18 Restaurants Worth a Drive Out of Nashville - Eater Nashville

"Folks flock to the Texas-style BBQ food trailer in Martin, TN for oak-smoked meats aplenty, alongside daily specials (like Chick-fil-A Polynesian-glazed smoked ham), vinegar slaw, baked beans, and homemade desserts." - Delia Jo Ramsey

It was over an hour before we got our food. The menu was overpriced — $15 for just a burger, with no sides included. Fries were an extra $4, and they turned out to be bagged fries with a sprinkle of parsley on top. We also tried the nachos, which were supposed to have pulled pork, but the meat tasted more like boiled chicken. All the food was lukewarm and good luck getting a refill on your drink. Definitely very disappointed with the overall experience.

It’s a drive but is definitely worth it. This is only my second visit here but I’m down for a 3rd, 4th etc. First of all such a beautiful and unique building. The history and the original interior still there which I didn’t take pictures of but hey, means you should go lol. Then the food. Blakes probably has the most affordable sampler bbq platter especially with the quality of food you get. Freaking $28 for brisket, pulled pork, turkey, pork ribs, sausage link, choice of two sides, jalapeno cornbread. That is a steal!!!! (Bologna in pic I got additional a la carte 🤤)The brisket is very black pepper forward. (Not Zavala’s level black pepper) Last time a year ago I thought I might be just the slice I got but 2/2 times and both home runs in my book. Turkey is wonderfully moist and smoky. The ribs bit perfectly and I love the sauce in the house sauce with it. The corn bread had this cake like moisture and texture that balanced the bits of jalapeño. Oh I’m also a sucker for what I think is a sour cream based potato salad. Helps keep the fork moving with all these fatty meats. THE BEST PIMENTO CHEESE with garlic seasoned crackers. The cheddar with the pimento peppers and whatever else magic is in there. I could eat a whole charcuterie board of this stuff. And I’m only here for the barbecue. Seeing and smelling the other food on the menu being served and taken to other tables made me drool. When people talk about hidden gems off the beaten path Blake’s at Southern Milling is the definition.

This is the second time we have tried this place and will not be back. We called and made reservations but once we got there we had to wait a while. Once we set at the table and she took our drink order and what we wanted to eat. It took OVER HOUR to get our food. Other people were getting their food that came in after us. Once we got our food it was lukewarm and way over priced for the amount and quality of the food. I ordered bbq nachos and the chips was GREASY, the bbq tasted like boiled chicken and not bbq. When I questioned the waiter she was like no, we don’t shred of chicken. But I am telling you it tasted like chicken. My friend even tried it and agreed. The portion was small and it was $15. I am sorry but it doesn’t cost that much to make it. My friend order a burger and fries. The fries was all but a frozen bag, deep fried and parsley on top for $4. The burger was $15 and it was small and VERY SWEET. OH and good luck getting your drink refilled or even checked on while eating your food. Over all it was too long of a wait to get some over priced food!! Oh and when paying cash at the register the waiter asked if I wanted my change. Ummm…yes!! Yes I want my change back! Don’t go there!!

This place has an awesome building and a crazy amount of room. We were told our wait would be 15 minutes, was maybe a minute. Our server was very friendly and started out attentive. We came toward the end of the evening and we're told up front of 2 or 3 items that had ran out earlier, which was fine. Once we ordered, it seemed like our food took a bit longer than it should ti come out, and when it did, it was luke warm at best. Felt like it had sat, waiting to be picked up for a few minutes. At first when our meals were brought out, I was brought the wrong order. This was corrected in a couple minutes, but my order was missing an item, which I was only told about after asking, that it (sausage link) had also ran out, so extra of another item had been substituted, without my knowledge. We had the fried pickles, which were amazing! The BBQ sampler plate, which tasted fine, but on the cold side, and didn't gave a sample of everything. And the Bubba Cole, which my wife says was very good, but on the cold side as well. When we were done, we could not get our waitress because she was engaged in an animated conversation for about 15 minutes. In all, we are more disappointed with our service and communication about the food availability than the temperature of the food. The bubba cole tasted great, just a little cold. The fried pickles are different and a must. The mac n cheese, fried Brussels and baked beans were also very good.

