15 Best Hotels in Portland, Maine

"Occupying a Federal-style mansion built in 1823, Blind Tiger is the newest addition to Portland’s historic West End—note the proximity to the Old Port—and one of the newest openings from the Lark hotel group. Every room is different, influenced by its own local “host” who goes so far as to write personalized welcome letters. Looking for a  decadent, food- and drink-based experience in town? Choose the luxurious Bon Viveur suite (which also has a private roof deck). Seeking out great local music and want a room with décor and content inspired by prominent local artists? Go for the Event Records suite. Location, attention to detail, and loads of local touches make Blind Tiger one of the coolest stays in town." - Joe Ricchio, Alexandra Hall

I honestly didn’t expect it to be this good! I’ve heard people recommend this place for a while, and now I totally get why. The vibe is super cozy and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly nice and attentive. Our food took a bit longer than expected, but they followed up on it quickly, which I really appreciated. I ordered the fish and chips, fried mushrooms, French fries, and a root beer — everything was seriously delicious! It turned out to be one of the best dinners I’ve had in a while. If you’re ever in Topeka, this is definitely a must-try spot!

Google
Our food was pretty tasty overall. We also had great service from Gabe. We tried a variety of mostly excellent beers. This place is huge! The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because the food was pretty expensive for what it was, though the steak burger was quite nice. We thought the fish and chips and some of the other offerings were a bit pricey. Still, a fun spot to have beer and enjoy a vintage restaurant vibe.

I absolutely hate Kansas. I hate everything about this place. But I can say with FULL CONFIDENCE that Blind Tiger is the best place. I've come down 4 times for business trips and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have hit this place for food. Prime Rib with Homemade Root beer is incredible. They got a killer ribeye and their noodle dishes are awesome from what my coworker says. Mocktails are delicious as well and the staff are always incredibly friendly and quick. I don't drink myself but my uncle easily loves all the alcoholic beverages here as well. If you don't go you're either dumb or you don't like flavor.

Google
I stop by here every trip to Topeka. It never disappoints. Every beer I have tried is delicious and same goes for the meals. My son calls this his favorite place to get a steak. We will keep coming back!

In town for a graduation and we stopped here for lunch. It was excellent! Our server, Hannah, was amazing! The beer was yummy. 😊

Google
Service and Atmosphere were great. They had a nice selection of beer and food. We tried the Tiger-que sampler plate(brisket, pulled pork, and burnt ends)with loaded mashed potatoes and a side of cheese fries. The sides were fantastic, the burnt ends, and pull pork was also great. The one aspect of the meal that wasn't great was the brisket. I have had some wonderful moist juicy brisket, and this was what I expected. However, I got a couple of slices of brisket that were more relatable to white turkey meat on Thanksgiving. The Brisket was dry and didn't pull like I was expecting. I recommend this place but I wouldn't waste your time with the brisket.

Google
It's a cool place. We sat outside which was great for the beautiful evening. It took a while for us to be greeted, but we needed time to look at the menu. They were out of a lot of items and sadly, our meats were overcooked. My steak was MW instead of MR and my son's brisket didn't appear to be smoked today; it was dry and hard to bite through. The pop tasted like it came out of a two liter, which is unfortunate because I was so excited for Pepsi. The loaded potato was definitely loaded, though. My hubby's Caesar salad and pasta looked amazing. I think the value for price is good and I enjoyed the info about the tigers.

Google
Friendly staff, decent food that is very inexpensive. The beef is good the other meats are mediocre.

Yelp
I know I have reviewed BT many times but I think it's update-worthy. We have been going here more often, as the service & food is greatly improved since pandemic times. The best BBQ around, hands down. Burnt ends and brisket are go-to, but the babyback ribs are on special mid-week, and they fall off the bone. Sauces are awesome, classic KC (masterpiece) style Steak fries are always crispy & dip well in ranch or ketchup, or cheesy & bacon. The wings are great, very smoky. Sauces are good spicy level. The chicken strips are always excellent (and never pre-made). Beer selection is excellent, and other beverages. I love the raspberry wheat, apricot & pina colada. My daughter doesn't like beer, but she enjoys their sours. Husband loves the raw wheat & stouts. We like the bar seating, it's not too loud or crowded. Service has been excellent for over a year now.

