15 Best Coffee Shops in Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"All the usual suspects are present—from long black to flat white, mocha, cappuccino, latte, and hot chocolate—but remember you’re here for the sugar hit! Namely, Black Star Pastry's Insta-famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake, with fragrant layers of almond dacquoise (similar to meringue), rose-scented cream, watermelon, and strawberries, garnished with pistachios and dried rose petals. Other sweet delights include orange cake with Persian figs, lemon myrtle chiffon, and raspberry lychee. Pastries span buttery palmiers, custard flans, frangipane tarts, and macadamia brownies." - Sophie Davies

We walked in the shop where is just located at opposite side of train station. We aimed at the signature Strawberry Watermelon Cake, so didn't ordered the coffee. The cake was really freshy and in perfect textual even with juicy fruit. We also ordered Zen Cheesecake. To us, we would highly recommend Zen Cheesecake which was surprisingly tasty, as it served with great balance between cheese and sesame favours. There were only few seats, takeaway may be a good choice.

Located at 1/325 King Street, Newtown, New South Wales, Australia 🇦🇺 I originally came here for the signature Strawberry Watermelon Cake and it did not disappoint! I absolutely loved 🥰 it! Over my repeated visits to sample a lot more of the cakes and pastries and I have loved them all. From the Pistachio Cake, Mango Yuzu Cake, Lime Forest Cake, Dragon Fruit Cake - they are all phenomenal. Even the delicious croissants. The staff are friendly and helpful, always willing to help in any way. I would like more tables and chairs, not just the high chairs near the windows. Not great for short people like me. Hard to get into. The cakes, I feel are quite expensive but the taste made up for that. I come here, whenever I make it to Newtown and I always look forward to it. Would definitely recommend. Thumbs Up from me!! 👍👍😋

This little pastry shop is so cute 😍, the plates, the cups, the takeaway packaging and etc. are all very unique, like the design. We arrived just before 11 am on Saturday, the restaurant was not very busy, the staff were friendly, helpful, and patient. The watermelon cake is yummy as always, not watery, and tastes fresh.

Just had my second coffee of the day! Tried the Strawberry Watermelon Cake and Zen (black sesame) Cheesecake - both were amazing. And you know St. Ali's coffee never lets me down; it's one of my go-tos. The vibe here is so chill and cozy, and the staff are really friendly. Can't wait to hang out here again soon!

First try was seven years ago and yes, they are famous for watermelon cake.🍉 Even the price gets higher and the size gets smaller, I might still recommend it. However, I was blown away by their pastry. Couldn’t remember its name in the first picture but can’t forget how it was tasted. Amazing!! The fulfilled feeling maintained and treat my day.🙂 Have tried several pastry stores and already known nowadays new and unique styles of pastry. But sometimes, you realize it is hard to be good at a simple thing. I might try their different pastries these days to prove my point of view.

Yes the watermelon cake is awesome !! 100% awesome and hands 🙌 up !! But before the portion was decent and the price too !! Now it’s $11 for a small tiny sample !! You kidding me !!? Why !! Some shops now makes an imitation of it and it tastes as good, bigger and cheaper !! Why are you being greedy !! We are in business too and we know cost of goods are high, labour and rent !! Etc etc !! But $11 for that tiny little cake is an absolute day time robbery

Flat white was scorching hot - burnt the roof of my mouth. Barista didn't have a temperature gauge on the milk and couldn't have cared less. I've drunk thousands of cups of coffee and I've NEVER had one burn the roof of my mouth. ZERO apology from staff. Customer service was nonexistent. Iconic brand, that has lost its magical touch. Such a shame :-(

Tried the famous strawberry watermelon cake. It lived up to the hype for sure. We also tried the lemon pistachio cake. It was the right balance of sweet and sour. BUT… the customer service here is horrible. Firstly, there are limited seats - 8 bar stools to be exact. We asked the staff for help as we were holding 2 plates and a drink. We needed a seat and there were customers who had already finished their food and drinks. They refused to help and ignored our request. So, we had to stand right in front of the cake / pastry display in the corner to eat. It was so frustrating as we were blocking incoming patrons. After we finished, we wanted to order a ham and cheese croissant to go. We saw a staff placing it on a tray and was about to wrap it. WE KNEW THAT they still had it but refused to serve it as it was 30 mins to closing time. IN SHORT, HORRIBLE SERVICE, NICE CAKE BUT NOT WORTH THE EXPERIENCE AND WE WON’T BE COMING BACK.