I had a wonderful time at this place. It was beautiful and I plan to take my family to eat there. And Danielle was a delight!! Very nice and friendly. She was superb.

Google
The food was absolutely fantastic! The bbq, ribs, smoked turkey, brisket, and cornbread were moist and cooked perfectly. The deviled eggs were awesome. The fried pickles are actually sweet pickles, so that was a bit of a shock, but they had a great taste if you enjoy sweet pickles. The building is beautiful and the staff were very friendly. I can not say enough about the cleanliness of the building and bathroom. That is always a big deal for me personally, and I was beyond impressed with it. I'd consider it slightly pricey but not bad, especially if you consider the quality of the food and everything you get. It's definitely worth eating at in my book.

Google
I have eaten here probably a handful of times including when they first opened. On our first trip, I loved the food even though the portions were small for the price. I got the smoked turkey sandwich. I liked it so much I get it every time I go back and every time the quality of the sandwich is worse than the time before! Always dry and lacks flavor, nothing like the first time. The sides are the highest price with the smallest portions I have ever seen. Service is also lacking, on one visit I waited over 30 minutes for a to go order that should have been ready when I arrived. Somehow it took an hour to get 1 turkey sandwich ready. Do not recommend.

Google
This place is simply stunning. Location and building is absolutely amazing, plenty of parking and easy to find. The building itself is a remodelled mill and they have done an exceptional job. So great to have a view of the BBQ pits as you walked up to the building, let's you know immediately this place is legit. The staff were all super friendly and welcoming of our party. So many great BBQ dishes on offer and it was hard not to buy everything available, but we ordered a lot and enjoyed everything. Special notes on the brisket which was 100, also the Nashville hot chicken sandwich was super tasty. Loads of options to keep everyone happy including the burger for our younger guest. Cornbread was a welcome side to see on the menu, the pimento and crackers was delicious and try all the sauces too. Then all the puddings we ordered were just as good too. Got to go out back and see the BBQ's in action and the team doing what they do best out there. The bar area looked great too but we ate in the main restaurant. Just wish I lived closer to visit more often. But definitely consider stopping in if you are passing, we took a big detour to visit and were so glad we did.

Yelp
We loved this place for some good BBQ with lots of great choices. The brisket was outstanding. The loaded sweet potato and Mac and Cheese were exceptional also. We stumbled in by accident while on a trip but we will definitely be back! We were waited on very quickly even though the restaurant was busy and our food came quickly. A very nice visit.

Yelp
Very good BBQ, Along with a Shiner Bock, as good as it gets! Throw in good service, all you can ask for.

Yelp
Super Friendly! But super Slow service. Bar tenders very 'la-ti-da' behind the counter. Drinks take forever to get. The food, however, is not only delicious, it is very unexpected and different for the are! Same goes for the fantastic ambiance, decor, and overall design of the whole restaurant and bar! I ordered the Smoked Cheese Dip appetizer with the seasoned crackers and for an entree the Run of the Mill (sampler platter) which came with smoked turkey slices, 1/2 link of jalapeño cheddar sausage, pulled pork, 2 slices of brisket, a fall-off-the-bone tender pork rib, fried Brussel sprouts, Mac & Cheese, and jalapeño cornbread. The Run of the Mill ran me about $26 (as of Mar '23), and is MORE than enough food for a second meal. I couldn't have sat there and ate all that if I'd wanted to after a beer or two and a large appetizer. The cheese dip appetizer is fantastic and very different, but those dang seasoned crackers are epic. You can add take-home packages of them bad boys for only $1/ea. and if you don't get some to carry with you, you're officially certifiable. Too good and wish I had more! Overall, great experience and food, just go when you have some time to kill and don't expect it to be super quick. We just hung out and enjoyed grazing and were fine, especially as the servers were so nice. Well done, Blake's!

Yelp
The BEST! First walked in and was impressed with the building and the atmosphere there. Next I was greeted by the NICEST and most attentive waitress I've had anywhere. I was dining by myself and they made me feel so welcome and at home. The food was exceptional. Wish I lived nearby so that I could visit again. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Unreal...just crazy good. I was traveling through for work and this place was recommended by a local friend. I started with the garlic wings which were simply on point, Just wonderful. I then moved on to the brisket plate with slaw and Brussels sprouts. The brisket had a nice bark with Smokey rich flavor and the sides were just as good. The vinegar based slaw was perfect. I sat in the bar area and was taken wonderful care of. The outside is clean and you see the smokers when walking up. They're prominently featured as they should be at a great bbq joint. This place is worth the drive from wherever your reading this from. Seriously, get in the car and head this way!

