NYC Coffee Shop Black Fox Has Opened in Midtown East | Eater NY

"A Financial District coffee-shop favorite has opened in Midtown, bringing reputable Australian-style coffee, sleek design, and above-average lunch fare uptown. Located just one block from Grand Central at 45 E. 45th Street (between Park and Madison avenues), the counter-service cafe pours Australian-influenced drinks like flat whites and matcha lattes made with housemade nut milk, using internationally sourced beans from George Howell, Coffee Collective, Heart, 49th Parallel, and Luna. The menu is more upscale than typical coffee shops — featuring smoky scrambled egg sandwiches, avocado toast on sourdough, and spicy breakfast burritos — and pastries are both made in-house and sourced from bakeries, with a standout chocolate chip cookie. The compact 850-square-foot space is modeled after a European espresso bar and designed for coffee-on-the-fly, encouraging standing among marble, brass, and walnut countertops with only five window seats. Owners Daniel Murphy and Gary Hardwick first opened Black Fox in 2016 on Pine Street and have since expanded to locations including 85 Broad Street and a quick espresso bar at 110 Wall Street; this Midtown spot also offers an expanded retail section and is open daily (6:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Monday–Friday; 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday–Sunday)." - Luke Fortney

Google
I’ve been to this coffee shop more than once. The coffee is good, and the place itself is quiet, clean, cozy, and comfortable. However, I do find the price a bit high — $7 for a medium cup of coffee feels expensive, especially considering that the average price for a similar coffee is around $5 at most places. Overall, good coffee and a nice atmosphere, but the pricing is on the higher side.

Google
One of the best coffee shop in the town Very clean place The variety of products is good & tasty I prefer to for morning ( espresso with pain au chocoat ( chocolate croissant ) ) tell them to warm it is better. The price is moderate

Google
Stopped by Black Fox Coffee and grabbed a latte to go, it was absolutely delicious. Smooth, well balanced, and clearly made with care. The space itself is very cute and welcoming, and the service was great. One small downside: there are no restrooms available for customers. Still a great spot for a quality coffee!

Google
I came from Boston and put some coffee shops to visit, I found the coffee incredible and the impeccable service. Clean environment and ambient music. I recommend. Coffee Latte is amazing!

Google
I really like them. I’ve had drip coffee and matcha. Both are very good, but the matcha is actually very good. Much, much better matcha than nearby. Only thing is the lids don’t fit correctly.

Google
#1 BEST almond croissant I've had - London included. Also nice staff, cute branding.

Black Fox Coffee is hands down one of my favorite cafés in NYC. Even though it’s a chain, the location near Grand Central has become a regular stop for me. I usually think the espresso drinks I make at home are better than what I get in most commercial cafés—but Black Fox is the exception. I often find myself happily walking a few blocks just to sit down with a latte or cortado. Every cup is consistently well-balanced, rich, creamy, and just straight-up enjoyable. I also love picking up beans here. They roast their own, and while those have a very distinctive (and kind of wild) soy sauce aroma that might not be for everyone, they do carry the Red Brick from a UK roaster—and that’s where the magic happens. It’s a fruity, modern espresso that’s smooth, sweet, and addictive in the best way. The space is bright and well-designed, with a great retail selection of brewing gear, merch, and snacks. It’s clear that they designed the space to be uncomfortable to not let you stay long. However, whether you’re a casual coffee drinker or a total espresso nerd, Black Fox hits the spot.

Google
Hands down the best café in Manhattan. Top-notch food, coffee, and service. I’ll definitely be back — their lattes and flat whites are exceptional

Yelp
Pretty good coffee spot in midtown. Coffee tastes nutty and goes well with almond croissant which was also pretty good. Would say it's above average but not amazing. Service was friendly.

