Bloop Bloop - Review - Lincoln Square - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Bloop Bloop is a Lincoln Square counter-service spot with $1 sushi balls. In addition to their rice spheres topped with raw fish, they also have triangle and “sushi sandwiches” that are essentially nori wraps. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - John Ringor

Octopus balls were my favorite!! Hot, creamy, crispy, fresh!! An unconventional sushi experience for sure. If you like rice, this is the spot. You def get more rice than fish but it’s $1 for a reason. It’s fresh & delicious & I will be back soon

The one dollar sushi is a cute and excellent idea for dates, outings and when you’re venturing into the city and don’t want to just deal with the whole ordering sushi in a restaurant. You can order one dollar sushi as much as your stomach content. They have a variety of drinks as well and only one coffee drink. The mango tea latte was my favorite one . You can order thru a screen and they give you a wait number to be call out to. Fast service and affordable.

4/4.5 out of 5 stars. Good idea, great price, cute packaging, variety of flavors. It’s a take out place, so not much room to sit inside and eat but not a huge deal. Sushi balls are of course rice heavy, but it’s $1 so it’s fair. Will be back if around the neighborhood.

I ordered 12 rice balls, 1 lucky sushi bag, 1 sushi boat, and 1 drink. I got all of this for just under $24 including tax. Each rice ball was $1.00, each lucky bag and sushi boat was $1.99, and my drink was $3.99. I went on a Saturday around 5:45. They were out of all flavors of rice triangle and skewers, and a few milk tea flavors. 8 rice balls was more than enough for me for one sitting since they have so much rice in each one, and I had to finish my review later when I could eat the other 6 food items. The average person can expect to eat 6-10 food items. For the drink, I ordered the rose blossom lemonade, with 25% sugar. I don’t know if they stuck to 25%, because it was very sweet. If mine was 25%, then I would recommend not going any higher than that. The rose blossom flavor was a good strength though. Most rose lemonades I’ve tried, the lemonade overpowers the rose. This one however, has enough rose flavor. The lemonade flavor and the rose flavor were well balanced. 5/5 The first and best rice ball I tried was the pickled cucumber rice ball. I would highly recommend it. The seasoning was good and not too weak, so it was quite enjoyable. 5/5 The other rice balls I rated 5/5 include the Snapper and the Smoked Salmon. Both of these were flavorful. I could taste the fish, and there were other flavors there too from seasoning. The rice balls I rated 4/5 include the tuna, white tuna, and fish egg. These were nothing special, they just tasted like rice. Not enough topping. I also rated the avocado rice ball a 4/5 because it’s okay, but nothing special. The other rice ball I rated a 4/5 is the crab stick rice ball, since the wasabi flavor was too strong and was the dominating flavor. I couldn’t taste the crab stick or the rice. These were all fine food, but I wouldn’t order them again. The rice ball I give a rating of 3/5 is the shrimp rice ball. The shrimp was overcooked and therefore tough and flavorless. It was not a good bite. Would not order again and would caution others against ordering. The rice ball I give a 2/5 rating to is the salmon rice ball. It was mostly rice flavor, but a fishy scent and aftertaste. I felt the texture or some stringy bits of fat in the fish. Also as soon as the fish hit my stomach I felt uncomfortable, like it wasn’t the highest quality fish. Would not order again, and would recommend that no one orders it unless they improve the fish quality. I got two fruit rice balls. One mango and one strawberry. They are aimed more towards a dessert course, as they have frosting sauce and sprinkles on top. This sauce isn’t very sweet, so you don’t have to avoid it if you’re someone who dislikes frosting. The toppings don’t add much flavor, only visuals. The dominant flavor in these rice balls was the fruit, which was soft and ripe. 5/5 The lucky sushi bag wasn’t great. I got the shrimp tempura flavor. If you wanted tempura, it’s pretty good, although a very small amount of shrimp. But the bag itself is quite oily and mushy, and the rice is not flavorful. For the price, it’s not worth it at all. 3/5 I also tried a gunkan sushi boat. The topping was metallic tasting. I’m not sure what the topping was since the item was just called “gunkan sushi boat”, but it was sort of a spicy vegetable mixture. Tasted like instant kimchi. If they had better options for filling/topping for the sushi boats, then they might be worth the price. I wouldn’t recommend the flavor I tried. 3/5 Rose Blossom Lemonade - 5/5 Pickled Cucumber Rice Ball - 5/5 Snapper Rice Ball - 5/5 Smoked Salmon Rice Ball - 5/5 Strawberry Rice Ball - 5/5 Mango Rice Ball - 5/5 Tuna Rice Ball - 4/5 White Tuna Rice Ball - 4/5 Fish Egg Rice Ball - 4/5 Avocado Rice Ball - 4/5 Crab Stick Rice Ball - 4/5 Shrimp Rice Ball - 3/5 Shrimp Tempura Lucky Sushi Bag - 3/5 Gunkan Sushi Boat - 3/5 Salmon Rice Ball 2/5 Overall, 4/5 rating

