OC’s 18 Best Bakeries for Bread, Pastries, and More | Eater LA

"Rachel Klemeck’s Blackmarket Bakery revolutionized the offerings in Orange County when she opened in 2012 at The Camp in Costa Mesa. Klemeck demonstrated her baking prowess as a contestant on The Food Network “Sweets Showdown: Cake!” by taking homestyle flavors and incorporating surprising bursts of fruit. Start with the Blackstrap Betty molasses cookies with bits of dried apricot; chocolate raspberry dotted scones; and Basque batter tarts with citrus cream, berries, and almonds." - Jenn Tanaka

The bakery has a charming atmosphere, exuding a cozy and inviting vibe. I stopped by to order their Champ coffee, but it was nearly impossible to resist treating myself to a dessert. ☕ 😁 After some deliberation, I settled on the Basque Berry Tart. To my delight, it was perfectly balanced—not overly sweet, allowing the natural flavors of the berries to shine through beautifully. The level of sweetness was just right, making it a delightful complement to my coffee.

Stopped in here to get a sandwich to go and I'm a little torn on how to rate this place. I ordered the BLAT and it took 25 minutes for the sandwich to be made. When I got home I was really disappointed to find the bacon was very undercooked, some of it almost raw, so I had to take off all the bacon. Had the bacon been cooked properly it would have been a decent sandwich. On top of that, the service was super slow. Not sure why it took 25 minutes to get raw bacon on a sandwich. In the plus column, their bakery items are very good. I got the peach bread pudding and it was very good.

The best matcha I’ve ever had and a fantastic gluten free treat! The atmosphere was warm and the cashier was delightfully funny! 10/10 would brunch again!

Love this place! Jericho the shift lead/manager was amazing! Attentive, funny and customer oriented! He was so helpful and insightful about the menu. I wanted iced coffee not cold brew and he made it work with drip coffee! The coffee is bomb and the vibe is great- I usually go to the one in normal heights in SD, but stopped in here and honestly Jericho made my day! Highly recommend and give Jericho a raise! 🙌🏼

Five Stars all day long! The food is incredible. The atmosphere is incredible. The service is outstanding. Huge shout out to Jericho, Molly, Ellen, Stella, and everyone else whose name I either don’t know or don’t remember. Everyone there is top notch!

How could I possibly drive by before! Definitely worth the stop. Amazingly tasty and super creative deserts and pastries. Friendly folks. Comfortable place to hang out inside and outside.

We finished eating burgers at Tanners and were actually headed to Vigilante, but we stumbled past Blackmarket and thought we’d give it a try. We like the fact that they make their pastries, loaves of bread, and best of all, their syrups in-house. My friend’s almond latte was delicious and I went with my go-to iced dirty chai. I’ve had better chai but it was still good. The highlight of our visit was the heavenly apricot molasses cookie. Don’t pass this up, it is a worthy cookie!

Black Market Bakery is finally open in South Oceanside! But this gem of a spot is more than just bakery, it's a great pastry shop that I feel many will enjoy. Located on Vista Way in South O and part of the Freeman Collective (just next to HomeState), Black Market Bakery has a parking lot in front of it. There's a little bit of patio seating available and plenty of seating inside. Because of the setup, small groups can also enjoy sitting in both settings. The decor is very modern, trendy and still simple. There was alternative rock & pop playing on their playlist and fit the mood. There restroom is small, simple & clean. They've got cookies, shortbreads, brownies, brittles, tarts, dessert bars, buns, croissants and even cheesecakes. There's also fresh bread baked daily. I'm personally happy that Black Market Bakery is now open and I think it's a benefit to our community.

