A Chicago Bar Preps for Cold Weather Service During COVID-19 | Eater Chicago

"A suburban Willowbrook brewery noted as the only Black-owned brewery in the state, whose founder discussed how older white suburban customers have responded to the nationwide anti-racist 'Black Is Beautiful' beer by echoing the slogan as they order it; the profile highlights the brewery’s cultural visibility and the founder’s perspective on customer reactions to the beer and the movement behind it." - Ashok Selvam

Google
Pretty low key brewery with a good vibe. Staff is super helpful and nice. There are games available, tv and pinball machines. It looks dog friendly and you can bring your own food. It really gives me the Denver Craft Brewery vibe, where they focus on beer and have fun events planned through your the month. Small and limited parking though.

William M.

Google
Excellent beer! Had my 34 from a nearby trucking company so I was able to walk over 2 days in a row. Tried several beers and my favorite was Surf King. They also have pizza.

Jerry C.

Google
The place is small with a very small bar set up in an "L" shape and limited parking. They have a few bar games and some TV's to keep you entertained. The staff is very friendly and patient with their clients, too bad I couldn't find a beer that I really enjoyed. The primative perspective double IPA was the only one that I could at least attempt to drink the whole entire 12oz glass, but at $8.00 for a 12oz beer, I couldn't justify it. I only had one beer and went to another place. To me all of their beers were on the sweet fruity side and I'm not a fan of sweet fruity beers. I'll definitely give them another try, I just hope next time I can find a beer that I can truly enjoy. I had previously gave them only ⭐⭐⭐, but not anymore. Update 07/04/2021 What a difference a a year makes, they finally have a variety of good very tasty beers to please just about anyone. They don't all taste the same anymore. They finally have a unique individual taste to all them. My favorite beer is the one with a crazy name "get it, get it, grab it, grab it" which is a hazy IPA, or the Midnight Fistfight. I can honestly say that all of their other beers have improved in tremendously. Good job guys and gals, keep up the good work.

Michael

Google
Really liked the decor. The beer selection was good but just not alot of my personal preference. Derrick was an awesome dude that made sure we were taken care of and gave us alot of info on the beer. I'll be back soon.

This place is pretty great, welcoming environment, really good beer. Great small local business to support. Pretty knowledgeable brewer and staff. They seem to have a nice future!

Google
Great local brewery with awesome beers. Love the atmosphere and the food on the weekends.

Google
Always heard good things, but could it really be that good? YES! My wife and I popped in one Friday afternoon for the first time and the first beer I had was “Out of Our Rinds”, their watermelon gose at the time. Let me just say, AMAZING. Proceeded to taste some of their flagships at the time and they all tasted fantastic. The staff was great, the patrons were fun (one couple was passing out bowls of popcorn, how cool), and the vibe is perfect. We have been coming ever since. Oh and the food trucks each weekend are lights out. Awesome brewery!

Google
Great beers and friendly staff. The Key West lager was delicious!

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now. It's a very laid back and friendly brewery. I'm not an IPA person, but they do have several options. Their Peach Cobbler Sugar Bomb is pretty good. I also enjoyed their beer slushy. They have some pinball games, too.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
This is a nice brewery tucked away just off of I-55. My wife and I stopped in here for a few beers after dinner nearby - it was a Friday night and somewhat crowded but we had a whole table to ourselves. There were plenty of board games and other activities. The staff is very friendly and the beer was good. Will be back!

Yelp
Great experience at Black Horizon Brewing Company. Stopped by for the Streetz Art Alliance event. It was easy to find just off route 83 & 55. Smaller brewery but more than enough room for everyone and the vendors. Beers were good. They offered a couple tastings to help me find something I'd enjoy. Prices in line with other breweries. They are card only. Staff helpful. Parking lot is smaller but there is overflow parking in back. Bathrooms are gender neutral and clean. The vendor shopping was great as was the Pot Pots Poutine truck. Can't hardly wait until they do this again.
google avatar

Dolores Z.

Yelp
Microbrewery, nice selection of tasty beers. Clean, staff was attentive. I sampled their lager, very light, refreshing, and not overly filling. Food was provided by a poutine truck, pretty darn good, with very pleasant people efficiently preparing traditional and innovative food, like the Reuben poutine. Easily accessible from I 55 and Route 83.

