Police Seek Help Tracking Down Violent Men Who Robbed LA Street Vendors | Eater LA

"Now returning as Black Hogg Sandwiches, the concept is a hybrid day-and-evening experience that marries what Sopressata and Ohana Poke Co. did well with some of chef Eric Park’s best dishes from the Black Hogg days." - Farley Elliott

Google
Stopped by the Frederick location of Black Hog BBQ and was seriously impressed. The spot is in a great area—surrounded by tons of shopping and super easy to get to. Parking was a breeze with a big lot, and there’s lots of outdoor seating if you want to enjoy your meal outside. Inside, the restaurant looks fantastic. It’s clean, well-decorated, and has a welcoming vibe. One of my favorite touches? The open kitchen—always great to see the team working their magic. The menu is just right: plenty of options without being overwhelming. The bar is fully stocked, and the drink menu has tons of variety for any taste. Now, on to the main event—the food. I had the Arkansas Brisket (burnt ends), sliced brisket, and pulled pork. Every bite delivered. The burnt ends were melt-in-your-mouth tender and flavorful. The sliced brisket had that perfect smoke, a great bark, and tons of flavor. The pulled pork? Just delicious—juicy, well-seasoned, and full of that classic BBQ taste. I also grabbed a side of mac and cheese—simple and comforting, exactly what you’d hope for alongside great BBQ. What really stood out to me was the simplicity. No over-the-top sauces or crazy seasonings—just honest, well-smoked meat done right. Hands down, the best BBQ I’ve had in Maryland. If you’re anywhere near Frederick, this place needs to be on your list. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Google
Not bad at all for a chain, you can see whoever handles the smoker knows what he's/she's doing. I got the two meat platter to go. The two briskets - Texas and sauced burnt ends - with tater salad and baked beans. It also comes with a tiny cup of slaw, pickles and onions, and a piece of cornbread. Frankly, everything was good to great. The sauces were really nice, sides definitely above average from most BBQ joints I've tried, cornbread good. My only possible gripe was that the brisket was a little dry, I should have asked for fatty meat. But the smokiness was on point. And my order was ready lightning fast. I didn't order in advance or anything and got my order in less than 5 minutes. Impressive, and the quality was there too.

Google
This was My first time at a Black Hog BBQ. I was greeted very friendly and quickly as I entered. I was seated by a hostess and then a waiter came to take my order. The food came fast and it was hot. They offered a gender fluid restroom to wash my hands that was clean. They have a Bar which is great if You want some alcohol. The outdoor seating may be closed for the winter but they have plenty of indoor seating. The food was good.

Alissa S.

Google
Not just great BBQ, but they also have a rooftop bar behind main bldg. LOVE the rooftop. It was delicious and fun. Highly recommend.

Google
The service was great and the atmosphere was good. The prices seem comparable but the food left a little to be desired. The burnt ends had too much sauce on them. The smoked pork was really smoky tasting. None of the sauces had heat and pretty much tasted the same. The greens were very good. The coleslaw was good, not over sauced, could use a little horseradish for my liking. I don't think I will be going again, I've had better.

Google
Food usually is consistent - today it was still good but not as tasteful. Great customer service - yams were on point. Went there with a fam of 6. Four adults and two kids spent about $90. Ordered Arkansas brisket that came with 2 sides, chicken wings, side of sweet potatoes, cheese and pork fries, cheese burger and side of cornbread.

Google
Dominic was wonderful and provided fantastic service. He has a beautiful blend of friendly, professional service with great timed visits to the table. The meats where fabulous and good portions. The sides where ok but not my favorite. Over all, highly recommend.

Google
Best Mac n Cheese in Frederick! Had the gumbo too and that was pretty dang good!! The brisket here is top notch!

Yelp
Once I entered the establishment I was seated. The server came asked our drink order and made some recommendations of what to eat from the menu "Texas Brisket" yum for sure and the "wet ribs" yum. My thoughts are stop in and try the food for yourself.