Yelp
I'm laughing having just read another reviewer here praise their BBQ as somehow being a substitute for Kansas City BBQ. I have to believe this poor soul has never experienced ANY good BBQ ANYWHERE. Consistent with their entire business model, the Blind Tiger specializes in maximizing profit on products ("craft" brew, cheap smoked meats, nacho platters and low-end booze) that they could/should offer at more affordable prices. The menu is glorified bar food and the BBQ is on the poor end of what is regionally available. Their in-house craft beers and ales (the only ones they sell) have risen in price to $6 or $7 a pint on average for something that can hardly cost them $1 to produce. So if it is more of a bar/tavern they should have Happy Hour specials right? WRONG! Not only that, but "well" drinks and shots are up to $7 each. For reference the Smirnoff vodka they sell at that price point has a RETAIL price of less than 80 cents for a 2 oz shot. Much better options all over Topeka. Pick just about anyplace!

Yelp
The waitresses were all very kind. My husband was over the moon about the beers then had. Great variety. We came on a Friday and their prime rib and bison burger was out of stock so we split a burger. We came a second time and my husband got a steak and I got the tiger Que plate. Some of the meats were dried out however the homemade bbq sauce was delicious.

Yelp
It was July 4th when we were driving through Topeka on our road trip. I wanted to eat Kansas BBQ, but all the BBQ places were closed (understandably). Then I found Blind Tiger Brewery and called them to make sure they were open. When we got there the place was packed! They have a bar section, dining in section, outdoor dining, and a section where they have the brewery. By around 5pm a lot of their BBQs were gone! However, they did have some burnt ends, and let me tell you they were so flavourful, moist, and tender! I am sure there are BBQ specialty restaurants, but this place was delicious! Our server was busy, but he was very attentive, helpful, and very friendly. I don't know how long this place has been around, but you can show wear and tears esp with the carpets and general interior. Some places smelled musty. If it wasn't for that I would definitely give this place 5 stars!

Yelp
The overall vibe of Blind Tiger is very cool. In house brews with scratch made meals. The service was exceptional (4 stars). They kept the beers flowing and the waters full. Chips and Queso to start....well it's more of a Cheese dip and not as creamy as Queso...but still pretty good. Being from Texas I know good Q when I have it...I should have stuck with one of the other menu items that they are known for, but this truly fell short. The brisket was super tuff, dry and you need a knife to cut it. Burnt ends were small and didn't have much fat content (They should melt in your mouth)...pulled pork was solid, a bit dry but good. The mac was sticky instead of creamy. Flavor wise the Q was good....cook wise...not so good. Both sauces were delish....Overall visit was good...visiting with family is always a good time. It wouldn't stop me from visiting again as they have a vast menu of other items I would like to try...Ohh...the Beer...Excellent!

Yelp
Always great bbq!! I come here everytime I'm in town!! Burnt ends is where it's at but I always want to try more bbq... soo the combo platter is what I get.

Yelp
I think this is a cool spot. I was passing thru and wanted a Topeka specific vibe/ tradition place and wasn't disappointed. The beer I had was fantastic. Exactly as the wait staff presented it. Wish I had gotten a growler but I was flying home in a few days so it wasn't plausible. The food was great. I had the steakhouse burger which is a mix of the trimmings on their steaks. Im not a burger guy. But I read the description and had to try it. It was really awesome. Grilled sour dough bread. The pickle with it was great. So great. Wish I had one right now. Definitely give it a try if just visiting.

