The Best Restaurants in Old Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Three years since its opening in the historic quarter, Bloom Sushi is well-known as one of the best vegan sushi spots in town. The menu appears at first glance like that of any traditional Japanese restaurant (think: maki, nigiri, tempura), but its creative ingredients make it stand out from the rest. Also on offer are a range of sake- and kombucha-based cocktails." - Eater Staff

Google
I love places with a sampler platter and this one had a good one. It came with soup, gyoza, a douzen assorted sushi and a dessert. Splitting it with my partner worked out well and let us try a bunch. The types of sushi were pretty varried so each one felt pretty unique. Some were more focused on the creamy aspects while others focused more on the fresh crunch but both were good in different ways. The staff was friendly and quick and the palce itself was filled with a warm hue which is always nice.

Google
absolutely recommend! this really was all around a great experience. we shared the tasting menu and our server was wonderful and very informative of the meal, the sushi was so flavourful and hard to believe it was vegan. i had the margarita and it was perfect! we ended the meal with the brownie and rhubarb sauce, which had wonderful texture and flavour! on top of all this, the restaurant has a beautiful ambiance!!

We arrived to a packed restaurant facing Montréal en Lumière. We didn't need a reservation but request if you have seating preferences. We sat outside on a platform outdoor seating in the front of the restaurant. It was cozy but a tight space. The waitress was professional and attentive. It was a packed restaurant so don't expect quick service; make sure you have good company to keep you distracted from the fact that it's been 10 minutes and your order hasn't been paced yet + another 15-20 minutes before your apps come out. We ordered the +2 omakase & rock and roll futomaki , and salmon sashimi appetizer. Really interesting flavors that I've never tried before. The salmon sashimi was delicious & well prepared. The rock and roll futomaki could've been softer (rice was hard).

We had a great experience at Bloom. The service was fast and friendly and the food was very good. Great option for vegans and meat eaters alike. I also found the prices very reasonable, $60 for 4 course omakase for 2 people.

Vegan sushi! What a concept!! Just off a busy street, it’s a simple place for great Sushi. Sparse decor, very friendly service. It may help to know sushi terms like Hosomaki, Futomaki etc (we didn’t!) and asked the waiter for a menu to look up what each one was. We ordered the combo for two that comes with soup and a sampling of items from the menu. The service was great, the sushi was yum.. and as vegetarians, we could eat the sushi without being concerned there may be some fish in there items. Highly recommend.

Went for Valentine’s Day and was honestly a bit disappointed. I’ve been to their old port location which I LOVED so that is why we decided to book it to celebrate but this was not the experience I remember and loved. Both locations have great decor and ambience, this one is right on busy St. Catherine’s but they have done a good job at hiding that fact and making it a nice experience. The service was good, nothing exceptional but definitely nothing to complain about. The food is unfortunately the negative in this review. The only notable dish of this meal was the arancini which was very tasty! The others were nothing special with some of them even tasting bad. Keep in mind that we were served a set menu for the night so I would be happy to update this review at another time. I hope that it was just the case of a bad set menu which was both expensive and not tasty!

Google
A decent experience there for valentines. The atmosphere and service was nice and they’ve done a great job with the space and the restaurant decor. The valentines dinner was okay, some parts of the meal I personally didn’t like, others were okay, and certain dishes delicious. The entree was decent, a few too many sushi’s had beets for my liking but overall it was good. The appetizer rice balls(I forget their name) were delicious but the “salmon” not very good. I’m definitely willing to go back and adjust my rating, I’ve eaten at their other location before and it was amazing I just didn’t think the valentines menu was great.

Yelp
I second what my fellow Yelpers are saying about the restaurant. One of the best sushi places I have been too. Outstanding food, modern, cozy decor & great ambience. They also have patio seating outside. I order about 6 different rolls and all of them where equal delicious! Prices are a bit high for the portion, but I understand that a lot of work and art goes into making this menu. Yes, I am a sushi vegan fan and highly recommend this place......

Yelp
As a vegetarian I am always so excited to eat plant based sushi. Sadly this really missed the mark for me. We did the omakase deluxe and I think every single piece has a tempura element. Some combos were just bizarre (rice paper and roasted red pepper tastes weirdly Italian). I would say 2-3 of the pieces were okay but nothing was spectacular and it was quite heavy for being plant based. The cocktail was also watery and one note.

