How the Espresso Martini Became Melbourne’s Essential Cocktail | Eater

"An influential cocktail bar that opened in 2002 and blended cafe and cocktail traditions—boasting a full-sized, three-head commercial espresso machine and crowd-pleasing sweet signatures like a Toblerone cocktail—to draw early-evening trade and hospitality workers, play a formative role in the local cocktail scene, and naturally foster the rise of the espresso martini." - Fred Siggins

Google

Homey feel, excellent coffee(Stumptown). Loved the smoked salmon bagel. Easy self-ordering. Gets crowded and feels tight for sitting in

Google
What an amazing cozy little place for coffee, pastries or a quick lunch. The staff is super friendly. They have an impressive range of drinks and pastries. My husband and I got coffee and nutella croissant. The croissant was fresh and soft and the coffee was delicious. It was really cold outside so it was a perfect morning for hot coffee. I definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area.

Omer Rana

Google
You walk in and see a La Marzocco machine, local roasters coffee, some amazing looking croissants and think wow, this should be a great experience. Unfortunately using a really dark roast that is over extracted is a terrible idea. The Nutella croissant however was great! They have a ton of drink options and food as well. Hopefully they can change their coffee profile soon.

Google
The cold brew here is really good. I need to come back to try their other drinks. I didn’t get any food but the pastries they had displayed looked good. Very friendly people working there!

Google
5 stars for this quaint cafe. Their service was courteous and with a smile. Their iced coffee was tasty and I highly recommend their strawberry and guava splash tea refresher was one of the best I have ever had.

Yelp
Very cool local coffee shop, with a cute neighborhood surrounding area for a morning walk on the weekends. They have a very friendly staff, a great vibe, and the iced caramel latte that my girlfriend got was "Starbucks quality coffee with an added touch of sweetness that's not too overpowering."

Yelp
Stayed overnight in Princeton and stopped in for breakfast. We're local but having a couples overnight. First off, the staff are amazing. Very friendly and working very hard to get everyone's orders up fast. The coffee, they use Stumptown Coffee Roasters, which is a favorite of mine. Just a standard black coffee was incredible. Exactly how coffee is supposed to taste!!! My wife got a cappuccino which was delicious. For food, I got the meat lovers sandwich and my wife got the vegan delight. Both were just amazing. The inside of the business is super cozy with lots of seating for indoor eating and some outdoor seating too. Great spot! We'll be back again soon!!

Yelp
I visited Black Pearl for the first time between some meetings and am so happy I took a chance on a new cafe instead of my tried and true in the area. It's cozy, cute, welcoming, and has a really unique menu! Firstly, the space: I walked in, looked around and immediately felt like I had just popped into someone's house. I mean, it IS basically a house turned cafe and I love that it still has the homey feel. There are big and small tables and even a couch. I loved that people were there having lunch alone, coffee with friends and even hunkered down with a laptop like myself. The team: So sweet! Let me know some recommendations, let me take my time looking at the menu and brought everything out to me when it was ready. I got an oat milk latte (my usual) and the Pearl sandwich. Both delicious. The coffee was hot and delicious and gave me the caffeine kick I needed. And The Pearl was more like avocado toast with smoked salmon, capers and some kind of sauce drizzled on top. Delicious! And a very generous portion. It made me think I need to absolutely get a jar of capers to add to my usual snacks at home. The rest of the menu looked equally as delicious and intriguing. If you are in the area looking for a casual lunch (think paper plates) you'll like it here. Enjoy!

Yelp
I cant recommend Black Pearl enough, the coffee is delicious and strong, the pastries delicious and fresh and the staff is always so kind. I love stopping in for lunch for the salmon avocado toast that is always made with fresh ingredients. Highly recommend, the chain coffee shops just don't compare.

Yelp
I stopped here on a rainy day while I was shopping. The outside of the locations looks like a house and there is plenty of parking and a ramp to go inside. The staff were very friendly when I walked in, there are a few tables inside to sit and enjoy a drink with a snack or even have a quick meeting. I ordered a few premade pastries that included a jalapeño and cheese empanada and a spinach and feta Lattice. I grabbed what looked like a lemon tart to go and a tea for the ride home. The girl at the register was in training and charged me for the incorrect dessert but the lady in the back noticed and quickly explained the error and return my change. The empanada was nice a flaky and the jalapeño had a slight kick not too spicy so I really enjoyed it, they served a salsa on the side which I honestly felt it didn't need. My dad enjoyed the spinach and feta lattice also, the guava tea wasn't sweet but still refreshing. The lemon tart wasn't sweet at all and tasted almost more like gelatin than curd. I would return to try other baked goods with a coffee and skip the dessert.

