On the Grid : Black Heath Meadery

"While Scott’s Addition is home to breweries galore, it’s got one special spot up its sleeve: Black Heath Meadery, the city’s first mead maker. The world’s oldest fermented beverage, mead is made from honey and water. Of course, owner Bill Cavender takes it a step further, experimenting with a number of other ingredients, including apples, grapes, spices, and floral buds. And he does this with an important mission in mind -- to support the region’s local beekeepers and reestablish sustainable beehives. How sweet is that?" - The Frontier Project

Our book club had the BEST time at Black Heath Meadery! From the super easy reservation process to showing up and finding our tables all set up, everything was perfect. The owners and patrons were so friendly—it felt like we were hanging out at a friend’s place! The drink selection was awesome (great prices, too!), but the real star of the night? The honey ginger ale. Seriously, do yourself a favor and try it! We’re so glad we found this little gem in Scott’s Addition and can’t wait to come back. If you haven’t been yet, go check it out—you won’t regret it!

Google
Stumbled across this place and was absolutely blown away upon visiting. The mead was amazing, the owner and regulars were generous and great conversations were flowing effortlessly. The location is eclectic and warm, harboring a friendly local atmosphere even for an out of state visitor such as myself. Hopefully I get the opportunity to visit Richmond and Black Heath much more regularly.

Google
Gotta come try Black Heath's mead! Made from locally-sourced, sustainable honey via Virginia beekeepers. Come sip some and enjoy the good vibes and eclectic music playing in the background. Right in Scott's Addition. Bill is a mead magician. And also super friendly and hospitable. He makes a wide range of delicious nectar and offers a mead for everyone. Session, dry and/or sweet. All packed full of flavor. The slushies are the perfect refreshing, juicy, flavorful drink to cool you down this summer. So if in Richmond , Va., highly recommend you check them out. Make sure to pick up a bottle (or a few) to go! Gotta support this local OG. 🥂

Google
On the hunt for good mead in the Richmond area... and this is it! We chose to come in on a Thursday that ended up being $10 flight day, and ended up sampling the Red Razz, Hands & Feet, End of the Wait Maple, and Anything Goes - Plum. All were fantastic! The maple mead was a bit on the sweeter side, but it was perfectly balanced out with the refreshing lightness of the Hands & Feet mead. Would definitely recommend and definitely stopping back in!

Google
Great mead and friendly service! Tasted a flight, loved the apricot seltzer, berry goode very good as well. Ginger was good, very gingery, as was ginger ale. Mangosteen was fantastic, perfect balance of sweet and spicy, maybe not for everyone. Lots of very unique options, almost all are must-tries if you're into mead, definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

Google
Black Heath Meadery was our first and best stop in Scott's Addition. Bill and his friend Bob were so friendly and gave us an interesting history lesson on Mead. We loved the whole experience.

Google
An amazing selection of mead and beer. A must stop if you’re in the neighborhood and have a taste for something special. Our bartender was Thomas and he was a delight to chat with!

Google
The best mead. Anywhere! A lot of creativity and thought goes into their mead wine and cider. From tasting flights, full pours, or to-go bottles and cans. The atmosphere is groovy, and conveniently located in the Scott’s Addition District of Richmond. #gogetyousome

Yelp
My wife and I have been to Black Heath Meadery many times, and there honestly aren't enough good things we can say about them. Whether you're a seasoned mead enthusiast or just curious to try something new, their selection has something for everyone. Their traditional mead, The Muse, is a standout--smooth, balanced, and a perfect benchmark for what mead should be. It's what we compare all other meads to. But what really makes Black Heath shine is their creativity. Two of our favorites are Berrygood, a blueberry mead that's refreshing and perfect chilled on a warm day, and El Machete, made with smoked pineapple, which pairs amazingly with BBQ. As great as the mead is, the customer experience is even better. The staff treat us like old friends--warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do. They're always happy to answer questions and help you find something you'll love. Black Heath is more than just a place to enjoy a drink--it's a spot where you can relax, chat with friends, and really take your time. In a neighborhood full of options for adult beverages, Black Heath stands out as something unique and memorable. If you're looking for something different from the usual beer or wine, we can't recommend it highly enough

Yelp
If you never tried mead, check this place out! Cute little spot "hiding" in scott's addition. It's cozy inside, there's a bar, a back area, or nice couches by the window. Staff is always really helpful. I always get a flight so I can try new flavors. I feel like there's something here for everyone to try at least once.

