We tried Black Seed when it was on Court Street and weren't blown away. Thought we would try again as this location is much closer to home.
First - great location, friendly staff, and cute spot in general. We grabbed a bag of the Stumptown Black Seed blend coffee beans - very tasty.
As far as the bagels, they are solidly OK. I listened to an interview with a lady who makes them, their background, reasoning, ratio between NYC and Montreal style. That made me want to try again. We grabbed 4 everything bagels and brought them home to (lightly) toast and prepare with all the fixins (lox, tomato, red onion, caper, cream cheese.)
As I understand it, these bagels are intentionally created as a sandwich. As such, they are OK! I think that if I could get a fresh bagel, it could have some real potential. However, they taste like day-old bagels at any local shop where you are actually eating fresh bagels. They are not to be compared to a fresh, NYC bagel - warm and not needing a toast.
I asked when they were MADE when I picked them up. The lady said she didn't know exactly - "overnight."
My thoughts on it being next to a hotel are mixed. On one hand, someone from out of town might enjoy theM. I'm sure they are better than the average midwest or grocery bagel. But if that's the only bagel a visitor tries in the city, then that person is missing out. (And would find my pretentious view of the best bagel in the world to be even more annoying.) - note, I am originally from the Midwest-
Anyway, in conclusion, 3 stars is not bad - A-ok! If you want a bagel sandwich, you won't be angry. But if you are looking for a fresh bagel, probably not the best spot.
