This is a great American-style bar restaurant with an outside patio area. The atmosphere creates a sporty and casual feeling. My family is a big fan of burgers and sandwiches. Everyone is satisfied with the food here. Except for the size of my six pieces of shrimp. It looked smaller than in the actual picture. My picture looks better than real life. We always come here for dinner and sit in the patio area. However, our latest lunch experience was a little bit disappointing. We came around 11:30 am. It was not a full house until noon. Then all the tables were taken. There were two chefs in the kitchen and one server taking care of the drinks, orders, the cashier, and serving food. So it was super slow so the four guys who were seated in front of the bar left. We could tell that the three ladies who came 10 minutes after us and sat at the bar also had to wait a very long time to get their food. We came at 11:37am. At 11:53 am we got our drinks. At 12:13 pm we got our meal. After I finished my six pieces of sautéed shrimp, I waited for half an hour to get my ice cream at 12:45pm. And it was melted when it finally came. Therefore, I don’t recommend coming to this restaurant at lunchtime if they are understaffed.

We sat in the patio and it was so beautiful! My first time trying the mac and cheese, super yummy. It had carnitas on top. The burger was super big and I got a side of tortilla soup on the side. Our waiter was very kind too. Food came out fast and hot. The heaters could be cranked up a bit more but it’s ok.

What really stood out to us (besides amazing delicious food) was how we were treated. Our server was very kind, helpful and friendly. And we can’t wait to go back…. We ate everything we were served and wish we could have taken leftovers since we were from out of town 😆

Absolutely the BEST MAC AND CHEESE my Wife and I have ever had. It was the Queen Brie Pub Mac And Cheese w/ Roasted Garlic, Brie, thyme, Applewood Smoked Bacon and cooked perfectly!! Bartenders Jodie also made me a great Mezcal and lemonade .. it will sell you on why Mezcal is Soo Good!

Nice place to hangout and get drunk. They have a nice small patio at back of the bar. It’s a proper bar so you can get all kind of liquor. We got Macallan and beers. We dis not try any food. Even though we forgot the CC in the night we were able to get it in the morning easily from the bar.

My Sis has been here & loved it & I second that. I had the Guiness Burger🍔, fabulous🤎. She created her own Mac n Cheese 🧀 with Nachos & Hubby got the Blackened Shirmp Salad 🥗🍤 & would order it again! Twas Fabulous😋

I love this little place! I love sitting at the bar and visiting with all the people. But there's also an outdoor patio in the back, which is very pretty. Best Mac and cheese ever and you can load it with a variety of toppings. All of the food is great!

If you're looking for San Luis Obispo charm from our neighborhood bar, look no further than The Black Sheep. The food comes in generous portions and everything tastes wonderful. They have an outside patio if you prefer to enjoy things outside. During the school year, TBS turns into a younger crowd that hosts all the college kids. Overall Grade: A

My 2 friends and I started our afternoon together at this restaurant for our afternoon. The food was absolutely incredible. This pub is known for their Guiness soaked burger patties, which my two friends ordered. I got the half portion of Mac and Cheese, adding buffalo strips and blue cheese. This was the best thing I ate all weekend. The service was fine, and a little slow at times. The food is worth enduring the service. I can't wait to come back here again!

The buffalo chicken wrap was really tasty. Right amount of spice and the chicken was still crispy inside. The side of fries were your average fries. Service was a little slow but that could be that it was just so busy in there. So that's to be expected.

Food: 4. Always wanted to try this place. Came by on a Friday around 2 pm. Place is pretty small and was pretty busy with some customers at the bar and most of the tables filled. It notes they have a patio but I forgot to check it out. I sat at the bar. A friend joined me and we tried their fish tacos with fries. Food came out timely and at the right temperature. Tacos were big and had a nice flavor. Service was very good. Ambiance is comfortable. I like this bar / restaurant. They note a happy hour Monday to Friday from 3 - 6 pm but I didn't partake of the offerings. Service: 4.25 Ambiance: 4 Value: 3.75

