Just tried this place for the first time and it is amazing. They attend fast and their plates are big. Best fries on earth will be coming here often

Good place for a quick meal and to get the popular “combo” which is ribs and chicken grilled on charcoal which gives it, its distinct flavor. I’ve had it for years when I lived around here and come visit when I’m back in town!

Love the food, and come often, however, experience today was very disappointing! 3 adults and 2 toddlers, ordered an appetizer, salad and 3 entrees for a total of $80. The waitress added 20% gratuity automatically, stating the menu is wrong, even though it clearly states that gratuity is added to groups of 6 or more. Will call the Better Business Bureau, and will see if they change their “wrong menu”.

Put simply, the food was great. I ordered combos of pork ribs, chicken, and beef ribs. I can recommend all of them. Some of the cuts are hit or miss though. The rice and fries that come with the combo were great too, although it could be a bit greasy. Great protons, good prices. I would definitely come again.

The food is amazing the fries is chefs kiss and there ribs and chicken the wait might be a little over 10-15 mins because of a lot of people but it’s worth the wait 💯

Never disappointed, great place, awesome prices, always busy, be patient, but they move fast.I recommend half a chicken/ half ribs. Come with fries and yellow rice.abundant portions.finish with a espresso and a tres leches.very important: bring cash!! I don't think they get credit/ debit cards.

Heard about this spot from JL Jupiter (YouTuber) & several people I know and I finally decided to go try it out. Drove from Harlem all the way to Newark hoping that it was worth the drive, gas and tolls.. and tbh, it was indeed worth the trip ! I could smell the bbq as soon as I parked. The staff was very nice and the food was served as per my pics. The wait time was about 20 minutes due to it being Mother's Day, and it was crowded, but the staff got it done. Word of advice... the portions are IMPRESSIVE. I ordered two of the half ribs, half chicken with rice and fries.. and it was more than enough for 4-5 people ! The food...... was FANTASTIC !!!! Well cooked and nice bbq smoke. Not overdone with sauce to cover up the true flavors. As for pricing.. it is very reasonable for what you get. Don't hesitate to stop by !

Slightly better than north newark bbq only because of serving size. Good food but not great. Worth $19 yes but probably could be a better experience for dine-in? Not sure why food quality would change but hoping it is. Could be seasoned better im sure and not give take out orders the end pieces of the rib where it is tough and dry. Willing to try dine in next time. 4 stars is generous at this time.

This place was not what I was expecting when I saw it said BBQ. I went with my parents and we were able to order one plate of 1/2 chicken 1/2 ribs with rice and french fries for only $20!!! And the platter were BIG! The food was good the rice was light and airy the ribs were big pieces (4pieces) and the chicken was juicy (1/2 of a whole chicken). The fries were crispy. The service was good but not the best. Every time we called for the waitress to come over she came back to say she will be right with us which was odd since we just needed small things like napkins. The place was quiet when we got there around 2:30pm but started filling up with kids around 3pm. Overall a 4.0 place. Do note that its CASH ONLY.

Visited Bloomfield Ave BBQ Churrasqueria on a Thursday afternoon for a late lunch. It's a pretty big restaurant, with plenty of tables and large windows. It was just after 3pm, so there were many students eating as well. We took our seats, and an employee handed us the menus, and came back to take our orders. We got the picadillo de cerdo y camaron as well as a half chicken with two ribs. The staff said it'd be about 20 minutes. The food arrived on two very large platters, with portions of yellow rice and fries. Each platter had enough food for 2-3 meals. The meats were seasoned well, with lots of charcoal flavor. The amount of food for the price was definitely worth it.

