What It’s Like to Eat at Restaurants When You’re Blind | Eater

"Opened in Zurich in 1999 as the original “dining in the dark,” this concept restaurant—founded by a blind pastor—became wildly popular and inspired dozens of similar ventures worldwide. Guests stash phones, are led conga-line style into a pitch-black dining room by blind and low-vision servers, and taste a series of mystery dishes while staff guide them to seats. Beyond the novelty, the operation was explicitly created to generate empathy and has provided reliable employment opportunities for blind workers." - Andrew Leland

Experience was amazing! Really fun, strange, and humbling to eat in complete darkness. I was fascinated by how the servers were able to serve us food and drinks and navigate the dark! Food was pretty mediocre, very little options, and very expensive - I think you are just paying for the experience. Def fun to do one time!

This is a very quite dining experience. I can’t say I would choose to do it more than once, but I’m so glad we did it! Dinner is in a completely dark room (you cannot see anything!!) Our service was so kind and jovial, and the food was very tasty! My teenagers felt it was a great experience to remind them of how the blind community, experience life.

What a unique experience! Eating in complete (!) darkness and enjoying a fabulous dinner. Quality and taste of the food was really great. Very well organized and such amazing hosts. Recommending 10/10!

You go for the experience, not necessarily the food. It’s an extraordinary experience that was super stressful at first — e.g. lots of people talking but you can’t see anyone. I recommend it for the sensory experience and the empathy it encourages. Food was fine. Service was friendly but super slow … 3 course meal took 3 hours (7p-10p), which was extra challenging for us in the dark.

Its a very special place. Not only the total dark, but also the crew and service personell (some are blind and work there since more than 10 years) are amazing and touching. You have to experience it and many thanks to the team for their dedication, that made the stay something unique !

The Blinde Kuh restaurant in Zurich is, without a doubt, the most unique dining experience we've ever had. Eating a delicious meal in complete darkness forces you to rely on your other senses in a way you never thought possible. It's truly an eye-opening (pun intended!) adventure. The food was excellent, a testament to the skill of the chefs who are creating in a challenging environment. While the prices are a bit on the higher side, the experience is well worth the splurge. Knowing that Blinde Kuh is a nonprofit, employing blind and visually impaired individuals, makes the entire experience even more special. It's not just a restaurant; it's a foundation with a mission, and dining there directly supports their important work. If you're looking for a memorable and thought-provoking meal in Zurich, you absolutely must visit Blinde Kuh. Prepare to be challenged, delighted, and inspired. Highly, highly recommended!

Definitely a unique experience and an impressive feat from the waiters to serve food in complete dark. I went with a voucher for the special "table for two" worth 230. At the end I was asked to pay another 15, not sure what for, and then the lady at the reception asked unprompted whether I also wanted to leave a tip, which I thought was quite rude and it left a bitter taste after a nice dinner.

It’s for sure an experience to eat in the dark and be served in the dark. However our overall experience was not so good unfortunately. - We needed to wait almost 10min before a server could guide us to the table - it was very noisy in the restaurant and not easy to communicate, even if we were 2 - the food not very refined and the waiter not super friendly. - also it was not very cheap, 163chf for 2 vegetarian 3 course menu and .5l water We would not go again even if the experience is quite something.

Yelp
If you need a humbling experience and change in your life attitude come to this restaurant! I'm a visitor from San Francisco and I have never experienced anything like this in my life. It teaches you a lot about yourself and how you respond to visual impairment. I used the survival skills I learned in school to locate my glass or picking up a fork in pitch black darkness. I chose the vegetarian option and the 3 courses were very flavorful and I was able to taste the food even more so in the dark. I felt like the dark made my sensory of my palate enhanced. Keep in mind everything in Zurich is extremely expensive. Wait I should say the upper echelon of the world! Anyways, you pay for the experience. This really changed my outlook in life and I have even more gratitude when I wake up everyday! I was very grateful for this unique experience!

Yelp
Super cool experience: you dine in the darkness! But try it with silverware, and you'll make a mess. I had the rabbit, with veggies and potato mash- the food was tip top, and I never broke a glass! The chocolate truffle tort was a tasty little sweet, and the Lazarus wine was a soft, fine treat. The wait staff are visually impaired, but kind, and the service is as good as any you'll find. All and all it was pricey, but it's for a good reason: try out Blindekuh- dine in the dark in any season!

Yelp
Amazing experience!! This needs to expand to other countries too. The experience is not only about the foo, but the food was not bad by any stretch of imagination either!! Will absolutely recommend this to anyone in Zurich.basel or anywhere in Switzerland. They are vegetarian friendly too.

Yelp
This restaurant isn't for everybody. There's virtually no light in the dining area. Eating in absolute darkness can be intimidating for some, for the others, it is a unique experience. Most of the staff is visually impaired. Your waiter will show you to your table and then the fun begins. I wouldn't recommend to take small children to this restaurant, as the darkness can be quite scary. I also wouldn't go there in a party greater than four or six people. Communication in the dark can be hard, if there are too many voices to listen to. And always ask the waiter to guide you, when you want to leave the room. Finding the way to the bathroom is an almost impossible task for the visually oriented. The food is quite good but also slightly more expensive than in normal restaurants. But after all, you're also paying for the experience. If you're up for an adventure, I'd definitely recommend a trip to the Blindekuh.
