The Spring 2018 Restaurant Opening Guide: North Shore | Eater Boston

"A neighborhood coffee shop that replaced the previous café while continuing to serve the same roaster’s beans alongside baked goods, sandwiches, smoothies, and other light café offerings in a small downtown location." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Had a sandwich from Blue Canoe today, and I was honestly a bit underwhelmed. I order the Abbot Hall which comes with cranberry mayo and turkey. I was hoping it was in-house roasted and sliced turkey (it did not appear to be), and the cranberry mayo didn’t really taste of much. I would have loved to have tasted the tartness of cranberry. It was a fine sandwich but nothing extraordinary. I will be back to try coffee and a breakfast Sammy in the future.

Was staying in Marblehead for a few days and came here several times during our stay. The coffee was good, lots of food options for breakfast or lunch, and nice atmosphere! Also appreciated them letting us hang out in here for a bit with our suitcases while we were killing some time for an evening flight.

My two favorite foods sound boring to some, but I can't help it -- I'm a savory food kind of person. I love nachos and I love BLTs, and it's amazing how many places have managed to not do these two things well. I have never been able to find a place that can make a good BLT, until now! I needed a quick lunch today and went here on a whim because it was close by. I saw they were closing soon, but there were people inside so I headed in. Sometimes small, local coffee shops can feel drafty or unkempt or just lifeless. As soon as I walked in, I felt like I'd want to sit there for hours. The temperature was just right, and the ambiance felt friendly and warm. I acknowledged that they were closing soon and asked if I could still order a sandwich. They replied in a way that felt welcoming, and not like I was imposing on them (which some places, 15 minutes prior to closing, would have). I ordered the BLT and used the restroom while I waited. Even the restroom was pleasant! I sat in one of the two window bays on a comfortable stool (again, perfect! sometimes they're way too high for a 4'10" to get up on, or off), with a complimentary cup of water (I love when cafes have serve yourself water). One of the servers brought my sandwich over and even on first glance I could tell it was going to be good. No wilted lettuce, no weird bread, perfect amount of mayo and bacon. It was the best BLT I've had at a restaurant, even better than I make at home. So, 5 stars for great ambiance, friendly, unrushed service, and a great BLT! I have no doubt that their other food is just as good.

Google
Super cute little cafe. There are many items on the menu. The ornamented theme of this place creates such a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Great service, great food!

Google
Blue Canoe is a great spot to check out, I would highly recommend it to anyone. I've gone here a number of times and it's always a great experience. They make great coffee and always have homemade pastries and other breakfast food.

Google
Cute little cafe, nice atmosphere. Got a blueberry muffin, which was very good, and a large, extremely hot Earl grey tea. Sat for a couple hours with a friend and chatted and didn't feel rushed out at all.

One of our homes away from home while visiting Marblehead for the month of July. We enjoyed their iced coffees, sandwiches, pastries, and service with a smile!

Google
I'm ashamed that I've lived in marblehead a few years now and never tried this place. I highly recommend a simple coffee or latte so you can taste how simply delicious it is. It's also kid friendly (etch-a-sketches a great way to keep them sitting) and my son found a favorite gluten free option in the breakfast sandwich wrap.

Yelp
This is a very nice local café. I've been there twice. First time I had a lemon, poppy muffin and coffee. It was fabulous and the other day I had a bacon egg and cheese on a well done English muffin. It was also very very good. The coffee was excellent. The gal behind the counter was super friendly and they let me bring my ESA dog in. Of course I did show her identification to ensure they were OK with it. I hope to go back soon soon and have lunch. Well done Blue Canoe.

Yelp
Steak sammich for the win! Really liked the food here. Spicy pickle chips, a coke and the steak sammich was great. Service was also very nice and brought our food out to us. Very small, intimate place only open for brunch hours next door to the Marblehead little theatre. Also tried the pumpkin spice latte. Another win. Place is gonna be on my AM radar each day I'm here in town.

Yelp
Blue Canoe is a literal gem in Marblehead. You know if a cafe has a cute dog as their logo, I'm in. The inside is immediately inviting, with royal blue and wood decor and an inherent nautical undertone. There's plenty of seating and you're not sitting on top of anyone. This charming cafe has a great coffee and tea menu, salads, sandwiches and a fridge with grab-and-go snacks and beverages. When I visited, it was under brand new ownership and the managers were very excited to chat, tell me about the town and their vision for the new version of Blue Canoe. I had a delicious egg and bacon breakfast sandwich and chai tea latte. I liked it so much here I ended up coming more than once, which is a bit unusual for me while traveling! I really appreciated the welcoming atmosphere, their care for their town, and great coffee. Cheers to Blue Canoe!

Norie S.

Yelp
Great coffee and teas! Pastry's were delicious and prices were good. Service was friendly and personable.

Lance H.

