Blackbird Doughnuts Newton Centre

Coffee is always bad here. Even the good old black coffee is bad. This isn’t very difficult to get right at all. Why is the coffee so bad? Donuts are inconsistent. I’ve been here 20+ times and about half the time there was something wrong with my donut. Most frequent problem is a donut that smells and tastes like frying oil. BUT on a good day, they make a hell of a donut. I mean it, it is very, very good. The bite and the chew of the dough, the yeasty fresh smell, the toppings are never too sweet or too much, the custard in the Boston crème is to die for… But this is only half the time. Why? And the only other thing I got was an egg sandwich which I honestly found appalling. It was stale, tiny, and looked sad. It was the kind of sandwich you’d find at a gas station from a freezer. Forget selling it for as much as you do, you shouldn’t be giving that terrible thing away for free. Also, the wait times are very inconsistent because there’s always one poor employee there trying to keep up with a smile on their face. It isn’t always the same person, but it is always one person. So any increase in demand quickly overwhelms them. Sometimes you’ll walk in and out, other times it’ll be 15 minutes. Why? Every employee seems to be trying to “wing it” too, doing things in different orders or in different ways, etc. HELP THEM! Doesn’t look like you guys train them or ask them what they need. All in all, feels like unsuccessful execution kept afloat by a successful recipe, and pretty appealing branding. If they don’t find a solution for their very basic supply chain failures though, I’m not sure whether they’ll be able to grow further without sacrificing even more quality.

Best donuts in the area! Their donuts are incredible in flavor. They’re light, fluffy, and delicious - my kids request them every week! Our favorites are vanilla glaze, everything donut, and the Apple fritter. Sometimes they have savory tarts which are SO good. We especially love the pride donuts they have every June. Blackbird employees are always so friendly and welcoming as well, which is also appreciated. Blackbird also delivers through DoorDash, and the donuts are always delivered fresh. The Newton location does not have a bathroom, fyi but that does not detract from the amazing food! Thank you Blackbird for being such a wonderful addition to our community!

Ordered some donuts ahead of time because I was in the area. These donuts are sooooo good! I had the cinnamon sticky bun donut and a bite of the salted toffee one, and i was BLOW AWAY! The texture of the donut alone was amazing. Never mind the toppings and the fillings. A little on the pricey side, but they are good. It's a must try.

Went this morning for doughnuts for a function. The cashier/baker was super helpful and knowledgeable about the ingredients in each doughnut. He also was incredibly friendly. Will definitely return for my own breakfast in the near future.

The donuts are great. The coffee is great. The barrista on duty Sunday , August 11, 2024 not the friendliest guy in America . They have no bathroom . They have plenty of meter parking . Place was clean .

I’ve tried Blackbird multiples times. Creative flavors but both times I’ve tried they are stale and dry, never fresh. The employees are very kind. Donut scene in Boston doesn’t compare to NYC or Chicago but expected this to be better for the price point.

Delicious doughnuts and lattes + the nicest staff you’ll ever meet. Wish I could give 6/5 stars for service, genuinely cannot emphasize how lovely all of the people working at Blackbird are.

Blackbird Doughnuts is a classic doughnut shop experience. Inside you will find all of the classic doughnuts, plus maybe one or two interesting seasonal doughnuts. The coffee is what you would expect, or respectable quality with a modest selection that you would find at most other doughnut shops. Blackbird stops short of a five simply because I have been to many other doughnut shops which are pushing the envelope in one way or another and Blackbird just doesn't seem to fit that profile. I can name at least 5 off the top of my head who carry doughnuts that are either more interesting or better executed than Blackbird. It's not a mistake to come here, you'll be pleasantly satisfied with your doughnut and coffee experience. Just don't expect to be wowwed or inspired by what they have for sale here. They're doughnuts, they're coffee, they are what you'd expect.

Always a fan of blackbird donuts, you can really taste the difference in high quality. This location has very limited breakfast/sandwich items given its small storefront, compared to the Harvard Square location. There is plenty of metered parking out front, which is nice. It's also right off the Green Line station. Lots of small business and stores nearby, make it easy to access. The cashier is friendly. It wasn't busy when I visited. There are some limited seating inside.

" Fresh & delicious " The food here is fresh & delicious. The service is so friendly. The vibe is welcoming. Parking is difficult it manageable. The prices are fare .

The donuts are very good and service also pretty good and when it is not busy it doesn't take that long but when it is a little crowded it might might take a bit longer. The ambiance is pretty good nice place. Overall pretty good would recommend for donuts. 4 stars.

