Portland’s Black Seed Burger Cult Will Open on North Mississippi - Eater Portland

"Black Seed Burger Cult, set to open early this fall, will be a family-friendly diner with ‘60s vibes. Black Seed is the passion project of four Sizzle Pie alumni and longtime friends: Mikey McKennedy, Mikey Williams, Donovyn Collins, and John Black. The four of them jumped on the former Verde Cocina location at 3746 N Mississippi Avenue and are now working on a simple menu of burgers, sandwiches, and loaded fries. Each dish has several different versions, depending on the dietary restrictions — Black Seed wants to have vegan and gluten-free versions of each item on the menu, making most of the sandwiches’ sauces naturally vegan and gluten-free. “We want to make sure that we can offer every kind of option,” Williams says. “People go to other places for the vegan burgers, but here, there’s no cross contamination — everything is fried separately, never cooked in the same grease. That’s a huge part of what we want to do.” Most things will be made in-house — including the vegan burgers — but Portland bakery Fleur De Lis will handle the buns. The restaurant itself is far from the Motorhead-blasting pizza chain where they all got their start — Black Seed is meant to appeal to a wide range of ages, with more mid-century nostalgia than loud music. Kids can order non-alcoholic slushies with flavors like horchata and hibiscus, and the drinkers can stick to beer, wine, and cider. Black Seed will be open in late September or early October." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Excellent burgers and fries. Very limited selection of fountain drinks and only American cheese on the burgers. Old burger joint style inside with several outdoor tables. Clean and well-maintained. The four of us all enjoyed our burgers immensely. They were perfectly cooked, well seasoned, and well sauced. And the buns are amazing.

Expected better considering how much they put into the build out of the restaurant itself. Positives were a good bun and fries. But the patty was dry (expected juicer) and not really tasty. Glad we tried it but unfortunately there are better burgers to get after in Portland. ✌🏽

Really hearty and tasty burgers! The fries were herby, well seasoned and delicious. They have root beer on tap too which paired so nicely! Clean space and friendly staff, I look forward to visiting again!

This place was super tasty and the staff was really nice. Everything on the menu can be made completely vegan which is great for a change. The “bacon” kind of freaked me out because it looked fake, but tasted pretty real. All of the burgers seemed to come with fries so you won’t need to spend extra money on a side. They also had an outdoor space to eat in for covid.

My boyfriend and I traveled down from Seattle to try some great vegan spots in Portland and this was a highlight. One of the best burgers we’ve ever had. The chicken karaage was perfectly fried and seasoned on a soft gluten free bun. The pickled onions and slaw were super flavorful and my bf was able to customize his burger the way he wanted it. The guy working was super nice and suggested ideas for us to make it better. He got the roasted jalapeños on his and they were delicious… so were the fries. I got the salad and it was so fresh!! We appreciated the hospitality and I like how they had unsweetened tea ☕️ Can’t wait to come back :)

Great burgers, the black seed buns are so delicious and the beef is seasoned and grilled to perfection. Service was a bit slow giving that we were the only ones inside, but the wait wasn’t unbearable. There’s a convenient parking right beside this establishment which makes it easier to navigate. 100% recommended for a quick byte.
