall a most pleasant visit.

BDS used to be cool with lots of original salvage pieces. Now they've gone pricier (they were always pricy to begin with) and have a big section leased out to other sellers (stores within a store) with hodge podge goods. Somethings being hulked are brand new pieces. Fame must've gone to their head and it's much more touristy. It's still an interesting place to browse but you'll only find one of a kind pieces on the salvage half section of the shop with much higher $$$$$ tag.

I give this place 5 stars on friendliness and service alone. Tay and Grayson took time to talk to us and take selfies. They were both super nice and Grayson even did the check-out of our purchases. I guess I am used to most of the places we visit that are on, or were on TV where the people are only there for filming and don't really work there. Both of them were working very hard. What a great experience. If you're in the area it's a must see, very down to earth people. Tip: there is parking in the main driveway and further down the hill at the park.

Visiting from out of town and so happy I came across this establishment on trip advisor. I could roam this store for hours. Most importantly, the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful in finding what we were looking for. A must see when in Roanoke!

What an amazing place! We are fans of the show so this has been on our bucket list of places to visit. So many interesting things to look at and to remember seeing from different episodes. I wish we would have brought a Uhaul so I could have purchased everything I wanted! Wether or not you are a fan of the show... you will absolutely love this place!

An eclectic variety of salvaged pieces and repurposed odds and ends. If you looking for a unique statement furniture piece, this is worth checking out, but bring a fat wallet. A little over commercialized with flat screens promoting different things. Found a brick mold w/one price tag for $9 and a second price tag w/the Black Dogs label for $14, store manager only reduced one of the three we wanted to buy. If nothing else, a great way to get some inspiring ideas for remodels and DIY projects. There are some very talented artists with creative ideas.

Where does one start?? If you haven't seen the show this place would still be amazing! The unique finds from all the salvaged items is well organized and priced well. If I had the ability to get things to California easier, I would have dented my checkbook. Great fun

This place is amazing! We didn't buy anything, but it was so fun to browse around and check out all of the neat old stuff.

Funky shop in Roanoke has a bit of everything when it comes to furniture, antiques, home decor and knickknacks. Very interesting items from decades past and newer items as well. It was a lot of fun coming here and checking out what they have. Some items carry hefty price tags seeing as they're ancient and had to have been restored but a lot of items were reasonably priced. The staff are eager to help as well. Great place to come sho for something unique for your home and recommended.

I worked with Jim on a custom order today. He spent lots of time going over designs and helping me to try and come up with my own unique style. He sketched for me, we looked throughout the shop, browsed custom order books and all sorts of idea kickstarters to help me decide on a final rough draft. There turn around on Manufactoring is fast and custom prices are reasonable. I can't wait to see the finished product. Thanks so much for your patience and willingness to spend the time that it took to get inside my head today!

Loved the place as we stopped on a road trip. The prices were a bit high on some items but loved looking around. My daughter wanted to buy a wine storage piece but its was about 750.00 so its way up there. But i did love the items even if they were out of our price range would love to knwo if they deliver and if they take layaway

This place is absolutely incredible. They have huge iron pieces and wood and barn lumber and doors and tables and just everything. There is even a warehouse a few blocks away with more to go through! If you want to revel in the old and salvaged, this is your stop.

I first saw Robert & Mike's show on DIY, and since I travel to Roanoke at least once a month I had to check it out. This is a wonderful operation, with everything from your basic salvage/restoration pieces and parts to upcycled tables and such imagined and wrought from industrial elements into refined but interesting furniture. There are also numerous booths of other themed items that you'll love to browse. Lots of chalk-painted vintage pieces, and a wide range of prices to accompany them. Plan to spend at least an hour on your first visit, but realistically 2+ if you want to do it justice. If you're really lucky, you'll be there on a day that they're filming the TV show!

I had way higher expectations for this place. It has a few neat pieces to look at but everything is ridiculously expensive. It wasn't as big as I expected but I did appreciate that they were dog friendly and had a couple huge stained glass windows that were pretty to look at.

Black Dog Salvage is a fun, trendy warehouse full of treasure! I regularly visit Black Dog for inspiration and great finds for the home/patio. Their inventory ranges from clawfoot bathtubs to one of a kind works of local art. This place is a must on the travel agenda if you're visiting Roanoke! It's easily accessible from downtown Roanoke, and the parking is convenient as well. Prepare to spend at least an hour exploring this place inside and out-- a room of antique doors, a room of windows, a lawn of clawfoot bathtubs-- it's easy to get swept away!

Our love for the tv show brought us here and once we got here, we found we love this warehouse even more than imagined. There is a ton of stuff here, from the raw materials to the repurposed goods...There is literally something for everyone. You can spend hours perusing this place. So worth the trip from Greensboro, NC!!!

This place was AWESOME. My boyfriend and I are from out of town and came in after it was recommended by multiple people and I absolutely understand the hype. So many cool finds and interesting things to look at. Everyone who worked there was sweet and the owner took the time to give us a little tour and talk to us.

