I want to begin by saying that I intentionally chose Blowin Smoque because it is a Black-owned restaurant, and I make a point to support Black businesses whenever possible. I had ordered their food on Uber Eats before and genuinely enjoyed it. That positive experience inspired me to use them to cater my organization’s Annual Leadership Holiday Party on Friday, December 5th.
What happened next was the most unprofessional, confusing, and embarrassing catering experience I have ever encountered.
I placed the order several days in advance, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. delivery. At 4:00 p.m., everything looked fine in the tracking system — until the order was suddenly canceled. When I called the restaurant, the staff member oddly already knew who I was, used my name before I even explained the situation, and blamed a DoorDash driver, saying he didn’t know why the order was canceled.
Things only got worse from there.
EZ Cater informed me that Blowin Smoque was remaking the entire order and that another driver would be dispatched. I was told the food would arrive between 4:45–5:00 p.m. That never happened.
With my home full of guests and no food, EZ Cater told me they were having trouble finding a driver but that the food was ready if I could pick it up myself. I left my own holiday event, drove to Camden, and arrived at the restaurant — only to find out they had not remade anything at all. The staff claimed multiple drivers had shown up earlier and that they “couldn’t remake” the order.
So not only was the order canceled without explanation, but the restaurant also provided conflicting stories to both EZ Cater and me. The end result: I had to order pizza for a catered leadership event at my home. It was deeply embarrassing and completely unacceptable.
My intention was to uplift and support a Black-owned establishment.
My experience, unfortunately, felt the opposite of what I expect from a business rooted in community.
I hope Blowin Smoque takes this review seriously. Poor service happens — but dishonesty, lack of accountability, and refusing to remake the food after committing to do so crosses a line. As someone who runs a publicly funded nonprofit and frequently orders catering for large-scale events, I cannot risk this happening again.
I truly wish this review told a different story. Supporting Black businesses matters — and reliability, professionalism, and integrity matter just as much.