Used to come here when I was in college and truly nothing has changed. I moved away for quite some time, but just moved back in the last few years and black sheep is just as good as I remember it. The location is superb as it's downtown SLO near all of the other shops and bars. It is also a very popular place to come during Cal Poly graduation, as they open early for graduation like many of the other bars in downtown do. Inside they have a good amount of seating, as well as a nice long full service bar. They also have a really cool little outdoor patio as you walk to the back of the building, with plenty of room for a larger party. One of their specialties is mac & cheese, which you can order with lots of exciting different toppings. They also of course have an original mac & cheese, which is super yummy (and my personal favorite) and I just add bacon to it. They also have a wide variety of delicious burgers, salads, and wraps. They have a wide variety of appetizers which are all super delicious, including some of my favorites, like the brussels sprouts, nachos, wings and sweet potato fries. The service here is always great and most recently I came with a friend for lunch and our server was so nice and welcoming (I wish I'd gotten her name). Overall this place is a great spot to grab some drinks and pub style food with friends!

Spontaneous Tuesday evening birthday get together ended up with 10+ straggling in! Happened to be Trivia Night out back, so very busy, but we got seats along the lovely brick wall facing the bar. Dana, who seemed to be the only wait staff, was so helpful, engaging and got us all seated and served. She and the bartender, (and I assume kitchen staff) never seemed harried and got us all great food, perfectly poured Guinness as well as other great libations in quick order. Our new favorite restaurant/bar in SLO.

I've heard really good things about the Mac n cheese and had to try. It was amazing. We got the cowboy one that has the buffalo chicken.. it's a must get. The chicken adds a little spice to a plain mac so definitely recommend it. Super good. The nachos speak for themselves in that photo. Delicious. The sweet potato fries were good but not ground breaking by any means, I wish the chipotle aioli sauce we got was thicker and less like a sauce and more of a dip. My friend got a signature cocktail and it was great! The staff was super friendly and came over and took our orders even though they were busy. Good classic upscale bar vibes. Definitely would come here again!

We recommend building your own burgers and Beefy Mac items. They are so good you have to try them. They recently removed the ribs from the menu. We went on a Monday night and it wasn't busy. Beefy Mac is our favorite. It has bit sized pieces of tri-tip and lots of cheese. The beef was cooked just right without being too chewy or dry. And the portion is big enough to share with everyone.

Wish I could give more stars. The coffee is top notch, and prepared by the kindest most interesting baristas. Easy parking, great location. Locals spot, but once anyone finds this small business, there's no reason to go anywhere else.

Yes it is almost always crowded, but it is a bar, so order a drink if it stresses you out. The staff are always very nice and if you can hear the music it is good. The reason this is five stars despite imperfections is because every ounce of food that I have eaten from this place is divine. The classic burger is the best burger on God's green earth. I will say the mushroom with the side salad was weird. But the fries, mac n' cheese, and the BURGER oh my goodness is it incredible. I will continuously come back for those plump buns and juicy meats.

Black Sheep is a go to for us for fantastic bar and grill food. They also make a wonderful margarita. They are participating in Restaurant month, so they are offering a few different Mac N Cheese dishes. I tried the Garlic Parmesan Jalapeño Mac N Cheese. Soooo good. Hubby had the Tri Tip, which is also quite wonderful. The bar is lively and fun, with friendly staff. Overall we just love to pop in there in the weekends.

Pro tip #1: Their Mac n cheese pairs great with their beers! Black Sheep has a nice, small wooden pub look with mood lighting. They also have a back area which has fresh air and is a better area for friends who want to catch up after eating inside. Personally, all the cocktails taste great but my favorite would be the Black Cadillac and that's coming from someone who doesn't prefer Tequila. My friends and I each got a different flavor and played a game where each person tries all five drinks with their eyes closed and tries to name which it is based on taste. Highly recommend as it gets everyone in a fun mood!