Yelp
I frequented over 67 breweries in Illinois and there is a man named Alex who is the head brewer and has amazing creativity there and has a big heart. I initially met Tony who is a Metalhead, kind, educated and a has strong beer recommendations to give all day. Amazing dude, he is the sales manager who doesn't make you feel anything but like you belong. I met who I thought was just a bartender named Derek, this man helped solidify this brewery for me as a top 3. He educated me in beer ingredients, processes and I found out he is one of the other brewers highly knowledgeable and kind. When I visited I met Kevin who greets you kindly and is a guy you must meet. Stephanie a kind woman who is great with people and what she lacks in height she makes up for with a big heart. I'm turning 40 this year and am excited to always meet new faces at this place. Charles is another owner who has his own form of kindness, but all together I love this place. They don't have a kitchen which I love but recently added pizzas which are a decent addition to have with beer. This brewery is such a warm place to stop and visit, their flagship is Midnight Fist Fight which is amazing. There is a great variety of beers. I got to meet the locals and connected with the BHBC regulars who are awesome. I'm a huge fan of the beer and service, it's a black owned brewery and I was stoked to support it. Their merch is I have purchased every shirt, hoodie, and hat they have marketed because Alex, Kevin, Tony, Derek, Steph and others there have made it a home for me. Every time I leave work, I hope to stop by for Alex's new creations. At age 39 I am a fan boy, they get busy sometimes like other breweries. Be patient and enjoy a top pick for product, staff and merch.

Yelp
Beer was good. Had decent flavor. I would have been willing to try more, we were wanting a flight (from out of town and wanted to try a local brewery) but flights aren't offered. We prefer a flight, then choose which we like best and order a full pour. Oh well, not a huge deal. Overall, the place had an unfriendly vibe and the bartender was standoffish and a little rude. It didn't make for a welcoming environment and it definitely didn't make me want to order another beer. We had one beer each and left. We were in town just visiting relatives and I'm not sure we will be stopping back by this place if we were to visit again. Beer was average and service/atmosphere was not great.
google avatar

Shari B.

Yelp
I had no idea about this brewery until I had a pick up food here for another restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was a family friendly brewery. I have a young toddler, so it's nice to know it's ok to stop by during the day to grab a beer. There a board games available and even a couple free arcade games. We will definitely be coming back to this place for more beer and to hang with our little one.

Heather C.

Yelp
This is a great brewery. They have a nice variety of beer, the service is excellent and the place is spotless. The pizza is quite good, $10 during the Bears game the day that we visited. We'll definitely be returning.

Yelp
What a local gem! I'm a malt girl and the Crimson Pact and Smooth Poser were AHHHHMAZING! Seriously, mind blown, best I've ever had! My husband loves IPAs and loved the Come Haze & Peach Fist Fight. Soooo good! On top of all that goodness, Co-Founder Charles took great care of us. What a good guy! Can't wait to go back.

Mary C.

Yelp
Love this place. Great black IPA's. If they would sell wine, we would have stayed for another round.

Greg W.

Yelp
Service and knowledge of the various beers was great. The different beers were fantastic. Quite tasty.

Mark S.

Yelp
Hidden away, beer was okay but the bartender was a total Ahole. As we arrived a taco vendor that was set up was wrapping up so we made our way inside and asked the bar tender if they had any food and he said " well no that would be counter productive wouldn't it?" Dude I dont know how your crappy as place works. I then ordered 2 beers and he said, "woa slow down and tell me again" Im a pretty chill guy so I brushed it off and told him again. He them asked whats your last name? I gave him my last name and he then started to look it up in his system, my buddy had given him his credit card so I then said oh for the tab its a different last name and he said "oh you just changed your last name?" piece of crap learn customer service and how to ask a question. Like whats the last name on the tab? Place was half empty and I see why! Beer ok service is garbage!