Yelp
Black Pearl Coffee is a cute family owned coffee shop, right on Plainsboro Road. There is outdoor seating on the front deck as well as various indoor seating from benches, to tables to hightop. The service was friendly with lots of options for beverages and pastries. We ordered some scones, coffee, and Chai. I was looking forward to the Chai, since they brew it fresh with spices, but I was disappointed since there was a very overpowering spice - too much cinnamon, I think. I'm also very critical of Chai, since I make my own every morning. I'd go again, but probably stick to a coffee based beverage.

Yelp
Super cute spot. Friendly staff. Nice and clean. Amazing coffee and food. Free wifi. Chill vibes.

Yelp
Good iced oat chai, flavorful and what I wanted. Reasonably priced too. Everyone is friendly and the interior is super cozy. It's like grabbing g coffee or tea at a friend or family members home. Outdoor seating is nice as well. Great place to spend a few hours working, reading, or catching up with friends.

Yelp
Reasonably priced coffee, delicious corn muffins, and lovely service! A very charming coffee shop I hope others stumble upon. I look forward to being back.

Yelp
A warm welcome to Plainsboro! Owned by a mother & daughter duo who are Plainsboro locals and Maria (the daughter) is a HSN alum. This place is many things... aside from a small business, it is woman-owned and Latin-owned. I've missed having a local haunt with The Grind long gone and was so happy to see Black Pearl coming. So many reasons to support them already, and I haven't even gotten to the food and drinks yet! Located on Plainsboro Road, it's got its own charm being away from the strip mall. There's outdoor and indoor seating, depending on your mood and size of your party. On offer are breakfast, lunch and dessert options, as well as a variety of hot and cold drinks, even fresh-squeezed juices. Coffees are rotated weekly by region; could be Costa Rican, Colombian or Ethiopian, depending on the week. My group sampled a latte, Americano, Thai iced tea, and fresh-squeezed OJ on our quick visit, and we were all happy. The sweet customer service was a bonus. Next time I'll sit down and have a bite to eat. Already have my eye on Nana's Toast, or the Meat Lovers which features pork roll-- repping NJ!

Yelp
I have used black pearl for catering a variety of breakfast events in a corporate setting & their almond croissants are simply decadent. With plenty of yummy vegetarian options - my group is always extremely satisfied! Plus the espresso bevs are excellent. Great local spot.

L B.

Yelp
I visited the place for the first time this morning. I ordered cappuccino with coconut milk; little raisin roll and bottle of water. Let me tell you the coconut milk was either expired or too old in the fridge. Gross. I couldn't drink my coffee I called the place left a voice mail and texted them. Didn't hear from them then I decided to review the place. Never again !

Vicky T.

Yelp
Service was friendly, helpful & fast. Their coffee was excellent (lots of choices for hot & cold specialty drinks) - & we had their breakfast egg bites - really innovative & very yummy! Highly recommended this place if you're in the area!! Good amount of indoor seating & some seating on porch as well - cute atmosphere.

Yelp
Employees were very friendly. I ordered an almond milk latte and a pan de bono, which I haven't had in years. The latte was steamed a bit too hot, but it didn't scad the milk somehow. I really wish they had offered to warm it up because it was just a bit dense and cold from the refrigerator.

Alyson P.

Yelp
Lovely and eclectic with good food and drinks. A gem. Highly recommended. Stop by when you can.

Yelp
Owned by a mother daughter this cafe is a new take on breakfast that Plainsboro needed. I got the pesto egg bites and a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was brought out with the food and was surprisingly lacking sweetness in the best way so I totally recommend that. The egg bites I got were the pesto now as shown in the photo they were a bit inconsistent but I think the cheese compressed the egg so there could be worse problems they give the option to get toast with it which I declined. The bites were soft and flavorful. Overall 4/5 and I look forward to coming back to try more and wish this place the best of luck, and recommend it to everyone!