If you ever had a fantasy of going to a friendly bar where, "Everybody knows your name" ---this is it!!! The cozy ambience is evident from the moment that you step in the door, where the British pub style bar and the brick interior provide a warm interior. Then there were the friendly greetings from every body behind the bar and from the servers, who led us to the charming back patio. We chose a table in the shade for the four of us, and took in the brick walls draped with ivy and twinkle lights while we perused the menu. I loved the scope of the menu because it offers pretty much everything you could think of to eat while sipping beer or wine. Creative pub food, with burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads, build your own Mac n Cheese, and a great assortment of bar appetizers, like fish and chips and baby back ribs, as well as Mexican favorites, offer enough choices that I can see why people return here often. Our beer and wine arrived promptly and three of us ordered the same shrimp and avocado salad. We were all being healthy, and universally liked the beautifully seasoned grilled shrimp paired with the avocado resting on a bed of lettuce. We reminisced and caught up with each other, relaxing in the shady patio. The place reminded me of one of my favorite New York haunts, the Grammercy Tavern because it had that feeling of locals enjoying life in a place that was an extension of home! We lingered on after lunch, chatting away, in our new home away from home!!

Normally like the drinks here, they are generous. Good is bar food but decent. Never had a complaint. This review is about service. Went in midafternoon for a drink, sat at last two spots at bar. Everyone else was already serviced. Waited. My partner walked to the other end of the bar and had a brief exchange with the waitress, he was just checking out the rum options (she knew we were there and about ready for drinks). Waited some more. Another couple walked in and sat at tables behind us. Still waiting. Then we turn around and waitress is taking their order. Then she's walking over and spending about four minutes typing it into the computer. We walked out. How rude.

I don't usually leave reviews but this place was on point. I recommend trying their corned beef Rueben sandwich and throw the jalapeño garlic fries in it with the ranch drizzled on top!

We went here EVERY OTHER NIGHT when we stayed in town for five nights. Nice / relaxed. Get here early for a good indoor seat. Food was adjusted as asked if needed - nice. Walking the area added to the nice evening. (Even went on the night of the street fair...)

Super chill place for a late night casual meal. Very friendly staff all around. Is located in downtown SLO so it was a quick walk from our accommodations at hotel SLO. Mac and Cheese was to die for!

The size and the taste do not disappoint. Atmosphere is rather noisy but acceptable for a bar. Seating can feel a bit tight. There are a couole of tables by the window. Service is quick. Waitress is kind and helpful.

I stop over for lunch on a sunny day. The back patio was still warm under the sun. I ordered a pesto chicken sandwich. It has a great pesto flavor and chicken was cooked to perfection, moist and juice on a nice soft bread. I opted for the salad to not go carb crazy and made for a nice balanced meal. I also tried the Mac Blues. Mac and cheese with blue cheese and sun dried tomatoes. I was quite impress with this combo, the flavors were perfect. Paired with sweet potato fries this was easily eaten up. The menu includes great bar food, other salads, south of the border options and tacos. Food for everyone!

Walked by here on Thursday night, peeked inside and decided to check it out. The place was crowded but fortunately there was one table open for two of us. We sat down and were immediately greeted by our server. She described a couple of items and we ordered. I had the grilled chicken salad with goat cheese, cranberries, pecans and more. My daughter ordered the grilled shrimp salad which had a Mexican twist. The only odd thing on it, but was good was the marinated mushrooms. The food is good, the service is great. I would definitely go back and try it again.

The Western burger was absolutely life changing. Incredible. Thank you to our waiter who gave us incredible service. Didn't catch his name but we were so grateful for him!

I stumbled upon this place while in town for a graduation which also happen to be Father's Day weekend. We were lucky enough to grab a table before the crowds hit. It's a small but very inviting place. Great fully stocked bar, pretty good menu. We were looking for bar food and got exactly that. Great service despite being super busy. Our food came out quickly and was delicious. We will definitely be back.

Haven't tried the food , but the fries are good and the spiked lemonade I got was very good mixed well , very busy on the weekends but all staff is very friendly and attentive good service.

Came here with my goddaughters and friend yesterday for lunch. Customer service was ok, the food did take a long time to come out but that's because we noticed they were severely understaff. Only two waiting tables and two in the kitchen, and it was packed. Thankfully the food came out before we had to leave for the movie we wanted to see downtown. So we got to eat some of the food, but not all and couldn't really enjoy it to its fullest. The food was really really good though. The original Mac and cheese was great. Their French fries and onion rings were really good. Their burgers were juicy and full of flavor. All the food we had was amazing. Just sucks we could not enjoy it enough, but waiting almost an hour was tough.

arrived 4pm on a Thursday. not crowded at all. bar and dining area long and narrow. plain nachos ok but bland. wife had fish tacos she say were just ok. i had chili Verde bowl, with chips. bowl was good, chips were store bought and nothing special. skinny margarita $10 and draft beer $4 HH price were good. service was fine nothing special basic bar service. over all good spot during HH drinks and bar food.