Yelp
My home court advantage. This place is fun; good beer and nice people. Whenever I stop in I have a pleasant conversation with other patrons on a variety of subjects. Let's not forget the beer. Comfy Pants - outstanding. The mint chocolate chip stout; off the charts. They prefer plastic over cash and BH does not have a kitchen. There are several restaurants in proximity, and they do have benches outside. Stop in and see my friends. They have good beer and a nice place. Stop in on a Friday afternoon. You will enjoy yourself.
google avatar

Kerry-Ann S.

Yelp
Was driving by on the way to my hotel and saw the sign for a brewery...so obviously I stopped! I was pleasantly surprised by Bartender Shannon and a live music performance (brad? Drew?). Both were as good as the beer-which was amazing!! Love a passionate musician playing to a small room of regulars+me+his mom, whom he introduced me too afterwards. A great atmosphere, great people, and great beer.... What else is there?
google avatar

Marcus E.

Yelp
Tasty barrel aged stout on tap. Lots of other interesting beers. Bartender when we visited right before Christmas was super nice and even gave a mini tour. Nice spot!
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Delicious and wide selection of beer. Cool vibe with the old school video games. I liked that it was spread out and could sit away fro other guests to have a conversation. I would go back to try some more of their beer options.

Yelp
I visited Black Horizon Brewing Co on Saturday, 7/30/22 in the afternoon. I visit craft breweries as a hobby. The location is at the normal industrial park & had adequate parking (with some overflow parking), as well as some outside seating for a nice day. The place has a somewhat grunge heavy metal artsy decor and was lively when I arrived. They looked to be having an art show and art participation program inside. There was one server on duty who was kind and efficient. I found out that they don't do flights but pours of 8oz or 16oz. I tried 3 different brews at 8oz. Overall reasonable price for the 3 & I got a brewery sticker (which I normally do). They have several variants for $1. Wi-Fi was solid with password. The beer was tasty; I tried an orange sour, a schwarzbier & a wheat. All were good. I probably liked the orange sour the most which had a more subdued flavor. All three had very good body. I thought it was a nice visit and I'd return if nearby.
google avatar

Robby K.

Yelp
This was probably my 4th visit to the brewery. Coaxed in after receiving coupons in the suburban clipper magazine. Rare to see a brewery advertise in a such a way. $3 off a flight sounds like a great deal. I was disappointed to find that the flight was only 3 pours.. Using the $3 off, including tip, I paid $10 for 3 tasters... ookkaaayy.. The following week I want to a heavy metal brewery in Romeoville for 8 sample flight for $10! It's their Wednesday special! I was instantly reminded of the not so good deal Black Horizon offered. I love ALL suburban breweries, and I will definitely be back to Black Horizon, but I'll wait for a food truck, or a special release to get me in the door, rather than keeping this one in regular after work rotation.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Another SW suburban brewery that just opened, pretty similar to most breweries, follows the classic format, lots of beers, good variety of choices, several board games to play inside, and this one even has a video game system and a foosball table, one of few breweries I've seen offer that. It has its own parking lot, and is easy to get to, it's right off the Kingery exit on I-55. Both times I went the bartenders have been nice. The first time I ordered the Ghosts in the Fog, and the 2nd time I got the IPA Vol. 10. Both good, but I liked fog better. No food on the menu, but you can bring it in. I'll probably be checking this place out more in the future to try more of their beers.

Yelp
Solid Beer. Huge Space. Friendly staff. What more could you want? My husband and I had been planning an end of the month date night, and Black Horizon fit the picture. With the time change and the sun setting early, this location was a little bit difficult to navigate, but alas, it was discovered at the 8 o'clock hour. What I really was impressed with was the space. L shaped bar right at the back is your center point for staff interaction and to gaze over their list of carefully brewed craft delicacies. A soft blue colored paint weaves throughout the room, while hanging naked light bulbs dance above the counter top. There are several (four) person tables that are scattered and separated enough for more intimate play with your brew mate. The beer, overall, is definitely packed with strong flavors. If coffee is your kryptonite, get the Half to Death. It surprisingly wasn't as rich as I was anticipating it to be, but bold with coffee notes and smooth on the palate. Rich in flavor and beautiful dark brown color, it's going to be on your brain. Their Peachy Keen Cream Ale is a woven venture from the depths of a creative mind - very sweet from the incorporation of sugar but no lingering after taste from the mellowness of the mixed corn flakes. The beers, in general, have a high ABV and range in selection. There really is something for everyone, (no excuses). No food, but check out their website or Facebook for upcoming food truck events. Overall, I think that the intuition of a long lasting establishment has settled nicely into Willowbrook's night life, and it will be interesting to see what will be next...over the horizon. Cheers!