Yelp
Food is always delicious. Service is warm and friendly. The ladies always have a positive attitude and make the ambience feel very welcoming and cozy.

Yelp
The sleepy SimCity burb of Plainsboro, NJ could use a jolt of caffeine so, a very warm welcome to coffee haus/café, Black Pearl. It's locally owned and independent so I am immediately excited and hopeful. The vibe is warm, inviting and chill without the barista culture overhang that haunts that other place from Seattle - and if I can judge by a solitary cappuccino, the execution is strong. I didn't order any food (which looked fantastic btw) but I'll leave that for next visit which will be very soon. A very favorable first impression and a pay it forward five stars.

Yelp
We were excited to see a new coffee shop in the neighborhood so headed there on a Saturday morning. Menu items are perfect for a coffee and breakfast to-go or to stay (there are a couple tables inside), and if you're feeling hungry you might grab a croissant (raspberry almond is YUM), or a specialty drink. The owners/staff are so friendly and gracious too. Vegans: they have a vegan sandwich available (a good light brunch option) and non-dairy milk substitutes!
google avatar

Nanette H.

Yelp
The baked goods and sandwiches were fresh and delicious! Excellent coffee, too. Friendly people and nice, comfortable ambiance.
google avatar

Manish T.

Yelp
Quiet and cozy place. Located away from main roads. Limited seating but Nice outdoor seating.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
The coffee is very good, the food is good and there are meat, vegetarian, and vegan option. The warmth, dedication, and passion for excellence of its hometown proprietor is superlative. I highly recommend.

Yelp
Great coffee, pastries, and service. Been coming here for a while and I hope to keep coming here for the foreseeable future. Nice and cozy inside and kept clean. Very homey and comfortable.

Yelp
Wonderful breakfast lox and bagels! Coffee drinks were amazing, especially the iced hazelnut latte. Friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. So happy we stopped here on our road trip!
google avatar

Christopher H.

Yelp
I have only ordered their coffee through delivery app. I was SO IMPRESSED! I live in town and have driven by 100 times but never stopped in. I would consider me and my wife to be coffee snobs, and we LOVED both of our drinks. Cannot wait to go back and try more of their menu!
google avatar

Yelp
A nice mom and pop coffee shop located in Plainsboro. Friendly staff and nice table set up for hanging with friends or working on your laptop. Latte was delicious but my favorite is the vegan sandwich. The avocado spread was freshly made with shredded carrots and homemade vinaigrette dressing. It's a perfect refreshing morning boost. I like the sunrise egg bites as well and will try them on sandwich next time.

Yelp
Really great coffee and pastries. I'm from Argentina and loved seeing some empanadas. This is a unique place you should check out.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Very unassuming from the outside, this spot is so cute once you go inside! A nice place to sit and enjoy breakfast while you read the news, or sit and do a little work on their Wi-Fi when you need to get out of the house. It was hard to choose from the selection of bagels, toasts, bites, and pastries. I tried the Pearl breakfast toast which was generously piled with smoked salmon and very tasty. I'd have it again in a heartbeat, but would also be tempted to try everything else on the menu if I could come back!
google avatar

Yelp
I have visited Black Pearl several times in the last few months, highly recommend trying it. The ambience is nice inside, and the coffee and food are very good. Vegan sandwich in particular is a favorite, and the pastries I have tried (croissant and apple turnover) were consistently delicious. It is great to be able to sit down with friends in such a nice atmosphere, so close to home (I live in the neighborhood). Otherwise would have to make an effort to drive across Rte 1 into downtown Princeton. I wish Black Pearl lots of success.
google avatar

Monica D.

Yelp
Absolutely love this new coffee shop! They have lots of delicious food and drink options. My favorite is their chai latte and vegan delight! The people that work there are very friendly and the inside is very cozy.

Yelp
Really enjoyed going to Black Pearl and will probably be going every week. So far I have tried The Pearl (2 pieces of toast topped with avocado, smoked salmon, and a really delicious sauce), CBLT (BLT with Canadian bacon), pumpkin soup, drip coffee, and cappuccino with oat milk. All were great and I can't wait to try more of the menu! There's so much here for breakfast and lunch, and the owner is very passionate about everything she makes. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and had nice seating if you want to stay, and there are also many grab-and-go items if you're in a hurry. There is also plenty of parking behind the building.

