How to Spend a 24-Hour Staycation in Cambridge, Maryland | Eater DC

"I found Blackwater Adventures in an old cannery building next to the park; they rent single and tandem kayaks and bicycles, offer guided tours and moonlight paddles, and — at their Hyatt Regency site — also rent jet skis, catamarans, paddle boats, powerboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards." - Claudia Rosenbaum

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 We had an absolutely amazing time on the Upper Cheat River thanks to Blackwater Outdoor Adventures! My husband, our pup Chunk, and I brought our own kayaks and used their super convenient shuttle service for the 11-mile paddle. Booking was quick and easy, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. Our driver Sam was awesome—he gave us great tips about the river and even pointed us toward some local music festivals and fun happenings in the area. The paddle itself was beautiful and peaceful, with just a few shallow spots that were still easy to navigate. We even got lucky and spotted two stunning bald eagles along the way! The scenery was unbeatable, and the calm current made for a perfect day on the water. Chunk loved every minute of it too (especially the beach breaks)! Highly recommend Blackwater Outdoor Adventures whether you’re bringing your own gear or renting—this was one of our favorite paddles of the summer. (Photos attached to share just how magical it really was 🛶🐾🦅)

Had a good time. Water levels were low which was explained to us as the staff helped us choose the best trip. Our group did a mix of tubing and kayaking. Tubers had to walk a little toward the end - water was slow moving near the exit. Would definitely go back.

Google
Blackwater Outdoor Adventures was super easy to book online, and sign waivers. Once we showed up we were told water was low and we couldn’t do the 11 mile kayak trip- we were able to still do the 4 mile trip. It was still fun, and beyond their control- we will definitely come back in the spring when the water is plentiful and the rapids are bigger! Still a good trip, and Jared was super friendly & gave is insight on other fun things to do in the area

I used BOA's shuttle service to get my own kayak on the water, and they were helpful and friendly and put me at ease.

Google
I'll be honest... This place had me a little worried when I pulled in. It is definitely runny salt of the earth folks and they are run a great business. They know the water and give great details to help you enjoy what you are doing. We did a 4 mile float on the Cheat River in Kayak and Canoe.... We had a blast despite the seasonally low water table. We watched bass and suckers, hawks and Kingfishers, insects and terrestrials, and the beautiful bronze water was so refreshingly cool. I highly recommend. Just ask questions and be honest about what you want out of it. I will be going again. Family of 5 all gave 5 stars!! Even the older teenagers that hate everything 🤣

We had a wonderful experience with a duckie float trip with Blackwater last weekend. All of the guides and staff were extremely kind and professional, and they put us at ease on the river. Lunch was delicious and included a great variety of different foods. If we are ever down in the West Virginia area we would hands down use BOA again!

Google
Great experience. We had low water levels (later in the season) and had a terrific time using the duck boats! Lunch was a great spread of sandwiches, fruits, salads, and dessert. A great outfitter!

Yelp
What a great experience! This is a great opportunity to float or kayak the Cheat. We chose to tube... very relaxing! They provide tubes and life jackets, and drive you to the drop off location, and you float down the river until you get back to where you started! This is a great opportunity for family fun or team building, and is good for wide range of ages. There's a cute campsite nearby with really affordable overnight rates if you want to make a weekend of it!

Yelp
Great time floating the Cheat, even if we did it during a tornado watch! The guys kayaked upstream and helped pull us through the worst part of the storm. We floated the rest of the way back. Life long memories were made!

Yelp
Great short rapids trip with knowledgeable guides and a high safety standard. Fun thing to do if you are in the area--highly recommend!

Yelp
We had such a great time on our white water rafting trip that we came back and did a tubing trip shortly afterwards. My only complaint, which isn't the fault of the company, is the massive amount of gnats at the location. The guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and made the trip enjoyable. The photos they took were great and worth the money. I do wish I had brought my own phone ins waterproof case for pictures at certain spots that they didn't capture. (Eg - Jumping off rocks)

Yelp
I love honesty. These guys encouraged me to go from the 11 mile trip to the 4 mile canoe trip based on the water level. It was a perfect trip with lots of swimming and fishing with my 5 year old. Will definitely return.

Yelp
My cousin and I took the Express rafting trip (2 hours on the water) and had such a great time! Sam was our guide and he was a lot of fun and told us about a lot of the history on the way to the launch site and once we were on the water. I can't wait until I can take my husband and kids here on another trip!