Yelp
One of Richmond's coziest spots - the mead is EXCELLENT. If only I could remember the eight different kinds I tried during our time here, since my girlfriend and I split two flights, but everything was just so unique and refreshing. The inside seating area is small, but very homey - our friends and us took up the four chairs by the window and yapped away here for hours and it is honestly a bit of a Richmond core memory for me. The bartender was so attentive and helpful in choosing amidst the multitude of options, and really made sure our experience was exactly what we had hoped for. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Four years had elapsed in a flash before my most recent visit last weekend for the Scott's Addition Collaboration Crawl. My friend mentioned wanting to check them out, and I was happy to go along for the ride. I arrived first and perused their list. I tried two different samples, one of their lavender meads and their Bramble Bee blackberry mead. Both were well done, but Bramble Bee won out for me. Mead is so high in alcohol that 4 ounces is plenty. Expect to pay around $10, which I think is reasonable. Service was perfunctory and there were ample seats. I also loved the daffodils; my favorite flower! Nice touch. I'm sure I'll be back at some point in the next four years.

Yelp
I now follow them on IG, and even several states away- I dream of their delicious meads! I am a sucker for all things honey and a small batch meadery right down the road from my AirBnB was just too easy. We hit them in the middle of the day, right after they opened and were their only customers for about 10 minutes. I tried a flight and bought 2 bottles to take home. Because we drove, we easily shopped to add to my stockpile at home! That raspberry was soooooo good! And Bramble Bee- hmm. Plus I loved the style and vibe. The back room and second bar- so cool. Mural outside & funky fun label art inside- my kind of spot! Highly recommend!

Yelp
A great little spot tucked away in Scott's Addition. The meads are so good, the atmosphere is laid back, and the staff is friendly. If you're in the area, this is a must visit!

Sam K.

Yelp
Not a lot of seating but super attentive service. Large variety of tasty mead. Food was being cooked on the back patio with extra seating. Ordered: - Valhalla [Elderberry] - Rowan's Rest [Bourbon barrel aged] - Hiver [Pear (barrel had mallort in previously)] - Spectrum [Kiwi and Pandan]

Rob B.

Yelp
11/10 spot Great employees and owner, extremely good often changing mead menu, can't say enough good things about Black Heath.

Yelp
Tried 2 flights each with 4 meads. The atmosphere is fun and there was a guy playing music in the back. I really enjoyed the decorations around and the comfortable chairs in the front. The meads were not that sweet like previous meads I have had, so I wasn't crazy about most of the flavors. The EOTW was my favorite it had a sweet honey flavor that wasn't too powerful. My Rankings: 1. EOTW 2. Ginger 3. Fruitcake 4. Pomegranate 5. Celebrate 6. Machete 7. Red Razz 8. Living

Yelp
Esoteric yet excellent beverages, decor/atmosphere, and service. My first time at any meadery in Virginia (and perhaps anywhere in the world), this was a great experience. To get a broad exposure, I ordered the flight mixing two of the less alcoholic seltzers with two full meads (one barrel aged and the other with ginger generously infused). Bill C. was really chill and we enjoyed talking with, and being served by, him. I'd go again any day.
google avatar

Carri C.