Yelp
Excellent barbecue last night at Black Hog BBQ. Amazing ribs, tender brisket and pulled pork. Their homemade sauces are perfect.

Yelp
Service: Very friendly and attentive. I always enjoy being called sweetie or honey. Burnt ends are the best! This time around I tried the triple meat mofo sandwich and it was excellent! The pit ham really surprised me how good it was. Nice amount of fries that are crispy and perfectly salted. My friend loved the dry ribs, "the meat just fell off the bone". My buddy enjoyed the mustard wings and I took home buffalo wings for the wife which she enjoyed. She did think the drums were a tad dry, but that could have been because they had to be reheated after a 1.5hr car ride. I wish they had more dessert offerings and had a spicy and/or more smoky BBQ sauce. It's always a chill vibe and a great spot after paintballing.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the brisket was cooked great. The sweet potato side was very good! The Mac and cheese and corn bread could use a little more love. But great BBQ! The service was great! The ambiance was very chill not much going on. Would come back again for BBQ if in the area!

Yelp
This place has the best dry rubbed ribs I've ever had. The wife who is watching her carbs always gets some pit meat. The sides are always good. The place is fast casual and you can usually get in and out fairly quickly.

Amber P.

Yelp
I usually really enjoy Black Hog but this order was a miss. The brisket is nothing but fat and they gave my husband pulled pork instead of the chopped pork. I know some people enjoy really fatty meat but I don't. The Arkansas burnt ends, collards, and sweet potatoes are good, though.

Drew L.

Yelp
Purchased a brisket sandwich and was told a side came with my sandwich. When I checked out the receipt listed French fries at &1.25 so they were not included The brisket was extremely tough and the fries were overcooked I guess the most shocking thing was the price $20.53 an exorbitant price for a subpar sandwich. Would recommend if you want poor food at a very high price

Yelp
I forever love Black Hog! I will always refer people to here when they want bbq. Ironically I thought I was ordering a pulled pork bbq sandwich but I ordered a pulled pork platter and was still pleased! The pulled pork is juicy abs flavorful, the mac and cheese is nice and creamy and the potato salad is my favorite! The potato salad is perfectly seasoned, has eggs in it and it's just so amazing! Tip: Get all 3 sauces and mix them together...amazing flavor bomb!

Yelp
Service was a bit on the slower side and I could've used a water refill but I have to say that the food was next level. The burnt ends brisket which I believe is called the Arkansas brisket and the sides were very good. The ambiance was consistent with other BBQ locations, pretty laid back with the common utensils and presentation. The service could be an issue but they were pretty busy so given the savory servings I think this location deserves 5 stars.

Yelp
this is a great place to get barbecue. The food is always hot. At least when you get it. I would not recommend taking the fries home. They never taste good reheated. I love the pull pork. Services is always very good and they move very quickly. There's indoor and outdoor seating in this place is always pretty clean.

Yelp
I had high expectations when I came here for lunch the other day. My experience at the Middletown location about a month ago was excellent. However, my experience at this location left me wanting. Staff and service were quite nice. The outdoor seating area was fantastic--especially in the beautiful Autumn weather. We were welcomed warmly and our sever was extremely nice and attentive. But the food just didn't measure up. The bbq was lukewarm/cold and dry when it arrived. The fries were lukewarm and soggy. I considered sending everything back, but the issues were so pervasive, I decided to chalk this up to an off day and to give it another go sometime in the future.
google avatar

Juanita B.

Yelp
Super mediocre bbq. I had the brisket, chicken, Cole slaw, and Mac and cheese. It was not dry but had no seasoning. The bbq sauce wasn't great either. If you're from down south you're not going to be too impressed. If you are on a bland diet you will love it here.

Yelp
Went in last night, Friday, and was disturbed by staff behavior. Witnessed a male server and the female bartender having words. My family and I couldn't hear what the bartender said but we definitely heard the attitude from the male. We also watched as the bartender try to compose herself and apologize to us when I made eye contact with her. He was rude and it made us very uncomfortable. Upon coming to yelp today I see a previous comment about him. Maybe management needs to do something?

