Lisbon Was Just Named the Best Culinary City Destination in Europe — Here Are Must-eat Places, According to a Local

"Discover all the best Portuguese wines by paying a visit to Black Sheep. The bar is dedicated to collecting wines from small, independent producers, and its staff is wildly knowledgeable about every single drop. "American sommelier Brian Patterson, his wife, Jenn, and their massive Leonberger-Retriever mix, Bear (the Beartender!) are the consummate hosts at Lisbon's newest, most interesting, and surely smallest wine bar. Located on pretty Praça das Flores in Principe Real, Patterson curates his all-natural wine list with a laser focus on small producers from around Portugal. He sources his finds on reconnaissance drinking missions around the country, including some of Portugal's more underdog wine regions. His updated-daily chalkboard menu includes a half dozen or so offerings by the glass (€3.50-7) along with two batch cocktails, as well as intriguing bar snacks to accompany (his hummus is destination-worthy in and of itself). The bar doubles as a bottle shop; rightfully so, there is only room at the bar for about 11 provided everyone is sucking in their wine guts. File under: Wine Revelation."

A wine bar literally the size of my bedroom! The guys behind the bar are very knowledgeable and helpful, so a good glass or two or wine is guaranteed. This is the first stop on my trip to Lisbon and I'm very happy indeed.

I loved this wine bar so much! It is vibrant, full of good wine choices, there is a park next to it where you can sit and enjoy your drink. Price per glass ranges from €6 to €20. The staff is cool, they let you sample wines before ordering and they also give you good recommendations. You can take tour glass to the park, but you need to leave a deposit.

Amazing experience. They had a pop up that night, with the brewery Pils taking over their kitchen; so I don’t know how the atmosphere and small food selection they have will be on another night - but the evening we experienced was top notch. Great wine selection and even better service. The wine that was chosen to match our food was just perfect, and very, very nicely introduced. Staff came several times to check on us through our dinner, making sure we had the best time. That night, it felt like everyone knew each other, with customers from different tables talking to each other and staff hugging customers upon arrival and leaving. Only bad point is we didn’t get a hug 🥲 😆 We were 2, shared all the food and paid around 60-65€ for 4 dishes and a dessert and 40€ for an amazing bottle of wine.

Make a point of trying never to make bad reviews. Started well, got recommended some nice wine - moved to the second space for some food. From that point we didn’t get offered another glass of wine or have our water filled up for like nearly two hours. Just felt pretty neglected, tough when the space is nice and I went here on a recommendation. I’m all for chilling on a shift, but like it’s not that hard to offer me a glass of wine is it, shame. 👽

Simple , authentic , made perfectly! Black Sheep is what I imagine when I think of a properly made wine bar . Big selection of wine by the glass , easy atmosphere, nice music & top class hospitality by our guest Rafael ! Will definitely come back !

As travelers in Lisbon and natural wine lovers, we found this wine bar exceptional. We like the concept of no wine menu, just talk with the very kind, welcoming, calm, and knowledgeable sommeliers about your wine preferences, and they will let you try different wines until you find what you are searching for. I described the sommelier as “calm” because I mistakenly knocked the bottles of wine, which spilled about a glass on the floor, but he was genuinely calm and friendly. Their wine choices are great, and we were super blessed with what we tried. There are few food choices, but it's great for an after-dinner visit.

Went here for the first time and was absolutely impressed! The sommeliers are super knowledgeable and helpful. There is no menu, so the concept is for them to bring a few options for you to try according to your taste, until you find the right one. Will definitely be coming back.

What a shame. I moved to Lisbon the year this place opened, and I’ve watched it lose the soul it once had. Tonight we went to Black Sheep for a friend’s celebration - 3 glasses, a few bottles, nothing complicated. When my friend left early, she returned her glass to the bar and even texted me to say so. Later, the staff insisted one glass was “missing” and refused to listen or consider anything we explained. We were charged for a glass we had already returned. And here’s the thing: I understand the deposit system and why they use it. But when the system fails, the customer pays - even when the bar will inevitably find the glass later. That’s not just rigid, it’s getting money for something that wasn’t actually lost. It wasn’t about the amount. It was the attitude: zero trust, zero curiosity, zero willingness to engage. Just a robotic “no.” It feels like customer care has been replaced by profit-first thinking. If you want natural wine in the neighborhood, go to Magnolia or bring your own bottle to Praça das Flores. Black Sheep used to feel alive. Now it feels indifferent - guided more by turnover than by hospitality.
