Tried this restaurant out today. I've heard very good things but upon arriving I noticed the parking lot was very small and compact. There is a smaller parking lot across the street I don't know if it belongs to them but there is a bridge to help you cross. Although, on the way back it's very steep and if you have elderly parents it'll be hard for them to cross unless you want to walk in the road on Treadaway which is very busy. Upon entering I noticed this restaurant was very very small. I don't know if they have a second seating section but they sat my party right by the bathrooms. I ordered the enchilada and taco plate which I did not finish. It wasn't the best flavor on any of it. My fiance liked the ceviche. My children got the fajita plate that they didn't finish either which weren't that great. All in all the food just wasn't that great. Now the rice and chips and salsa were on point though!!!! They do have that down! I tried to order Dr. Pepper and they did not have it. The service was good and our waitress was really nice but me and my family won't be returning.

Edited review, as I am unable to post a second review of this restaurant. We decided to give them a second shot tonight and ended up leaving within 10 mins of our food being served. I ordered the burrito california with steak which came out cold. I had no idea if that food inside had been cooked this morning or yesterday. My sister in laws order was wrong, and when brought back it looks like the jalapeño were just picked out of the nachos. My husband's chimichanga was hot, because that has to be fried. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. Some people may get good service here, but not us. I don't know where all these 5 star reviews come from, maybe staff or friends. I'd eat here at your own risk. 1st review: We decided to try Blue Agave tonight. We have heard all these rave reviews about the food and service. We went in and placed a to-go order at the bar for the steak nachos and chroizo queso. They were busy, but not too busy. The restaurant feels crowded and the tables are close to each other. We waited 40 mins for our food. The girl that rang us up barely acknowledged us. Other servers did ask if we were waiting on a to-go order. I felt like they didn't really care about a to-go order customer. When our order came out the girl just said "here" and thrusted the bag in my hands. At home, we found our order was not hot, like it had been sitting in the back for awhile. We had to reheat everything. We will not be trying this place again. Not sure what the rave is about, maybe it's nice to eat there if you don't mind feeling crowded.

If your trying to decide where to eat in this area you can stop your search, this is definitely the place. Great food and excellent service, the food came out hot, fast, and full of flavor. I recommend both the Quesabirria and the Charro beans......if im ever back in this area I will 100% eat here again.

Google
The chips and salsa are worth the visit! The chips are made from corn tortillas that have a different texture than most fresh corn tortilla chips but they are still light and crispy and delicious. The salsa was also just perfect. Our waiter was fantastic! We also loved the guacamole. If you like it limey, you'll love theirs. Everything else was good except for the flour tortilla. I will pass on that when we go back which will be soon.

Google
This may be a small local business but they bring their A game when it comes to service and food quality. Had the quesabirria plate and it was so good. Portion was extra large. I'm not usually a fan of salsa but you could tell it was homemade, full of flavors and mild heat. I will definitely be back.

The Chef here takes pride in not only the quality of food but also food *presentation! It looks delicious and absolutely is awesome. The Chef himself checks on his customers and the entire staff are grateful you are there to dine with them. They want you to know that you are APPRECIATED. Don’t judge this proverbial book by the cover. Stop, go inside and enjoy. PS, the chips are handmade and the super crunchy texture is unlike any others in town. Oh, and the white queso is fresh, not watered down and the salsa fresh made. The price is right. Have been twice now and plan on being a regular. I like abuelos in Abilene HOWEVER, this little diamond is better and priced right. No kidding. Thank you Aunt Nancy for sending us to try the Blue Agave.

Google
Amazingly delicious food! The chips are very unique, I have never had chips like that before, but they're awesome! Their salsa is slightly spicy in a good way and the flavor is great! It is very fresh. Everything is very authentic. Worth every penny!

Yelp
Stopped in around 6pm on a Wednesday. The place was busy but I was able to get a seat at the bar right away. Love the chips and salsa at the table. Nice bit of heat in the salsa and the puffy chips had good cruch and flavor. The house margarita on the rocks was huge. It was tasty but a little on the sweet side for my tastes. They have other varieties to try though so perhaps one of them will be more to my palate. The fajitas were well seasoned and had nice charred bits on the meat and veggies. The vibe was friendly and service was good even though they were packed. As luck would have it, someone from work brought in tacos for lunch the next day. Also very good. Will definitely stop back the next chance I get.