I am fairly mixed on this place... My wife and FiL have come here many many times over the years, but I just cant seem to find something that I like... The place is a tad bit confusing if you have never been there before.... They did change it up a bit since covid. You used to pay after receiving food and before leaving, but last time I was there, you paid after you ordered while waiting on your food. No Biggy. As a German, I am used to professional / curt staff, but they take it a few steps further... Each time that I order, I get 2-4 meals, but after I place my first order, the person taking the order tries to rush me. She gives me a bill before I finish ordering! Even if I do it over the phone, they do it as well. I've had them hang up on me after I place my first order and them telling me 15 minutes and $18.... But I digress. Inside looks very well worn. It can easily do with a refresh. It is not a cute well worn, but more of a falling apart well worn. Paint a little? Replace worn down furniture? The staff as mentioned above is meh, and try to rush you out like CRAZY! Food is ok. My wife and FiL like their chicken and rib combo. Its ok, its kinda dry for me, but they like it... Do not get their pork steak, it is crazy fatty, and not the good type of fat, like huge piece of fat! I sometimes get their TBone which is decently fatty in a bad way as well.... Last time I got the pork steak, I asked for only fries, and the receipt said P for pappas, but the gave me fries and rice... All in all, it is still a reasonable price compared to other places. You can easily get 1 meal for 2 people, or 2 days of food out of 1 meal. Talk loud and fast.... Oh and this place is a chain, they have like 8 other locations....

Fairly average bbq in the Newark region. The pork ribs are the best, then comes the chicken and the garlic shrimp is pretty much over cooked. The fries and rice are really great especially for mopping up the sauce from the shrimp. Garden salad is surprisingly fresh and crunchy. Probably wouldn't go out of my way but if I'm in the area I'm definitely dropping by again.

I usually stop at this small restaurant to eat when I am in the area. If your in the mood for a quick good bbq chicken, this is your place to go. I ordered the whole chicken with fries and rice and split it with my boyfriend. Not sure how anything else taste off the menu because I usually just order the bbq chicken. This establishment is open for indoor dining but have only have 4-5 tables due to social distancing. Parking is very limited . The restaurant sits on the corner of a busy Main Street.

The shrimp with garlic sauce had WAY TOO MUCH garlic sauce!!!! It tasted good, but easy too powerful!!! Thank God for Pepto Bismol! I literally felt sick and thought i was going to puke. Next time I go there I'll avoid this dish. The chicken and shrimp dish o had the first time I was there was really good, so I'll stick with that.

Good food but the wait is honestly terrible. No good parking and bare minimum English. I'm sure there are other places with the same food on this block

This is a great local spot to have some cheap eats and feed the whole family for under $30. I've been coming here for at least 15 ish years and it's always consistent. This is a no frills place to get really good Portuguese style bbq. The chicken sometimes can be a tad dry but overall this is a wonderful place to eat well on the cheap. Cheers y buen provecho

I was told that this place serve great tasting bbq but today it was no good. The bbq we ordered was so dry and no meat at all. No condiments was provided did we need to ask for it? It was a very disappointing never we going to order from this place.

I truly like this bbq place, the food is alway delicious. Just call ahead and your food will be ready when you get there. Make sure you try the beans they are amazing. Cash only and parking is a little hard to find some time. But definitely if you are in the area check this place out.

Definitely a five star bbq spot. I've traveled across the south; hands down better than Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia's bbq spots. I read the owners bio on the site. I now know why the food is so kickass good; always fresh. I'm glad I found this spot and I'm glad the owner has dedication and respect for good food. It's definitely priced right for the working class too.

10/31/2020: Wanted dishes for Halloween/Birthday party....I feel so stupid not having read these reviews BEFORE ordering $$$$ Take-Out (4 trays= 2 Chicken, 1-BBQ, 1-Steak). Traveled from Jersey City. This food is Tasteless! , Is this a Portuguese thing?.. The Fries were oil soaked and soggy. The Rice had no seasoning and tasted as if it was cooked very early that day or the day before. The meat (beef & Chicken) were over-cooked and chewy. You get miniscule, tiny pieces of meat that are hidden by the mounds of yellow rice and french fries... Never Again .. I will stick with my Hudson County Cuban and Puerto Rican food that have Seasoning and TASTE.