Yelp
Stopped in for an afternoon snack and our eyes bugged out when the nachos were served. They were enormous! Excellent ratio of chips and toppings. I enjoyed a pint and had fast friendly service.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't get the Rueben! I'm from the home of the Rueben, Omaha. It's one of my favorite sandwiches hands down. So I was very disappointed to bite into the worst Rueben I've ever tasted. The meat was dry & even hard around the edges of the sandwich. Yikes! There was not enough kraut or sauce to save the sandwich. My wife had the smoked turkey sandwich. It was really dry, but had a lot of sauce so it was edible. The cowboy beans were too spicy for her taste. On a positive note, the side salad was good & so was the service. Not sure I'd go back. If I do, I won't get the Reuben!

Yelp
Well known as a place for steak and other great food. Never heard a bad word about this place other than the huge stairway to the second floor and only entrance Rain, Snow, ice or long walk is not your thing, better wait for better weather .

Yelp
I always ask other brewery's bartenders, "who has the best beer in town, other than yourself?" Most in Topeka said "Blind Tiger, no contest". Not to disparage the other breweries in town, but I can see why Blind Tiger has earned this reputation. Blind Tiger has a good variety of beer styles available, but where they excel is in their German style offerings. The dunkel and maibock are exceptional examples of the styles, and their IPA's are very solid as well. I'm always a little hard on BBQ restaurants, and typically, breweries tend to focus more on their beer than their food. Blind Tiger has obviously not followed this trend, as their food was almost as good as their beer. I think the BBQ is "better than most" that I've tried in Kansas, and their brisket was sliced thick (as it should be) and not dry at all. The sauces were good, and the bbq beans had large chunks of meat in it. All in all, if you're looking for exceptional beer and great food in Topeka, you can't go wrong with Blind Tiger. Also - the bar staff were exceedingly friendly. It's always nice when traveling alone to have a pleasant conversation with a bartender in a new city. I hope the owner recognizes them for their professionalism and friendliness.

Yelp
The two of us had the BBQ Variety platter and the food tasted good but it was barely warm. I ordered a beer and there were quite a few bugs flying around (it's a restaurant so yeah kind of expected). One flew in my beer and I pointed it out to my server and instead of saying "Hey let me get you another one" - I was offered to order another beer and pay for it.

Scott E.

Yelp
Stuffed Mushrooms are delicious . Steak was a little tough. I recommend Blind Tiger.

Eric D.

Yelp
Only good for drinks. Avoid the food. The quality is low. The meats are tough and chewy. And the brisket is nowhere near the quality found in KC or practically any BBQ joint. It's just a waste of money.

Yelp
We visited here on a trip to Topeka for a tournament. I believe it was a Saturday eve. They were pretty busy. Service was a bit slow. (45-60 min from ordering to being served. Drinks empty) but we ordered the Cajun pasta and Alfredo pasta. It was delicious. Price was extremely reasonable as well.
google avatar

Deana C.

Yelp
I ordered the turkey club sandwich with my party but we had to sit at a separate table since the table we were given was entirely too small. I specifically asked for no chipotle mayo and I was given double. That was not only the problem here is the following list: 1) charged gratitutity though we sat at a separate table. 2) Our food was excessively late and we had to take it to go 3) when I arrived home I noticed I had chipotle mayo on both sides of my bun when I asked for it not to be on my sandwich Floor was dirty, bathroom was crowded, waitstaff was lurking around.

Heidi E.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed the food here, but the service can be slow. Not sure if it's what we order or if the server is just pokey.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
Definitely a brewery/sports bar vibe here. The food is solid, but where they shine is their beer. I had the prickly pear sour, which was really good. Light in the sour, so it still tastes like beer. Husband had the Octoberfest and advised it tasted like Octoberfest. Our server was great, as was the hostess who found us a lovely seat away from the ac vents (as it was pouring when we arrived and we were soaked).
google avatar

Walleye M.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today while working in Topeka. So pleased to see the Lent specials and the multiple seafood options. Walking in you are immediately greeted by a wonderful hostess who offered multiple seating options as the weather was perfect to sit outside. I choose to sit in their beautiful bar area and work a bit. Crowd noise was soft, overhead music not intrusive and service was perfect. Ordered blackened salmon and could not have been more pleased. So nice to have food served hot, fresh, and prompt. There was no rush from the staff to eat and leave even though they were busy, just great food and great service. Can't wait to come back and try some of the other items as the menu looks great.