Yelp
I am a big fan of black market bakery having been a frequent visitor to their Costa Mesa location while working up there for a few weeks not long ago. When I saw there was a black market in Oceanside, I had to stop in. The bakery has a beautiful outdoor and indoor seating areas. The selection was minimal when I got there mid morning, seems to be a busy little bakery. I will have to come back to try their sandwiches, but we took home a few pastries from the case. The strawberry lemon and peanut butter rolls were a bit too sweet to my liking, I think for me personally, as there was quite a bit of icing on the rolls. The cheesecake and s'mores bar were more balanced for my palette, with the s'mores bar being my overall favorite. Again, will have to come back again to try their savory options and maybe different set of pastries.

Yelp
This rating is solely based on the coffee. Let me preface my remarks by saying that in general, Blackmarket Bakery was a nice enough spot. The layout and table arrangement of the place is a bit odd and I don't think it really makes for great dining. It is, however, bright and airy, so that does work in its favor. The staff was friendly and efficient. I had a really good convo with the barista as we talked about San Diego area roasters. He was knowledgeable and seemed like he appreciated being able to speak about his craft. That said, the coffee result was just OK. It was certainly drinkable, but I thought my espresso came out thin and light on flavor. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day or it was just a "punk" coffee that inevitably happens 1 time in 20 or so. But I don't think so; there was enough attention paid to the process that it may very well have been an equipment or beans issue. Whatever the case, I was a bit underwhelmed with the results. I will give BB another try again when I am in the neighborhood, but it certainly didn't rate as a destination spot. With all the great coffee spots along the Coast Highway, I admit that return might take a bit of time...

Yelp
The rating is for the quality of bread. I'm not sure where the quality and care has gone but I recently went in for sourdough and noticed, upon bringing the bread home that quality is oit the door. The loaf seemed stale upon slicing it myself as staff made no attempt to offer it. I ended going to Carlsbad to Pragers as I needed bread for the sandwiches I planned to make but despite them being good - the slices are far too small. At end: one is just better off making the trip to O'Brien's Boulangerie, in Poway, where you get the real deal in sourdough both in taste, size, and sliced upon request. I think I'll just stick to coffee only at Black Market if I ever go again.

Yelp
Needed a quick fix before heading to studio, and stumbled upon this bakery nearby. Loved the open kitchen, so you can see all the goodies coming out, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor seating area, too. Ellen was super sweet and attentive, I grabbed a matcha latte and a chocolate scone. They both were pretty solid. Definitely coming back to try their other goodies.

Yelp
Had a very delicious coffee here, with a hazelnut twist Wish they heated up the twist for me but I will just ask next time Right next to tanners with some pretty iffy parking situation but it's a nice spot to have a quick coffee date I had a latte with some flavoring They don't have flavored beans only syrups which I was disappointed about, and the service was just okay nothing special or memberable They have a little gift shop area as well I will come back to try some other stuff on their menu

Yelp
I was jonesing for Dutch Crunch Bread, and when I did a Yelp search, this place popped up. weird that I've eaten more than a couple of times next door (Tanner's Prime Burger) and across the street (Corner Pizza) and never thought to stroll inside for a quick look around. the young lady at the register was delightful and the display cases we browsed while waiting for our sandwiches were brimming with tempting goodies. my eighteen-year-old got the UNCLE TIGER (bacon, avocado, cheddar, arugula, pickled onions, and chipotle crema on toasted seeded sourdough bread) and gave it two enthusiastic thumbs up. I had the RANCH HAND (bacon, turkey, cheddar, arugula, red onion, chipotle honey crema, and ranch dressing on toasted Dutch Crunch bread) and it also got two enthusiastic thumbs up. we shared (as much as you can share desert with a teenager armed with a spoon he can wield like a broadsword) a CREME BRULEE TART (dark chocolate ganache, vanilla custard, sponge cake, and torched sugar crust). he's been busy mastering the fine art of brûlée making and clearly expressed his opinion that theirs is pretty good but his are better. BLACKMARKET BAKERY is different sort of place. if you're expecting something old-school sandwich-wise, rethink your choice. but if you're flexible enough to enjoy something out of the ordinary, this is a ways down a road less traveled lunch experience.