Yelp
Positives: Vanilla date latte was well balanced, smooth, and crafted with care. Quickly made Clean, bright, well-designed cafe Negatives: No bathroom Outrageous prices for a beverage Limited space to stay and enjoy your coffee

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and got two espresso based drinks to stay. Both came out quick and at the perfect temp where we were able to drink them without waiting forever for them to cool down. They were probably the best coffees I've had in the city definitely really high quality and would recommend to anyone nearby. Prices are a little high it was just under $15 for these two drinks but for a really good coffee it's worth it!

Yelp
We were walking by and decided to try this coffee spot on our way to Times Square. There's was no line but the menu was simple. We ordered a vanilla iced latte. It came out pretty prompt. The interior was very minimalistic with a few chairs to sit on. They have grab and go juices. Service was prompt but very monotone. I thought we had just an ok experience.

Yelp
I met a friend on a weekday morning for coffee here, and it was really nice. There are three bar areas with 2-4 seats in each so about three small groups of customers can hang out here at any given time. I got a Vanilla Date Iced Latte, which was delicious and not overly sweet. Ambiance was nice and on the quieter side without loud music playing so my friend and I was able to chat without having to shout at each other. Would definitely come back again.

Yelp
This is the first coffee spot I try in NYC and it didn't disappoint. I had the Butterscotch iced latte with oatmilk and it had a great balance of flavors. The Butterscotch wasn't too strong and the delicious, smooth coffee was the star. Their customer service was good and the drink came out quickly which is a good thing because this particular location was tiny and didn't have much seating. I will be visiting Black Fox again!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Do not come here if you want a matcha - for $9 you will get a cup of almond milk and no matcha.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
This charming little coffee shop near Grand Central. It's quite cozy, with limited seating -- not the ideal spot for setting up your laptop and working, but perfect for a quick stop or a casual catch-up. They offer an impressive selection of unique drinks. I tried the butterscotch latte, which was smooth and not too sweet. My coworkers went for the s'mores latte and an iced matcha. The s'mores latte was topped with a toasted marshmallow -- a fun, creative touch that I'll definitely be trying next time!

Yelp
Quality european style coffee in midtown. One of your better options. The experience takes a little longer than starbucks, but the quality drastically outweighs the wait. Sleek scandinavian design. A nice cup of coffee.
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Butterscotch latte was pretty freaking good tbh. Expensive shit in an overly simplified aesthetic, but shit those white baristas made a good ass latte.
google avatar

Ka L.

Yelp
Coffee and latte were great. Croissant that day is not crispy on the outside, so that was just ok. Great service. Small but nice settings. Just a place to enjoy a quick coffee, not so much work. Latte is good!
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Saw this place online being discussed as one of the best coffee spots in Manhattan and it did not disappoint! It tastes so smooth and fresh it's hard to drink other coffees now. I am hooked on buying the Pedro Bonilla beans. Not a lot of seating as it is mostly a grab and go location but there are a few high tops and barstool style seats. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Rose May V.

Yelp
It was my first time at Black Fox Coffee and I was blown away by their coffee and pasty!Definately recommend to try the pasties and mocha latte.
google avatar

Sam E.

Yelp
Tl:dr- Cute, woodsy, small, loud. Ordered a vanilla date latte and despite the steady stream of customers, my latte was delivered quickly. It definitely had more date flavor than vanilla but it was pleasant! Even got some coffee beans ground for home. The prices though were a little heavy. $7.50 for a latte and $24 for a bag of beans. There's plenty of standing space to catch up with a friend, and there's quite of selection of coffee based items and pastries. A bit pricey but if you're in the area, go for it!
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Popped in for a coffee while killing time before my train at Grand Central. I'm boring when it comes to coffee, so ordered a black cold brew. Flavors were impeccable and wasn't bitter at all. Because it was in the middle of the day, there was absolutely no wait and all in all, I was in and out the door in less than a minute. Great service, even better coffee.
google avatar

Carlos H.