Yelp
If you are a vegan and want sushi this is your spot. If you don't like fish but want to get in on the sushi action, this is your spot. A lovely interior of blond wood welcomes you. The sushi menu is not overwhelming but the combinations are too intricate and creative to be described here. If you feel adventurous they offer an omakase dinner. We ordered gyoza and two rolls. All was amazing. I don't know how they make vegan salmon but it sure looks like the real thing. They have some lovely cocktails too. I would be a regular here if I lived in Montreal. Enjoy!

Yelp
Highly recommend this place for their appetizers (only). They have some of the best miso soup and gyoza. But when it comes to their sushi, they mix their fruits, nuts (almonds), and veggies altogether to make a huge blend of unappetizing sushi. I was super excited after having their appetizers and was looking forward to their entree but twas a huge disappointment. Also, their service was super slow. For those that don't know, this place is vegan so don't expect your regular tuna and salmon here.

Yelp
One of the best sushi places I have been to. Outstanding food. Modern , cozy decor & great ambience. Tons of sushi and poke bowl choices. Superb food !!! Great location !! Make sure to block sufficient time.. takes much more time than expected or maybe we were starving !! 5 mins Walking distance to St Paul, Marriott based hotel.

Yelp
Was really looking fwd to this. Heard they were making sushis with flowers, but unfortunately, from what I understand, they had to revisit their menu since the pandemic. In general, the sushis are very good and fresh. Some mixes left me on a neutral notes. The ambiance is wonderful. Decor zen and relaxing. The seats are not too comfy. Mostly benches so not elders or injured friendly. I still recommend, as my best friend looooves this place.

Yelp
The restaurant has a nice ambiance and decor. The menu has a good selection of hosomaki and futomaki. However, I wish they had more dishes without deep-fried ingredients. Most of the rolls have tempura or something fried in it. I like that their online menu has pictures of all their dishes, which helps with ordering.

Yelp
Seriously the best sushi I've ever had, vegan or not. Would fly to Montreal just for this place.

Yelp
Our experience here was fantastic! Although we didn't have a reservation, they accommodated us for dinner. Our server, Brendan, & his manager were friendly & welcoming during our entire dinner! The food was delicious...vegan salmon roll & avocado vegan cream cheese roll...vegan matcha ice cream & brownie-all fantastic! Chardonnay also good & my husband's beer also one of his favorites! Our experience made our stay in Montréal even better! Would absolutely recommend & will be back next time we are in Montréal!

Yelp
Everything was great. The sushis are sooo good. I am not vegan and was surprised at how delicious everything was. The restaurant is very pretty and well decorated.

Yelp
Fabulous in every way. Great food, ambiance and service! I wish we had this restaurant near us!

Yelp
The hostess was the most unwelcoming host I've ever encountered. It's understandable that it's busy and reservations are needed, but that was the worst customer service experience with a host ever. Was completely ignored three or four times and purposefully overlooked to help customers who arrived after our party. If the service at the host station is any indication of the service in the entire restaurant...0/10 would recommend. Don't bother. Go somewhere that has tasty sushi for half the price and knows how to welcome all customers in a professional, courteous manner

Yelp
Absolutely awesome restaurant. Beautiful decor as well. The most outstanding, genuine, beautiful and knowledgeable waitress ever. Alyssa had such an awesome personality and presence that we will come back 100 percent and ask for her. Congratulations to management for hiring her.

Yelp
Yesterday, we had a terrible experience at Bloom Sushi. The interval between the arrival of our appetizers and our rolls was nearly two hours, and we were with a small and increasingly tired child. There was a small dog in the restaurant that periodically barked aggressively, and the atmosphere was one of hungry people waiting with no explanation given to us by the servers. There seemed to be no logic to the wait. People who arrived well after us got their food first, but there were also tables with people like us, subjected to a strangely long wait with the kitchen appearing to move at a snail's pace. Apologetic when we flagged her down to ask about this and admitting that there were problems in the kitchen, the server stated that the restaurant would strike the tea, the soup, and the edamame from our bill and offer us free dessert. (She also repeatedly stated that the rolls would be ready soon, lengthening our wait time.) Trusting her at her word, I gave her my card only to see when she printed out the receipt that she struck only the tea from the receipt. When I asked her about this, she shrugged stating that the cost of the dessert (which she had offered to us in recognition of our wait time and which we never ordered) is what the restaurant struck from the bill. Please beware. We are tourists here so we cannot say whether the service is here routinely bad, but we paid a good deal of money to be subjected to a long wait, to have our food trickle out, and to have promises made by the server left unhonored.