Yep, this is the shop behind the TV show Salvage Dawgs and now heading into its 6th season, its fame has brought a few things to its customers. Higher prices, longer waits for custom work (that you just saw on their show and absolutely must have for yourself) and a plethora of colours for their T-shirts (colours are the new black here). It's always had a chosen group of outside vendors to help fill up their stadium sized warehouse, but with the success of their custom work (once again due to the TV show's popularity), those independent vendors are slowly getting pushed out to make room for more of the Salvage Dawgs custom work. That seems like a fine idea as the Salvage Dawgs custom work is much more interesting than most of the private vendor offerings. This is a BIG space, inside and out, and they collect all sorts of stuff here, from high school band uniforms and garden stoneworks to antique toys and giant old signage with just about everything else in between. They have been in the current location in Roanoke for 15 years now which features multiple rooms in a warehouse setting with even more of the big stuff outside in their equally large yard. But if you're hoping to run into Mike or Robert, don't be disappointed when they are not there (they're usually out collecting stuff for the store), but you will most likely meet Susie (Mike's wife) as well as the shop's namesake, Sally and her sidekick, May, two of the friendliest black Labs you'd ever want to meet. Can you find some of this stuff cheaper elsewhere? yes (mainly the basic stuff like doors and such), but it's worth a stop in because they have a lot of unusual pieces that you won't find anywhere else, and like I said, that Sally is one great dawg.

Love this place. Super unique. Most of the items found here are pretty pricey but look long enough and you'll find a steal...

We visited Black Dog on a recent trip to Roanoke with family. While browsing the vendor booths, we were greeted by Robert's sisters, who chatted with us sharing the story of how Robert and Mike started their salvage business. I'm sure they have told the story many times, but they were genuinely friendly and welcoming. Later we saw Robert, who was on the floor getting things together for a trip to PA the following day. He, too, stopped and talked to several customers. I was impressed by his genuineness and appreciation for customers. Merchandise prices were high, as I expected, but they had a nice mix of vintage, salvage and new items. Definitely worth a visit even if "the stars" aren't in house.

She: This place is such a gem, and Sally the slightly smelly salvage dog makes it a perfect place to get lost in, if you have the time. Black Dog Salvage is a massive warehouse of reclaimed fixtures, windows, doors, metal railings, claw-foot tubs, old signs, and various and sundry other treasures collected regionally. The warehouse boasts two floors, and a small design-oriented area demonstrating how one might re-purpose a host of chairs, tables, lamps, and vintage memorabilia to create a one-of-a-kind living space. In addition to the huge indoor warehouse, the metal yard is ripe with piles of metal railings, gates, frames, fountains, and more. The lobby boasts a host of salvage directories, design books, and idea books, as well as the beloved black dog. Clearly the proprietors love dogs: if you drop off an SPCA food donation you get 25% off your total purchase. Check out their ebay store, or drop in and get lost in the rows of windows and fixtures. Sit in a claw foot tub or three. Get inspired to keep hitting those flea markets and estate sales. This is THE go-to spot in the Roanoke region if you've got a penchant for authenticism, an eye for design, and an old house to restore. I love you, Black Dog Salvage. Him: When browsing the warehouse of salvage, you find a showroom of sorts of newly manufactured furniture made up, no doubt, of the scraps that BDS got inexpensively and is trying to reincorporate into contemporaryish housewares. This is not the company's strongest suit; it would serve them better to keep space for their great collections of genuine architectural salvage. For the builder/remodeler/designer who is seeking authentic artifacts with which to complete a project, these home made pieces are of no value. To me, the labyrinthine halls of BDS are a gem of Roanoke and I remember feeling that, although I'd not had coffee that morning, I was so excited by what was behind every corner that I had to make an effort to calm myself. So many ideas flow in as one sees and touches these old, higher quality remnants of older buildings. The service, knowledge and welcoming personalities of the folks who run BDS made the experience memorable. I highly recommend a long morning or afternoon spent wandering their collections.

Such a fun visit, and we were able to grab a small table, perfect for a writing desk in a small nook we have. Couldn't ask for nicer people. Make sure to visit the second warehouse on Ashlawn, too!

This has just become one of the most amazing places I have discovered! A complete and utter sensory overload if anything and EVERYTHING a person could think of. This wide open store has something for everyone. A "Pinterest" heaven!! There were so many amazing antiques, original and one of a kind items here, that you could create the most amazing home, yard and getaway in your own backyard. Iron gates, old doors, church stained glass, books, mirrors, tables, chairs, bricks...the list goes on and on. I seriously had to tell myself to leave after over an hour of trolling through this establishment. This is far beyond any kind of flea market or antiques store I have ever seen.

I drove an hour to come here specifically to purchase Annie Sloan paint. If you too are going for that I suggest you call first to make sure they have the color(s) you want. I was so disappointed to see that they were out of stock of at least 3 colors, one in which I needed for a big piece I'm doing. To top it off the girl at the counter was not only not helpful but pretty rude. Any other Annie Sloan stockist I have ever purchased from has gone above and beyond to help and share knowledge about the product, not so for this place. As far as anything else is concerned regarding the store I really can't comment, I have never heard of the show, I didn't look at the price or quality of any pieces or products in the store, I went on a mission for paint and left empty handed.

One of my favorite places to go! To shop, to browse and just to say hi the Black Dog. I love the uniqueness and always tell friends about this place. When family and friends visit- this is one of the places I take them to. No one is ever disappointed. I have bought some great stuff here

I am a big fan of the show and everyone that works there is the same in real life as they are in the show. The place is fantastic and lived up to most of my expectations. I did come with money in hand so to speak to buy a piece to take home. Everything we liked had a sold sticker and was awaiting pickup. I guess my best bet will be to talk to them and tell them what I am looking for.

I like that you can find some cool, unique, one of a kind pieces. However, some of their vendors just buy things from local stores, triple the price and then put it in their booth, which I think is pretty sketchy. I saw this cool gold metal ball that I thought was interesting, in a booth for $40 last week. Yesterday I was at TJ Maxx and saw the exact same thing for $10. The EXACT same thing! It really bummed me out. So now if I see something I like from BDS, I'll just check other stores before buying.