Aggie S.

Yelp
Very quaint place with friendly service. Only one kind of coffee flavor a day but it is amazing! I also ordered the chai tea which was very good as well. Looking forward to trying their lunch!
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my drink, I wish I didn't just have lunch, because I would have gotten a sandwich. The staff is very nice and it's very clean inside. Def going again!
google avatar

Netka S.

Yelp
I was staying in town for a few days and I an so lucky ai found this gem just minutes away from my hotel. I came here every day! Not only because the coffee is delicious, the sandwiches are super yummy but the owners are so friendly and just so sweet and kind. Come support this small local business now!!!
google avatar

Frances M.

Yelp
Coffee was great. Pastries were great. Loved the chocolate croissant. Was not a fan of the cheese danish as it wasn't as flaky/it was a little dry. Ambiance was nice and it wasn't too busy.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
This little coffee shop is off the beaten path in Plainsboro. Which is why it's surprises and delights. It's across the street from the firehouse in a adorable little building. It's a great place to meet a friend and enjoy a cuppa coffee and conversation. The staff are the perfect balance of being friendly and welcoming without being saccharine. That genuine feeling is a welcomed respite from coffee chain workers who are either over the top or can care less for your business. The coffee options and baked good selection were very good. I enjoyed a nice dark roast and the relaxed vibes.
google avatar

Jim F.

Yelp
Limited menu. No pasties or bagels. Need more food items and lattes. Not enough tables. No air it was uncomfortable

Irin C.

Yelp
Love love love this coffee shop! Good vibes and ambience. Amazing coffee and food. So happy it's near my house! TRULLY a gem.
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, Adorable space and great service . Oh, and the Tres Leches is fantastic!

Manan S.

Yelp
Was confused if I had the right location when Google led me to the building, but upon stepping inside, any reservations I had were gone. The atmosphere was great and it wasn't too packed on Sunday evening. I just came to find somewhere I could get some work done and got exactly that. I got a small Chai and a Vegan sandwich while I did some light research on my laptop. The cashier was very nice and I really dug the vibe. There isn't *a lot* of room on the inside but it kind of helps give it a homely, cozy vibe. Will definitely recommend and return.

Matt V.

Yelp
Food is good, only issue is every time I go at least 1 item is made incorrect (been 5 times). Without this, definitely could be 4/5.
google avatar

Kristine C.

Yelp
The coffee, pastries, and staff are wonderful. And don't miss the egg bites. They are to die for!

Emma M.

Yelp
Very cute coffee shop in the Plainsboro area. Great selection of food and high quality espresso drinks. The sandwiches are decent. We tried the Pimento egg bites and they were really flavorful. Also, let's talk the ambiance--decent amount of seating, not too loud, and well-decorated. It's a great place to study or get some work done.

Shefali S.

Yelp
Such good food and such good service. Finally, a cute cafe in town with food that caters to all sensitivities and great coffee. Yes, lack of air conditioning is a bit of a challenge. I say, let's support this local joint as much as possible so they can continue to grow and add in the creature comforts.

Mickey O.

Yelp
Thouroughly enjoyed the excellent fresh coffee and great breakfast/lunch. The Vegan sandwich was a lovely avocado toast on whole grain with shredded carrots and cucumber- scrumptious and filling!

Pratik N.

Yelp
Until these folks came along, it was pretty much impossible to get a quality brew in Plainsboro. This is the quaint, family-run coffee joint this town needs. Maria and her family put a lot of heart into this place and it shows: it's like going to an old friends home for a bite to eat. Also: their empanadas are to die for.

Albert M.

Yelp
A Black Pearl never shone so bright! A cozy, neat, welcoming space, where one can get superior coffees and sweet and savory items. The coffees here bear no relation to the bitter/burned stuff that is served elsewhere, thanks to the Central American owners. Ample space to sit and savor both inside and out. A great hangout place!

Anita G.

Yelp
Awesome place ,delicious food ,friendly and clean to have a coffee place in our neighbourhood
