Blind

"This is one of those places where you don’t just come to eat, but where you’ll find quality ingredients, impressive flavours and solid technique as part of a gastronomic experience that touches the emotions. This is showcased in its homage to José Saramago’s novel “Blindness” and a philosophy built around three concepts (to feel, to touch and to provoke) that play with the senses. Part of the Torel Palace Hotel but with its own separate entrance, this restaurant is overseen by chef Vítor Matos and impressively run day to day by young chef Rita Magro. Here, the cuisine is based around a serious, common sense yet fun approach (some of the dishes are served “blind” to guests), with a desire to demonstrate a high level of cooking and to create an element of surprise in terms of technique, with presentation and flavour always to the fore. This is showcased on a single surprise tasting menu entitled Blind Emotions, with a choice of two different options (10 or 12 “moments”)." - Michelin Inspector

Had the 10 courses this evening at 155€/pax. The intro given by the service personnel about sensations and textures to come for the meal, raised my expectations. Overselling. There were more misses than hits. The amuses bouches failed to titillate; too much carbs involved, flavours fell short. Next dish of foie gras, saved the night and I thought there’s still hope…2 other mets were of fine dining standard; the « couscous »of snapper and shrimps and the pigeon with beets & rhubarb, cuisson of the fish and pigeon 👍. The experience of being blind folded and blind tasting? Ok some may appreciate it for its novelty, the test wasn’t hard especially if one has an educated palate. The challenging part was actually feeding yourself without staining your outfit with the blindfold on. Fast forward to desserts, sigh. Pre-dessert was ok, Actual dessert? A let down. Presentation alright, yoghurt ice cream, raspberries, meringue, lychee slivers. Lychee used came from a can. For FINE DINING and I was presented with canned food? WHY? Chef Stephane Costa did come to our table at the end of the meal. I appreciated that. However, there’s work to be done and returning client I will not be.

What a fun, delicious, and unique experience! It was a degustation menu and every course/experience was exceptional. From a one bite explosion of flavors in your mouth, to brushing your teeth with a lemon flavor toothpaste to clean your palette before the next course. Everything was fantastic. At one point, a blindfold was placed in front of us and we were asked to tie it around our eyes for the next course. A bowel was placed in front of us and we all tried to guess the ingredients of the dish. It was a balsamic reduction with a quail egg, potato purée, and mushrooms. All the dishes, fantastic, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The room we sat in, was filled with wine bottles behind glass cabinets, and there was a single long stem red rose hanging from the ceiling upside down. over the table.

What a fun, whimsical experience. Everything was fantastic. The service from all angles was beyond reproach. We enjoyed every minute of the creative and interactive meal. We felt well tended to without feeling any overbearing presence. The food itself was delicious and while we had favorites, we enjoyed everything immensely. A job done perfectly.

The restaurant visit was a wonderful and unique experience that I can recommend to everyone. My special thanks go to Yuri, who accompanied us throughout the evening. She is an incredibly pleasant and friendly person who handles her work with professionalism. When she told us that she is only 21 years old, I was surprised! Not because she looks old – she very much looks like a beautiful young lady – but because her demeanor is so mature and confident. I am very impressed by her and her skills, and I am certain that she is a great asset to this restaurant.

We has the larger 12 moment tasting menu with paired wines and overall the experience was a lot of fun. Everything was perfectly cooked and wines were interesting and different, matching the food well. The front of house service was excellent doing all the perfectly timed stuff you expect from a one star place, but also being relaxed and happy to chat about the food and in fact the city in general. Some things fell slightly short, but the service was so good that it pulled everything back up to 5* for us. The whole "blind" concept is wonderful, but its a very high bar to hit on every moment. We felt that later courses were less successful on hitting the theme, either because too much had been thrown at it, or the flavour profile was so subtle that it didn't hit the brief for us. However, it was all flawlessly cooked and was clearly what the chef had intended, our debate over each course was fun and added to the experience. As other reviewers have stated there has clearly been some challenges over getting the paired wines quantities sorted out. For us this has been corrected, measures were fine, however the last port cocktail was small and intended to cover 2 moments. When serving Wagner, the sommelier, explained this and said he would make more if we required it. I finished mine in the first moment, be he never re-appeared. I'm sure the serving staff would have gone and found him had I asked, but if you know the measure is light you should check without needing called. Anyway, this is minor in the scheme of things, we had a very entertaining evening filled with nice touches and great food.

The food was stunning. Every single experience was very uniqie and excellently prepared. The blondfolded experience topped it all. Very well done.

Google
A fun dinner experience with pretty good dishes. I am only giving 4 stars for the food because it was to much seafood, one of the meat dishes had chicken, a bit disappointed, but the rest was overall good. We felt that we could skip the burger and fries as well. Their blind experience was pretty fun and different. The service was pretty good, but we felt the dinner was a bit on the long side. I would recommend if you want a romantic dinner with a different take on the tasting menu.

Given the restaurant’s stellar reputation and premium pricing, I had high hopes for our visit. We made a reservation for a Saturday in August several months in advance, even planning our trip to Oporto around it. A sizable deposit was required at booking, and we opted for the 12-course tasting menu with wine pairing. Our experience began pleasantly. We arrived early and were warmly greeted by Pedro, who took our cocktail order. The signature cocktails were enjoyable, though the “Blindness” cocktail was overly dominated by lemon juice, which masked/blinded the other flavours. Once seated, the meal commenced. The dishes—referred to as “moments”—were intricate and clearly crafted with care. However, they were extremely small and heavily reliant on sauces (at times it felt like they were adding caviar to make it fancy). To me, the menu felt overly theatrical, perhaps influenced by the restaurant’s theme but lacking substance. While the quality was evident, the overall concept didn’t resonate with me personally. Several issues, unfortunately, seriously detracted from the experience: Lack of clarity about the dishes The blind tasting format left me frequently unsure what I ate. While staff did provide information when asked, I would have appreciated more proactive explanations. Service timing: There were noticeable gaps between courses and wine pairings, leaving us without food or drink for extended periods. Oddly, the only consistently attentive service was the water refills, with our glasses never dropping below three-quarters full. Wine pairing issues: The most disappointing aspect was the wine service, led by sommelier Wagner. His timing was often misaligned with the food, resulting in wine being served before the dishes arrived and frequently finishing before we could enjoy them with the food. The pours were surprisingly small (see the attached picture which makes the serving of wine look more generous than it actually was), raising questions about whether the restaurant was cutting corners. When I inquired, Wagner responded politely but with a lack of genuine engagement. The final straw came during dessert when we were told there would be only one wine pairing for two dishes, contrary to what was advertised online. Again, the response was indifferent: “That is all you are getting.” In summary, while the food was nice and the setting was pleasant, the overall experience fell short of expectations, especially given the restaurant’s reputation and cost. I left disappointed and, regrettably, cannot recommend this restaurant or understand the hype surrounding it.