Needed a pick-me-up before class on a Tuesday, so my friend and I stopped in at Blackbird for a coffee and snack. We were fist taken aback by how spotless the place was; from the countertops to the floors, the restaurant was super clean. The barista was helpful in explaining donut options and their more popular drinks. I ordered a large, hot toasted marshmallow latte and a chai donut. My friend had a large iced latte. I think I actually got an espresso donut (which could have been bad if I had allergy considerations) but it was delicious nonetheless. My latte was solid as well, and my friends was really tasty. The iced drinks definitely look a little more appealing than the hot ones, but yummy either way! Parking is easy in Newton Centre and there are two window bars for eating. Loved it!

I was in mood for a toasted bagel but the bagel shop was closed. I saw this Blackbirds donuts and open . Decided to give a try. Well , interesting different flavors. We tried a carrot cake, Boston creme. Both donuts fresh and very hearty in size and volume... not an only Dunkin donut donut here. The carrot cake was like eating a slice of carrot cake . The frosty alone would be a day exercising off calories. Very good as a desert donut. Next the Boston cream was doughy with a chew. Frosting ok. The custard again just ok. Heavy donut and full size. 4.00 for carrot cake, 3.75 for the Boston Cream. A dozen could be an expensive ordeal.

They have my favorite donuts! I also love the people who work there, they're so friendly! Whenever by any of their locations I always make sure to grab a box of donuts

One of my favorite donut chains in Boston area. I love their new monthly flavors. This time I got the Lemon Ricotta Bismarck & Blueberry Lavender. I liked the blueberry lavender as it has a good hint of lavender but not overpowering. The lemon Bismarck was fully filled and wasn't too sweet which I appreciate. Neither flavor blew me away but we're both good. I also tried their blueberry lavender matcha. Kind of tasted like a yogurt matcha drink and probably wouldn't get again. I also wish the milk was steamed hotter and creamier.

I am a Blackbird fan. New to this location. Quaint little store in a quaint little city center. The service is efficient. I was in and out. What did I walk away with? Everything donut- FLAVOR ERUPTION immediately! Was it garlic? Is it the onion? I don't know but the concept is super smart. A donut cut int he middle. The middle is then slathered ina cream cheese frosting that is not sweet like frosting but not too heavy like regular cream cheese. Just the right balance. Then the donut is put back together again and the 'everything'; aspect is added to the top of the donut. It gives an everything bagel lover who doesn't want the heaviness a perfect solution! Maple brain- decent size, great for snacking on for a period of time. A lite maple which I find refreshing. Fully glazed which is great! Soft interior.

Blackbird Doughnuts has alighted in Newton Center, and I took home a bananas foster $3.50 ($3.75 after tax). It was a soft and fluffy donut with a sweet frosting and garnished with a banana chip. Service was pleasant, but you have to ask for a receipt if you want one. As I was leaving, I noticed a board stating that ice cream doughnut sandwich is $6.

Not as expected, guess I'm spoiled by regular "cheap" donuts and pastries. I stopped in for a donut and some cinnamon rolls, and didn't know what was in store! They both were HUGE and I ended up with 10 pounds (not literally, I think, didn't actually weigh them) --of cinnamon rolls that were not the very best I've ever eaten honestly. Yes they're homemade but not worth the money or the calories. The pastry dough was good enough I suppose but not soft especially the next day (yes, I know how to properly reheat pastries so they're really good the next day too!). And to me cinnamon rolls should be sticky/ gooey soft and not too chewy. I still have to give them a good rating because the store is really nice, beautiful and inviting. Just not a 5 star for me.

Saw the review from Caliope below and man. What a salty, salty gremlin. Not very nice. We had a different experience at Blackbird - the people at the store were friendly and welcoming, and the donuts were tasty. I'm old school so my favorite was the vanilla glazed. Which was very good! We tried some of the other donuts too - not a huge fan of cake donuts but their version was also quite tasty. Not much else to add!

What a let down! I had fallen in love with Blackbird but I hadn't gone in a while. Our donuts, sandwich and banana bread were all cold. The sandwich was ice cold?!!! I understand keeping them In the refrigerator but not warming them for the customers is insane. The banana bread on top of cold was hard. A complete waste of $.

The doughnuts here were really good and I would highly recommend this place. I got the everything bagel doughnut and the apple butter bismark and both were really tasty. This location is small and there are only a few little tables but if you are grabbing and going that isn't a problem. There were only 2 employees working at this location when I was there. They did a great job but seemed slightly overwhelmed with any online orders coming in and the few walk ins.