No frills bbq spot. Not the friendliest bunch but good food nonetheless. I usually get the pork ribs with rice and fries for $16. Huge portion of food that can feed a few people. This place can get busy but it's usually a quick turnaround. You can call ahead to pick up your order and CASH ONLY

If I can give 0 stars I would! This restaurant is not the same quality anymore and I will never buy from here again. It's unfortunate that we got food poisoning last night after we ate here and this is the 2nd time! The dining area was dirty with food all over the floor and flies everywhere. Also, the ribs/chicken were so dry and it barely had any meat & the olives tasted like soap which means it was rotten! Please be aware of what you eat here.

I was in the area for a doctors appointment, so I figured I'd stop by. I've had this place bookmarked for a while. This place is located at the corner of 6th St. and Bloomfield Ave. in Newark. Its a pretty sizeable store, and parking is pretty easy on 6th St. I'm a fan of Portuguese BBQ. The amount of food they give you for the price is a really good bargain. $14 for a tray of 1/2 chicken, 1/2 pork ribs, rice, and fries is a deal that can't be beat. I got a good 4 meals from the tray. The food was very good as well. The rice was buttery and both meats were tasty. The ribs are, as others reviewers have stated, a bit tough, and are not the fall off the bone type ribs. I know Portuguese BBQ meats are bit dry, so I decided to get some sauce for my to go order. The chicken with a bit of hot sauce and the ribs with a bit of BBQ sauce was scrumptious. Although the fries are soggy, the plentiful amount outweighs any potential negatives. Soggy fries are good every now and then anyway. The only other place I've tried that is similar to this place is Ferry St. BBQ, in the ironbound section of Newark. I ordered the same tray at both and in comparison to Ferry St., both are about the same in terms of quality and quantity.

Top quality Portuguese BBQ recommended to me by a reliable source. This is my first time having Portuguese BBQ from Newark in about 10 years, and it makes me wonder why I've been settling for a distant 2nd best. Chicken and/or pork ribs grilled over lump charcoal (Royal Oak to be specific). Ribs are very tender, albeit a bit on the dry side. It also could have been meatier. However, the flavor is very simple, but top notch. Chicken probably the best Portuguese BBQ around. Unmistakable char-grilled flavor. I'm so used to drowning my chicken in hot sauce. Adding hot sauce to this chicken would be an injustice. Fries and rice are very good. I prefer my fries thicker, but I've never been one to say No to fries. To my delight, they include a bit more fries than they do rice. The black beans have bits of pork in it! A bit of smokiness and a bit of fat. So far the best black beans I've tasted. Combine it with the rice, and there is still plenty of flavor to spare. Now to convince my coworkers to order from here instead of the nearby joint.

Best ribs I've ever had!! The chicken is good too, but it's all about the ribs at Bloomfield Avenue BBQ. I never order ribs, but that's all I order after trying the chicken n' ribs combo. These ribs are so good that my mom brings a rack back home with her when she comes down to visit. If you're eating in, the dining area is simple and bare-bones, think old school diner or burger shack. Also, if you want a beverage from the cooler, this is a get up and get it yourself type of place. If you're in or around Newark, looking for a low key spot with Portuguese BBQ bursting with flavor, and don't want to spend more than $12.00 per person, then Bloomfield Avenue BBQ is where you need to be.