Yelp
The food ok. We got the grilled cheese and the chicken orzo soup. I would rate the grilled cheese a 3/5 and the orzo soup a 3.5/5. The grilled cheese definitely needed more flavor to be eaten by itself, especially since there is no tomato soup option. The orzo soup was also very simple. It had decent flavor but wasn't anything special. The bonfire latte was great 4.5/5. Overall the people were very friendly. The inside of the cafe is small but decorated nice.

Yelp
Awesome pressed sandwiches and a nice cafe atmosphere for working. Staff is very friendly and plenty of gluten free options.
google avatar

Alan D.

Yelp
What a great place to grab a quick breakfast and morning beverage! The service was extremely friendly and inviting. The interior vibe was traditional to a costal/seaside town. Having a take one/leave one book section in the Cafe was creative!
google avatar

Emma J.

Yelp
Adorable place with lovely branding. I tried a bagel sandwich and a vanilla cold brew. The bagel sandwich was pressed which I especially loved. The cold brew was delicious as well. No complaints here! Bonus points for having unique specials

Yelp
Just discovered this gem in Marblehead and I was pleasantly surprised once I got inside. Nice selections for breakfast sandwiches and sweet bites. Coffee is Atomic Coffee and comfortable seating. I felt a sense of community from this space and I like it!
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
Super nice staff with excellent coffee and breakfast sandwiches!! Also allows for dogs, making it extra convenient.

Laura S.

Yelp
First time in Blue Canoe! The owner and staff were all polite and friendly! The coffee is fabulous, the vibe is great and the food is tasty, plus I've got a gluten allergy and they have plenty of gluten free options! I can't wait for my next trip to Marblehead for the Blue Canoe coffee!
google avatar

Colleen C.

Yelp
Came here twice and both times there were errors with our orders. I'm not one to fuss so we just dealt with it but the coffee was also not great either. Wish the breakfast sandwiches had some sort of sauce because aside from the errors they were pretty dry.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, good coffee, and quiet enough for meetings, this local spot is better for boomers.

Yelp
This is not the place to come for a freshly cooked breakfast. The eggs in my breakfast burrito had the taste and consistency of a powdered egg mix. The menu listed it as a two egg burrito, so maybe they were scrambled and cooked in a microwave? Either way- the eggs were tasteless and had a pretty terrible texture. My friend's croissant sandwich had the same pale sheet layer of egg, and said the bacon on her sandwich tasted microwaved as well. I think Blue Canoe has a lot of great things going for it, including friendly service, nice decor, and an extensive menu. The wrap and sandwich we had today also had great sides and spreads. However... you can get better eggs at pretty much any breakfast place on the north shore. Other aspects: Coffee- my friend had a great atomic cold brew, but my almond milk latte had burnt espresso, over-steamed milk, and was pretty undrinkable without adding a lot of sugar. Music- ukulele covers, including bohemian rhapsody. Pastries- the lemon blueberry scone I had did not taste fresh, had a bad texture, and was too sweet. Didn't eat more than a few bites.

Yelp
I really like some of the shakes (cold brew shake is my go to) and breakfast sandwiches like the Market - the aioli they put on some of these is really delicious! That being said, the eggs are always that fast food hard pre-cooked puck style. It would be awesome if they offered a fresh scramble or over easy (etc) option. I understand this would require someone to man a frying pan most of they day and could be a stretch ask. Also I would say the prices are relatively fair and when we aren't in a pandemic the cafe is a nice atmosphere for working or catching up with a friend.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Friendly, delicious fresh muffins and many options to choose from! Good outdoor space provided.
google avatar

Bill D.

Yelp
Top notch quality and selections of sandwiches and soup. Delicious coffees and pastries to enjoy with your breakfast sandwiches. Top it off with a smooth smoothie! Spotless and vibrant interior to chillax with a friend. The prices are unbelievably fair and an outstanding value for the quality and quantity. I somehow feel like I'm in Italy or Greece when visiting this special place. Enjoy!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
If you're in Marblehead and have a hankering for a breakfast sandwich, get The Market. Bacon, eggs, avo, smooshed to perfection on a crispy croissant... but what makes it stick is the sundried tomato mayo. So tasty. Low key, off-the-beaten-path, coffees/smoothies, woman-owned, and unpretentious goodness!

Tyler H.

Yelp
The food is delicious and at great prices. The service is amazing and the staff was friendly and helpful. The ambiance is light and fun, very clean and crisp feel inside.