Yelp
Awesome coffee shop that wasn't too far from my hotel. The inside is really modern looking and the barista was friendly. Loved all the branding inside the cafe. The espresso tonic was delicious, they have a very expensive and nice espresso machine too. The prices were fair as well for a coffee shop in the city and they had plugs in case you need to charge your devices. My almond croissant was delicious too. Really soft inside and flavorful. The area outside could be a little better, but its fine. I would still return and would definitely check out their other locations. Recommend.

Yelp
We had some time to kill before going to the theater. Black Fox Coffee was right there. It was around dinner time and there were only a few people there. First, the service was outstanding. There were to Baristas there to cater to us. We ordered a variety of drinks - a mocha, latte, hot tea, and a decalf. The service was fast and friendly. We sat there for over an hour talking. Since they were vitually empty, they were not unhappy that we took up seats. They also chatted us up, which was fine. It was a nice experience and great coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best coffee you can find in Manhattan. I drink it daily, 2x a day, and am rarely disappointed. They also have very good almond croissants and pumpkin bread from local bakeries. It is definitely not cheap for speciality drinks, but I would prefer to spend a few extra dollars for a better coffee.
google avatar

Maryann K.

Yelp
Really great iced matcha, expertly made, great flavor. Convenient location on the go, would pop by here every morning if I lived in NYC. Staff are really friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried the espresso tonic. Interesting flavor.. not sure I liked it very much, only finished half. Ham + cheese croissant not great either. Service was good, vibes were fine. Tissues all had dried up coffee spills on it.
google avatar

Karmen T.

Yelp
Can't complain about the store or service, it was a cute shop and my scheduled pick up was ready by the time I got there. However, cannot say the same for the coffee... Chose to try this shop because we were interested in the speciality coffees and the cute name, but ended up being super disappointed in the coffee. We got the vanilla date and honey blossom lattes, but both were very milky and barely tasted of coffee. The honey blossom syrup was at least prevalent, but the vanilla date syrup was indiscernible-- it might as well have not been there. For minimum $7 dollar lattes, I would expect to at least be able to taste the espresso. I'd say go elsewhere for your caffeine needs; for this price or cheaper, you can get better coffee.

Yelp
The inside is nice and minimalistic but there's not much seating. One thing I noticed was that they sell beans from Coffee Collective (from Denmark) here, so I knew I had to cop a bag ($23 per 250g bag)! Excited to try them. The barista was very helpful and I was able to sample some of their filter coffee before deciding what to get. I ended up getting the macchiato (All Day Espresso) which was very bright and fruity. It was easy to sip but I didn't love it - would prefer something with a stronger after taste. Down to try a different drink next time! The coffee was a 3/5, but bumped the overall review to a 4/5 because of the great service.

Yelp
Located right near some of the world's largest investment banks and financial towers, the prices at this located are on brand for this area. So if you're not looking to spend an arm or a leg for a coffee, I don't recommend. The inside is really cute, has a clean minimalist vibe- but really, the $5 (Sm) Americano and $6 (!!) almond croissant is extremely not worth it. I had to say it- the pastries here look extremely average. Not sure why they are so expensive when you can get a bacon egg cheese sandwich for less. :( I wanted to like it- but this is a no. Yelp
Got 2 drinks here yesterday and both drinks were delicious. The butterscotch latte was our favorite so we came back again today and got another one before flying back home. The service was good but do keep in mind they usually only have one person on staff.

E R.

Yelp
I had the black sesame chai latte and it was so good! The woman at the counter was very friendly. The only downside is the lack of seating.
google avatar

Katie A. O.

Yelp
The coffee is a hit or miss - for anything working around the area, it's convenient but I won't go out of my way to get coffee here.
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Friendly staff! Great music. I would definitely recommend getting a coffee after lunch at UrbanSpace
google avatar

Thomas H.

Yelp
Not super impressed with the coffee at this shop. I had the Brazilian drip and thought it tasted watery. Too many places for me to try to go back. Try it if you need a cup.
google avatar

Sean J.

