"Blackbird Cafe on the corner of Nicollet Avenue and 38th Street has announced it has closed its doors as of this morning. The restaurant has endured hardships before, but a recent string has proved too much for the owner. Originally, Blackbird was originally located at 50th and Aldrich, but a fire that began inside a neighboring restaurant destroyed that location and Blackbird relocated to its current address. The charming neighborhood restaurant has always been a morning through night neighborhood bistro with creative takes on comfort food, and a lovely wine list. The interior was a boho mix of vintage charm with modern touches that made it feel cozy, intimate, and timeless. The current owner purchased the business from the founders over a year ago and according to Blackbird’s farewell Facebook post, it’s been an uphill battle of vandalism, road construction, and shifting dining trends. “We fought through the road closures, burglary, a dwindling talented work force, and ever increasing costs to try and provide a neighborhood establishment that was welcoming to all,” the post reads. “Unfortunately, no matter how much we tried, it just wasn’t enough.” Blackbird Cafe receives the dubious honor of the first official closing of 2020, reminding diners, “Thanks again and keep supporting your independent neighborhood restaurants!”" - Joy Summers

I stopped in briefly expecting to have a coffee and to catch up on a little work. Unfortunately this location does not have Wi-Fi which was the only downside whatsoever. I had the sweet potato biscuits.... they were incredible! Warm, flakey and delish with homemade jam. The coffee was also outstanding and the service was very good. I hope to return some time and enjoy a meal, relax and not have to worry about work. I would have given five stars if there would have been Wi-Fi although it probably ultimately it's not something that should impact my decision. I look forward to returning. Great atmosphere and great food.

Such a great place to start your day. From the homey atmosphere when you first set foot in the door, to the familiar Midwest service we all love, rounded off by heaping helping of comfort on a plate, this is easily one of the best breakfast/lunch/brunch places uptown. Plenty of options on the menu to choose from, whether you fancy something sweet or a more savory option. Prices are what you would expect for an offering this scrumptious. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the uptown area.

Accommodating and friendly service and straightforward menu in an up and coming neighborhood. Our party of three had the blood orange salad, burger of the day and scallops plus an order of fries. All was quite tasty. The ambiance is quirky yet upscale. My only criticism is that the portions could be larger and the pretense could be smaller...I'm not saying that the place is pretentious but it is rather like they are trying a bit too hard. By a strange twist of fate this was my second visit to this restaurant in as many visits to the city. I had just forgotten that I had been here before. Anyway, both times were good. :)

Great food and good prices. Had the chicken sausage rice bowl and a sweedish pancake. Ecclectic decor with a fun old TV fish tank up front. Convienent location Minneapolis as well.

A great lunch spot, with breakfast served through the lunch hours. Excellent for the indecisive. I had the swedish pancakes, which were adequate, the bacon was perfect and my companions red curry with fried tofu was amazing. Inventive cocktails and short but well curated beer and wine lists.

I have usually had brunch here, but just had dinner (get the peanut noodles: perfectly crisp tender veggies and just enough spice) and it was fabulous. Cozy, chill atmosphere and good food.

Excellent interior, feel, and energy. Good wine selection, no hard liquor. The savory popcorn is spectacular.

Blackbird is a great little neighborhood spot, a bit more upscale and pricey than the surrounding restaurants. Seasoning and quality on the food is always very good. Better for dates or friends than just dropping in alone, good happy hour menu. Service is a little slow but that's because they're mostly packed all the time, staff are good about checking in with you and keeping you hydrated. The kitchen does no substitutions. They did change their bahm mi bread from baguette to some soft crustless bread recently too.