Yelp
Highly recommended! The mead choices were diverse-something for everyone. They even had mead slushies and sparkling mead. The bartender was engaging and enthusiastic about the product. The bar is when you first walk inside and there is more seatting in a back room. We bought a couple bottles of mead to go. Fun experience and totally worth checking out. Other bars and breweries nearby.
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
I had a great experience here yesterday. The service was top notch and the Mead was excellent. The atmosphere here is homey and welcoming and I highly recommend checking it out.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
Good price, especially during happy hour! You can get a flight for $10 or a small glass for $5. Chill place to hangout & quick service, overall I just highly recommend Funktastic Meads more since they have more/better flavors. That's where I had mead for the first time & was expecting the same taste here but they we're definitely different so I recommend trying both to figure out your preference as well.
google avatar

Kyla Z.

Yelp
Loved the chocolate raspberry mead and the comfy purple chairs. Next time I want to get the flight and try more.

Yelp
I didn't know what mead was other than seeing it on Game of Thrones, but my visit to this small Scott's Addition Meadery was awesome. The staff was so friendly and I couldn't get over how well utilized the space is. The decor is beautiful and very on theme. The meads are all unique and the owner was so knowledgeable. I had the Toucha-Touch Mead, made for Rocky Horror, and it was the BOMB. Looking for a unique affordable stop on your scott's addition bar crawl? Look no further.
google avatar

Yelp
Staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful! Had their flight by recommendation and took a bottle home. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
If this seems like a fly-by tasting - that's because it is. I visited very briefly just to try it out but I didn't linger. I don't fancy myself a mead drinker but hey - alcohol is alcohol! Two types of meads are available; 4 x 'full strength' and 4 x of lighter carbonated 'Sessions' style. I focused on the 'full strength', with the lighter 'Balaton' being my favorite. Second favorite was the Evangeline, which was somewhat sweet. The place is on the small side. But kudos for being dog friendly; I saw one dog that looks the size of a small horse!

Melissa F.

Yelp
A real special childhood friend and I we able to catch up with each other and decided to check this place out! We had so much fun and was able to pick the owner's brain and had awesome conversations. -And oh, the mead was good too

Yelp
I've been here 3 times now and I'm upping my review to 5 stars. My only qualm was with price ($15 for a half-bottle) but they do have full 750ml bottles of their original Muse mead for $22, which I think is a lot more reasonable. I love Muse, which is their traditional mead, semi-sweet but still very, very smooth compared to wine. You can definitely taste that honey. Brumble Bee is also excellent, tasting more like wine but with plenty of sweetness. Berry Good was my least favorite of the three and even that was pretty good. Sweet and smoother than most wines, although it was the most wine-tasting of them. Brumble Bee and Berry Good are 14% abv and Muse is 12%, so they'll get you nice and buzzed (ehhhhh see what I did there?). They also sell jars of honey! This is the stuff they used to make their mead, grown at their own bee farms here in Virginia. 1 pound jars are $18. Black Heath Meadery is perfectly situated in Scott's Addition, amongst all the breweries and cideries, in a cozy building with comfy chairs to chill in. Their flights are normally $14 but are $10 on Thursdays ("Flight Night"). Everyone at the counter has been friendly and provided excellent service.

Yelp
Staff are the tits and the space itself is inviting. We were able to bring our pup with us to cool herself on the concrete floors as we chatted about mead and had some samples. The team is attentive and knowledgeable about the mead as a product as well as the process by which it's made. They even have a mead slushy option or two too cool you off. Go, visit. You'll have a time time. This area is a fan of sweet things and you'll find several here. We aren't actually fans of sweet meads, preferring the drys, but we enjoyed the experience and think you will too. Top notch service from an authentic team busting with personality.

Yelp
Had a great time here. First time trying mead and it was a pleasant experience. I recommend.