Yelp
very good restaurant with lots of great employees The highlights are going to be their fajitas, enchiladas, and most importantly: their birria tacos

Yelp
We were waited on right away by a sweet waitress. I ordered chicken flautas and my husband had chicken anchiladas. They were hot and delicious. The place was busy, so it was a little noisy. We will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Service was super attentive. Chips were unique and light. Salsa fantastic and a little spicy. California burrito was great and crunchy taco VERY good. Chicken enchiladas with green sauce were excellent. Rice and beans very flavorful. Would like to try everything on the menu.

Yelp
In town for work and stumbled across this gem. The service was acceptable, but the food is worth returning for. We had the queso with steak, chicken quesadillas, and quesabirria. The steak queso was good, very cheesy, but the quesabirria was the star of the show. Tender, savory, perfectly crispy tortillas. Nice meal!

Yelp
Blue Agave is a Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant located on Treadway just down from Hendrick Medical Center. Atmosphere: A much beleaguered location with several openings and closures in the last 10 years, the building is very much a diner style venue. 1 Star Service: Service was great. Sat us right down and our waitress was very attentive to us the whole time we were there. Very polite and very quick service. 2 Stars Food: We were given chips and salsa to start off with. The salsa was good with a nice kick to it. The chips were fine, (and I don't discount for their choice) just not my favorite style of chips. We also ordered the Queso with steak. Quite good. They serve some flour tortillas with it as well which were also good and seemed fresh. My wife ordered the Quesabirria (a take on Birria tacos but in quesadilla form) and it was massive! Huge portion. Definitely enough to feed two people. They had good flavor and the Birria sauce was decent. I ordered the fajita chicken chimichangas. Classic Tex-Mex style chimis usually come with rice, beans, meat and cheese and then are fried golden brown and topped with queso or some form of red sauce. What I got was not a chimichanga, at least not what I have ever eaten, and it is one of my favorite dishes that I order at many places. I've had them stuffed with grilled onions and peppers (my fave) as well as the classic mix mentioned above and several things in between. What I received were two smallish "wet burritos." Each were stuffed with grilled fajita style chicken and .......... that's it. Nothing else. No cheese, no beans, no rice. Just grilled chicken in a tortilla. And then it was grilled (like on a Blackstone) instead of fried (this is easily noticeable from my pics.) and covered with queso (which was good). With that being said, the chicken was fantastic on flavor. I will not discount the taste. Very good, but man, I was sure wanting for more, and longing for that crisp golden fried tortilla. Lastly, the rice was good and my refried beans were cold (as in burr.) The wife's charro beans did not suffer the same fate and were very good and hot. 0.5 Stars Overall: Let's just get this out of the way first. Nothing we had tasted bad. In fact it was all very good. The chips are a personal preference and the Birria sauce was just ok. The Birria meat was good. The chicken in the "chimi" was also very tasty. I will definitely come back to try something else. But I'll most certainly steer away from the chimichangas. I'd be remiss if I didn't come back and at least try the enchiladas and tacos. I rounded up to 4 stars but overall, it's a 3.5 star on this visit with the cold beans and disappointing chimi.

Yelp
Starters- chips and salsa were phenomenal, chips definitely made in house and the sales was really good. The queso with steak was really really good and was served with some tortillas that were amazing aswell Meals- 10/10 amazing awesome great, no other way to put it

Yelp
Awesome local Mexican food place. Clean, looks like it's been recently updated inside and out. Restaurant and bar. Service was friendly and efficient. Salsa is one of my favorites. Not bland like a lot of places. Our whole party liked our food. I had the avocado salad. I ordered it with chicken but they sent steak instead. It was delicious. There were even pieces of bacon on it. The meat is on top of shredded lettuce and finely chopped tomatoes not the huge chunks of lettuce and tomatoes you often get with a salad. I prefer this. Plus they are generous with the avocados and limes. We definitely moved this place to being one of our local favorites.

Yelp
Really good food!!!! One of Abilenes best in my opinion. Chips and Salsa is spot on. Queso is great! Personally, my favorite plate is the Pollo Plancha! Great service! And to top it off, they have my favorite beverages, Coca Cola Zero! I just wish they carried more glass bottle Fanta flavors or Barrilitos, giving more options for my kids. You won't go wrong choosing this place to eat.