Definitely try these donuts! They have special donuts as well as some classics. The everything bagel donut w/ cream cheese in the middle was so unexpectedly delicious. The topping had great crunch and texture and the light texture and sweet taste of the brioche donut was delicious! The lemon coconut don't was a perfect blend of flavors. I kept missing the cinnamon roll but had another option w cinnamon cream in it and a great frosting on top and it was just good by suggestion of the employee.

I'd read about this place in The Boston Globe and was really excited to try it. Went in around 10AM in the middle of July and ordered 2 honey dip style donuts. The icing was wet from soaking up water from the ambient humidity. Either keep the donuts in a humidity controlled space or modify the menu for the summer. Disappointing.

Excited I got the chance to stop in. Tried the everything bagel donut, which I was skeptical of - but it was pretty great! The "cream cheese" was a very subtle tasting cream cheese frosting, and the donut was sliced like a bagel with the frosting in the middle. It was a little sweet and savory, and surprisingly delicious. Cannot wait to go back and try something else!

This review is for catering. Ordered $250 in donuts. Asked for the donut wall in which the website stated that all I needed was a refundable deposit to get it. After I paid I was told that I have to double my order to get the donut wall. Not only does this break a couple of consumer laws, like bait and switch, but it is a bad business practice. I initially thought this was an honest mistake but their refusal to update their policies to the website makes me wonder if its on purpose. You are also not allowed to order in the stores, where you can ask questions, and have to use the website where they can control you with misinformation. All I ever received for my complaint is excuses and no accountability. My solution was to update the website with their policies so it doesn't happen to the next person. Their solution is for me to shut up and go away. They feel that laws and good business practices don't apply to them because they are a small business who answers emails from home. And I do not have a complaint about their policies or their minimum requirements. My complaint is in the timing of when they tell you. Who wouldn't be upset to learn about minimum requirements after they paid? Then the first thing they did in their reply to my complaint was to publicly post my personal information that they obtained through a private business transaction which breaks privacy laws and continues bad business policies. They posted my last name to intimidate me to take down an honest review. They then attacked me personally, calling me unhinged, because I refuse to accept their excuses. The donuts are great. The store employees are great. But I would not use them for catering.

Very dense, heavy doughnuts, with some cool flavor combinations. I'm usually not a doughnut person but I guess being in the land of Dunkin Donuts has clicked something into place for me, because ever since we moved here, I've woken up every morning with a serious craving for them. Tucked into a side street in Newton Centre and directly facing a T stop, this particular location of Blackbird is a great pit stop between the gym and my apartment. The guy working the cashier was super nice as I was dithering about the display case, trying to figure out what to order. I had my heart set on the chocolate old-fashioned as well as the peach jam bismarck (which had sold out already when I got there by 10:30), so I ended up going with the apple fritter and the Boston creme. Of the three, I liked the old-fashioned the best, though be warned, it's really heavy. (Should have ordered some coffee to go with it.) The apple fritter one, I found disappointing - it reminded me of slightly stale funnel cake and had an oily aftertaste. Next time, I want to try the vanilla glaze and the everything bagel (sounds ... interesting, to say the least). Can't wait to try some of their seasonal flavors as well.

OMG ~ $4.71 EACH ! The reward was ~ they were extremely good. Put this on your "Bucket List" :-)

Friendly service, but the donuts are just ok. The flavors are inventive but aren't always well executed, and at the price premium I don't think it's worth it. The highlight is the salted toffee, while the brown butter sage was admittedly pretty disgusting. One warning - they told me that management does not give them credit card tips. Cash tips go to workers, but management keeps the credit card tips which is disappointing and scammy given how good the service the was. Do better to your employees, Blackbird.

I only came here to do a DoorDash, and the guy, I am so sorry I am not sure of his name, he worked New Year's Day Morning 2025. Very respectful and such a positive attitude while I patiently waited for the order. Next time, I would come here on my own time to grab a quick bite. The ambiance is great as well. Awesome start to my year.

I broke up with my boyfriend and on the same day I ran out of almond milk for my coffee. I went to this cafe near my work and the barista made me the best coffee that I needed so much in a difficult period of my life, and also added cinnamon there. The best coffee.

Donuts are excellent and service was excellent! The ding is I got regular and vegan and they were mixed in the same box when I asked for them separate (which I shouldn't need to ask).

I love how fresh the donuts are but I wish they kept fresh the next day but no complaints.

Delicious! The chocolate old fashioned was so rich and moist and amazing. It didn't have the same texture as an old fashioned that I am used to from chicago but it was delicious nonetheless. Looking forward to my next visit to Boston to try more flavors!

We had hear good things about this place and tried it. Impulsively bought a dozen donuts, various kinds, but we were really disappointed. I won't lie they all were eaten eventually lol but we had no desire to go back again.