Yelp
Blue Canoe might be the best indie cafe in the Boston area. Their menu is extensive, their specials are awesome, and and the people who work there are always super friendly. Plus, they have the coolest, most engaging social media presence- I always enjoy their posts and stories. You can tell they put a lot of love and care into what they create and what they offer. I also love that they have some good vegetarian and vegan options. I sadly moved away from Marblehead a few months after they opened, but I still drive up there when I can because it's just that good!
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
I'm here on a regular basis. Usually enjoy the cold brew shake - banana, PB and chocolate whey proteins, (for me) oatmilk and their Atomic Cold Brew. It's delicious and holds me over until lunch. Their fruit salads and chicken salads are delicious, too. I can't eat the sandwiches because of a gluten intolerance, but everything they do here is fresh, homemade and served by a very knowledgeable and friendly staff! Outdoor seating available too!

Yelp
My husband, son and I had a really hard time finding a breakfast place in this little town. We stumbled across this gem of a cafe and had a delightful experience. They make their quiche from scratch and you can tell. There was a veggie and meat option. Delicious! My son ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich which he said was very good. The freshly-roasted coffee was great (according to my husband) and they had a great tea selection for me. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was clean and very cute inside. And who wouldn't love that logo! I highly recommend this place if you want a cozy place to have a great breakfast.

Yelp
Really excited this place opened. Lots of great about it. Although we will respectfully boycott given the use of plastic used. We as a need to be more mindful in supporting companies that "get it". If you need more education on this subject please do a simple Google search. We will continue to frequent Haley's & Shubie's, and continue there once Haley's migrates over to The Mugford. Please step it up because we would love to come back. Your tuna melt was so yummy! REDUCE * reuse * recycle.

amy f.

Yelp
Consistently disappointing experience.. Product: Food is underwhelming (microwave, crappy pastries), feels mass produced. The coffee stinks--iced coffee tastes like plastic (they have rows and rows of pitchers of flavors..that kind of place) and hot coffee is weak and tastes burned. They insist on adding the milk and sugar for you which DRIVES ME NUTS! I don't need more ways for you to ruin my coffee. Atmosphere: generic. It's not cozy, it's not comfortable. Not what i look for in a coffee shop. Service: usually friendly
google avatar

T. U.

Yelp
Very good coffee and a friendly staff. They won't cook eggs to order; they are pre-mixed in the morning and served, McDonald's style, in round slabs -- so, meh! The quiche is good. The lighting is a bit clinical and the seats just okay for comfort. They refuse to put salt and pepper shakers on the tables, so you must ask each time for small paper containers. This is a place that could be made considerably better with greater flexibility regarding cooking to order.

Dean N.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, great selection of pastries and bagels (in the am) and the owner could not be more welcoming. They have a good selection of gluten free choices. Have not had lunch there, but plan to. The place to go in Marblehead.
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
Cute canoe, but very disappointing food. It's like they purchased pastries in bulk from Cisco and unwrapped the plastic...and speaking of plastic, why no thought given to sustainability?! There are no ceramic mugs for staying customers or compostable products of any kind. And finally, I prefer to pour my own milk. Step it up, Blue Canoe, it's 2018.
google avatar

Lawrence R.

Yelp
So glad this Cafe has opened. Fresh food and friendly people, everything was delicious- this place is going to be a huge hit in Marblehead!!!

Jg W.

Yelp
What an amazing addition to Marblehead, which is full of little cafes, this one stands out. The owner and her staff are all so friendly and local, they have a strong culture here. The smoothies, food and coffee is all well prepared and tastes great. But for me, its the culture, you always feel welcome here and youll always leave with a smile

Dale M.

Yelp
I had a great panini at Blue Canoe but the smoothie was a disappointment. It was supposed to be made of strawberries, coconut milk and bananas. They did not have strawberries so they substituted it with raspberries and substituted the coconut milk with almond milk. I could not taste the bananas at all. The smoothie tasted like a barnyard with a hint of raspberry. I will keep away from their smoothies but the panini was great!

Yelp
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the place!!!!! One of my favorites in town! My go to order is the Reporter (BLT) and it's DELICIOUS! Such a cute and cozy environment, very clean and decorated, food is AMAZING, I personally love how they name each food item a place or thing in Marblehead, such a cute touch! In all I rate this place a 10/10 would definitely recommend (;
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Blue Canoe has a great vibe, it's so warm. I'm currently eating a frittata and thought why not write now? They still have the Atomic Roasters coffee (thank you!), and the menu is fantastic. There's a grab and go which is helpful, and there's plenty of seating. I highly recommend going here, Stephanie and her staff are so welcoming. Congrats on opening a new gem! Can't wait to try more sandwiches. :-)
google avatar

Harrison B.

Yelp
i have now been here 3 times and each time was a very pleasant experience. the staff (different all 3 times) were consistent and very friendly. their breakfast is great for grab and go and their lunch sandwiches are awesome as well. As for coffee, i consider myself a bit of a coffee snob. They use Atomic Roasters and actually operate out of where the Atomic Cafe used to be. If you have never had Atomic Roasters coffee it is sold in a black bag now in most local super markets but they do also sell it here. The Rocketeer blend is fantastic. This coffee is really just great stuff, and they have it in all sorts of variety's. I typically just get a black cold brew and am always happy. Nicely done Blue Canoe!

