Yelp
Blue Agave is a Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant located on Treadway just down from Hendrick Medical Center.
Atmosphere: A much beleaguered location with several openings and closures in the last 10 years, the building is very much a diner style venue. 1 Star
Service: Service was great. Sat us right down and our waitress was very attentive to us the whole time we were there. Very polite and very quick service. 2 Stars
Food: We were given chips and salsa to start off with. The salsa was good with a nice kick to it. The chips were fine, (and I don't discount for their choice) just not my favorite style of chips. We also ordered the Queso with steak. Quite good. They serve some flour tortillas with it as well which were also good and seemed fresh. My wife ordered the Quesabirria (a take on Birria tacos but in quesadilla form) and it was massive! Huge portion. Definitely enough to feed two people. They had good flavor and the Birria sauce was decent. I ordered the fajita chicken chimichangas. Classic Tex-Mex style chimis usually come with rice, beans, meat and cheese and then are fried golden brown and topped with queso or some form of red sauce. What I got was not a chimichanga, at least not what I have ever eaten, and it is one of my favorite dishes that I order at many places. I've had them stuffed with grilled onions and peppers (my fave) as well as the classic mix mentioned above and several things in between. What I received were two smallish "wet burritos." Each were stuffed with grilled fajita style chicken and .......... that's it. Nothing else. No cheese, no beans, no rice. Just grilled chicken in a tortilla. And then it was grilled (like on a Blackstone) instead of fried (this is easily noticeable from my pics.) and covered with queso (which was good). With that being said, the chicken was fantastic on flavor. I will not discount the taste. Very good, but man, I was sure wanting for more, and longing for that crisp golden fried tortilla. Lastly, the rice was good and my refried beans were cold (as in burr.) The wife's charro beans did not suffer the same fate and were very good and hot. 0.5 Stars
Overall: Let's just get this out of the way first. Nothing we had tasted bad. In fact it was all very good. The chips are a personal preference and the Birria sauce was just ok. The Birria meat was good. The chicken in the "chimi" was also very tasty. I will definitely come back to try something else. But I'll most certainly steer away from the chimichangas. I'd be remiss if I didn't come back and at least try the enchiladas and tacos. I rounded up to 4 stars but overall, it's a 3.5 star on this visit with the cold beans and disappointing chimi.