Another great blackbird location! I've ordered ahead a few times here and pickup is always quick and easy. Most recently, I've tried out their holiday donuts which included their chocolate peppermint, gingerbread, and hot cocoa bismark. The hot chocolate bismark was my favorite out of this bunch. I really enjoyed the hot chocolate mix powder and the cream inside wasn't too sweet. I'm usually not a fan of cake donuts, but the chocolate peppermint donut was good. If you're looking for a sweet treat, definitely try a donut from blackbird. They also have drinks - coffee and tea to go along with your donuts. You can also order donut cakes or ice cream donut sandwiches!

Can a donut be worth $3.50? I asked myself this question and then asked my friend the same question. My friend's answer was a definite yes. Taking my friend's word, I bought a donut from Blackbird Doughnuts for $3.50. I've had plenty of donuts in Atlanta, which has many great donut shops. Blackbird Doughnuts is definitely on par with those great donut shops. I ordered the Death by Chocolate donut, which is a cake donut topped with cookie crumbs and sprinkles with chocolate mousse. Basically, it had all of the elements you could possibly want in a chocolate donut. The donut itself had excellent texture and the chocolate mousse was amazing. I probably should have gone back to buy another one, because the specials rotate. I was also impressed by how the donut was sweet, but not too sweet. I definitely recommend that you try this donut place out if you haven't yet.

Super excited Blackbird opened in Newton! I've been a customer for years in Boston. Happy to have great doughnuts outside the city...finally! Yummy and lots of unique flavors. The everything doughnut is actually so good and tastes just like a bagel...seems weird on the surface for sure! I love how Blackbird has beverages like coffee! Newton Centre lacks local coffee shops so it's awesome to have this option!! I visited on a Saturday morning and found the staff very friendly and helpful! I'll obviously be back!!

When I lived by Fenway this was my favorite spot to go in the morning! Imagine my pleasaNt surprise when one opens up last week by me in newton! Super standardly gorgeous open inside, there's a little glass box with each donut in it in case you're torn. Coffee is fantastic too! And the 2 guys working were such a happy breath of fresh air from the cold! I gOt a snowcap donut and latte. They have a rewards punch card, and are steps away from the T, so I'll be a regular here!

I love Blackbird Doughnuts and have had them multiple times, but this was my first time at this location. The server was very friendly and sweet. The location was very clean and easy to find (right across the street from Newton Centre T Stop!) Their Vanilla Old-Fashioned Donuts (aka The Blackbird) and Chocolate Old-Fashioned Donuts are perfection. I got a half dozen donuts (primarily for myself - birthday week, don't judge) and I got 2 Chocolate Old-Fashioned, 1 Blackbird, 1 Gingerbread, 1 Boston Cream, and 1 Vanilla Glaze along with a Large Hot Chocolate. This was my first time trying the Boston Cream and Gingerbread, along with the Hot Cocoa as well. Boston Cream and Gingerbread were good, but don't beat the old-fashioned donuts I enjoy. The hot cocoa was the biggest and saddest disappointment because it was awful. Like so bad that I had a few sips in hopes in would get better and ended up tossing it. Moving forward, I think I'll just stick with their Vanilla and Chocolate Old-Fashioned donuts and be content. Still recommend though!

The shop has a rotating classics selection, as well as monthly additions. I like the combination of this--you can have your reliable favorites, and also try others as they come in monthly! I tried the marble cake donut and vegan grapefruit poppy brioche donut--and both were great. Looking forward to trying more!

Growing up in the Philippines where ube cream donut is a staple favorite at Dunkin Donuts, I've been craving for almost two decades for an ube type doughnuts in the United States. To my surprise, Blackbird Doughnuts in Newton Centre is selling an ube donut for the summer season! As a Filipino ube lover, this doughnut is pure perfection. It was fresh and not sickeningly sweet. Please make this a staple doughnut flavor!

Such a cute shop and the staff is so friendly and helpful! I'm obsessed with their cookie doughnut- it's a hybrid between a chocolate chip cookie and a doughnut (think cronut (the croissant donut hybrid) but combined with a cookie instead). It's absolutely amazing, highly recommend. We've also had their other donuts and they've all been delicious. Highly recommend!

Stopped by Blackbird Doughnuts during my last trip to Boston and overall enjoyed my doughnut! I got the pumpkin spice latte doughnut which had a lovely glaze on the top and a pumpkin pastry cream in the center. Overall pretty enjoyable and would go there again!