Wonderful meal!!! Just finished up at the Black sheep bar and grill and would rate it 10 stars if I could. We started off with the chips and guacamole which was delicious, I am from New Mexico so I know my way around guacamole!! I ordered the original mac and western burger. The western burger was topped with bacon, onions rings, and a wonderful BBQ sauce. It was absolutely perfect. The mac n cheese was also delicious, packed with such a creamy flavor. The service was absolutely fantastic and everyone was so happy and sweet.

This place is more like a tavern with a few tables. There is seating out front and a patio in the back however there were a lot of black bugs flying around so we decided to eat inside. You can seat yourself. The waitress took our drink and food order but let us know that the kitchen was backed up so it would be about a 25 to 30 min wait. I really appreciated the heads up. We ordered the Ultimate ABC Burger which was loaded with avacado, bacon and cheese. It was flavorful and delicious plus a side of House Chicken Tortilla Soup. The Original Pub Mac N Cheese was my favorite. Omg this was amazing! The broiled cheese on top and under was really cheesy and delicious. They have several different choices of this dish with different ingredients to add. Service was a bit slow but I understood because they had two servers bartending and waiting tables on a busy Saturday afternoon. I recommend this place and I will be back.

I was really excited to try this place, as it has been nominated as one of slos best mac and cheese spots. i decided to do the classic one and it was underwhelming. i love a good mac and cheese, but this one was kinda just average to me. the cheese was great, dont get me wrong, but thats all there was to it. there was no hard hitting flavor, and it left me with wanting more. i ate a decent amount in the hopes that it would get better as i ate it, but honestly i think it just needs a little more flavor. i would describe it as the mac and cheese white people discover when they realize they can bake it, and not just cook it on the stove top. also the customer service was just ok. i dont mind nonchalant service, but the worker who helped me do my take out order seemed borderline drunk (but she didnt smell of alcohol so its probably just her personality) and was kinda just all over the place and no where at the same time with getting my order set. the restaurant itself is really cool. id love to come try their cocktails, and maybe ill try their cowboy mac and cheese to find that extra kick.

Black Sheep does mac and cheese so well..... I came here for a quick happy hour and decided to sit outdoors. The area wasn't huge but my party of two happened to be the only ones out there the whole time so it was super nice and peaceful actually. I ordered the Black Sheep Lemonade and all their cocktails I believe are $10 during HH 3-6PM. The drink was super refreshing and they give like pint glass portions so bang for your buck! The drink was the perfect combo of sweet and alcohol taste. The mac and cheese is something else here. My friend is vegetarian so I just got the original mac and cheese but it was so good! I loved the almost burnt crispy crust at the top. It was super cheesy but not a sharp cheddar taste, which isn't my fav. We got a side salad instead of fries because we thought it would be too heavy. The side salad was surprisingly delicious and paired super well with the mac and cheese. Our server was super nice and came to check on us even though we were the only ones sitting back outdoors. Service was fast and friendly and I would definitely come back! It's definitely not the biggest bar downtown but it's cozy and gets the job done.

Came Sunday afternoon.. the bartender was so nice and welcoming . Had Chicken Salad. Really fresh,yummy, and filling. Good tunes, nice people.