Yelp
We checked out Black Horizon about two weeks after they opened. It's a pretty decent place and they have good beer. Although it's not yet my favorite brewery but maybe it will grow on me. Seating can be a bit limited but we were there on a Sunday, mid-afternoon with a group, and we managed to get a table. No food as typical but we ordered in some pizzas. The atmosphere is chill, with a cozy couch, game set up, and darker mood lighting which was nice except when the thunderstorms rolled in, as it became very dark in the entire place, almost like nighttime! It almost made me sleepy between all of the pizza and beers. Talk about carb overload! Beers we sampled: Blood Moon Prophecy (red ale) Straight Up (porter) Solaire (Sour - Gose) Swimmer's Ear (witbeir) Out of Nowhere (IPA) this was my fave; I had two full pours of it. We didn't get to interact with the owners/bartenders as much but that's because we were at a table. The little bit of interaction I did have with them wasn't exactly the friendliest when I inquired about purchasing stickers/t-shirts. Oh well, it wasn't a deal breaker. I'll probably stop by again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
I thought I saw a sign for a brewery, it was a Sunday afternoon and I was passing by, I didn't expect to see a sign for a brewery there, but there it was. A small "A" frame sign on the side of the road that read "brewery". I was out running errands and on the way back I didn't see the make shift sign that I had just seen not an hour ago. Was I seeing things? Fast forward to the following weekend and there was that sign again and this time I was not going to pass up an opportunity to check out a new brewery. Black Horizon Brewing Company, it was a Sunday early afternoon walking in to another commercial area for a beer didn't surprise me to see that the dock door was open, to another warehouse I walked in, a small bar, bartenders, beer, tv's, games, bathroom, pretty standard stuff, no food besides goldfish crackers. An impressive choice of beers that included a porter, wheat, weisse, double IPA, citra pale ale, stout and a red ale. The IPA was my choice and the wheat sour was the selection of my friend. The wheat sour wasn't liked and my IPA was, well, not something I would order again. I was impressed however with their seemingly creative approach to new combinations of ingredients in their beers. Talking with one of the owners he stated that they would start brewing a beer with rose hips as soon as a bill allowing rose hips to be used passed the Illinois legislature. I would return to try that one. The menu that I was provided in person and the menu I was looking at on the website didn't match up. The list on the website looked like it was more whats to come vs whats already here. Black Horizon Brewing Company is new having only been open for less than 2 months, I'll be back to try a different beer and play some games.

Yelp
Great beer options, nice space, free wifi, and our bartender (brewer?) was super nice and fun to chat with. He happily gave us small sample sips to try, and the raspberry beer turned out to be great! They will soon be selling growlers, since we all know a howler is never enough! A lot of people seemed to come here for an after-work drink. They also have tv's available to watch sports, and you are welcome to bring your own food in. We would definitely come back!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Two words: Sugar Bomb. Two more: milkshake IPA One word. OMG Saturday night is lively. They had Karaoke, connect four and rock'em sock'em Robots among other games and people watching. Sunday afternoon....yep we went back for more, a little slower but both days great service from friendly bartenders.
google avatar

Kat W.

