Continuing on our tour of Newton bakeries we hop behind the wheel of our Chevy and travel to Blacker's Bakeshop, a little Jewish establishment located halfway up Comm Ave. We dodge a few runners tearing past on their way to marathon glory and wonder how many miles we'll need to work off the treats we're about to consume.
Yes, it's a Jewish bakery and the challah is as good as any in Newton. In fact, for freshness of ingredients it's either quite near, or at the top. Examples: I down a turnover...and you notice that there is raspberry juice flowing out as I grab a napkin. That's how fresh the fillings are. A fig bar is next and the same thing happens. Mmm.
Bread, in most places, is a rather boring, standard item. Not so for Blacker's as you find out after polishing off come raisin pumpernickel. It's got all of the taste of regular pumpernickel but when fresh raisins are added there is an unusual sweetness that was unexpected...but surprisingly pleasant. I can add similar comments for the corn sissle also. While you are not looking I make it a point to enjoy a couple of pieces of the ruglach we had planned to have at dinner. Couldn't help it.
Of course a Jewish bakery wouldn't be a Jewish bakery without the aforementioned challah and..bagels. Here, although the variety isn't as great as other places, the freshness of the product stands out. This is evident in the onion bagels - very flavorful but not overpowering. You comment that nobody wants an overpoweringly strong onion bagel, and I agree, deciding to stick with the plain variety.
For the lactose intolerant it's great because they don't use dairy products. Blacker's is, in all ways, authentic, kosher/parve, and offering limited hours on weekends (no Saturdays and closing Fridays at sundown during certain times of the year). You observe that this adherence to tradition is reflected in their attention to details and insistence on fresh ingredients. I add that this all results in better quality products. We both agree, staggering out of the door, wondering how long it will take us to work off our latest caloriefest...but waiting impatiently for our next visit.