Yelp
Visiting the Richmond area for a work event, I had a little bit of time to kill. On a whim, I ducked into the Black Heath Meadery. Their location is a little hard to find -- on a small street, and tucked out of the way. But, once you've discovered it, you're in luck. The bar area, or tasting area, is small. I may actually have a larger bar in my house. It seats only about 8 people, though a couple of tables scattered around may about double that. They have available at any given time about a dozen different meads you can try, many of which are also available as a flight. Of course I had a flight. Every one of the meads I tried was really, really good, so much so that I bought three bottles, something I wasn't planning on doing. I brought them home, and shared one the next night with my fiancee. In a couple of days, the other two were gone as well: they were so good we had to drink them -now.- Their mead selection changes constantly. Apparently, they like to experiment with different flavours and ingredients, and according to the bartender, they may make batches as small as five gallons. So, you might not find the same mead there twice, and he who hesitates is lost. Indeed, while I was there, they had a new mead that was out and had only six bottles left. The couple next to me bought two, I snagged one, and in the next half hour, two other people came in and bought one each (they limited it to one per person). I imagine that last bottle wasn't there for long -- and it was GOOD. Prices were great, too. The only thing I would like to see them add are some snacks of some sort, and perhaps some bottles of water.

Yelp
A very unique, lesser known, find in Scott's Addition! I'd never had mead before and was pleasantly surprised at the variety of sweet, dry, and different flavors! The place is tiny, but surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening. The decor is very artsy and they have games (Connect Four types) to enjoy while you drink. There's a rather large menu, but descriptions to help you know what to expect. And the bartender will help you find the drinks that meet your needs. I recommend getting a flight. The only gripe I have is that the mead isn't all cold. Sounds like some are better room temp, but regardless I had hoped for cold bottles to enjoy. I'm not sure if it was that they weren't prepared for the size of the crowd or if they just don't typically have cold bottles available to open on site. Either way, I'd have liked nicely chilled mead.

Yelp
I have been meaning to stop here for a long time, and I am so glad to have finally gotten in. Mead is a fermented honey wine. Black Heath's tasting room features friendly staff / owners who are very willing to share tastes of several varieties as you decide on what you want to sit and sip in a larger quantity. On this particular day, there were seven varieties of mead on tap and others available by the bottle. They ranged from fruity sweet to almost savory, so if you stop in ask questions and read the descriptions. Single pours are $7, a flight of four half pours are $14 if you want a good cross section. Bar seating and three chair groupings a few feet away. Atmosphere is unrushed and comfortable. Perfect for out of town guests or just kicking off a day with friends. Four stars for the experience, but I wish more of the varieties on tap had been available by the bottle.
google avatar

JuliA S.

Yelp
We tried every single 12% mead on the menu and loved all of them! Will be back again for sure!
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
I loved this place! The decor is nice and they have these pretty purple pouffy chairs. I really experienced a lovely variety of tastes in the flight I ordered. Very different from each other. Staff are very nice. They have a well thought out adaptation to our covid-19 pandemic and felt safe. I will definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely amazing experience. Tasting deal was incredible and you only want more. The lavender mead was my favorite by far. Also, as a gluten free person ALL MEAD IS GOUTEN FREE!!!
google avatar

Harrison T.

Yelp
What the heck is mead?? I didn't know until a friend introduced me to this fermented honey spirit that tastes like beer & wine had a child. Tbh I hate beer & wine separately...but this refreshing drink is the best of both worlds(gluten-free too!!) The ambience of this hole-in-the-wall is laid back and warm. A great place to chill out if you're not in the mood for over-crowded neighboring breweries and 21 yr olds. They are very dog-friendly (ask for a water bowl for the pooch) and have outdoor seating with live music frequently! The menu is ever-changing, but one of my favorites is the pomplemo! If you like grapefruit, this is the one to get! One of their new concoctions was the Guava Passion Vietnamese Honey Bear...and holy. That's a drink I could have everyday. Its the most unique of them all because its a smoothie consistency, so GREAT for a summer day! Will be returning so I can enjoy that one all summer long
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful environment, awesome mead, and good times here! We had a flagon of mead and tried some wonderful flavors. End of the Wait is like a honey dessert in your mouth!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
For those of you that don't know, mead is the oldest known alcoholic beverage that dates back to 9000 B.C. It's created by fermenting honey with water. To make more flavors, various fruits, spices, grains, or hops can also be added. With that out of the way, a friend kept talking about Black Heath and the whole time, I thought she was talking about a meatery. Lol. So being that I love alcohol just as much as I love meat, I still decided to check it out. I was with 3 other people and when we arrived to Black Heath, it was about 30 minutes before they opened. It was a nice day out so we just decided to wait. Luckily not even 2 minutes later someone opened it up and let us in! Awesomesauce! The inside was kind of small, but welcoming and cozy. It has a funky hipster vibe with a little mix of chic decor. They were also playing reggae that day. It's a truly unique atmosphere. Another cool thing is that there are outlets under the bar so you can charge your electronic device. As for the mead, I must say, I'm not a fan of honey at all and even though the taste of honey is very pronounced in most of their beverages, I enjoyed everything that I sampled. Speaking of samples, they don't have flights, but samples were free. Best of all, their mead is potent! I believe most of them were 14%! All in all, with so many craft breweries and a couple cideries in the area, it's nice to have another option. They have something great going on at Black Heath and I think it's just a matter of time until they become overwhelmed with popularity to the point where they might have to expand. Lastly, everyone that works there is super cool, knowledgeable, and down to earth.
google avatar