$1? In this zip code? North center ? This is definitely the hidden gem for just $1! I thought I misread the sign—$1 for a sushi rice ball in a neighborhood where even the air feels premium?! But nope, it’s real, it’s delicious, and it didn’t ask for my credit score. Fluffy rice, tasty topping, and the joy of feeling like I beat the system. I’d give it 6 stars if it came with a parking spot.

Got 8 sushi balls including 2 of the desert ones. Perfect amount for lunch/light dinner. I like that it’s an affordable option for take out.

Google
Was very excited for the place and was curious after reading the mixed reviews. We just orders 6 to try out the place as a snack: salmon(2), tuna, scallop, squid, eel. It took about 20 minutes at 5:30, so that was not too much of a wait given dinner time All the sushi balls were too much rice, not enough fish, and overpowered by the sauces. The only one I could taste some of was the eel. The sauce itself was not bad, spicy mayo it looked/tasted like. Overall, yes good price and great for a snack, but not good tasting sushi. Hoping for some improvements in the future because its not all lost yet

Google
Quick and easy to order, with pictures of every item. The food was tasty and affordable. Hope they do well! Very limited seating inside but that's also what I expected as it's a small space.

Yelp
Recommendations: * Salmon Rice Ball * Eel Rice Ball * red snappers Rice Ball I first saw this restaurant trending on Instagram and TikTok, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered six pieces of rice ball and a lemon tea through the self-service kiosk. Some of the triangular rice balls were unavailable, so we focused on the $1 rice balls instead. We tried salmon, snapper, eel, and scallop--each one was flavorful and fresh. The rice balls were made with the right amount of sushi vinegar, which is the traditional way of preparing sushi rice. This extra touch elevated the taste and brought out the freshness of the fish. They are slightly larger than traditional sushi, but surprisingly enjoyable, especially with the added mayo and soy sauce mixed with wasabi. Each order comes in a box, with about 5 to 6 rice balls inside. The lemon tea was refreshing and reminded me of Hong Kong style lemon tea, though the tea flavor could be stronger. We went with 25% sweetness, which felt balanced. The only downsides were the long wait time, we waited about 20 minutes, and the limited seating. There are only four window seats, so if it is full, I recommend grabbing your sushi box and enjoying it at the nearby park.

Yelp
I am really excited about this restaurant I think they just need more time to get the flow of things and I truly am hoping for the best for them. I ordered the Salmon ball, Octopus ball, Red tuna, White tuna, Shrimp, and Gunkan (my favorite). Not sticky rice it didn't hold shape and fell apart as I ate it, but the toppings were good. They didn't give me anything to eat it with (like chopsticks) and I didn't see anywhere to grab those. It seemed they should start prepping before opening by at least making all the rice balls prior then topping them as the orders come through, if possible. I waited for well over an hour for 6 sushi balls and watched other people cancel orders. I think they just need a better system and I want to come back in a few months to try again. Since there are no tables, my experience was mostly a bunch of customers standing and blindly waiting for their number to be called since we can't see them being made. They have one worker making drinks at the register and what seemed like just one worker in the back making the food. The mango tea latte was yummy with popping boba but not a fan of the large mango chunks at the bottom. The removable top is good idea so you're not fighting to get everything off the bottom. Overall, would come back to try again after they've figured out a better system and will update when I do! Hoping for the best!!

Yelp
Sushi balls for only $1?! The sign and the wacky inflatable lumberjack definitely caught my eye and I had to stop in to see for myself. This sushi place is mainly for takeout as there is only one rectangular wooden bar height table with 4 stools against one wall. You place your order at the two kiosks and just wait for your number to be called. The packaging for the drinks and the sushi balls are super cute. I really liked the elaborate red cup that my strawberry refreshing tea with yakult boba came in. I was also surprised to see that there were also onigiris and meat skewers on the menu but were not available at the time that I visited. I ordered a variety of salmon, eel, white tuna, smoked salmon, seeweed and octopus balls. I'll definitely have to come back earlier in the day to hopefully try the skewers and onigiri. This restaurant is definitely a great value.

Yelp
Food is good. The kiosk works great but it is highly inefficient. For what seems so simple, takes so long. Hopefully they work that out but I would still recommend.