Yelp
Incredibly knowledgeable staff who were very accommodating of our large group. I coordinated a trip for 25 people. There were rave reviews from every participants. BOA makes it easy with a single (very affordable) price that includes rafting, 2 spots to jump off rocks, and a picnic lunch on the banks. We took a route of class 2 and 3 rapids that were great for beginners. They also showed us some "tricks" which made it a great trip for those with a bit more experience. They offer 100+ professional photos for a flat rate of $30. Definitely worth it for large groups. Highly recommend for any large group, individual, beginners and more experienced!

Yelp
We had a great time on the river. I messed up our reservation time, twice, and staff were so gracious and accommodating. The kayaks were in great condition. We loved West Virginia!

Yelp
The staff are personable and very knowledgable. Safety is number one, and fun is a close second. Declan is a particularly excellent guide! He was eager to share info about other local attractions as well. Wear wet shoes or sneakers. Flip flops are no good because they can get lost easily in the water. Also, cotton clothes will bog you down. We felt comfortable in bathing suits and underarmour-style attire. The guides do appreciate gratuity. Standard is approximately $20 per boat. Thanks for making our trip an adventure!

Yelp
Kind, helpful, great location, family-friendly. We had a great little ride, and since it rained, they were flexible and accommodating. And I have to give a shoutout to the nice bathroom and changing facilities! I would recommend BOA to everyone!!

Yelp
Had an amazing time white water rafting! There were 8 of us so we had to be split up but it was so much fun. We stayed with the rest of our group and our guide, Frank, did an amazing job! We will be talking about this for a while!

Yelp
A must do trip! We did a two day self guided kayak trip on the Cheat River. BOA rented us kayaks and provided us with detailed information about the river and where to camp, and even gave us free bottles of water. We put in at their shop, and enjoyed a 9 mile gentle float down the beautiful river. Solitude and wildlife were abundant. Best of all, we felt completely prepared by BOA despite it being our first kayaking trip in a few years. In the early evening we arrived at the Seven Islands, which is a chain of small, campable islands. You simply pick an island, which you will likely have to yourself for the night. The next day, we paddled 10 more miles to Riveview Lounge, where BOA was waiting for us to load up our kayaks and shuttle us back to our car. We were particularly impressed with their COVID-19 protocol; they sanitized every boat prior to use, they provided disposable masks to us, and their storefront was completely no-contact. Overall, this was an amazing trip through a gorgeous section of the Cheat River, and BOA made it all possible. We highly recommend doing a two day trip so you can camp on the Seven Islands, for more info check out the Cheat River Water Trail: https://cheatriverwatertrail.org

Yelp
Staff was friendly and helpful. Gift shop had plenty of BOA merchandise ( T-shirts, stickers , etc). We brought our own kayaks and they drove them up river for us with another large group people that rented kayaks , tubes and canoes. Prices are reasonable. Site offers camping on river.

Erica D.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, great location, prices, and services. We took our family with 4 kids (all 8 and under) and we had a blast! Highly recommend this company. The canoes, paddles and extra seats were quality! We brought our own life jackets but they provided those as well. The bathrooms are clean and well kept, which is a bonus!

Billy W.

Yelp
SO laid back. SO easy. SO beautiful out there. Staff was there when we needed them, but left us alone to do our thing...and we did. And it was wonderful.

Jodi C.

Yelp
We've been doing canoe trips with BOA for years! They are amazing, allow us to safely have fun and are so unbelievably accommodating to our large group!!

Yelp
We went whitewater rafting this past Saturday, and we had a fantastic time. Our guide Brian was awesome, the section of river we rafted had lots of great rapids, and even the lunch they provided was delicious (especially the brownies). I would definitely recommend them if you are in the area and interested in whitewater rafting.

Rachel O.

Yelp
My husband and I did a white-water rafting adventure with this company, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The guides were very safety conscious, but also wanted to make sure everyone had fun. The weather didn't start out looking very promising -- we got rained upon right before stopping for lunch, but then things cleared up and the rest of the tour was sunny. The bus driver took pictures of us as we went over rapids, of which there were nine. The rapids were class II and III, and the water level in the river was very high due to rains the night before. Very fun. We would do another activity with this group in the future.

Sabrina B.

Yelp
Went whitewater rafting with Case as our guide - was fantastic. Everyone had fun!

John C.

Yelp
Wow. These people are just plain awesome. Great guides, great river experience. HIGHLY recommended. Oh and if you get the chance, choose to ride in the duckies. They're a blast.