Javier M.

Yelp
Of all the places we visited in Richmond, Black Heath is definitely on the MUST COME BACK list! This is the type of mastery that gets you excited about mead. Nearly every mead we tried lived our spirits. I remember telling my friends that these are the type of bottles you save for special occasions. Their space is beautiful, albeit small, but this lends to a great intimacy for a great relaxing evening. You must visit this place!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I came for their four anniversary weekend. The staff were really friendly and knew a lot about their mead. All of their mead was delicious! I appreciated their general dry yet floral character. It was all delicious!
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
I don't know much about mead but that doesn't matter. The staff here is incredibly helpful asking me what flavors I like, telling me what is popular and seasonal. They guided me to a delicious flight and told me all about mead. They have a nice inside and a really well spaced out outdoor area with plenty of tables. It is a little expensive but an awesome change of pace from the breweries in the area.
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
Mead an unexplored alcohol with a wonder of possibilities. At Black Heath Meadery you can explore many of them. Staff are enthusiastic, masks worn by staff, social distancing respected except by Otis the Meadery mascot. We managed to snag a spot in the front window, seating avail in the back as well as the patio behind the building. Will recommend and will return...
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I am by no means a connoisseur of mead. I described it to my friends and family as "honey beer" which is not even close. Mead is closest to wine but even at that would be in a class of its own. The space is really cool. Dark but warmly lit. Trendy. Comfortable spaces to sit and enjoy. The wonderful young lady behind the counter was so knowledgeable (I am blanking on her name). She truly made the experience. She described every choice and equated it to our wine preferences. Prices are reasonable. Around 7$ a glass. They don't offer any food selections...bummer. BUT DOG FRIENDLY!!! Give this place a try. Really cool experience. Lovely staff. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Lovely little place. Great choices and comfy atmosphere. Really enjoyed that they had flights as well as to go bottles.

Yelp
Amazing people and amazing mead!! love the atmosphere and You can always expect a good conversation if you come in with good energy
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Love the cozy feel of this place. My only previous experience with mead had been at renn faires. This "wine made with honey instead of grapes" is made partially from farm honey from their own bees. The bartender was able to steer me towards a lighter, more carbonated, less syrupy selection with the Autumnal Armenian. I look forward to returning for a $10 Thursday flight night!
google avatar

Yelp
I went to Black Heath Meadery on 8/20/18 while exploring the Richmond area. I was a little concerned when my Uber driver dropped me off. The outside of the meadery doesn't look like much. I walked and in was greeted fairly quickly. After speaking with the bartender, I choose to purchase a tasting of their honey wine. I had tried mead at a few other places over the years. It often seemed to sweet for me to enjoy it. However, Black Heath Meadery changed my perspective on this adult beverage. The taste profiles they offered ranged from spicy to sweet. Unfortunately, my favorite mead was not available in a bottle. The only reason I cannot give Black Heath Meadery a higher rating is their ambiance is well, a little lacking. By the time I left so many people had arrived it was hard to move around in the Black Heath Meadery space. I felt a little guilty lingering at the bar with some many people standing around. Hopefully as Black heath Meadery establishes itself, it considers getting a larger space so people can comfortable drink their mead. In a nutshell, not a great place to linger but worth a stop for the novice to the advance mead drinker.
google avatar