Jane S.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and man what a shit show. Only thing keeping my friends and I coming is Kim. Only time I feel like I am welcomed, not rushed or have to hear about personal drama. The one older lady seems like she's lost most of the time. New guy with ponytail I'm not sure what's going on but he seems arrogant and spends his time at the host stand. I never like making reviews but it needed to be said. Been coming for years and it's not getting better. Other than a few upgrades to the restaurant itself and fixing the staff issues I love coming to this location!

Yelp
Came here with my husband, cousin, sister, and brother. We shared two family trays. It was a lot of food. We had brisket, sausage, ribs, Mac n cheese, beans, potato salad and cornbread. Great staff, nice space, and not bad for a chain. Is it good Southern BBQ? Well, it definitely has potential. The sweet tea and sweet and tangy BBQ sauce was my favorite.

Yelp
My go to meal to get from here is the Luke's Burger with the Texas Brisket on top as the additional meat selection with a side of fries. Alls good and always delicious each time I've had it. I have dined in on one occasion and the food was ready fast and the server was very courteous and explained anything we had as far as questions. It's pretty nice layout and they have a bar if you are into alcoholic beverages.

Yelp
This was our first dining experience post-COVID. The outside seating is first come, first serve. It was mid-afternoon, so the wait wasn't too long, maybe 15 minutes or so. The table and chairs were sanitized before we were sat. Due to COVID, no draft beers are being offered, bottle beers only. The server did let us know in advance that meat prices have increased and we would see an additional charge on our bill. No real complaints about the food, it was just mediocre. The platter portion sizes were very small and I wasn't blown away with either the pork or brisket. Both were slightly dry and lacked the 'smoke' flavor of BBQ. Don't forget to try the sauces. The mustard was my favorite of the three.

Yelp
was pleasantly surprised by the food here. I came with my man looking to get some stir fry from Wok In Wok Out, but it was closed on a Sunday early evening. Black Hog is right next door. It is a fairly large restaurant on a corner of this shopping/dining area. It was a decent evening weather wise, and we wanted to wait for an outdoor table. The staff tried to accommodate us, but even after paying the check, people just weren't leaving. So after a ten minute wait, we chose to get a table indoors. They are a full table service restaurant, which sets them apart from Mission BBQ ( which I really like). There is also a bar. They do have their own sauces on the table to sample like the Mission does. Our waiter was very sweet, and accommodating. And he made sure to check in on us after we had gotten our meals. My grilled (1/2 of a) chicken had a yummy dry rub and was very juicy. The greens and cornbread were pretty good. My man ordered a burger, which was on the smallish side. Liked a whopper Jr size. He said it tasted really good, but it didn't fill him up, even with the cole slaw. We aren't big fries people, so we rely on the proteins to be filling. He wound up eating some of my chicken and agreed it was tasty. We do wish to return to try pulled pork or maybe some ribs next time.

Yelp
LOVED it. I remember my first time going to the Black Hog BBQ on Market Street. This location is relatively new, and it's bright and spacious and CLEAN. Our table was spotless. For a BBQ spot, you expect a little mess but these folks were working hard to clean floors, tables, and chairs between uses. The menu is pretty simple, but that works for me. Less options to choose from means less time spent analyzing my options. I chose the 1/2 chicken with coleslaw. I opted to add on the fries. The portion sizes are huge so definitely come hungry. We left with a doggy bag for later. Our waitress was very attentive and never let my sweet tea get low... Ha. Great customer service and quality here. One thing to note. Their times have changed. They are open 11AM - 9PM daily. Enjoy!

Yelp
Always delish and love the wings , best in town in my opinion , great margaritas too at wormans mill location for sure! Brisket is to die for!

Elias L.

Yelp
I love the three-meat sandwich, i believe it call Mofo, also they have a good deal on Tuesdays for ribs.

Matthew V.

Yelp
I've lived next to this spot for 2 years and never once smelled the smell of meats actively being smoked. I'll let you judge from there...

david b.

