This was an interesting little museum dedicated to the history of a very famous arts college that operated in North Carolina in the mid 20th century. You would think that for such a famous institution, which saw so many famous artists, the foundation would be able to afford some nicer digs and a bigger space. The actual place is just a single storefront, ground floor and basement. The main exhibition area is on the ground floor, and they seem to focus on different members of the college's faculty at different times. Check to see who is being displayed, because when we went, they only had work up by a single painter and almost nothing by anyone else. The basement has a library and discussion/classroom area, gift shop, and a tiny bit more exhibition space.

Very engaging exhibitions at this small museum. Exhibitions focus on art produced by artists who taught or studied at the legendary, avant-garde Black Mountain College, which brought Bauhaus theories of art and craft to the US (Josef and Anni Albers and some of the other instuctors were major European artists who had fled Nazi Germany). I have visited twice and both times, the exhibitions featured wonderful art plus fascinating archival photos and other materials. Most recently, I saw the excellent Jacob Lawrence exhibition, which included new artworks responding to Lawrence's art made by four contemporary artists. I highly recommend visiting!

I enjoyed this museum. It's small, organized, and every piece is thought provoking. The main exhibition contains the rotating exhibition. The basement area contains a small gift shop, learning center, and permanent collection. I was surprised to see a Jacob Lawrence piece (see posted photo) in the collection. The Museum is free, I recommend 45 minutes to enjoy the collection.

Two locations across the street from each other. So glad to see the history and importance of Black Mountain College being preserved and enlivened through research and presentation.

More of an art gallery of folks with a connection to the BMC than a museum of the college itself, but nice spot all the same! Really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Nice little gift shop and no entrance fee but donations are accepted.

Very little there nothing interesting. But you can walk around the park for a bit if you already paid the meter.

To say I adore this museum is such an understatement. From start to finish, every visit I have made to the BMCM+AC over the past two years has been an absolute delight and I am so grateful to the entire team that keeps such amazing works on display for public enjoyment and education. BMC was such a special place and I am so glad its legacy lives on in this way! I'm always looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
Recent graduate from Rollins, so I loved visiting John Andrew Rice's college against Hamilton Holt! Great exhibit featuring Mexican artists and the connection BMC had with its artistic alumni! Would recommend to any lover of progressive education. Gift shop has works and biographies of alumni and their contributions to BMC and in the artist realm.

Yelp
On my recent visit to the Black Mountain College Museum & Art Center, when I entered, I was greeted and told about the history of the college. It focused on the arts and how they want to keep the legacy alive with work from alumni. Face masks are required as well as social distancing. The library downstairs is open but you cannot take the books of the shelf yourself but a staff member will gladly assist you. I like the open space of the museum and the light. I love the architecture of the older buildings and this is a perfect venue for the art. A poetry exhibit was downstairs. The museum is even offering virtual visits right now. So you can experience the museum from home.

Yelp
Black Mountain College Museum & Art Center is an amazing gallery space in Asheville that celebrates the history and legacy of Black Mountain College, an experiment in community and arts-centered education near Black Mountain, NC in the 1930's and 50's. The gallery has recently moved to a new location on College street. The staff here is always helpful and friendly and they are very knowledgable. The gallery is clean and beautiful. This is a great gallery to go to for history and culture. The Art Center always has different exhibits and offers group tours, does film viewings and hosts performances. Great place!

Yelp
Waited outside front door for 11 am opening. Staff was inside. After 15 min we knocked on the door and a woman stuck her head out to say they were setting up. Then she closed the door. No explanation as to when they would open. Updating this review after receiving an explanation from the museum. Apparently there was a special exhibition that night and the museum had special hours that were not posted. As a result we have not seen the museum but given the subject matter we would hope to return. Black Mountain College was not only unique but also very important and it's story needs to be heard.

Yelp
Exhibitions change every few months, and there are often free lectures at noon with curators or other experts. They do film screenings & performances after hours too. Definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
Super welcoming. Loved the collection & learning more about the College. (It's a shame it was shut down after only 27 years). Bathrooms & museum was super clean & well kept. It operates on donations, & they do not charge entrance fee. Would not be of much interest for young kids, but good education for teens & up!