Yelp
Black Market - Oceanside, CA Perfect stop after Legoland! Great coffee, tasty food, and chill vibes. Their breakfast sandwich is on point--just what we needed before heading back to Ontario. Highly recommend for a quick, satisfying break.

Yelp
What a cute little bakery! Phenomenal almond croissant! I get a lot of almond croissants and this is one of the best. So much filling and topping with tons of flavor. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
Stopped by Blackmarket Bakery and really liked the vibe. It's got an artsy, relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to hang out for a bit. We ordered the breakfast burrito, churro croissants, piña colada matcha, blackberry matcha, and a loaf of lemon rosemary bread. The burrito was the highlight for me. It was super flavorful and easily one of the best I've had in a while. The churro croissants were good but tasted more like a cinnamon pastry than a churro or a croissant. The piña colada matcha wasn't really my thing, but it was interesting and worth trying. The blackberry matcha was great and something I'd definitely order again. I haven't tried the bread yet, but it looks solid. Service was excellent. Everyone working there was friendly and made the experience even better. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
We are the brioche, cinnamon, cinnamon rolls, and a gentleman at the counter offered to heat it up for me He did not have to put the Customer Service seems to be amazing here The pastries are always really good here as well as the coffee

Yelp
I showed up at 10am this morning, excited because of the reviews. Someone was hanging a window sign & I imagined that I stumbled on a "daily special." The sign said PERMANENTLY CLOSED! I missed them by one minute. Veeeeerrrrrryyyy sad.
google avatar

Yelp
Went on a Sunday morning and service was slow for breakfast burritos but it was worth it ! Staff members were really nice. Also, the BEST cinnamon rolls I've ever had in my life ... I still dream about them. Lol
google avatar

Yelp
I went here yesterday because I was craving a chocolate croissant all day but ended up buying two more pastries because everything looked good. I got the chocolate croissant, the churro croissant, and this small tub of cake something? I forgot what it was called but it had chocolate cake, Oreos, and chocolate mousse. Everything tasted great, the cafe looked really cool and had a bunch of seating options. The cashier was super friendly and helpful when we were making our selections.

Yelp
After getting burgers at Tanners my husband and I went Blacketmarket to get a little sweet treat. We normally frequent the North Park location but was really excited that there was one in South Oceanside. They were closing up but still so friendly, we ended up getting a cookie and their gluten free brownie, all little treats for my husband the birthday boy. This is probably the largest Blackmarket that I've ever been too, so roomy and spacious, I really wish I bought the alien sugar cookie because it was so cute. Even though the brownie was technically for my husband I ate a good portion of it, it was so decadent and chocolatety and gooey and the fresh fruit on top was a great contrast to the richness of the coca. Check them out if you're want a fun little treat there are so many little knicknakes you can get too!

Yelp
This spot was close to HomeState and my girlfriend felt like an iced coffee to enjoy for the remainder of the drive home. I got one of their butter croissants and it was fluffy and perfect. I would love to come back and try more of their stuff and take home bread to make things with later on. I hope this place continues to thrive on.

Yelp
The bakery was so cute. We were next door getting a burger and decided we wanted dessert. The Service was excellent and fast. The gentleman gave a few recommendations and suggested we warm the pastries up when we got home and that they would taste so much better warm . Let me tell you they were amazing and I can't wait to go back

Lisa H.

Yelp
I had to search many bakeries to find one with cinnamon rolls, so we chose black market. They didn't have them, but the awesome baker, Jericho, said he had used the same ingredients to make some monkey bread to replace it. It did not disappoint! Perfectly gooey caramel, just the right texture of dough...so delicious! The chocolate hazelnut twist was my personal favorite! The croissant dough was held the perfect crunch outside and tenderness inside which accompanied the perfect filling. I keep saying perfect because they were! So worth the drive! And the service was fast and friendly!

