What It’s Like to Eat at Restaurants When You’re Blind | Eater

"Opened in Zurich in 1999 as the original “dining in the dark,” this concept restaurant—founded by a blind pastor—became wildly popular and inspired dozens of similar ventures worldwide. Guests stash phones, are led conga-line style into a pitch-black dining room by blind and low-vision servers, and taste a series of mystery dishes while staff guide them to seats. Beyond the novelty, the operation was explicitly created to generate empathy and has provided reliable employment opportunities for blind workers." - Andrew Leland

Dining in the dark in Zürich is truly an unforgettable experience, and it’s easy to see why this place has been thriving for over 25 years. From start to finish, everything was exceptional - the food was delicious and full of flavor, and the service was absolutely wonderful. What makes it even more special is the team behind it: differently abled individuals who bring such warmth, professionalism, and care to every moment. It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience that stays with you and opens your perspective in such a meaningful way. I’ll definitely be recommending this to all my friends - it’s something everyone should try at least once.

This was a wild experience for sure. We had a group of about 10 people and half of them had a great dinner event, a quarter really had a transformative experience, and a quarter were truly petrified. I really enjoyed the food and it was crazy how different it is for those of us with all our functions to be forced into understanding the experiences of others. I ended up just eating with my hands caveman style. It did really help our team appreciate the plights of others- I sure emerged incredibly thankful for the simple gifts of senses I take for granted. That all said- be aware it is true pitch black in there- not kind of dark- pitch black. That really didn’t go over well with some of our team members- a couple were truly minutes short of a panic attack and almost left- but we recognized this and mentally supported and comforted them. For me, a really cool, eye-opening (pardon the pun) experience.

A wonderful experience I could not imagine until we tried it. Eating and staying in total darkness for the whole time widens your remaining senses. The food is delicious, we had the four-courses surprise menu (there are also vegetarian options available) and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Consider it is not a place suitable for small children since once you have been seated it's very difficult (impossible without the staff support) to move in and out the dining area. Also no light emitting devices (phones, watches, etc) is allowed inside the dining area (they support lockers for your stuff) since it would ruin the whole atmosphere and concept. I can strongly suggest it, but take into consideration to plan your visit ahead of time and make a reservation.

The experience of dining in the pitch dark room was unique and incredible. The wait staff are all blind or visually impaired, and navigate you through the darkest room I have ever experienced. The unique experience of needing to navigate a dining experience while sightless is both exciting and also made me more aware of the experiences of those with impaired vision. The food served was all incredible - I opted for a surprise menu, which is 3 courses and you have to guess what you have been served. Not being able to see makes all the experiences of taste, touch and smell more intense when you don't know what you have been served. The service from everyone we encountered, including in reception and in the dining service, was fantastic and full of laughs and humour. Would highly recommend, one of my favourite travel experiences to date.

This is a very quite dining experience. I can’t say I would choose to do it more than once, but I’m so glad we did it! Dinner is in a completely dark room (you cannot see anything!!) Our service was so kind and jovial, and the food was very tasty! My teenagers felt it was a great experience to remind them of how the blind community, experience life.

What a wonderful experience! Anya took great care of us. I have never had an opportunity to eat dinner in complete darkness, so it definitely made me understand what a challenge visually impaired people live with every day. The food was delicious even though I guessed incorrectly what I was eating. Definitely worth the time and expense.

Experience was amazing! Really fun, strange, and humbling to eat in complete darkness. I was fascinated by how the servers were able to serve us food and drinks and navigate the dark! Food was pretty mediocre, very little options, and very expensive - I think you are just paying for the experience. Def fun to do one time!

You go for the experience, not necessarily the food. It’s an extraordinary experience that was super stressful at first — e.g. lots of people talking but you can’t see anyone. I recommend it for the sensory experience and the empathy it encourages. Food was fine. Service was friendly but super slow … 3 course meal took 3 hours (7p-10p), which was extra challenging for us in the dark.

Yelp
If you need a humbling experience and change in your life attitude come to this restaurant! I'm a visitor from San Francisco and I have never experienced anything like this in my life. It teaches you a lot about yourself and how you respond to visual impairment. I used the survival skills I learned in school to locate my glass or picking up a fork in pitch black darkness. I chose the vegetarian option and the 3 courses were very flavorful and I was able to taste the food even more so in the dark. I felt like the dark made my sensory of my palate enhanced. Keep in mind everything in Zurich is extremely expensive. Wait I should say the upper echelon of the world! Anyways, you pay for the experience. This really changed my outlook in life and I have even more gratitude when I wake up everyday! I was very grateful for this unique experience!

Yelp
Super cool experience: you dine in the darkness! But try it with silverware, and you'll make a mess. I had the rabbit, with veggies and potato mash- the food was tip top, and I never broke a glass! The chocolate truffle tort was a tasty little sweet, and the Lazarus wine was a soft, fine treat. The wait staff are visually impaired, but kind, and the service is as good as any you'll find. All and all it was pricey, but it's for a good reason: try out Blindekuh- dine in the dark in any season!

Yelp
Amazing experience!! This needs to expand to other countries too. The experience is not only about the foo, but the food was not bad by any stretch of imagination either!! Will absolutely recommend this to anyone in Zurich.basel or anywhere in Switzerland. They are vegetarian friendly too.

Yelp
This restaurant isn't for everybody. There's virtually no light in the dining area. Eating in absolute darkness can be intimidating for some, for the others, it is a unique experience. Most of the staff is visually impaired. Your waiter will show you to your table and then the fun begins. I wouldn't recommend to take small children to this restaurant, as the darkness can be quite scary. I also wouldn't go there in a party greater than four or six people. Communication in the dark can be hard, if there are too many voices to listen to. And always ask the waiter to guide you, when you want to leave the room. Finding the way to the bathroom is an almost impossible task for the visually oriented. The food is quite good but also slightly more expensive than in normal restaurants. But after all, you're also paying for the experience. If you're up for an adventure, I'd definitely recommend a trip to the Blindekuh.