Yelp
Black Horizon has been on my radar for a few weeks now, and we finally got the chance to go on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Good thing they have signs... follow them, or you may not find it. Once inside, the space is great! They've got a great, long bar and plenty of other seating including tables and even a couch. There's also a foosball table, if you'd like to kick your husband's butt at a table game. That was fun. There are three TVs, and we were able to catch some Sunday afternoon football while we were there. As for the main event, the beers, we weren't overly impressed. We tried a five of the beers. "The Gang Makes a N.E. IPA" was pretty good. It's dry hopped, making it a bit sharper than other New England IPAs. "Peachy Keen" is a peach cream ale, and neither my husband and I were a fan. I'm not a cream ale person to begin with, but it tinny to me. We did enjoy "Half to Death" which is a cold brew coffee infused stout. Black Horizon is new to the neighborhood, and I look forward to returning to see how they grow!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
We stopped in over Thanksgiving weekend. Cozy space with a variety of seating options. Friendly, engaging service! I want to say they had 8-10 beers on tap. My husband enjoyed his Horizon APA. I had a sampler, which I did enjoy but not as much as some brews I've tried at other local breweries. Their raspberry sour & rye kolsch in particular remind of other offerings in the area, but not quite as complex in flavor. No question, we will be back to try other seasonal offerings throughout the year.
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
Jake, one of the owners, was very friendly and the beer was great. He said they have a constantly changing menu, which I like. Looking forward to trying more brews. Thanks!
google avatar

Andréa N.

Yelp
Finally got to check this place out! I've heard great things and it didn't disappoint! Great beer and good space. It's pretty minimalist compared to a lot of other breweries in terms of decor and menu but the beers they did have were awesome! I loved the Stealing Sunshine which was a blood orange sour. Would definitely go back!

Curt T.

Yelp
First time visiting the place. Ordered an IPA and it was pretty tasty. Talking to the guy tending bar and refer to him as "bartender." Well, the "bartender" coped a serious attitude with my moniker and says that he is "is a brewer. D**k." Wow. My mistake. I won't be back for another round. FYI go easy on your customers and they just might come back. So disappointed, Im a craft beer fan, just moved to the area and wanted to like this place. PS they are nice to their customers at Imperial Oak in Willow Springs.
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
Another solid Brewery in the south suburbs of Chicago this place is all of the way in an industrial Zone and only improves the industrial Zone with its mere presence. This is a cool place to hang around and drink and the staff was very attentive to all the patrons needs in addition to selling great tasting beer
google avatar

Lexi G.

Yelp
I had the blood orange sour beer and it was very fitting for a hot summer day. I could definitely taste notes of blood orange but it was not overpowering or overly sweet. I was here on a Thursday night which was trivia night. The inside was standard for a small brewery. The outside offered two round tables for seating with umbrellas. The beer menu hosted a selection of 8 beer- most hoppy or ipas which left the blood orange as my only option, however it did not disappoint.
google avatar

Katelynn K.

Yelp
Love this brewery! The three owners are incredible. There are always new brews on tap. Beers are phenomenal and flavorful. Definitely would recommend to come check it out if you're in the area. Support local!

Amanda A.

Yelp
Stopped in for my first time to grab a couple beers to go and I bought 2 4packs- Double Sugar Bomb and Cake Crusher. Their milkshake beers are awesome here! Both beers are fantastic! Thank you guys for the great beers!
google avatar

Javier D.

Yelp
Alex, Kevin, and Charles are very passionate brewery owners. Anytime I am in there having a pint it is a joy to witness how they greet all their customers. They really do go out of their way to make people feel welcomed. I've been to my share of breweries in the midwest and the establishments that care and get to know their customers are the successful ones in my personal opinion. Oh by the way the beer is good too which just makes this place even more attractive to visit. My personal favorites have been their NEIPA, DDH pale, black ale, Oktoberfest, and porter. They have nice sofas to chill at or areas to play darts or foosball. They have nice size televisions to watch a game or play ps3, nintendo 64, or old school arcade games. Food truck on certain days are also available. Come on in and tell them Javy sent you in for a pint.
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
Good beer. Cool atmosphere. TONS of games...amazing place to hang out. Owners are super cool and helpful. Definitely will be back! If they have straight up on tap I recommend that!
google avatar

William N.

Yelp
Pretty decent.. came here on what i believe is the first day their taproom opened up. They have 8 different items on their tap menu. Seating area is very limited so get here early. In my opinion they have ok craft as of now. But I certainly do believe they'll get better as they keep brewing and coning up with more options. Only dilemma is it is kind of hidden and mainly from my first experience it seems like commonly just people who love around the area and know the place goes there. But is very excited to come back and watch this place grow.
google avatar

Brien A.