Yelp
Blackmarket Bakery is one of my favorites, but this was my first time visiting in Oceanside. Thankfully, they are consistent and they had the same great options and service as the other locations I most commonly frequent in San Diego. I ordered an iced matcha latter with almond syrup. They make all of their syrups in house and I can't pass up an opportunity to go with almond syrup. The combo is surprisingly good. I normally do it with lavender but they didn't have one, but the almond was perfection! At 11am on a Sunday, they were a little low on pastries. I'm not sure if it's because they had sold out or if they were low in production (their was a sign saying that they were working with a skeleton crew). Either way, the folks were super friendly and it was a solid visit.

Yelp
It's hard to have a bad experience with a bakery but this place is great. Delectable desserts, breads, pastries and coffee, what's not to love. The experience is "elevated" and a little fancy in the best way possible. The shop is clean and sleek and welcoming. Will be back again.
google avatar

Mandy S.

Yelp
Cute vibes! Selection wasn't huge on a Saturday morning at 9 AM, but we got the cinnamon roll and the berry pop tart. The cinnamon roll heated up was so good! Wish we would have gotten the pop tart heated up, too! Service was nothing special.

Yelp
12 out of 10 - everything was perfect. I am so excited that Blackmarket Bakery is finally open in North County!! We've been long going to the Costa Mesa and North Park locations and knew this location would be amazing and it certainly didn't disappoint! We went opening day and 10/10 on ambiance and environment - it was so cute and there was ample seating indoor and outdoor. Loved all of the little details like the curved coffee bar, toaster display stands and ample seating w/ plugs. The staff were absolutely wonderful and everyone was bustling at 8:00 am with fresh bread, cookies and items already out on display with more coming out while we were in line (which was dangerous as we kept adding to our list). I got the fresh Dutch Crunch bread loaf, Berry Poppins, Brioche Cinnamon Roll, a sugar cookie, a gingerbread cookie, an oat milk latte and a 70% chocolate bar. Every item was incredible. Everything was tasty, fresh and shockingly well priced. My husband and I have already agreed to get our fresh bread here weekly because it was absolutely delicious. The Berry Poppins was like the best homemade pop tart you've ever had, the brioche cinnamon roll was so tasty and sweet but not too sweet. And the latte was perfect - not bitter or too acidic, just perfect. Also LOVE the heat sleeve on the coffee - we got a good laugh out of it. Truly 12/10

Yelp
Blackmarket bakery is finally open and is fantastic!! We went to the soft opening and couldn't wait as we are huge fans of their other locations. First off, the space is great. Excellent location and very cute inside. Cozy seating areas inside and plenty of outdoor seating as well. The displays are well done. Love that you can see inside the baking area to see behind the scenes The pastries are to die for! Every single one was delicious. It's very hard to decide because they are all as good as they look. Favorites so far- chocolate hazelnut croissant, berry pop tart, raspberry chocolate scone and brioche cinnamon roll. I will make my way through all of them eventually. The bread is also excellent. Got a loaf of Dutch crunch and had it sliced. I will probably only buy that as my primary bread from now on. It's not a sweet bread, as you may think initially from name. It's a sourdough type bread with a crispy crackle top. The menu for breakfast and lunch look great. We didn't try but saw the egg sandwiches going out and wished we had room for them. Will definitely be trying those in the next visit. The owners are wonderful and the staff was so sweet and helpful. Complete neighborhood gem. Highly recommend!

Yelp
REALLY cute bakery in the Freeman Collective. Lots of small cafe tables to enjoy a coffee and a pastry, and the entire bakery is really cute overall. Good luck trying to go home with just one thing!

Yelp
2nd visit for great coffee and stayed for delicious sandwiches with my wife! Jericho was very friendly and helpful! Had to knock out some schoolwork so we stayed awhile! Indoor/outdoor seating was plenty.