For a moment I hadn't realized I had been here before with a friend, I always thought it was in Paso. Needless to say, I was super excited when I realized this was the spot I had the mac n cheese! It gives a hole in the wall type of vibe. You walk-in to the bar/restaurant area and sit yourself. Or you can walk all the way to the back and you get the patio. Both time I sat in the patio, and it was pretty nice and chill for nice conversation and to relax. It has outdoor heaters so if it gets a little chilli they're on. However, it does not have an overhead, so be mindful if it's too hot or raining. It does have a great wall of plants. The service was great. We didn't wait too long, I don't remember the servers name- so sorry. But she was great and provided suggestions for food. The mac n cheese with the chile verde was bomb diggidity good! I got the cup because the full is HUGE. Then my bf (who refuses to be my bf) got 2 fish tacos that he enjoyed. And we got a full plate of nachos and it is huge and can potentially be shared by 4 people. My only warning to that, is if you do not have a tough stomach for beans be near the bathroom. As he was in the bathroom in less than 30min give or take lmao. For the drinks he got the coconut margarita. He says it only had an after taste of the coconut. I had the caribean something- if you like tiki drinks- this is it.

Just overall bad and sticky... server was nice,and I was excited about the pics I saw of the food. Won't be going back. We probably left 75% of our food to be thrown away.

Excellent cocktails, the best loaded Mac n cheese, welcoming staff, cozy friendly environment. This place is our default restaurant/bar any day of the week. Think: comfort food/comfort beverages. Good for date night, meeting friends, or sit solo at the bar.

A very discrete hole in the wall with a lively ambiance, great customer service, and delicious food, there's so much to like about Black Sheep Bar & Grill. They are mostly recognized for their mac and cheese, and they have a BUNCH of options. You could also make your own! I ordered their Cowboy Mac which has Buffalo chicken and my friend ordered their Western Burger with a side of classic Mac. The Cowboy Mac had a great flavor with a Buffalo sauce that complimented the cheesy noodles perfectly. My friend enjoyed the Western Burger and although you have no background on his food palate and probably don't care, he rated it a "8.9". The portions are generous, so you might have some yummy food to take home. Also don't be intimidated by the bar atmosphere if you aren't a fan, they also have a very nice patio to enjoy the nice SLO weather! Definitely a must try!

Always great service, food is delicious, and the atmosphere is perfect. They accommodated a group of 8, no questions asked, and they did it with a smile!

We had fish n chips. The fish was not great. Chewy and tough. I'd say bordering on flavorless. Tons of skinny French fries. Ambience was pretty good, but you couldn't hear the music, just everyone else talking. They only had one waitress on a Sunday night (bummer! Every table was filled). Now, this has nothing to do with the pub, but the college guy next to us with his parents was coughing continuously!! Geesh! Don't go out if you're sick!!

We popped in for lunch while walking around downtown. I was planning on ordering a turkey burger, but while deciding the lady next to us was served the mac and cheese. It looked too good to pass up, so we ordered it with a side of garlic fries. The mac and cheese was perfect, crispy and broiled on top and creamy deliciousness underneath. The fries were cooked perfectly and we practically licked the plate. Large enough to share as well. Service was great from the bartender and I noticed the back patio was really cute.

We popped in to the Black Sheep for a drink one day. We're not ageists but sometimes the SLO Bars can have a young/college crowd & we prefer a family vibe. So GLAD, we finally "pulled the trigger". What a fun place. Very close to the atmosphere we enjoyed in England. Diverse age group that even included a little one. Family oriented, excellent, creamy macaroni & cheese in generous portions and lots of laughter & hearty conversations. We had cocktails, me - the Lady Bird & it wasn't memorable but still a refreshment that did the trick. We had such a good time here. Loved the fireplace on a chilly day too. Service was good, friendly, with lots of smiles & cordiality. Space was clean & cozy. We will definitely mark it on our list for best places in SLO.

It was a busy day due to the england game so I understand that things get backed up since there were only two servers serving the whole bar. Was disappointed with the attitude I received from the server at the bar when I asked if we order there and if we could just have two waters for our table. She refused to give me waters and said my server would be out to give me some and that they're really busy. I completely understand being busy, I just wanted water. Server that brought us water was nice

The food was delicious and came in very large portions. We were just traveling through, so we couldn't enjoy the multiple libations, but the one I did try was wonderful. Very courteous service!

Walked into this college town bar and didn't think too much of it at first but we were pleasantly surprised by the attentiveness of our server Laura. The food was flavorful, hot, fresh and the quality surpassed our expectations. Overall very impressed!

Needs a hook for purses in the restroom. Otherwise, it was a pleasant dining experience.