Terresa M.

Yelp
Great food, a patient server; a great way to celebrate a birthday with friends. Thank you to Blind Tiger!
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
Though we love the beer, the food at Blind Tiger is average bar fare. Family LOVE the burnt ends here. The service, however, is hit and miss. We always eat in the bar at a table because we generally get better service than in the main dining rooms, but even when we do we find the service to be good one time, indifferent the next, and poor the following time. It's a shame, because it's local and we'd love to be regulars, but we just can't get consistent enough service to do so.
google avatar

Rita L.

Yelp
The food here was so good! It's been 5 years since I'd been here and I still think about it. I live out-of-town and haven't been back, but I'm going to make the trip soon! I'm looking forward to it. I might get the wings, since last time they looked amazing!
google avatar

Dannah S.

Yelp
Cool place to eat at in Topeka. Service was friendly and pretty good food. I tried the Texas Roadrunner and i really enjoyed the brisket it had even though it was lukewarm but other than that it was great and i love that a lot of their dishes use local meats.
google avatar

Chase D.

Yelp
This place is a late 90s/early 00's craft beer time capsule. The food, the beer, and the ambience all come together to create a unqiue and great experience. For all craft enthusiasts tired of the pop up slushie beer breweries getting slapped together in warehouses on the edge of every town, BT is a long, refreshing swig of craft nostolgia.
google avatar

Marisa B.

Yelp
Walking in the restaurant is beautiful and very festive. Fun place to watch your local sports team play on tv. Our waitress was so sweet and very attentive to the needs of our table. And the food is delicious great portion sizes for the price.
google avatar

Darlene R.

Yelp
Food is generally good. The barbeque and beerare great. I love the stuffed mushrooms as a appetizer. We treated company from out of town and they loved it. Afterwards, we took home a growler of Blind Tiger Bok
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
The staff at the Combat Air Museum recommended this restaurant, and we were not disappointed. Jake was our server, and he took excellent care of us. The food was good, and the beer was tasty. They were busy, but not too busy to do a good job.
google avatar

Lori L.

Yelp
What a great place!! We were in Topeka for the day and we decided this is where we wanted to eat based on reviews. Let me tell you that it stands up to the reviews. The beer is very good. The food is very good. The service is above and beyond! We came for lunch on a Friday afternoon which also happened to be my husband's birthday. We each ordered a beer, both really good, raspberry wheat for me and pale ale for him. I had the smoked prime rib dinner and he had a ribeye. I then got a flight of beers he had another beer! Come and enjoy!

Audrey S.

Yelp
This is a family favorite for sure. We have been going here for many many years! Great food love their steaks

Goose P.

Yelp
Get the Prime rib dinner. It was spectacular. It was huge, I split it and it was plenty to fill us up. The horseradish is top notch. It was a great deal and if I ever come back to Topeka I will be getting this again.

Yelp
Blind Tiger is the original Topeka brewery... having navigated the ever changing rules, surviving recessions and COVID. My family had dinner last night and ordered sandwiches, steak and one of the Lenten seafood specials. To begin with the bar screwed up the beer order, but got it rectified. The standard Top Gun Ipa was fine but the New York Hazy Ipa was neither hazy nor good tasting. The house root beer was a hit with the table. The Lenten special catfish po' boy was good served with a remoulade on a standard roll. Would have been better had the bread had some body. The fried chicken sandwich was juicy, and served with a great sauce, accompanied by seasoned fries. The Texas Roadrunner was also a hit, a moist grilled chicken breast topped with pulled pork and served on a bed of rice. The Top Sirloin steak was prepared a perfect medium, and was tender, considering the cut of beef. Less satisfying was the butternut squash which was served with it. Unfortunately the menu doesn't offer a green vegetable like broccoli, asparagus or spinach consistently. The butternut squash was served in a sweet brown sugar butter sauce and really didn't go well with the dish. A special note should be made for the service, the waitress and manager were both very accommodating. You are made to feel like a valued customer. I always try to go to Blind Tiger whenever visiting Topeka, and my most recent meal makes we want to return tonight.
google avatar

Jamie M.