Yelp
Third time here and everything was fantastic! I had a Arizona barbecue sandwich and fries. The waiters were attentive 100%.
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
Very easy to call in and take out! Ordered the brisket beef sandwich with a side of Cole slaw and a pulled pork sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Great portion sizes and the meat was cooked very well. We didn't dive into the BBQ sauces too much, but their Kansas City sauce was very good.

Yelp
Was recommended this place and very disappointed. The food quality is just disgusting. The food was very bland and I don't like how it's served. If I would of known they served it the way they did I would just go to mission bbq at less they have better BBQ sauces there. They didn't even give me a bun for my pulled pork just meat in a cardboard thing. The cole slaw was very bland. Also the drinks were very horrible and taste like water. Also my spouse got banana pudding and it was serviced in a too go container like something u get in a hospital cafeteria and it didn't have any flavor to it. The service was great. Really the only thing that was good there. The ambiance was ok but u would expect better and higher quality of food and drinks. It literally taste like something u get in a soup kitchen not something u spend close to 80 bucks on. Highly wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
Im totally hooked. My son is stationed in Frederick, and last time we were here, we visited their location in "downtown". I posted a review on that location also. My mother was getting her hair done across the street from this location, so I went in and placed my order since it was more convenient. In my three day visit, I visited the restaurant twice and ordered enough food to take back to the house with me each time. The pulled pork, brisket, ribs and dry rub wings were our menu items of choice this visit and we were not disappointed. I am still a cheerleader for the bbq vinaigrette dressing you can request with the side salad. And once I added the pull pork to the salad, I was just wishing that my son's time living in the area wasn't coming to an end. I will miss you Black Hog. It was a wonderful experience. Well other than a kids grilled cheese costing $6. That's way to much for what we go. Thank you

E J.

Yelp
The atmosphere is nice & simple. The Texas beef brisket was one of the worst meats with heavy fat. The sides were kind of old. I don't recommend this place to enjoy BBQ beef. The service is good.
google avatar

Joel L.

Yelp
Consistent quality delivered in a casual setting. This place delivers, even the sides are above average. Much better than the local chain that over promises and under-delivers.
google avatar

Zoomy I.

Yelp
Unfortunately, these were some or the worst wings I've ever had. There was barely any meat on the full rack I ordered. The two stars is (versus 1) was because their sandwich was half decent, and their cashier was friendly. Not sure why they call their sandwich "they don't have the meat', we do". Probably would have tasted better if their rack was done better.
google avatar

Charles I.

Yelp
Good food! My wife and I ordered takeout from here and the food was overall very good. The mac and cheese was not good, but the brisket, ham, chicken and the collard greens were very good. I was also pleasantly surprised with the potato salad and that is one thing that is hard to find good at restaurants. Also, the gumbo, while different to me considering I grew up in a family from Louisiana, was actually good. The used the smoked meats in it which gives it a bit of a smokey flavor to it, but I enjoyed it.
google avatar

Nick9802 ..

Yelp
I was very impressed with the food here. I had the ribs and tasted a friends "Arkansas" brisket and I can honestly say this was the best bbq I've had in a restaurant in quite some time. My sides were the greens which had a lot of "soul".... also very impressed by. The mac and cheese was also damn good and the sweet tea was awesome. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone in the Frederick, MD area.

Lauren M.

Yelp
I was in the mood for some sort of bbq style food and my sister suggested Black Hog. Upon arriving, we were seated VERY close to the table behind us who had just sat down. So much so, that the other table asked to be reseated (don't blame them, we probably would have asked too if they hadn't). Everything on the menu is sold a la carte. I paid over $10 for one sandwich and added a side of Mac and cheese for $2.50. If you want fries, it's $3.50. Good thing I didn't want anything to drink except water. The pulled pork sandwich I got did have a decent amount of meat. Could have used more slaw for it though. Lunch for just my sister and I was almost $40 including tip. The server was really nice and attentive, but I don't think I'll be returning. Mission BBQ is a much better value with equally, if not better food.
google avatar

Alexander P.