Yelp
The food and people here are always great! Very generous portions that we usually order our own but end up taking half home for later! The steak or chicken chimichangas are perfectly crispy and amazing and the sweet tea is very good too! If you're less hungry the quesabirria are a great choice!

Nickolas W.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican food Service was good and great environment just a little crowded

Yelp
Our stop for dinner here on our roadtrip did not disappoint! Super kind staff, a menu with usual Tex Mex faves but I was so pleased they had a keto / low carb friendly option with the avocado salad-- generous portions and the food came out fast! After sparing carbs at dinner, I chomped on a sopapilla for dessert- it was like a beignet-- I brought my fam including a 10yo and 3yo we all loved this place!

Yelp
Amazing! Hands down the best Mexican i have ever eaten, best chips and salsa , everybody thing we got was so great!

Walt S.

Yelp
Devided to try it after seeing the reviews and a recommendation. Definitely wasn't disappointed. I had the chilli relleno, which was different from what im used to, but was really good. Beans and and rice had alot of flavor. Wife had a chicken quesadilla they she enjoyed. Chips and salsa were different and had a little heat and alot of flavor. Food came out quick and service was really good. If you want some good Mexican food, give it a shot.

Yelp
My husband and I decided on dinner at Blue Agave, we both wanted Mexican food. We were set in the back room, temperature was perfect and had some music on the tv. my husband had the flautas plate and I decided on Birria plate (4 tacos). Our waitress, Reagan, was very studious! She had our drink order immediately after being seated, brought chips and salsa to the table, took our orders and had our food on the table within minutes. Both of our meals were so good, and piping hot. The salsa was so good, had good flavor and a bit chunky. No complaints here, we both left full and I carried my left overs out for tomorrow. Thank you Reagan for a very pleasant dining experience:) No pictures tonight.... I forgot!

Nancy G.

Yelp
The place was a very down home Mexican restaurant. Great service. Chips and salsa was fantastic. The food came very fast and was the best Mexican food I've had in west Texas . I will call this place our New Mexican home for the best in Abilene.
google avatar

Brad C.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and the food is amazing! Probably the best Mexican food I've had since moving back to TX. Wouldn't be an accurate review without mentioning the margaritas, which were perfect. I will definitely be returning.
google avatar

Yelp
Blue Agave is some of the best Mexican food in Abilene. Everything is always on point. Best chips and hot sauce in Abilene. They have some of the best Mexican seafood dishes around. The Michalada's are cold, dressed, and refreshing. Service is quick and they check on you regularly. The food is hot and fresh with generous portions. It's always packed at lunch so go early to snag a table or after 1:15 to miss the crowds.

Ricky P.

Yelp
Beef fajitas were tough. I cannot tell you much about the flavor because I spent time trying to pull them apart. Service was average. Ambience was small and loud - not so much in a negative way - you just need to be prepared for that atmosphere
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Great food and amazing fast service. Drinks were on point. Our server was polite and friendly. Salsa was a little mild for our tastes but still good. The entrees our group chose were all hits. The building doesn't showcase the amazing food going on inside. We will definitely return when in the area.

Yelp
Yikes!! I really want to eat here but the heath code violations. I'm not sure I can get past that. 3 stars just so the review shows up.
google avatar

K L.

Yelp
Their queso is hands down the best! It can get a little crowded inside so I usually just get my food to go.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Are here at the recommendation of a friend and it did not disappoint! We had the chile relleno and the quesabirria, and will prob be getting them the next time. The staff were attentive and friendly folks and even tho the place was busy, we did not have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for our food which was awesome. It's a small place but have decent seating and not overcrowded. We've been back here twice after the initial visit already so I would def recommend!

Yelp
Service and Ambience I strongly dislike writing "bad" reviews. However, Blue Agave on Treadway went the extra mile on bad service and food quality. One other customer and my party of three were at the restaurant at 10:05 a.m. when Blue Agave opened their doors. There were at least six workers at the bar, having their breakfast or lunch. It took 10 minutes for someone came to our table for our drinks. The traditional, regional, northern Mexican music was loud and gave the impression that more than a restaurant, this place was a Cantina. Food Avoid the chips and salsa; they will make you frown, and unnecessary wrinkles will appear on your face. We ordered Carne Asada and a Chile relleno with cheese. The beef was chewy and flavorless (It felt like I was eating a rubber band). I requested my beans and rice on the side (separate from the meat), but my request was ignored. The Chile Relleno was covered with a tasteless- depressing tomato sauce that yelled to us: "Send me back to my can!". I will try this place again and see if it was only a bad day, but I am not excited about Blue Agave.