Yelp
August 2018, four out of five. We stopped here while visiting breweries in the area. We found that Mead can be a great change-of-pace. The venue is fairly small but by the time we were into our tastings had gotten quite busy. The Mead was good but the service was even better. The bartenders were both knowledgeable and the place had a great atmosphere. We didn't love everything we tried but everything was was very interesting and you could absolutely tell that a lot of thought had been given to it. Plus there were several excellent varieties. If you find yourself in that area it's well worth the trip.
google avatar

Leigh P.

Yelp
I went to Black Heath Meadery on Tuesday and I will definitely be returning. The staff are very knowledgeable and they don't mind telling you about some of your favorites if you ask. It's a small location, but the space is perfect. There are even some hives at the locations so don't be freaked out if you see a honey bee or two flying around.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Max was great and so patient and accommodating of our group! The environment is very comfortable and taking all precautions for covid. The mead was great, but the customer service was even better. Check out Black Heath Meadery!
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
I love this place. The owners are welcoming and willing to spread their knowledge of meads. Don't let the lack of a tasting room prevent you from experiencing some of the best meads in Virginia. They have quite a selection available for tasting and are always experimenting. If you're in the area brewery hopping this is a must stop.
google avatar

Austin M.

Yelp
I have only been here one time, but I shouldn't do it, but part of the reason I am giving 5 stars is because of what friends have shared with me about this place. The one time I came here was because of a birthday get together for a friend, and it was a neat little place. There wasn't a lot of room inside, but it seemed fine for the amount of people that were there. I have never had a mead, nor had I heard about it until seeing the Bud Light commericals. The mead was pretty good and I ended up getting two different flights while I was there. I wanted to try different flavors and there were some that I really didn't care for. Like any alcoholic drink it is all up to whomever is drinking it and what they are into. I know there were a couple flavors I liked and would try again the next time I go there. I recommend that you get the flights if you are not sure what it is going to taste like or if you have not had mead before. It was a nice place and the people working were glad to share information about the mead, and the flavors and the process of making it.

Yelp
It might be easy to miss this small meadery but if you enjoy well crafted mead it's a destination to look for in Richmond! The Black Heath tasting room/retail space is tiny but charming, and it's not atmosphere you're here for anyway - it's the mead, and with around half a dozen varieties generally available there's something here for every palate from richly sweet to crisply dry. Our tasting started off sweet, with a traditional pure honey mead, then came variants including figs, blackberries, hops, and even a gin barrel mead! Bill, the brewer and our tasting host, provided a welcoming and educational mead experience that perfectly illustrates the hospitality and exuberance one tends to encounter in creative businesses all over Richmond. If you'd like to discover what happens when local agriculture, ancient traditions and modern creativity come together, stop by Black Heath!
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
What a great place with delicious mead! The mead is expertly balanced between sweet and dry, not falling into either the dessert or dry, white wine style. Lovely flavors came through on all offerings available for tasting. A very nice option for taking your time sipping and enjoying. I will definitely be back when I visit RVA again.
google avatar

Ken R.

Yelp
Really cool place for some mead tasting. Not only are meaderies few and far between, but not many are as good as this place. It's a small place and offer tastings of what they currently have available - the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. If you have never tried mead (fermented honey) this a great place to start.
google avatar

Yelp
there's no A/C. so be prepared to sweat! especially on a hot day in richmond it'll be really hot inside. they're dog friendly inside which is nice and the staff is cool, the prices are reasonable as well. only giving 3 stars because we were dripping in sweat inside lol.