Yelp
This is the best place ever!!! The best Caeser Salad I've ever had. Best BBQ And THE SIRLOIN WAS TO DIE FOR!! Our waitress was amazing as well!! You do not want to miss out on this!! The beer is excellent too
google avatar

Taggert M.

Yelp
Having the Burnt Ends for dinner. I started my meal with the Smoke Follows Beauty beer. It's really good. Then I followed that with a yummy Top Gun IPA. Get down here if you live in the area or are driving through Kansas. You won't be disappointed.

Crystal B.

Yelp
If you patronize this establishment, only order appetizers with a small group of people. Our experience at Blind Tiger was horrible, to the point many in our party said they would never return. A couple of family members in our party said that they had stopped coming because of the food and service but only came because my grandson turned 13 and wanted to have dinner at the Blind Tiger. The Ambiance was great. However, the food took forever to come out of the kitchen. When the food finally arrived, we were missing four meals, one of which was for the birthday boy; when his steak finally came out, it was undercooked by a lot. So, they had to take that back to re-cook. So, more time waiting. And unfortunately, the meals we were waiting on were for children. My 4-year-old grandson waited for ketchup to eat his hamburger. When the manager came to tell us about the missing meals, we told her we needed condiments. Someone from our party had to get up and get them. Additionally, my husband and mother ordered the chicken fried chicken like they had in the past, but this time, they had to return their meals because it tasted bitter. I knew my husband felt like this because I was sitting next to him, but I didn't realize until later that this was the same issue with my mother when I looked down at the table and saw that she hadn't eaten her food and then realized she had the same meal as he. I called two days before for reservations and even changed the original time of 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at their request. We still waited for drinks, condiments, food, and our checks! We left the restaurant around 8:45 and were only actively eating for 30 minutes. We don't blame the waiter because he was new, having only been there a few weeks, so he was doing his best for such a large group. We made sure we tipped him well. We were surprised that he didn't have any help delivering food. There were enough employees there because you could see them walking around and about five sitting at tables eating food. Some were walking around putting up decorations. They did comp the four meals, take the chicken fried chicken meals off, and give everyone a 25% discount on their tickets. However, the damage was done, and they have lost good customers. I will only go if I am ordering appetizers. That's always safe.
google avatar

Phil B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and nicely decorated/furnished. Restaurant is large in size but even though they have signs up that they are in need of several positions to be filled (apply if you live in the area and are looking for a job!) the service quality did not lack. Menu offers several intriguing options and I settled with a triple meat BBQ platter. Everything was great, but the brisket was pretty dry unfortunately. Nice beers as well and when I couldn't make up my mind, the server offered a couple samples even.
google avatar

Daniel Z.

Yelp
I love the beer and have been there a few times just for beers. I went in for Oktoberfest and tried the schnitzel with steak fries and we had one beer. So two beers, brat meal and a schnitzel meal was $52. 1) a pork loin is still very cheap to buy in the current economy 2) a brat is also very cheap 3) fries and potatoes for the potato salad are verrry cheap. 4) the Schnitzel was almost not edible. It was like chewing leather. $52 for that is ridiculous. 3's for the beers Only.
google avatar

Don S.

Yelp
I believe the beer is the best brewery in Topeka. The Food is hard to judge because I always order the exact same thing each time, Texas RoadRunner. It's a chicken breast with brisket on top with melted cheese pico and buffalo sauce. On top of a bed of rice and beans for a side. It would be a five start rating if it stopped there. Unfortunately it doesn't, I have ordered this meal probably 50 times and have always substituted the rice and beans for a single order of fries. Have never had an issue with it until today. Now I am being told that it's signature dish and they can't do that without charging more. Not to mention on a regular bases the service is extremely slow. Just to be clear I don't understand how at one point it's okay and the next it isn't. As to the ambiance it is a cool building with lots of seating.