Yelp
Came in to the Blackmarket bakery for a little breakfast today. Got the Farmhouse sandwich. Egg, cheese, ham, bacon on a brioche bun. The sandwich was served fresh, crispy bacon, ham just the right amount of salt and smoke, fluffy eggs and tasty cheese. The bun was soft and fresh and delicious. Coffee is really good, strong enough without tasking bitter. The shop is really clean, the staff very friendly, it smells really good when you walk in the door and doesn't disappoint. Will try some bakery items next time...and there will be a next time for sure. Have a great day..

Augustine P.

Yelp
3 sandwiches, no one else inside, 35 minutes. What a joke. Not coming back. Shouldn't have done that pre-tip at payment, what did I get for it besides a half hour of waiting.
google avatar

Sommer C.

Yelp
Amazing desserts just wish it was more vegan friendly. I was introduced to this place through the too good 2 go app. The staff is friendly
google avatar

Bertha V.

Yelp
Came here after having had lunch next door and decided to get something sweet so we stopped here. We had already had coffee so we decided on just getting some pastries. We decided on a hazelnut and chocolate twist and pecan cinnamon roll. What was even better is that's we came at their happy hour time so the pastries were half off. You can't beat that. The girl behind the counter was very helpful answering our questions in regard to what the pastries were. The place was nice and clean with lots of sitting space. We loved both of the pastries that we selected. They would have even been better with a coffee , maybe next time.
google avatar

Gloria T.

Yelp
I stumbled into Blackmarket after brunch one Sunday for the first time. I ordered a Dirty Chai with Oatmailk and Cinnamon on top and I have been hooked ever since. Their chai is a syrup that they make in house and it is vegan friendly. They don't have a ton of vegan options but they have them nonetheless. Two of my favorite baked goods are the banana muffin and the cookie with sprinkles. SO GOOD! They also bake and sell different types of pastries and breads. We often get the plain sourdough the rosemary sourdough. Both light and super flavorful! They do mark what is vegan and that is very much appreciated. They have a good amount of seats open to hang out or work, like I sometimes do and it's off to the side so you don't hear a lot of chatter by the register. The staff is so nice especially the owner? Mgr? An absolute gem. I love good personable customer service!

Cheryl M.

Yelp
Amazing food! Great people! Super helpful they were able to fix up a cake for me that that had just baked and even personalized it! It was an emergency for me! They were very helpful!
google avatar

Wendy M.

Yelp
Nice and cool inside. Friendly staff. Food is amazing, coffee delicious, and pastries are expertly house made. So delicious!
google avatar

Charlotte B.

Yelp
I got the uncle tiger sandwich and my friend got the ranch hand. Both so good! the sauce they used in both sandwhiches has a sweet flavor. I was tempted to buy some of their sweets but resisted. Staff was very kind, you get your number and choose a seat inside or outside, cafe style. They have multiple cafe drink options. Next time I will be grabbing something sweet to try!
google avatar

Sharon J.

Yelp
Amazing pastries and delicious bread! Can be busy at times, but line moves quickly. Lovely little shop.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
From out of town, ordered for special occasion and disappointed with the cake we ordered. Very very dry. Not worth the money spent. Got double charged as well. Gave credit card over the phone and then when picked up was told not charged and paid for it again.

America V.

Yelp
One word... WOW. From the service to the pastries and the coffee. Just wow. The flavors are so well combined. I had the seasonal brownie cheesecake with raspberry cream, so so good. Along with a honey latte that went great with my pastry. My new favorite bakery. Keep up the good work ladies! Oh yes and the shop its self is such a chill spot to hang out.i could sit here and work for hours!
google avatar

RN R.