This is one of those bbq places where one would drive by and pass it by. It's a local place that is well known by people who live there and workers around that area. I have known about this place for years and like to trek up there at least 4 times a year. It brings back good memories.. The place used to have one charcoal grill , now they have 3. So business is good . This is not a Bbq where meats are slow cooked for hours , it's grilled meats in a rotating grill contraption . The meats will cook over charcoal and those flavors of charcoal permeate the meats. . The seasoning is very simple and end result is succulents charbroiled meats . Now the portions are huge .example if you bought the beef ribs , they hand you over a big aluminum tray with rice and French fries that will feed 4 people for 17 dollars. I have tried every bbq meats they carry and I like it . The charbroiled method of cooking makes all the meats delicious . They have a dinning area with pretty good service . Don't be discouraged by the looks of the place . It's quality local bbq that is famous around this area . I think they have much more potential to expand this bbq methods to other areas . It is quality bbq you won't regret eating there. I recommend .. Try it for lunch you won't regret it..

Great taste, fast service in and out. I've tried places near and the flavor is just not the same as it is here,I could eat this almost every weekend

I've had this place bookmarked for ages. But we don't get down this way often. The other day, while driving down Bloomfield looking for someplace tasty to eat, we spotted Bloomfield BBQ and Dickey Dees. Which to choose? Bloomfield BBQ won out. Nice looking place. Friendly server only spoke Portuguese. I responded in broken Spanish. It wasn't pretty but it worked. Two orders of ribs and fries came right out. The ribs were meaty, crispy and juicy. Delicious. The fries were really thin shoestring style. We enjoyed them too. Customary to go order for my wife so she did not feel left out of our adventure. Half a grilled chicken with rice and fries. She enjoyed it very much. Bloomfield BBQ serves up some tasty grilled meats in a pleasant atmosphere. We will be back one of these days.

So I live near this place. My family always chooses this place as a go to when there's no time to cook or special occasions, in which we dine in. Delicious rice, delicious chicken, delicious ribs, delicious fries. I recommend getting a combo.

I haven't been to this place in years and remembered it was really good..great plate of meat with shrimp and meaty ribs..today I went and was soooo dissapointed...looked like the ribs were on a diet..little meat and shrimp..never again..

I've had takeout from here a bunch of times, and always the same thing: ribs and chicken combo with fries and rice. The ribs are consistently a little tough coming off the bone and are sometimes a tad dry, but nevertheless well-seasoned. As for the chicken, I've never had a problem. Same goes for the rice. I love the fries. Thin, kind of oily and far from crispy, but fresh and delicious. You simply can't beat the prices here. $9 for a half portion, which is more than enough for one really hungry person or just enough for two semi-hungry people to share. Or $13 for a full portion if you're feeling fat.

Me and my family have been going to this place for years. The food is very delicious but prepare to wait! You will have to wait at least 30 min until you get your order.

This place is hard to review. I wanted to give more stars for the fresh tasty food, but i had to give them less because of the SERVICE! I love their beef ribs made to order and seasoned perfectly with their fresh crisp salad for a healthy satisfying meal. The lady who takes the orders (older with blonde hair) needs some classes in customer service.....Also, the older man that handles the register can kind of be ...dry..to the point where its off putting. The black beans are also very yummy and cooked with meat

During this pandemic this place is not the place to order from unless you want to wait 2 hours even if you call ahead of time. I called at 5:25pm, arrived at 6:00pm. Had to wait in line until 6:25 to then be asked to pay for my food and have a seat inside the eating area. I didn't get my food that I ordered over the phone until 7:20pm. Food is okay but definitely not worth the wait. I will not be ordering food here until this pandemic is over. Super disorganized.

Coming to this place for years (take out only). I always enjoy the chicken and ribs combo with yellow rice and french fries. In all honesty, the rice and french fries can be oily so if you're on a health kick be prepared to throw it right out the window. The portions are fair. The chicken and ribs are well made and seasoned. The ribs are meaty and rarely tough. The chicken is juicy - well cooked but not burned. It can get quite busy on the weekends and parking is sometimes a problem. Customer service isn't the greatest. There are times the lady at the counter is nice and others were she can be short and quick with you, all in an effort to get you in and out.