Yelp
Some of the best BBQ I've had in a while! The Mac and cheese was great! The Brussel Sprouts were great! The baked beans were good! I had the sampler just so I could try everything and all of the BBQ was great! And they have one of my favorite beer Shiner Bock!

Yelp
Best food in Martin, TN! Rib plate was delicious and filling! Sides of deviled eggs and Mac & cheese were A+.

Yelp
We are from out of town and family brought us here. They had told us about the smoked cream cheese, and we tried to replicate it before we came here, but now realize we're nowhere close to replicating it. Our only complaint is that they are closed the rest of the time that we are visiting! The smoked cream cheese is amazing. The seasoned crackers are fantastic. My husband said the brisket was the best he's ever had. I had the smoked Turkey and it was moist and amazing. My son, who rarely eats meats, ate 2.5 pieces of mine. The chicken strips are to die for. Oh, and the desserts! There were six of us, and we tried the New York cheesecake, chocolate cake, lemon icebox pie and turtle brownie. We shared and all had different favorites. There wasn't a bad dessert in the batch. The waitress was super sweet too! She was great. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
So delicious! Our server was very attentive and kept my water glass full. The owner asked if I enjoyed my meal and I felt very welcome. The area is clean and welcoming. Thank you!

Yelp
Blake's is the best. Every time I drive from Nashville to our farm in Rives, I have to have my Blake's fix. He smokes the best brisket ever! I mixed it up the other night and ordered the nachos with brisket. I was a little disappointed with the lack of brisket and too many jalapeños and pickled onions. I will stick with the plates and sandwiches from here on. Don't pass on his smoked cream cheese nor his fantastic pimento cheese.

Joy H.

Yelp
A gem ... ! For a town the size of Martin, we didn't expect to find such an exceptional restaurant. The BBQ is on point. The dry-rubbed wings are out of this world. The sides - crispy Brussels sprouts? Count me in. Salads? Nailed it. Service matches the quality of the food. And the space and ambience round it all out. Do yourself a favor and stop in. Again and again.

Yelp
Atmospher is casual and not terribly loud despite the open concept and brick walls. The food was excellent. I got the Number 109 with added brisket. Delightful meal.

Yelp
Just good BBQ. Nice atmosphere and great service. Everything is delicious especially the Brussels

Yelp
If you are a momma whose baby just started college and you are worried that they are not eating enough, take them to Blake's at Southern Milling. That'll fix them. I ate here with my freshly sent to college son, his girlfriend, and her roommate. We started with the smoked cream cheese. We all loved it. They all ordered the pulled pork sandwich with Mac and cheese. I had the pulled pork plate with slaw and fried Brussel sprouts. The sauce on the BBQ was some of the best I have ever had. They raved about the Mac and cheese. We all cleaned our plates. Every bite was delicious. As a treat, they took home dessert for later. I skipped dessert, but I will get it next time. Take your Skyhawks to Blake's. You will love it, and they will too.

Yelp
Not the first time I've enjoyed BBQ from Blake, just the first time in his new digs Blake's At Southern Milling. The renovations done here are incredible and the décor is impressive, LOVED the etched glass behind the bar and the upstairs is beautiful. Sat at the bar and Avery took excellent care of me, got me something to drink, and put in my order for the Run of the Mill platter. Everything...and I mean everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. Blake's Texas training pedigree for smoking meats is evident in what he serves. The brisket has a nice pepper to the bark and great smoke, the pulled pork is moist and tender without being mushy, the medallions of smoked turkey are at that perfect point of moist but firm, and the ribs just fall off the bone. They crumble the seasoned crackers onto the Mac & Cheese...excellent use of existing and new, and of course the pimento cheese is the bomb!!! I did try the Lemon Blueberry Cobbler with Honey Lemon sauce and it was gone after the first bite...no pictures available...LOL I love desserts that have great flavor but are not overly sweet and this was a great balance between the two. Congratulations Blake on your new place...impressive!!!