We got Cherry Pie Bismarck - BombBomb so delicious, coconut macaroon glazed- @vice_ant stated it was good and better than the his 2nd choice Boston Cream. Doughnuts was pretty good. My husband and I wanted to check out this place when we went to Boston because everyone had good things to say about this place and it was highly recommended and I have to say they did not disappoint !

"Blackbird Donuts" is awesome! I love their fresh, fluffy brioche bun donuts. My favorite is the Boston cremé brioche bun. The second favorite is the classic chocolate sprinkles. The vanilla glaze is definitely sweeter than most but delicious. The iced coffee is $5+ but they include flavors. Their cappuccinos with oat milk are the bomb!

This review is for the donut cake. The pictures are deceiving, it looks like a small cake, but not as small as it actually is! When we opened the box we were all speechless that I had paid 26$ for the smallest cake ever. It is 2 small donuts stacked covered in frosting. The taste was delicious but it is absurd to charge that much for essentially 2 donuts which would be 7$. Picture for size reference

Right around May I had this INSATIABLE CRAVING for doughnuts. I spent countless hours searching for the best donut. It came down to my birthday we had donuts instead of cake. I was comparing Blackbird to Kane's and union square. And... the winner is.... All 3 You can't compare them. They are too different but everyone should be able to find something they like. Blackbird has HUGE like insanely huge donuts. My husband likes these donuts the best. They were covered or filled with unique and tasty toppings. And the cake was just ridiculously thick. I think a donut could be shared three ways, maybe four and no one would leave without feeling satiated. I like a nice honey dipped and this wasn't the place for that. But for a cake donut with wonderful, fresh, decadent toppings. Come here. Come early though. They sell out. And if they sell out.... It's your own damn fault for not getting there early enough. Don't blame them. They are lovey people making a lovey donut.

I have to say this is one of the worst café experiences I have ever had. Came in kind of giddy, because I used to work at Coffee Connection in Newton center, which was in the same or close spot to this café. I said this to the young man behind the counter who literally said nothing to me and just looked annoyed. Then I ordered a mocha; he rang it up without any kind of friendliness. And then proceeded to fill half of the cup with foam. It was nearly 5 dollars. I asked him to dump out some of the foam and fill it up with either coffee or oat milk, which is what I had in my mocha. He proceeded to dump out half the mocha and fill it up with coffee. It tasted terrible. Then I asked him for a scoop of cocoa. You can imagine he wasn't very pleasant about that either. It tastes like hate. Needless to say, he didn't get a tip from a former barista. I could not be bothered ever come back to this location. So to the owners, I encourage you to better train your staff or hire people who actually value their job and understand what it means to be a front person in a business. They are the face of your enterprise and his was pretty sour today. Also, as a woman of color being treated rudely on by a cold, angry white tween, I have to wonder if race is the reason. So maybe some DEI training, as well. Honest suggestions.

I love donuts and blackbird always hits the spot. All the classics are good, and I love seeing what their monthly flavors are. Also love that they always have a few vegan options. Yum!

Oh wow. I just got two donuts from Blackbirds. Obviously better than Dunkin. But better than Kane's? Absolutely. Dense but not too dense. Perfectly slathered in glaze. Just really, really good.

Wow. These might be the best doughnuts we have ever had. First of all I'm. It really a bug doug it person but they have vegan options so we stopped I. After having breakfast across the street. My husband loved the Boston Cream and I had a vegan blackberry filled. They were both nothing short of amazing. More like full on dessert than a donut. The blackberry filled was topped with a cinnamon crumble. So good. We will definitely be back and soon!

If you haven't had a Blackbird Donut, you are missing out on a delicious treat. They are mouthwatering good. I make it a point to get to a shop at least every other week. The choices are between 'good' to 'very good'. My favorites are the Carrot Raspberry, and the Sugar Toffee.

We got doughnuts delivered for a second time and they were amazing. My favorite was the snowball, a coconut brioche doughnut that's a seasonal offering. I also enjoyed the London Fog with Earl Grey flavored pastry cream and a Boston Cream doughnut. Hubby was happy with the two vegan doughnuts and a chocolate doughnut.

This place has the best doughnuts in town and the best staff too. The chocolatey cake donuts aren't bitter at all and they melt in your mouth. The brioche dough they use for their raised doughnuts has the right amount of bounce back. The vanilla glazed is to die for! And the staff is helpful and energetic!

I appreciate the quality ingredients and the skill in producing these beautiful donuts. Came up short in flavor for me. The salted caramel frosting on one of the donuts I purchased was definitely tasty. The rest - I couldn't have distinguished one from another. I expected this to be a delicious donut that would taste wonderful "naked" and this wasn't it. Will try again and see if I hit on a better selection.