Yelp
Was one person out of 3 customers yet my plain no thrills cappuccino took 16 minutes. Store is very aesthetically pleasing but definitely not worth the wait. Only came in cause online it said they use Illy beans yet they use house beans instead. The potted plants also all looked like they haven't been watered in weeks.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick coffee on my last work trip and it hit the spot. The service was great and the coffee was fresh and delicious. The one note is that this is a very small coffee shop so it's not a great place to work. I went looking for a semi quiet place with a table and chairs and this wasn't the best place for that. Overall a great place to grab a quick coffee but not sit and hang out.

Dawa Y.

Yelp
Overpriced coffee with rude staff. I have had better latte at Dunkin, should have just walked a couple of blocks to Blue Bottle alas. The person at the front was extremely chatty with a patron and completely disregarded people waiting in line for coffee. Don't come here on a weekday, especially not on a Thursday morning.

Yelp
TLDR: Another outpost of Australian coffee shop, Black Fox. Try the Espresso Tonic for something different and yes, the chocolate chip cookie is great. Found myself in the area running errands and figured I'd give it a try. There is no shortage of coffee shops in this area but Black Fox does have some unique offerings. I asked for something signature and they recommended the Espresso Tonic. As the name implies, it's a glass of tonic with lemon bitters, a lemon slice and espresso poured over. It definitely takes a bit to get used to. Kind of reminds me of when you have an Italian espresso and you get the lemon rind with the side of sparkling water. Imagine all of that immersed in a drink with lots of ice and I think there was some sweetener added too. The chocolate chip cookies here are a signature offering. They are very buttery, large chocolate chunks and on the denser side. Very delicious, I wonder if it's possible to heat those up.. I think that would give it that special touch. All in all, it's nice to have another option in this area.

Yelp
Just came to Black Fox Coffee to chill and kill some time while around the Grand Central area, and I saw Black Fox Coffee's outdoor seating and came here on a whim! I ordered the lemon bundt cake and the olive oil citrus bundt cake and both were so delicious! The lemon one was sweet and tart, and even my husband enjoyed it, and he isn't a huge fan of lemon! The olive oil citrus bundt cake was mildly sweet and tasted more like olive oil versus citrus. I came here a second time and ordered the avocado egg toast. The avocado tasted super fresh and the eggs were delicious as well! However, not even the runny yolks could successfully soften the hard sourdough bread! The crust made it difficult to enjoy the meal. Cutting hard bread with plastic cutlery was borderline embarrassing given how much effort I put in to slice a poor-looking slice of bread. However, when I was able to get everything together, it was *chef's kiss*. Overall, Black Fox Coffee was a nice hole-in-the-wall cafe with some indoor and outdoor dining! If I have to kill time around the Grand Central area, I know I would come back here again.

Yelp
Their cold brew was so strong, it opened my third eye. Oh, and it also tastes good. My new lunch break coffee stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Walking to a meeting and needed a place to grab a quick bite for breakfast and coffee. Read the yelp reviews and am so glad I stopped in. What would have been a mob scene in a bigger chain coffee shop was smooth efficiency and low stress at 8:45 am. Had the butterscotch latte which was delicious and beautiful. Splurged on the olive oil Bundt cake - so worth it. Will be walking a lot in the city today so will take the whole milk and carb hit. Sat for 15 minutes, wasn't crowded at all. Will definitely stop again when I'm in the area.

Oleg S.

Yelp
I had a chance to get 2 things while visiting NY. Espresso spritz was pretty unimpressive for the price. I would avoid that one at all cost. Their iced lattes are a perfect combination of espresso and the flavoring. I love how they don't go too crazy with the flavor, and it highlights the coffee really well. The shop was small and modern, with some merchandise options available. The service was friendly and I had no complaints there! Amazing random find on the streets! Will definitely be back next time I'm in the city.

Colditz K.