Yelp
I can't even begin to explain how much this place has surpassed my expectations. It's been over 2 years of trying to find places that feel like my home place. I can truly say this is one of the places I will be coming back for. The flavors were amazing. The service was extremely fast and the food came out so quick. The environment is very welcoming and the music is not too loud either but I love it so no complaints. 10/10
google avatar

Dorathy M.

Yelp
Service is ok but food is so flavorful! It's not a fancy place but great for lunch with friends! We love the beef fajitas, carne assada and shrimp tacos.
google avatar

Drew B.

Yelp
Street tacos were super tasty. Friendly and fast service!! I went during early afternoon and was not super crowded and was able to enjoy my food without having to listen to multiple conversations from other folks. Visiting from Hawaii so I might have to come back before I leave.

Josh C.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times before and never had the experience I had today. the food was AMAZING, as usual! However, there was a large woman who I had never seen before as our waitress and as soon as I told her I wanted a burrito, she just takes my menu from my hands and walks away as I was getting ready to order queso as an appetizer. I have never had this happen before and it made me so angry that I couldn't even finish my meal because all I was thinking about was how ignorant and rude the waitress was for doing that. THEN she brings me a warm beer with a bunch of salt on the rim of the glass, when I wanted a COLD beer without a half pound of salt on the glass. The whole experience was just weird and unexpected for this place and I honestly don't know if I'll be back after today.
google avatar

Ed C.

Yelp
Oh my God!! Love this place!! Love the Nuevo Mexico cuisine. If you decide to have a margarita, do not attempt to drive! The salsa is delicious good flavor with the heat delayed. The chips are delicious. I had the rellenos and enchiladas. Absolutely delicious. Great atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable considering the portions. The staff is friendly and efficient. Definitely going eat there again.

Tim B.

Yelp
Best TexMex I've had in months. I was beginning to think that traditional TexMex was dead in Texas. This is a traditional family run TexMex restaurant. No frills; just great food served quickly.
google avatar

Trey L.

Yelp
This is a true hidden gem! Service is amazing and food is consistently the best Mexican food in Abilene. The habanero rice is a must order if you like it a little spicy. The drinks from the bar are consistent and on point! Rocky the owner is amazing and making sure you have a great time! Would highly recommend!
google avatar

Zoe M.

Yelp
Tried the newest addition to Abilene's restaurants The salsa was some of the best I've ever had and the chips were freshly made. Great portion sizes for the prices. Queso was thick and cheesy! Rice was cooked perfectly! Definitely a place I'll come back to. Attentive and friendly service.

Mo M.

Yelp
The queso flamenco with steak is a meal in it self and delicious to share with corn and flour tortillas. The habanero rice is superb and the beans taste homemade.
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
Normally I like Mexican food In generally but this place I will put up against any one I have eaten at in the last year.

Yelp
Loved the food and the drink drinks. The ambience was lacking, but honestly, the food made up for it.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to give this restaurant a try after hearing some great reviews from friends. Showed up a a little after 1:15, our waitress came up to the table almost immediately with chips and salsa and to get our drink order. Looked over the menu which has a lot of options. Placed our order and it came out 10-15 mins later. My husband got the California burrito with steak and I got the special of the day(2 enchiladas and a taco). His burrito was so big he had enough leftover for dinner. Food was absolutely amazing. In and out in under an hour. Staff was very friendly. We will definitely return

Glenda W.

Yelp
Excellent food!! Very flavorful and the service was great. This is a little gem you want to try!

Yelp
Friendly staff. The queso and the (#15) quessabirria were delicious. Highly recommend for anyone looking for good Mexican in Abilene.

Nick M.