Brian L.

Yelp
Great Service and Beer. Prime Rib Sandwich and Chicken Tenders are delicious. Only subpar dish was the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, but really easy to wash down with a nice IPA or Dunkel. One of the safest bets in Topeka
google avatar

Clint S.

Yelp
Excellent appetizers and beer selection. Really enjoyed everything that we ordered. Did not anticipate being as good as it was. Chicken tenders are not something I generally thought but very good.
google avatar

Shelly R.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place!!! I always make sure I get to eat there at least once when I'm in Topeka! The service is always friendly & even though the wait is a bit long during the busy hours/weekends, the food is worth the wait!

Jackie B.

Yelp
We have been here 2.5 hours and still don't have our food. Poor drink service. Drinks spilled. Wait staff disappeared. This is the second time we have had this experience. Update. Took us over 4 hours to order eat and pay.

Cameron H.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at the Blind Tiger Brewery! The Hefe is super good, and the burnt ends were exactly what I wanted. I also tried the seasoned fries and the beans, both delicious. It was a great environment for the occasion, and both of their bbq sauces were awesome. Highly recommend. Our server Courtney was great as well!
google avatar

JOSEPH B.

Yelp
Mother's Day dinner at The Blind Tiger, with my baby doll, Vergie! We had bone in Buffalo wings, nachos (they were huge), and a delicious salad! For our main course, we both had their mouth watering, tender and juicy, ribeye. We both had green beans, and I had a baked potato with cheese and bacon. For desert, we had their fantastic Red Velvet Cake. For our drink, we had their fantastic, Root Beer, that they make 'in house'! Our server was Rabyn, who is one of the best servers I have ever had (she answered all of our menu questions, was extremely personable, totally professional, and was right on point, on everything! The Managers, Chase, Jason, and especially Damien, we're incredible, and check with us to make sure things were great!
google avatar

Brendan B.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in topeka. The beer is always solid and the food is excellent as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Was in Topeka for one night only for work. Arrived around 730 and needed fast and simple. Blind Tiger added good to the list.
google avatar

Cason C.

Yelp
Use to be one of my favs however service is slow, took forever to get our food, and food wasn't even warm when it finally came.
google avatar

Yelp
Blind Tiger is an awesome gem in Topeka. This part of Topeka has gotten a bit rougher in recent years, but the Blind Tiger is worth the stop for sure. The menu is huge, and has something for everyone. I was pleasantly surprised by the rib tips on a recent visit. Nice smoke flavor and then it appears they are finished or reheated on a grill when ordered. Very delicious. The BBQ sauces were good, but the spicy one had almost no heat. The cobb salad is humongous, and enough for two people to eat for lunch. It was unbelievably big and had a huge amount of smoked chicken on it. For $16, I was expecting a good sized salad, but it exceeded my expectations for sure. I wish they'd offer a brunch on weekends!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Stopped in here late one night driving back to Memphis from Denver. This is a web-lit pub known - based on Yelp ratings - for their BBQ. I usually order ribs so I can compare differing locations, however those weren't on the menu. So, I had the large portion of Burnt ends. It came with 2 side sauces, both quite good. They have quite a variety of craft beers also. Appreciative of heavier/darker beers I had the appropriately named "I Like Dark Beer" - also quite good. Service was very quick and pleasant. The dining area was closed for a private affair, but I didn't mind sitting at the bar, and there were other tables in the bar area had I desired. Prices seemed standard - $15.50 for the Burnt ends, and $5.45 for the beer.

Eric W.

Yelp
Haven't eaten here for years and realized I have been missing out. My wife and I had a very good and reasonably priced meal along with an excellent Bloody Mary. Nice to be served made from scratch food for a change, that was cooked and seasoned well. The service and atmosphere were also very good. Thanks for a nice evening out Blind Tiger, and job well done!