Yelp
The brisket, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, greens, and cornbread were great. I messed up when ordering the Luke's Burger with Brisket. The server asked if I wanted everything on it which included mustard, mayo, ketchup, LTO, and I said yes. Unfortunately, those items overpowered the burger. Next time I'll stick with the burger, brisket, cheese, and bbq sauce. I'm right outside of DC so I won't be taking that trip again soon but if you're out that way, definitely check this spot out.
google avatar

Brenda H.

Yelp
If you are around the area looking for something to eat, look no further and go to Black Hog. Their sandwiches and sides are good portion size and delicious! I had a pulled pork sandwich with fries. I can't wait to try their brisket next time. Their service is also superb. Our server Lisa made sure our cups were filled and always asked if we needed anything. Definitely wished I had more room for dessert.

John H.

Yelp
The new location is nice, bigger. The bbq is still good, as before. This time I somehow like the brisket although the dry rub ribs are still my favorite.
google avatar

Dana Z.

Yelp
For a chain bbq place, it was pretty good. Usually I'm not very impressed by other chain type bbq places I've tried and this one was a step up. I had the carolina pork sandwich - my usual bbq go to item - and it was great. The fries were just ok, as were the sauces they have. (The mustard sauce and original bbq sauce were a little on the watery/liquidy side for me). Still I thought the food overall was good and they have a nice outdoor section too. I'd go back and try other things on their menu

Roy's R.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Great customer service. Food is amazing. Ordered ahead and food was ready upon arrival.

Yelp
We were in town and finally got a chance to stop over at this place we've seen many times before. Our waiter Cosimo was very knowledgable and helped out a lot. He made sure to mention the southern greens which were better than accepted (spicy and not overly cooked). The pork shoulder and brisket were spot on. The sweet potato side (not on the menu) was good and my mother-in-law was happy that it wasn't overloaded with nutmeg. The burgers everyone had were fantastic and the kids loved their grilled cheese as well. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Ribs are amazing!!!!!! And they are super nice to military! Thanks for the support!!!
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
Black Hog has some of the best BBQ around! There's a variety of meat and sauce options and something that everyone will love. I personally love their vinegar based BBQ! The Carolina Chopped is my favorite meat option. I usually go for that with a side of Mac and cheese, because you can't have BBQ without Mac and cheese! They also have a bar that's stocked with a decent beer selection and your usual drink options. Service is fast and friendly at this location. If you can't street park, there's plenty of parking in the back.

Yelp
While in Frederick for 2 weeks on travel I ended up eating here *quite* a few times. The food is just outstanding. It is a bit on the more expensive end, so it may not be the best bargain around. That being said it is worth the price for the food. The rough-cut brisket (Burnt Ends) is some of the best I have ever had. Fantastic bark on the meat, cooked perfectly, and the right amount of sauce. The standard brisket is meh. Not bad, but not worth getting over the other great choices. Dry ribs are very good. Great flavor, not super salty (although they look like they might be at first glance) and more on the lean side than the wet ribs. Wet ribs are where you want to be. These have that flavor you've been looking for. Outstanding. The greens are also worth getting. Basically a bowl of green bacon flavored yumminess disguised as leaves. Cornbread side is average. Coleslaw could use a fair amount of work. Sub-par. It's not gross, but it just lack next to all that amazing meat. The "They don't have the meats, we do" sandwich is also a worthy contender to try out. This thing is great. Amazing flavors jammed between two buns. After eating here about 6 times in two weeks, I have to say the best option in my book is the burnt ends with wet ribs combo.

Yelp
I've been wanting to find a decent bbq place in the area and wanted to give this place a try. Ok, I ordered the pull pork sandwich. They give the BBQ sauce on the side so you can pick which sauce you want, which seems pretty cool. The meat was very tender but had a few pieces of fat in it. The mac & cheese was so bland and dry. Same goes for the cornbread, just dry. Maybe I just got an old piece. A tad bit pricey for what I got.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
The food was excellent, we had Gumbo, smoked ham, pork, brisket, greens and Mac and cheese. One waitress worked very hard to keep everyone happy but the survive was just a little slow, chalk this up to covid, someone called off sick. Christine was our waitress and she did a great job.