Listen I'm from California!!! When I visit family we stop here every time the best ribs I've ever had you don't even need bbq sauce . Omg I wish they delivered soooooo good

Charcoal Flavors! Woohoo! Around this area and Newark ironbound area you will see many , many Portuguese style BBQ restaurants and I must say I've tried just about all of them but This one wins my heart (right behind Pulaski street BBQ in Newark). Yes , there is a long wait here for pickup, usually on the weekends, but moves relatively fast. Parking is hell so I would recommend to bring a buddy along with you. The consistency of fresh fries and rice always satisfies the craving. The chicken is little smaller than normal but very tasty. The ribs are not falls of the bone ribs so be ready to chew people - chew! It's Portuguese style ribs. Anyway, the Ribs are well seasoned and evenly grilled. Very few times I've had Skimpy ribs. My favorite part of the this place has to be the charcoal scent and flavors on my meats. I love it and I assure you, these ribs are not over smoked. I can't say anything about a sit down experience but for the most part I noticed there's always seating available. As for side dishes , I did try their beans and salad once upon a time ago and nothing out of this world so I don't go out of my way to have it. Overall, if you want a bargain meal , come here. Enjoy.

Yum. Great ribs and BBQ chicken. Well seasoned. Don't bother calling in advance. They don't fix it until you get there, anyway. (Unless you have a special relationship with them- it seems) We always get the combo (ribs and chicken), which feeds us for days. We always ask for the pickled veggies along with the rice and fries that come with it. They never seem too happy/welcoming, but who cares? It's take out, fairly fast and delish. Reasonably priced and piping hot.

My dad started bringing my family here since I was a child after Sunday school. The food is amazing. The portions are huge. You can buy one whole platter and feed 3 to 4 people. The look is not very welcoming but the food makes up for it. They have a eating area, and then a pick up area. Best Churrasqueira I have ever been to.

Tried the ribs the place is really good. I will be going again probably try the beef ribs. Not sure what is up with the phone lines since it is hard to call in.The parking is a nightmare.

My favorite place to grab some BBQ Chicken and and Ribs in North Newark. I usually get a 1/2 combo with fries and rice, you get a half chicken and like 4 ribs. Delicious. Sometimes the chicken can be dry from time to time but definitely has flavor all around!!

Been coming here since they opened up years and years ago, love love the food but absolutely the worst customer service EVER! The phone lady has the worst attitude ever and needs to learn how to respect the customers. It's not that the customer is always right but speaking and treating someone who is paying towards your paycheck, should be on the top of her list. Not sure how is she related to the owner, he is that one who handles this register, but she must be to still be working there with that attitude. I hate when they goods of a business is great but the service is horrible. Ultimately, don't bother with this place: the bad outweighs the good!

Great, fresh food. It gets pretty packed in here but for great reason. The price is excellent for the portions they give you. It's seriously cheaper to buy the food here than to buy it and cook it yourself! I've never had anything that wasn't fresh and cooked well. From chicken to ribs to garlic shrimp.

I've been going here since I was a kid and even now, married with two kids and living in Florida, anytime I visit NJ, I still go straight there to eat!! Food is affordable and has amazing quality!! You can't go wrong here to either dine in or take out for any family event you have!!

Best Portuguese pork ribs in the area. Never dried up, like some other places. Always juicy, tender and well seasoned. Place is pretty popular, so they occasionally run out of food on the weekends. Chicken is good too. Garlic shrimp is average.

Food is good but the service is garbage. The old woman taking orders is RUDE and SARCASTIC. So bold behind the counter in that corner. So very unprofessional. Go up a couple blocks to Grill Master or Fogo Grill. Way better service for the same quality food, taste and price.

Easily the best of the numerous BBQ options around. Our family always orders the combo (chicken & ribs) with rice and French fries($14) and an order of black beans ($3). To go orders are always quick and fresh since they're so busy.

Love this place. In all the time I've eaten there only problem I've had was they never get my name right other than that rice is cooked through, the meat is seasoned well and cook perfectly. They are quick but always packed.