Yelp
Always looking for a new brewery to try some different beers. We came across Black Horizon and had to give it a try. Walked in and was immediately impressed with the place. Great looking place! Plenty of room, cool video games, a few TV's for your sports, nice comfy couch to relax in, great bar and plenty of tables. Just a nice comfortable place. We ordered a flight and all four were delicious! The chocolate stout was really good! Their IPA with lactose was so delicious, I really hope they have it on next time I go. The other two were good too but I only had a sip because she finished those on me. We will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Patrick M.

Yelp
This place is pretty good. I had their Stealing Sundhine [sour ale] and Tales of Old [Vienna Ale]. They both were really good and made the hot summer day better.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Okay let's start with the space. A lot of brewery's brewery's don't have the room to accommodate a crowd that wants to sample the flight, Black Horizon does! Great space and let's get down to the Beer, that's why we're here right. I've had a lot brewery beer and the brewery has a distinct beer and it all taste the same. We tried ALL of the beers on tap, they are all different in flavor and very accurately described. Lastly...we love to save the best for last.....the staff, Charles is great, he's down to earth and not a beer snob but knowledgeable about what they have. We have come across brewery's where the staff seem to act like know it alls! Not this guy!! Happy 1year anniversary to Black Horizon Brewery!
google avatar

Rob J.

Yelp
Two words come to mind after tasting their beer; "balance" and "drinkability". The stouts aren't overly thick, heavy or boozy but light bodied and flavorful. The IPA's aren't overly hoppy or bitter but are crisp, smooth, and rather refreshing. Everything I have had here has been very good an makes for easy drinking. Definitely worth checking out.
google avatar

G C.

Yelp
Awesome beers! Horizon APA Vol. Citra was my favorite. Owners are very friendly and personable. We will definitely frequent this place! I'm so glad they are finally open! Cheers!!!
google avatar

Kendra O.

Yelp
I had the 2nd half of my company party here tonight! They had Liquid Kourage Entertainment doing karaoke, so I had a few singing contests for my team and it was a blast!!! The staff is very accommodating, welcoming and friendly! The brew is great and I can't wait to come back, (still need to get a tee)! I do wish the parking lot was a bit bigger bc it was super packed and we had to park in another lot and walk in snow, but that's a compliment!!

Mike W.

Yelp
The 2 stars is for the space as it is very inviting and great communal area for drinking beer and video gaming galore. The beer itself is in-between meh - average homebrew. The prices and pour sizes really need a revamp as you should not be paying the same price/size for different beers like you do here. Everything was 12oz and mostly $7 dollars and for a warehouse, with this rent, inn this neighborhood, I can't justify this price. Very pale ale focused right now as you would expect from a start up as it is easier to hide mistakes in the brewing process as they scale up.

Debbie L.

Yelp
We've heard about this brewery for awhile and finally got around to trying it. Great selection of beers on tap; lots of room inside for sitting and picnic tables outside as well. I had Quiet Contemplation which was a delicious cinnamon stout and my husband had the Stealing Sunshine blood orange sour which he loved. Definitely will be back! This is a hidden gem.
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
Another hit in the brewery business! I only had three of their beers but all were top notch. Charles was knowledgable and I enjoyed the conversation. They have a neighborhood feeling even though they are in an industrial area. They do small batches but are getting ready to do some big stuff so they can get out there and play with the big boys. Make the effort and stop by.

Kim B.

Yelp
Great concept and so nice to see a dedicated staff working so hard to do a great job! Awesome they're being very careful about Covid cleanliness and wearing masks. Don't forget to try the Black is Beautiful beer!
google avatar

Georgian K.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere. Good craft beers that rotates frequently so always something new to sample. Food trucks are there some nights. Service was good. Parking can be a challenge.

Ken P.

Yelp
Really fun brewery with board games, darts, foosball, n64, ps4 and other games! Staff is really nice and most importantly beer is great! Go for the beer and the rest is all bonus.

Yelp
Hardly ever do I ever enjoy the entire flight. Not the case at black horizon, everything was tasty and a fun place to hang out to enjoy those tasty suds. To the BHBC company let me know if you ship any to Jacksonville and I'll spread the word