Yelp
I ate here the service was nice, a little crowded. The food was amazing as always . Just a little too crowded

Yelp
Tried out a spot about an hour from home and was not at all disappointed. The loaded bbq chips were not all that good to me but I would've probably enjoyed it more with fries and less toppings that were more focused on the BBQ and sauce which were delicious. I also got the sampler platter to try it all out. The BBQ was fantastic and what I would get next time. The brisket was pretty good as well. The cornbread was excellent along with the pimento cheese. I thought the crackers were over seasoned by a lot but they were good. The Mac and cheese was good but it really did not need the crackers in it at all. It would've been so much better without all the extra salt. The smoked sausage was a hit. The turkey had good taste but mine was a little dry that day and the ribs were just not my style at all and would be the last thing I ever ordered again. I was not a fan at all of the white bbq sauce but the mild was good and paired well with the meats. My girlfriend got the turkey and although she thought it was a little dry the sauce helped out a lot and she really enjoyed it. We both thought the Mac n cheese had so much potential but just way too salty. She also got a cookie that left her really happy as we left. Such a awesome building and environment and was a great date spot for us. I would definitely recommend to my friends and others reading this.

Yelp
Had the brisket and it was so tasty and tender. The sides and sauce were also great. Not too many offers in Martin and this one was probably best place from how it looked to the food. Can selection was ok but I was so disappointed in the tap selection. Consisted of shiner, Sam admas, blue moon, and laganitas. Whoever is picking the beers for the tap should be fired. Not a single local beer? Anyway, that is my biggest knock. Bourbon selection was good and the staff was very pleasant.

Yelp
Absolutely the best BBQ I've had. I travel a fair amount and try to go to places and eat the "local"/regional fare. Tennessee is known for BBQ and this place killed it! Did the sampler platter and every sample was impressive. Tender, juicy, and meaty. The smoke was just right (this guy has some serious skills) , the portions great, and the flavor fantastic. Seriously would make this a destination dining experience. I went during the noon hour which was slow but well worth it. Service needs work (very nice, but not attentive). That said, I ate at the bar and the girl working was involved in other work duties. Would have been a little better if customers were the #1 priority regardless of what else needs to be done. Thankfully, the food made up for it and trumps all else. Highly recommend, especially for smoke hounds like me. Will be back.

Millie C.

Yelp
I love the BBQ, the crackers, the pimento cheese, the pickles...so good!! I have been very disappointed in the smoked sausage and the desserts though!

Michele B.

Yelp
Amazing BBQ!! No wait even on busy days!! Fantastic Service!. We had Grace and she was so friendly and helped us get to know the city. The dessert was amazing as well. I highly recommend this restaurant l!

Jeff J.

Yelp
awesome place. great food, i had the run of the mill sampler platter and it was all good. The brisket will melt in your mouth

Yelp
My husband and I went in to try the new restaurant in town. We expected it to be good, but it exceeded our expectations. Everything we have tried on this menu is good. This is not your typical barbecue joint. The food is exceptional. It's well seasoned, the flavors are unique and well balanced. The restaurant is beautiful and we always get good service. I'm so glad we have a restaurant like this in Martin TN. It makes me proud to live here.

Yelp
Looks like your average Southern Grain Mill, but when you walk in it is absolutely beautiful. The food is always good and the burgers are always flavorful and juicy. Any meat you will order falls off the bone and/or melts in your mouth. It's a great place to go and we would gladly drive 45 minutes to eat it.

Dave S.

Yelp
Food was fair. The building is really nice but if BBQ or Brisket is what you want I suggest other places. The chips and deviled eggs were good but the meats were just so so.

Joe P.

Yelp
Food and drinks are great but this place is on the high end of pricy. I tried talking to the bar manager about doing a happy hour special on drinks but she wasn't interested on doing that. I know I won't be back at $15 for a bloody Mary and another time I paid $31 For a bloody Mary and a smoked cheese snack.

Zachary S.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Our server Grace was phenomenal. 10/10 would absolutely go again.

Bubba N.

Yelp
nice looking place! no one at the door to greet? first time there. food was good just to spicy for our taste? needs some kind of food for barbecue lovers that don't want it hot before the sauce. the heat should be a choice.