Monty M.

Yelp
Populated with charming and affable staff, the Blue Canoe Cafe delivered a speedy service. The Cold Brew Shake was very good, perhaps a little too much banana for my liking. The Market egg sandwiches promised slightly more than I received but considering they were only $5.95 were very good value. If only I wasn't trying to cut out carbs I might have allowed myself to enjoy it! The Blue Canoe Cafe is worthy of a second visit.

Karen S.

Yelp
Watch your Bill I have been charged three different prices for the exact same sandwich three different times a dollar difference not acceptable. When I brought this up to the owner her customer service was unacceptable not even an apology. A little I'm sorry would have gone a long way and kept me as a customer. Happy Marblehead offers multiple restaurants with great customer service and a smile.
google avatar

Bert R.

Yelp
Amazing food, service and atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant. It's hard to find a place that cares about every facet of your dining experience. This place certainly does

John H.

Yelp
Like the business that lived in this lovely spot before it, the Blue Canoe may be destined to crash for the same reason in spite of the nice atmosphere good food and friendly service...there is never a place to sit because the tables are filled with chatty folks who linger on and on. Eventually the place gets the reputation, as did the Atomic Cafe that it is not worth the trip. The result is workers standing around with nothing to do, but tables filled with hangers-on. Suggestion: a little card on a pedestal at each table politely reminding folks that this is a small business and once you are done please leave the table open for the next guest. As impolite as it may sound, restaurants make money on turnover.

Janine A.

Yelp
Maybe this is good for coffee but don't bother with the breakfast sandwiches. The croissant was nice and flaky, but the egg was some weird microwaved powdered egg product with a spongy consistency. It had Swiss cheese and a thin slice of deli ham. Nothing exciting at all.
google avatar

S H.

Yelp
Love the fun renovation and menu. The new banquet style seating can accommodate more ppl than Atomic's booths so it has a livelier vibe. We tried the ciabatta egg sandwich and berry yogurt bowl and both were great! Nice addition to breakfast and lunch offerings in Marblehead.
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
Nice spot - good to see the new owners maintain a similar but nicely improved format from their predecessor (Atomic). They are fast and extremely nice - service with a smile. Only nit - but super important: The lids on your to-go coffee cups could be WAY better. The tear and fold back tab doesn't stay put and it's drippy/spilly to drink from - especially in a car! Go for the nicer lids with the sip spout. Cinnamon roll was amazing. Congrats on opening an awesome biz - looking forward to coming back.

Christina M.

Yelp
Love it here! Great sandwiches and smoothies! Great prices! Super friendly staff that always is welcoming !!! Highly recommend!

Julie L.

Yelp
Great coffee! No flavor shots in the iced coffee, it's fresh brewed. Staff knew our name after just a few visits. Great cinnamon streusel muffin and love the homemade veggie cream cheese. They use coffee cards so after 10 you get a free coffee. They sell glass straws and use real cups if you stay for coffee. Blue Canoe is our favorite way to start our weekend!

Sam S.

Yelp
The bitch with the glasses was mad rude to me when I simply asked her what she recommended off the menu for iced coffee. I don't think this is how blue canoe should treat young paying costumers i am really disappointed my coffee tasted like gross watered down coffee to say the least

Ashish S.

Yelp
Excellent choice in Marblehead to grab breakfast lunch a snack or just coffee. Great clean food, no surprises, good quality ingredients and the staff are the best.

Ted G.

Yelp
Their sandwiches were very good. Service was excellent. I don't drink coffee but they had all types of coffee and tea. It is a great new place and everyone in Marblehead and beyond should try it.

Debbie M.

Yelp
The Blue canoe cafe is great! The bagels and muffins are delicious and same as the drinks. The owner Stephanie is so nice! You should definitely eat there and it's never too busy and never runs out of food.

Tricia P.

Yelp
I want to love this cafe and I feel on the outs since every review I read is rave. It looks great, and smells great when you walk in. The chicken salad sandwich is quite good. The baked goods look excellent, though I haven't tried. I have two issues though. First, the breakfast sandwich. They don't cook up a fresh egg (like at Haley's, Shubies and Newman's). It's a homogeneous yellow egg patty like at Dunkin Donuts. It does cost less than those "real" sandwiches so maybe that's on purpose. Just know what you're getting. Second, the coffee. You have to tell them how you want it ("milk and sugar") because they don't have a station out front for customers. There is a reason NO other coffee place does this - nobody ever makes your coffee like you do. I find it irritating to have to say "a splash of cream" and then wonder if their idea of a splash is the same as mine. Please, can I just do it myself?
