Visiting the Richmond area for a work event, I had a little bit of time to kill. On a whim, I ducked into the Black Heath Meadery. Their location is a little hard to find -- on a small street, and tucked out of the way. But, once you've discovered it, you're in luck.
The bar area, or tasting area, is small. I may actually have a larger bar in my house. It seats only about 8 people, though a couple of tables scattered around may about double that. They have available at any given time about a dozen different meads you can try, many of which are also available as a flight. Of course I had a flight.
Every one of the meads I tried was really, really good, so much so that I bought three bottles, something I wasn't planning on doing. I brought them home, and shared one the next night with my fiancee. In a couple of days, the other two were gone as well: they were so good we had to drink them -now.-
Their mead selection changes constantly. Apparently, they like to experiment with different flavours and ingredients, and according to the bartender, they may make batches as small as five gallons. So, you might not find the same mead there twice, and he who hesitates is lost. Indeed, while I was there, they had a new mead that was out and had only six bottles left. The couple next to me bought two, I snagged one, and in the next half hour, two other people came in and bought one each (they limited it to one per person). I imagine that last bottle wasn't there for long -- and it was GOOD.
Prices were great, too. The only thing I would like to see them add are some snacks of some sort, and perhaps some bottles of water.