Reed M.

Yelp
We just left and are so full of some of the best bbq I've had in a few years. The Triple Meat Mofo, the ribs, the sweet potatoes, potato salad, beans were put of this world. I'm from North Carolina and I have high standard for BBQ. HARD RECOMMEND

Mike N.

Yelp
I'm a Minnesota transplant through 15 years in the Colorado rocky mountains, have been coming to Frederick since 2013, 14? Anyway - the Black Hog (the original on Market) was the first restaurant I ate at and the BBQ blew me away, the people - the atmosphere - just an all around great experience... that was then, and now - this is now... I moved to Frederick permanently in 2017, and life, work, everything always gets in the way so it was probably when I had out-of-town visitors later '17, maybe early 2018 that I finally had a chance to make it back to one of my favorite Frederick eateries - and sure enough, was not disappointed and my guests were impressed... Again, life gets in the way - I had been living out in Ballinger Creek and in mid 2018 I had an opportunity to buy a home, in Wormans Mill, and it came with the pleasant surprise of having my very own Black Hog in my backyard... The Brisket, the pulled chicken or pork, their wings - really can't make a mistake no matter what you order. I like the fact that I have a few friends stop over and sitting out back on the deck and the urge hits - just call the Hog, give them my order, jump in the car and 20 minutes later we are all enjoying the best BBQ in Frederick. B.H. - thanks for never disappointing me...

Shawn S.

Yelp
Shorebird location: Pros: Location is clean and nice, music not loud. Staff nice. Cons: Meats (Flavorless), Baked beans--worst I have ever had. Ordered 1 Pound of ham and Triple meat MOFO sandwich to go.

Rich B.

Yelp
Food was worth 4 stars maybe 5 stars, but the server we had (Dominic) cost them a star. Perhaps one of the worst servers I've ever had. The other servers who helped out, were very pleasant and easy to deal with. The Triple Mofu sandwich was outstanding (fries were cold - also cost them a star, but not as cold as Dominic). Arkansas brisket, pulled pork, cole slaw, sweet potatoes, and other food my party had were all very good. We'll be back at some point. However, if we get seated with Dominic, we'll be the rude ones and either ask for a different server or simply walk out. Plenty of other places to eat next door, across the street, or down the block; but I will NOT ever interact with Dominic again.

Yelp
Had very high hopes as this place has gotten some great reviews. Let me start off by saying they should really be pickier with their staff. The cashier was not well trained and not very friendly at all. When we asked if we could have a pulled pork sandwich meal...the answer was simply no. Maybe she could have recommended getting the sandwich and just adding a side. So we ended up getting a 2 meat platter wth two sides and just asked the server for a roll and made our own pulled pork sandwich. Can this place not just add a pork sandwich meal to the list of meal options? Seems simple enough, right? We opted for the Mac and cheese and coleslaw...figured we couldn't go wrong...but it was wrong...all wrong. Coleslaw was chopped to smithereens, watery, salt less, just plain gross. The Mac and cheese was equally bad. The brisket was dry. The only O.K. Food item was the chopped pork. We ate it with a roll and added sauce. We will not be back. Maybe the one in downtown Frederick is better, cause I so wish to find a great BBQ spot in town.

Yelp
I've been to the original Black Hog downtown and thought it was overhyped. Good but not great. But today I was craving bbq and decided to stop by the new branch since it's an exit away from home. Maybe it's only because I was starving or maybe they're eager to impress at the new store but my smoked beef brisket sandwich was phenomenal! 4 big slices of tender meat and a spicy, flavorful sauce- I used the bun to sop up every bit of that sauce. I got sweet potatoes and collard greens for my sides and they were delicious as well. The greens were flecked with ham and hot sauce and the sweet potatoes were cooked and seasoned perfectly. They even had tres leches in the dessert case, which I of course had to pick up. I haven't tried it yet since I'm so stuffed I can barely type but I'm looking forward to it later tonight!