Yelp
Cinnamon Roll: 8.5/10 really amazing warmed up. Not too sweet, not dry. Chai: 7/10 sweet and spicy but more sweet overall - wish it was a little stronger, kinda felt like drinking iced milk Cold brew: 6/10 tasted on the weaker side Service: we came twice during our trip. the afternoon service was great. the morning service was odd, felt like maybe it was the barista's first day. We ordered coffee and then she went to the back and talked with her co-worker for a while. after that she started on our food and then finally got to our coffee. I would have preferred to have my drink right away and wait for the food. just made the wait feel longer. my friend ordered a double shot over ice. She brought on shot in a paper cup and a second paper cup half full of ice - another reason I am thinking maybe she was new. Just never had that happen before. Of course all the ice melted right when she poured the shot over so she had to go ask for more ice in a bigger cup. anywho, knit picky. good baked stuff and mediocre drinks. worth it for the food but if you aren't getting food i'd go somewhere else for coffee.

Josie A.

Yelp
First off...the location is great...the food is AMAZING...and it has really good drinks (especially the hot chocolate). The churro and double baked almond croissants were both really good too. They had fast service and everybody was super friendly. The best part is that it was dog friendly, both inside and outside!
google avatar

Linda P.

Yelp
This is a spacious and welcoming establishment. The pastries all look fantastic. We got Pain Suisse which is a croissant with pastry cream and chocolate, and a toothsome chocolate hazelnut twist. The coffee is roasted by Vigilante. The staff is patient, helpful and knowledgeable. We will be back for lunch because the Figaro and the Ranch Hand sound great.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Coffee is great. Also tea options. Scones are super. This last time around we had the breakfast items both were great the hash browns in any sandwich are good especially the breakfast burrito. Vegetarian options great. Yo so rizo was tasty too. Quality bread. Good ambiance. Nice people go to morning spot
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
This has become one of my favorite local spots. The coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches are so delicious and there's a good amount of seating inside and outside. Everyone is super friendly and there's fun beautifully decorated cookies, chocolates, and gifts. We love walking grabbing our coffee and around the neighborhood. It's a fun and yummy family outing.
google avatar

Kallan C.

Yelp
Delicious bread for a reasonable price! The seeded sourdough has been our favorite. They also have a great selection of coffees and pastries. The danishes are served warmed and are very flakey. Can't wait to try more of their offerings! Patio and indoor seating. Very cozy and a great place to spend some time. Helpful staff.

Christine S.

Yelp
Friendly service, especially from the manager. I had a sandwich and the bread was freshly baked, light and delicious. Did not try the pastries but they looked good. It took a while to get our drinks and the coffee was a bit acrid.
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
I had really loved this place, the service, their food, treats and coffee. But this review is for their bakery, and that's in their name even, so- my husband ordered me a birthday cake from there earlier this month. It was so dry. It crumbled to bits as we cut it. And then it didn't taste good. And the buttercream frosting was not that great. We even put it on the counter for as long as they said to before serving. It was a huge disappointment at my party. For that kind of money I'd expect something amazing, but we didn't even get something good. Maybe it was just an off day, but I'm still bummed about it so I had to post here.
google avatar

Abby G.

Yelp
I just want to say, you all need to try their home made "pop tart" it's fantastic! It's tucked in off coast hwy in Oceanside.

Yelp
Great baked goods that are different from other shops. Wonderful bread. Friendly staff. Inside and outside seating.

Yelp
The place had a couple of people in it. I was looking at the menu on one of the tables. It wasn`t very different at all. Usual junk like breakfast burrito. I was going to get a Latte & a cake. (Hardly any cakes). About 4 people in the background absorbed in whatever it was they were doing. Someone said "I`ll be with you in a minute". That minute turned into 3. I walked out.

Katie M.

Yelp
We discovered Blackmarket Bakery earlier this year and it's quickly become our favorite place for coffee and sweets. Staff is always super friendly and welcoming. It's such a treat showing up in the morning and getting baked goods fresh to go along with a fresh cup of coffee. Easily my favorite and preferred place to get a latte too. Most places either put too much milk or they're extremely watered down coffee. Not this place, lattes here always have the perfect amount of coffee ratio balance in the drink and the coffee tastes rich. Highly recommend stopping by here!