Yelp
With Blue Agave plugged into the gps two hours out, we were quite excited for some quick and tasty Mexican cuisine... We stepped in the restaurant with 50 minutes until close to get turned around after being asked to wait and she would be right back to help us. The parking lot was full but there were plenty of tables open. We just wanted a quick bite, now we will never be back. Rude service. Thumbs down.
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
Easily my new favorite Mexican food restaurant! Loved every bit of it. My husband tried the quesabirria and I tried the chicken chimichangas. Serving size of one dish is easily enough for two, so we had plenty of leftovers to bring home for later. The chips and salsa were fresh and flavorful. I even enjoyed the beans and rice (which I usually don't touch). I can't wait to go back again!

Yelp
Well second time was not a charm. Ordered sour cream enchiladas and avocado salad. Enchiladas came to the table, but not the avocado salad. No one ever came to check, as I would've asked about the salad and also told them they forgot the habanero rice. When I was finished eating the server finally came and asked if I needed anything and I said please cancel the salad, I'm done eating, and at that moment it was was delivered. I said I'd like to cancel that please because I'm finished eating. The server got extremely upset. I thought she was gonna throw the salad. She got another person and they came over and got upset with me also. I explained that I was done eating and apologized, but I would think that she would bring the order out at the same time, as I really did want to eat some of the salad. The server never came back and sent someone else to bring me the check. I tried to explain the confusion to them and they just said OK. Another person came over to ask what happened and I told them the same thing and even said if two people were sitting at the table together and both ordered a plate, you would not bring one plate 25 minutes after the other plate that would just be, poor procedure. Also, I suggested if a runner brings out the food, the server should come check on the table earlier to see if everything came out correctly. I also suggested that if a customer orders asalad, and a main dish, a good tip for the server would be to ask if they would like that salad to come out first and then hold the main dish for a couple of minutes. That would've solved all this, but to make the customer feel bad and treat them hostile is not the solution for an error. Interestingly of all the people that came to the table, it was 4, the manager was the only one who did not come. I promise I'm a nice guy.

Yelp
The kindest staff around. Rocky and Rosa turned a rough week into a perfect evening. Food is 5 Star! Drinks are top notch. The perfect family owned Mexican food restaurant

Yelp
We had heard and read several comments about Blue Agave so after a movie we went so find out. The room was full except one table so no wait. Started with chips and salsa which was ok, not really hot, but tasty and then we ordered the queso with steak. This was yummy. Our waitress was very informative, friendly and funny. Ordered chili rellano with a chicken enchilada, shrimp tacos and birria tacos. Plenty of food and charro beans were great! One of us ordered the habanero rice but couldn't really tell any difference than regular rice. We asked for tres leches, but they had run out. Service was excellent, food was hot and brought out timely. Paying with cash receives a slight discount. We enjoyed, so will return!

Yelp
The last business in this building was BBQ. Didn't last very long. Boom! Another Mexican restaurant has blessed Abilene with its presence. Blue Agave has been open a month so it's time to try them. Friday night so it's packed! Got the last open table, and even that has a story. Chips and hit sauce arrived quickly. Delicious! Fresh crisp chips and a slightly spicy hot sauce that had a hint of cilantro. Yum! My spicy grilled shrimp was covered in a medium hot red sauce. Loved it! Perfect for me. Glenda's birria tacos weren't true birria tacos, but she said they were delicious. She enjoyed the Pina colada even though it wasn't frozen. I took a sip and it was quite tasty. The meal was a little pricey at $60, but we really enjoyed it. Now, the table story. We had gotten the last table in the restaurant, and while we ate the power went out 3 times. Our table was under the emergency lights, so we were the only table with lights. Lucky! Y'all come try Blue Agave, you'll like it!
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
This was our third visit to Blue Agave and my second review. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the service was exemplary. We will be back in about a month. I plan on trying the birria tacos. If I'd seen them on the menu I would have tried them today. Looking forward to our next visit.

Yelp
Service was quick and the food was even better! If you're in the Abilene TX area make sure you stop for some AMAZING food.

Yelp
Brian and I went here again and the crowd wasn't anywhere near noisy. This time we were seated in the main dining room area and it was definitely a much better experience. The food was terrific! I had the Chorizo Pollo and Brian, my husband, had the enchiladas. Both of our meals were delicious and we enjoyed ourselves again. Our waitress was sweet and helpful and very attentive. Will definitely continue going there. The salsa and chips were great as well. The salsa reminds me of the salsa a good friend's wife used to make. The time of day that we went was the best. Nice crowd but not noisy. We went around 11:45.