Yelp
People seemed to recommend Black Fox, but it seemed to be primarily for the location vs the quality of the coffee. I stopped by on 2 occasions and the coffee seemed only slightly better than starbucks, but overall it just seemed to be more of a boilerplate corporate coffee vs some bespoke experience.
google avatar

Natasha P.

Yelp
Come for the Matcha, stay for the aesthetics. Super cool, stylish coffee shop. I didn't have a chance to try the pastries but we ordered the matcha latte and chai latte and it was standard. Definitely come here for the specialty lattes, I hear they are pretty good!
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Great coffee - staff is hit or miss. Cute place Strong espresso. Convenient location. Gets very crowded. Could be better with more seating and more pleasant staff.
google avatar

Ben I.

Yelp
Best coffee in the city as of 2024. I get alll of my beans from them. The most exquisite selection
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
Small cute coffee shop with all of your basic coffee offerings. Also have a few pastries. I got a vanilla iced coffee and a matcha donut. Both were very solid 7.5

Andrew D.

Yelp
I love my coffee and came in from out of town looking for that spot that you know from the looks of it makes that cup. It was just what I had hoped for. Went back a few times and ordered some bags of beans to take back home. You can't go wrong here
google avatar

Diane J.

Yelp
I'm not a coffee person, but I'm so glad that I ended up coming here with my friend! Black Fox is a stone's throw away from Grand Central. The inside is very minimalist-- white walls and pale wood. It's a small place with only 4 chairs with wooden counters along the outer perimeter. This was my first time trying a flat white, and I am very impressed. A flat white is a kind of cappuccino originally from Australia. They take the steamed, frothy milk from the bottom of the jug and hold back the foam at the top so you get a velvety texture. I substituted in for oat milk, and it's still super creamy. They also offer seasonal drinks (hot apple cider, etc.) and small pastries.
google avatar

Kaley R.

Yelp
A GEM of a cafe. The inside is SO CUTE and feels super welcoming, even if you can only walk in to grab your coffee and go. The cold brew is *delish* and my friend said the matcha is incredible, which I'm very excited to go back and get. They also have some sort of ginger matcha fizz drink that sounded so refreshing -- in case you're looking for something different on these 100 degree summer days.
google avatar

Andrea F.

Yelp
I got a matcha latte with almond milk. $7.35! They charge $1.50 for milk substitutions. I get it that it's extra for this but this is the most I've ever seen and they don't even list it on the menu, which I think is a little sneaky. Matcha latte was decent, but not worth the price. They do have nice outdoor tables. I'd really give 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
Black Fox has a new location witch has a very nice interior with some seating. They have coffee, pastries and also offer packaged coffee, logo cups and bags to name a few. The butter croissants looked so good that I couldn't resist, so I got one with a latte. The croissant was delicious, flaky on the outside, buttery and rich, it paired well with the latte that had perfect art and the taste was magnificent. They had a large variety of great coffees from roasters all across the US. They even had Ritual coffee, one of the roasters.
google avatar

Ami Y.

Yelp
I'm excited that Black Fox Coffee made it to midtown! I've known about the location downtown, but this location is much more accessible to me. Latte here has a nice espresso kick to it. The shop also offers various kinds of pastries and few seats here and there. I'd love to hang out here with a friend with a cup of coffee in hand. They will give you 25 cent discount if you get your drink in your reusable cup! Some pastries here were from pain d'avignon, and some others it seems like they baked in-house. How awesome!
google avatar

Jinja R.

Yelp
Excellent espresso drinks. Highly recommend the flat white - perfect milk texture, beautifully balanced espresso & milk. Flawless.
google avatar

Ro R.

Yelp
Didn't get any caffeine fix since it was already too late in the day, but got my sweet fix. I was afraid this location's cookies might be different than their downtown location. But nope, they are consistent - still soft and chocolate super melty as though it just came out of the oven. How do you guys do it? I only took off one star because the cashier gave me croissant rather than pain au chocolat, but charged me for the latter. But regardless of this mixup glad they finally opened in midtown.
